The Actor-Interface Case of Development Intervention in the Conservation of Mount Cameroon National Park, Buea, CameroonTafon, Voma Ralph January 2013 (has links)
Critics of Integrated Conservation and Development Projects (ICDPs) have argued that participatory approachesand trade-offs are key to effective development interventions for rural populations living adjacent to protected areas. Based on an actor-interface framework, this thesis explores among other things, the discontinuities and/or linkages between those formalized narratives surrounding the creation andmanagement of Mount Cameroon National Park (MCNP), and their actual implementation, where there are multiple actors with divergent rationalities and interests. Specifically, this thesis examines the experiences and perceptions of the Park’s rural populations vis-à-vis the participatory-driven socio-economic development of their rurality. Interview results show that while the socio-economic potentials of the Park’s conservation to the rural poor have been touted, the fragmented and ad hoc nature of these benefits seriously undermine their poverty-alleviating capacity for marginalized communities. Furthermore, this thesis shows that while participatory approaches may constitute a major technique for involving rural populations in decision-making processes that affect their lives, the benefits fall largely to influential local elites, and that community participation is sometimes sought only for less important decision-making activities. This thesis concludes that in order for ICDPs to contribute effectively to eliminating poverty traps for marginalized communities, development interventions must not only be the result of rural people’s expressed priorities, but development practitioners must also have the necessary training to understand poverty traps and development problems as nested issues that must be addressed in a comprehensive and holistic manner. The paper also suggests that ICDPs must develop rural people’s capacity in conservation activities such that they can benefit from ecotourism and other conservation-related employment, in meaningful ways.

Tuberculosis case detection among HIV positive persons in a hospital in EthiopiaTedla Mezemir Damte 28 March 2014 (has links)
Collaborative TB/HIV management is essential to prevent and treat TB among
HIV-positive TB patients, and to ensure that HIV-positive TB patients are
detected and treated appropriately.
This quantitative, descriptive, contextual study identified problems encountered
during the implementation of TB case detection among HIV-positive individuals in
one Ethiopian hospital. During December 2012, 300 checklists were completed
about HIV-positive patients’ TB/HIV collaborative management, as reflected in
their files.
Only 60.2% of HIV-positive patients, who should have received Isoniazid
preventive treatment (IPT), were placed on this treatment. X-rays and laboratory
examinations of sputum samples were not done according to the Ethiopian
guidelines. Most TB patients’ initial screening was done by nurses, not doctors,
and included only symptom screening without CD4 count considerations.
Managers and healthcare personnel should improve IPT, especially for those
with early HIV infection and timely effective treatment for those suffering from TB,
before complications arise / Health Studies / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)

Previous issue date: 2017-02-20 / Payment for Enviromental Services -PES policies have been consolidating as a strategy for the management of natural resources in urban areas. In São Paulo, the Programa Córrego Limpo - PCL promoted by SABESP since 2007 aims to revert the degradation of water courses, contributing to an environmental improvement of urban natural resources. The PCL comprises the execution of infrastructure works to clean up the streams, monitoring actions and development of environmental education programs for the population. According to the strategic role for urban water resources and the results found by PCL, this program was chosen as object of research. The general objective of the present work is to explore the feasibility of proposal of payment scheme for environmental services of water resources in urban areas from the PCL. The methodological strategy of this work consists of an Exploratory - Descriptive research elaborated from the reflection and analysis of existing documents. The results of the research allowed, in the light of the comparison between data obtained from the bibliographical review and documentary data, to characterize the actions of the PCL as suppliers of environmental services; identify the environmental services that are offered by the PCL and identify the actors that make up a PSA arrangement from the current PCL design. Some environmental services offered by the PCL refer to: water purification, regulation of water borne diseases, regulation of natural damages and others. The PCL holds the potential for creating a PES scheme as the program offers a diverse range of environmental services. A PES scheme elaborated within the PCL structure is in line with what is proposed by the São Paulo PDE that regulates the PES as a policy to enable the conservation of forests and water. One of the main contributions of this research to practice refers to the proposal of PES schemes in urban areas as a strategy for city management. It is recommended that future research should focus on the establishment of PES schemes in urban areas as a model of environmental management in cities.
