Cloud-Based Alerting System for IP-Telephony : A prototype development

An increasing number of people in Sweden are having problems with their hearing ability. The three major tools to aid hearing-impaired and deaf individuals are: hearing aids, special telephony, and alerting systems. Both hearing aids and telephony have seen a huge technical development. Hearing aids have gone from huge ponderous devices to small delicate in-ear devices. Simple text telephones have evolved into total conversation telephones with audio, video, and text all operating in real time. Although smart lamps and other alerting services not specifically made for hearing-impaired individuals do exist, the development of alerting system is unsatisfactory. The gap in technology is a huge problem and integration between modern products and alerting systems is getting harder. This thesis explores how to close this gap. The result of this thesis project is a prototype that provides the missing technological link between an alerting systems and modern smart devices. An eventual product should support all kinds of services, but the prototype is limited to solving the problem of connecting an alerting system to a modern total conversation telephones. The prototype was evaluated and based on the evaluation data a timeline was created. An overall positive response towards the product exists and the timeline had adding more third party services (such as Skype and FaceTime) as a high priority. The complete timeline as well as adding Signal Initiation Protocol support is left as future work. / I Sverige har antalet personer med hörselskada ökat de senaste åren. För att hjälpa de med hörselproblem finns det tre viktiga hjälpmedel: hörapparater, special telefoner och varseblivningssystem. Stora teknologiska framsteg har skett för både hörapparater och special telefoner. Hörapparater har gått från stora otympliga apparater till små nätta anordningar som man har i örat. Enkla texttelefoner är idag komplexa system som stödjer både video, ljud och text i realtid. Även fast smarta lampor och andra varseblivningsprodukter existerar så är utveckling för varseblivning speciellt gjorda hörselskadade och döva undermåliga. Gapet som skapats mellan moderna varseblivningsprodukter och varseblivning som hjälpmedel växer sig allt större. Denna rapport ska undersöka detta gap. Resultatet av detta projekt är en prototyp som tillhandahåller den teknologin som ska länka modern varseblivning och varseblivning som hjälpmedel. Den tänkta produkten kan användas för många olika tjänster men i detta projekt är den begränsad till total konversations telefoner. Prototypen har blivit utvärderad och en tidslinje, baserad på utvädringen, har skapats. Tidslinjen ska beskriva kommande tjänster och enheter som skall kunna användas tillsammans med prototypen. Det visar sig att den skapade prototypen blev positivt mottagen och att tjänster som Skype och Facetime skulle ha hög prioritering på tidslinjen.

The fast-growing popularity of Cloud Computing has driven the consideration of Low-Code Development Platforms (LCDP), built securely in the cloud infrastructure, to support the transformation of the healthcare system. Low-Code Development Platforms are being considered by enterprises around the world to deliver rapid software development, continuous delivery, and continuous integration of their application systems. The William Osler Health System is recognized for its adoption of technological innovations for improved patient experience and satisfaction. Its innovations include the use of the Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare platforms; and Microsoft 365 and Power Platform services with embedded Low-Code technology to automate and optimize internal operational processes. The aim of this master’s thesis is to demystify the concept of cloud-based Low-Code Application Development approaches to healthcare software development by using a case study of a healthcare application within the systems being built to support operational processes in the William Osler Health System. A Cloud-based Software System for online Multimedia Examinations

With the advancement in information technology, online assessments are getting more attention and online examinations are regarded as important parts of online learning. Online examinations can be easily taken by remote students, help the students get exam results quickly and save their time; online examinations also aid instructors in collecting students' exam answers and generating the exam reports effectively. In addition, online examinations can help reduce cost and save trees for our world. Multimedia elements like images, graphics, video and audio have been widely integrated into online learning environments. They not only help instructors design more engaging online learning content, but also help provide more interactive and pleasant learning experience for learners. However, integrating multimedia elements into online examination systems is rarely reported. Multimedia elements generally consume amounts of computing resources in a separated software system running on a single computer. "Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)" has become a new software paradigm and cloud-based software systems are becoming more attractive due to their dynamic scalability and effective usage of computing resources. Yet, how to effectively integrate multimedia elements into a cloud-based software system for online examinations is not significantly investigated. Although a variety of online-assessment tools have been developed, few of them adopt the "Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)" paradigm and most of them focus on the assessment in a specific domain or an application area with short of multimedia elements. There is a lack of a comprehensive software solution for online multimedia examinations. This thesis tries to utilize the "Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)" paradigm, design and develop a cloud-bAsed softwaRe systEm for oNline multimediA examinationS (ARENAS), and explore a comprehensive software solution for the online assessment field. ARENAS employs a multi-tiered client-server architecture and includes five subsystem modules: user module, question repository module, exam module, exam report module and configuration module. The developed cloud-based software system can present online questions with multimedia elements, and also support a myriad of question types, flexible accounts to the exam-takers, randomized question order in an online exam, flexible grading mechanisms, and analytical exam reports. For instructors, the developed system can help design more engaging online questions; for exam-takers, the developed system can help provide more user-friendly experience; for other educators and researchers, the design and development processes of ARENAS can be taken as a reference to designing and developing other large-scale cloud-based educational software systems. / Master of Science

A Cloud-Based Visual Simulation Environment for Traffic Networks

Cloud-based Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) are highly complex systems compared to stand-alone IDEs that are installed on client devices. Today, the visual simulation environments developed as services on the cloud can offer similar features as client-based IDEs thanks to the advancements to the cloud technologies. However, most of the existing visual simulation tools are developed for client-based systems. Moving towards the cloud for visual simulation environments can provide better collaboration for simulation developers, easy access to the software, and less client hardware dependency. Proper guidance for the development of visual simulation tools can help researchers to develop their tools as a service on the cloud. This thesis presents a Cloud-based visuAl simulatioN enVironment for trAffic networkS (CANVAS), providing a framework that tackles challenges on the cloud-based visual simulation tools. CANVAS offers a set of tools for the composition and visualization of simulation models for the traffic network problem domain. CANVAS uses an asynchronous visualization protocol with efficient resource utilization on the server, enabling concurrent usage of the IDE. The simulation is executed on the server while the visualization is processed on the client-device within web browsers enabling execution-heavy simulations to thin clients. The component-based architecture of CANVAS offers a fully decoupled system that provides easier development and maintenance. The architecture can be used for the development of other cloud-based visual simulation IDEs. The CANVAS design and asynchronous visualization protocol show that advanced visualization capabilities can be provided to the client without depending on the client hardware. / Master of Science

Risks and rewards of cloud computing in the UK public sector: A reflection on three Organisational case studies

Yes / Government organisations have been shifting to cloud-based services in order to reduce their total investments in IT infrastructures and resources (e.g. data centers), as well as capitalise on cloud computing’s numerous rewards. However, just like any other technology investments there are also concerns over the potential risks of implementing cloud-based technologies. Such concerns and the paucity of scholarly literature focusing on cloud computing from a governmental context confirm the need for exploratory research and to draw lessons for government authorities and others in order to ensure a reduction in costly mistakes. This paper therefore investigates the implementation of cloud computing in both a practical setting and from an organisational user perspective via three UK local government authorities. Through the qualitative case study enquiries, the authors are able to extrapolate perceived rewards and risks factors which are mapped against the literature so that emergent factors can be identified. All three cloud deployments resulted in varying outcomes which included key rewards such as improved information management, flexibility of work practices and also posed risks such as loss of control and lack of data ownership to the organisations. These findings derived from the aggregated organisational user perspectives will be of benefit to both academics and practitioners engaged in cloud computing research and its strategic implementation in the public sector.

Knowledge management cloud-based solutions in small enterprises

Purpose – The aim of this study is to determine if adopting cloud-based knowledge management is a viable way forward for small enterprises and to investigate what are the main factors that might facilitate or inhibit these companies to adopt such solutions.Design/Methodology/Approach - In order to understand the main factors that could influence the adoption of a cloud-based knowledge management solution in small enterprises, I used a qualitative research approach, based on four semi-structured interviews with four small companies from Romania.Findings – The results of the study suggest that implementing knowledge management in the cloud is particularly beneficial for small enterprises, as a lower investment in IT infra-structure can create a competitive advantage and help them implement knowledge man-agement activities as a strategic resource. Moreover, the study suggests that relative ad-vantage, compatibility and technology readiness will influence companies in moving their knowledge to the cloud. Also, the study reveals that companies which did not adopt such a solution had already established systems for managing knowledge and failed to realize its benefits, it was not perceived as needed, they had a low level of awareness or cited security and uncertainty reasons.

Cloud based platform for real time Gait analysis : System component: Mobile architecture

Today gait analysis are performed in laboratories with expensive equipment and people must visit the labs to perform several supervised tests. The goal of this project is to develop a platform enables gait analysis with the accelerometer sensor in a mobile phone. This would allow more people to do gait analysis, as smart phones are widely available and cheap equipment compared to lab equipments. In order to solve this task a mobile application and a cloud server was created. The mobile application can gather data from the internal accelerometer sensor and a medical grade sensor simultaneously and send the data to the cloud server. When two sensors are used the symmetry between the left foot and the right foot can be measured, although the system works with only one sensor aswell. On the cloud server the accelerometer data is analysed and gait analysis is done on the data and visualized on a web page. The mobile application can collect data for 4 hours at a sampling rate of 120Hz and two sensors are used. When sending data collected from two sensors to the cloud at a sampling rate of 120 Hz the amount of data is approximately 21.96 Mb/h. The goal of the project was to create a proof-of-concept platform to do gait analysis and that goal was fullled and a fully functional platform was developed.
