Dream of a thousand heroes: the archetypal hero in contemporary mythology, with reference to The sandman by Neil Gaiman

Landman, Mario 30 June 2006 (has links)
Twentieth century American fiction assimilates archetypes of traditional mythologies, in particular the hero archetype, to create a contemporary mythology which relays social issues relevant to its age. This is first approached by creating a theoretical framework, which primarily consists of both Jungian theories of the collective unconscious and the model on which Joseph Campbell based his conception of the archetype in what is known as myth criticism. The theoretical framework also introduces and describes the graphic novel and its use of characterisation distinctive to post-modern fiction. The Sandman, which is the subject of this study, is then contextualised against the backdrop of the evolution of the American comic book, with its influence of folklore, mythology and visual presentation. Through an overview and analysis of The Sandman series as a whole, as well as a reading of its pivotal narrative, The Kindly Ones, this thesis explores the way in which The Sandman fulfils its purpose of integrating an archetypal hero into contemporary mythology. This is achieved by validating claims proposing the existence of a contemporary mythology through an analysis of Morpheus, The Sandman's protagonist and his unique heroic journey. The conclusion reached is that The Sandman indeed represents a contemporary mythology that contains a new form of social commentary, incorporating archetypes from traditional mythology and re-evaluating the role of the hero in this day and age. / Afrikaans & Theory of Literature / M. Techronomicon (novel) ; and The weapon shop : the relationship between American science fiction and the US military (dissertation)

Dedman, Stephen January 2008 (has links)
Techronomicon Techronomicon is a science fiction novel that examines far-future military actions from several different perspectives. Human beings have colonized several planets with help from the enigmatic and more technologically advanced Zhir, who gave spaceships and habitable worlds to those they deemed suitable and their descendants. The Joint Expeditionary Force is the military arm of the Universal Faith, called in when conflicts arise that the Faith decides are beyond the local government and militia and require their intervention. Leneveldt and Roader are JEF officers assigned to Operation Techronomicon, investigating what seems to be a Zhir-built defence shield around the planet Lassana. Another JEF company sent to Kalaabhavan after the murder of the planets Confessor-General loses its CO to a land-mine, and Lieutenant Hellerman reluctantly accepts command. Chevalier, a civilian pilot, takes refugees fleeing military-run detention camps on Ararat to a biological research station on otherwise uninhabited Lila. The biologists on Lila discover a symbiote that enables humans to photosynthesize, which comes to the attention of Operation Techronomicon and the JEF's Weapons Research Division. Leneveldt and Roeder, frustrated by the lack of progress on Lassana, are sent to Lila to detain the biologists, who flee into the swamps. Hellerman's efforts to restore peace on Kalaabhavan are frustrated by the Confessors, and his company finds itself besieged by insurgents. The novel explores individuals' motives for choosing or rejecting violence and/or military service; the lessons they learn about themselves and their enemies; and the possible results of attempts to forcibly suppress ideas.

"Qua comando mi" : a estereotipação do colono italiano no universo de Radicci, do cartunista Iotti / a estereotipação do colono italiano no universo de Radicci, do cartunista Iotti

Menegotto, Roberto Rossi 22 August 2017 (has links)
Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2017-10-02T16:53:53Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Roberto Rossi Menegotto.pdf: 22481208 bytes, checksum: 081182e493b4ac14b9c420263bd096a2 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2017-10-02T16:53:53Z (GMT). The analysis starts with the selection of three categories in the comics series: character development, description of spaces in which the narrative takes place, and the identity conflict existing among characters. For this purpose, connections are established with the historical, social, and cultural context of the Italian Colonization Region in Rio Grande do Sul, in order to verify how the stereotyping of the Italian immigrant cultural features happens. The theoretical basis is multidisciplinary, including: Literary Studies, History, Sociology, Social Communication and Visual Arts. From the results, one can consider that stereotyping historical data can (re)create identities while preserving and providing new meanings for cultural habits and manners.

Tiras cômicas online: mediação e interações na linguagem das tiras / Online comic strips: mediation and interaction on the comic strips language

Castro, Thiago Estevão Calixto de 11 February 2016 (has links)
The study aims to analyze comic strips on the internet, from three different artists: Carlos Ruas, creator of "Um Sábado Qualquer", André Farias, of "Vida de Suporte," and William Leite, author of "Willtirando". The discussion covers the relationship between comics and technology by analyzing the comic strip and the construction of its meaning. The qualitative reflection is aggregated by quantitative data, through which the work shows possible outcomes for the language of the online comic strips, such as the expansion in the format; increased hybridization with various types of images; and the approach phenomenon between the spheres author/reader in digital format. Productions of a most unusual kind also were discussed: the digital comic strips, that incorporate animated effects on its narrative. At the end of the study, we present an online comic strip prototype from the most popular formats used by the authors, in order to reiterate the nature of the comic strips: a brief narrative whose outcome is unexpected and results in humor.

Visões de São Paulo: a marca urbana segundo Luiz Gê / Visions of São Paulo: the urban mark according to Luiz Gê

Santos, Guilherme Caldas dos 10 March 2017 (has links)
This research intends to reflect about the comics of Luiz Gê about Avenida Paulista, considering the dialogue between the discourses of paulistanity and the ideals of Brazilian modernity. The goal is to investigate how the comics artist builds, through his narrative, representations of São Paulo that establish critics and, simultaneously, reiterate the symbols of industrial development, technological modernization and main financial, economic and industrial center of the country. Luiz Gê sought to set many of his stories in the city of São Paulo throughout his career, making the capital city more than just a scenario for his entanglements. São Paulo is present both literally, with its urban landscape and its architectural landmarks - as the 9 de Julho avenue, the building of Banespa or the Avenida Paulista - as indirect, through metaphors - as the parody of the Grito do Ipiranga episode. We will try to understand his comics as part of a process of change of power axes in Brazil using the concept of “cultural horizon” proposed by Feenberg (2010), taking into account its relation with the questions of hegemony pertinent to the moment in which Fragmentos completos (Complete Fragments), the story of Avenida Paulista in comics, is produced. Another aspect to be analyzed is Luiz Gê’s approach to Avenida Paulista on the occasion of its centenary, in 1991: an urban landmark of the city that materializes at the same time that it represents many of São Paulo’s yearnings and contradictions.
