Schumann's Op. 25: Finding the Narrative Within

Gaarder, Renee Danielle 07 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Many of the song cycles written by Schumann have been studied over the years and it is well known that his most prolific time of song production was the year 1840. Myrthen, Op. 25, has been studied less than some of his other cycles because it calls into question the modern view of the song cycle and for this reason is difficult to classify. What is most difficult about the classification of Op. 25 is that there is no immediately apparent narrative. In addition, the musical relationships which exist are usually considered to be of little consequence. What scholars are left with is a group of songs that in Schumann's mind constituted a song cycle but to the modern eye seems to be anything but. The most prevalent view concerning the organization of Op. 25 is that it is a collection of songs. Given his view of Lieder and his compositional process, in addition to the fact that it was presented to Clara as a wedding gift, I believe that Schumann had a specific organization in mind for this work. In this thesis I argue that due to the way in which Schumann conceived of and composed song cycles, the musical relationships are not what bind Op. 25 together although these relationships do exist. Instead, the organization hinges mainly on the text which represents a narrative of the relationship between Robert and Clara, which differs from the modern view of what classifies a group of songs as a cycle.

'Defragmenting the portrait': Catalina Clara Ramírez De Guzman, extremadura's No Conocida Señora of the golden age. A critical multidisciplinary reappraisal of the work of Catalina Clara Ramírez de Guzmán (Llerena, 1618-c.1684)

McLaughlin, Karl P. January 2010 (has links)
Modern critical works on the seventeenth-century Extremaduran author Catalina Clara Ramírez de Guzmán are sparse, with the exception of recent interest manifested by a small group of feminist scholars in the United States. Apart from intermittent mentions of her poetry, she is virtually unknown among British Hispanists. This thesis seeks to fill many existing gaps in knowledge on her by providing a broader critical assessment of her surviving poetry than has been available thus far, particularly by situating it and its author within their historical, literary and social contexts and drawing thematic and stylistic analogies with works by other authors, male and female. Part I will concentrate primarily on historical aspects. It will establish the reputation enjoyed by the poet in her day and review references to her work in modern critical literature. It will also provide a detailed reconstruction of the poet¿s family antecedents and discuss the evidence of a literary community in her home city during the period in which she was active as a writer. Part II will focus on the poetry itself, specifically a consideration of the thematic content of a broad representative selection of Ramírez de Guzmán¿s verses, which were not published until nearly two centuries after her death, and an examination of her interaction with the genres of occasional verse, verse portraiture and burlesque and satirical poetry, all of which will be discussed against the background of their respective traditions.

Le discours romanesque de Clara Mundt alias Luise Mühlbach (1814-1873) face à l’histoire : représentation de l’ère napoléonienne, historiographie popularisée et modernité scientifique en Allemagne autour de 1850 / Clara Mundt’s (1814-1873) literary discourse on history : representation of the Napoleonic era, popularized historiography and scientific modernity in Germany about 1850

Braun, Stefanie 21 September 2018 (has links)
The thesis deals with popular historiography and scientific modernity in Germany between 1850 and 1862 – namely after the revolution of 1848 and before Otto von Bismarck became Minister President of Prussia – through the study of three historical novels, Königin Hortense (1856), Napoleon in Deutschland (1858/1859) and Kaiserin Josephine (1861) by Theodor Mundt’s wife Clara Mundt (1814-1873) alias Luise Mühlbach. She was one of the most successful historical novelist of her time, and belongs to the first generation of professional female writers. The main focus of this study is on the literary discourse on the history of relationships between France and Germany. The purpose is to demonstrate how the transmission and the popularization of historical knowledge could be used for education to female patriotism and women citizenship. The study of the use of testimonies and documentary sources borrowed from recent historians shows how L. Mühlbach proceeded to appropriate historical material and to upgrade female figures of the past. Besides the dissertation deals with the analysis of the several historical, political, social and literary mechanisms which explain the success of Clara Mundt’s historical novels between 1850 and 1860. The study puts emphasis on the continuities between L. Mühlbach’s social novels of the Vormärz and the historical novels, like the social and religious issues and the topic of women’s emancipation, in order to question the idea of a split in her work before and after 1848.

Jara Astudillo, Nadia Paz, Vigneaux Ramírez, Cristián Andrés January 2017 (has links)

Lithics and Mobility at Land Hill and Hidden Hills: A Study of the Stone Tools and Debitage at Sites in the Santa Clara River Basin and on the Shivwits Plateau

Mangum, Megan Ellice 01 August 2018 (has links)
The Land Hill and Hidden Hills study areas were the site of the 2006 and 2007 Brigham Young University's archaeological field schools. The two study areas are located in contrasting environments; the Land Hill area is located along the Santa Clara River in southwestern Utah, and the Hidden Hills area was is located on the Shivwits Plateau in northwestern Arizona. The Land Hill study area is located within a well-watered environment which would support a primarily horticultural lifestyle. The Hidden Hills study area is located in an arid environment without permanent streams which would support a more mobile hunting lifestyle. The contrasting environments of these two study areas allowed for a study of the similarities and differences in the use of stone tools. Based on the results of the analysis and comparison of the stone tool and debitage assemblages, from sites in both areas throughout time, suggests that the people in the Land Hills study area actually seemed to be living a lifestyle similar to the people in the Hidden Hills area.

Greater Than Class C Radioactive Waste Environmental Impact Statement Pueblo Views on Environmental Resource Areas

Pueblo Writers Representatives, Stoffle, Richard W., Arnold, Richard W. 06 1900 (has links)
The Greater than Class C (GTCC) Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) evaluated the potential impacts from the construction and operation of a new facility or facilities, or use of an existing facility, employing various disposal methods (geologic repository, intermediate depth borehole, enhanced near surface trench, and above grade vault) at six federal sites and generic commercial locations. For three of the locations being considered as possible locations, consulting tribes were brought in to comment on their perceptions on how GTCC low level radioactive waste would affect Native American resources (land, water, air, plants, animals, archaeology, etc.) short and long term. The consulting tribes produced essays that were incorporated into the EIS and these essays are in turn included in this collection. This essay was produced by members of the culturally affiliated tribes to Los Alamos National Lab.

The target text narrates the meeting of Glauce, (the young one), Medea (the woman) and the love of Medea (the old one), three women "in a sort of desert outside of time and space" according to the words of the author. Punctuating the speech of these women, the voice of Corifeu is perceived, often in the dark. Thus, we propose a critical reflection, turning our gaze to the protagonists of this poetic work, whose speeches are characterized by the following questions: "What is my place in exile? Do I belong to the exile ? "Such questions reinforce a longstanding demand of women, not only in Athens, but in many other places, especially the foreign ones. In order to understand these banks and the reason why there are so many crossings, many of them forced, we choose exile as a theme, considering it a object of interest not only of the Classics, but also of the cultural studies, for example. Our aim is to show, comparatively, how the so called "dialogue" between Euripides and Clara Garcia is constructed, trying also to discover another reading for the Medea myth, parallel or beyond the metaphor itself, concerning especially the heroin journeys. As pointed out by Jan Felix Gaertner, one of the authors that support our research, exile "has been one of the most productive literary themes in the literature of the twentieth century" (2007, p. 1) and has become a central theme in postcolonial literature or in association with another themes related to distance, separation, displacement, detachment and diaspora. Our hypothesis is to recognize the exile as a device, as Agamben would define (2009) – a key technical term in Foucault's thinking strategy, - not only a political device but also an existential one. All of this analysis, according to Medea, of Euripides, who immortalized her as an infanticide, but not without questioning her status as a foreign woman. In order to study this condition, we support ourselves especially in the works of Pierre Vidal - Naquet (1999) and Vernant (2009), Queiroz (1998) and Jasinski (2012). The following studies don’t seem to contradict our hypothesis, given their hybridization aspect: Sara Forsdyke (2005) and Gayatri C. Spivak (2014). The theoretical syllabus about the theater - from Greek tragedy to the contemporary scene – is based on the following works: Albin Lesky, Jacqueline Rommily, Marie - Claude Hubert and Patrice Pavis (2011). Pontuando a fala dessas mulheres, ouvimos a voz do Corifeu, quase sempre à penumbra.
