Breaking Down Silos: Developing Trauma-Informed Care Through a Community Based Learning Collaborative

The Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency (ARC) treatment framework is a “whole-systems” intervention which focuses on children and youth with complex trauma histories and attachment difficulties. ARC encourages intervention in layers to build a safe and secure caregiving system around a child. The layers include the child, caregivers, treatment providers, child welfare workers, teachers, and case managers. We developed an ARC Community Based Learning Collaborative (CBCL) to bring these layers together to create a safe andsupportive group experience and environment in which members of the child’s caregiving system can begin to build a common language and understanding of trauma that results in collaborated and coordinated trauma informed interventions to improve symptoms and decrease disrupted placement for youth in care. The overall goal of the ARC CBLC is to build highly functioning teams whose members have the knowledge and skills to apply the core principles of the ARC framework in accordance with their roles in the child’s caregiving system to promote healing and resiliency. This session will outline the development and implementation of the ARC CBLC, outcomes,and lessons learned.

Relationships Between Podiatrists & Medical Doctors: An Examination through Network Analysis

This thesis examines how a more powerful and a less powerful profession --allopathic medicine and podiatry -- are linked in a series of networks through patient referrals and practice activities. The importance of professional networks is that they link different professions such as podiatry and allopathic medicine in ways which direct attention away from ranking the power of fields or viewing them as endlessly in conflict over occupational turf (traditional research questions) to questions of the actual and regularized relationships diverse professions have with one another. This thesis analyzes professional training and activity variables related to the emergence of networks and another set of conditions that results once occupational networks become established. Data were obtained from a mailed questionnaire survey of podiatrists who practice in the Chicago metropolitan area (N-168). Analysis consists of comparisons between podiatrists who are in networks with physicians and those who are not: and between DPM's who are in heterophilous (general referral) versus homophilous (surgical) networks with MD's. T -tests are the major form of statistical analysis used in this thesis. The findings of this thesis support the conclusion that the educational training and podiatric practice mandates (e.g., hospital staff appointment) are important determinants of the formation of networks with MD's. Friendship and social interaction patterns between DPM's and MD's and attitudes of DPM's toward podiatry were found to be highly related to network relationships between podiatrists and medical doctors. Profiles of podiatrists' professional activities and the extensiveness of their referral communication with MD's also were found to be related to the type of network podiatrists are in with medical doctors. Overall, results of this thesis clearly show that networks do link podiatrists and physicians and that such networks have important consequences for the professional activities and orientations of DPM's.

This research focuses on the importance on the Millennial Generation and their perceptions of food buzzwords. Since the Millennial Generation is the largest group purchasing and preparing their own foods, the food industry is becoming dependent on their buying preferences. A survey reflected the participants’ demographics and their buying preferences based on a series of food buzzwords when they are purchasing foods. Results show the Millennial Generation prefers “local” buzzwords. As the Millennial Generation continues to purchase foods for themselves and their families, it can be expected their choices will encourage others to do the same based on their family shopping factors, social interaction, and relationship building traits.

IDENTIFYING PERCEIVED RISKS TO ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS AND NEEDS FOR RISK COMMUNICATION IN A RURAL APPALACHIAN COMMUNITY

The goal of this study is to determine issues rural Appalachian residents consider most important, their perceived environmental health risk, and how community engagement can potentially improve those issues. The University of Kentucky Superfund Research Center held the Appalachian Community Health and Well-being Forum at the Letcher County Cooperative Extension Office in Eastern Kentucky. A four-member panel consisted of two local health officials, a nutrition expert, and a federal scientist; answered questions from community members. The expert panel and audience members shared concerns, success stories, and highlighted efforts to promote health in the region. Community members completed a questionnaire collecting information on perceived environmental health risk, fruit and vegetable intake, and basic demographic information. The concerns raised by community members were chronic disease, poverty, pollution, mental health, and wellness. Proposed solutions were compliance, nutrition, physical activity, education, empathy, funding, community engagement, awareness, holistic health, prevention, and insurance/policy change. The programs in place to combat these issues are FARMACY, Community Health Workers, transportation services, mobile dental vans, Kentucky River Watershed Watch, research, policy changes, and the CLIK program. The questionnaire showed that residents are aware of the types of pollution in their community and believe that illness is caused by pollution in their environment. Community residents feel that pollution is not something they should have to live with, they act to protect themselves from pollution, and likely to engage in community efforts to stop pollution in their community.

Empowering Early Childhood Teachers: A Community Based Participatory Research Approach

Despite a significant increase in the demands for teachers’ professional development, the work environments of teachers have not developed at a comparable rate. Due to research on inequity in teacher work environment, the purpose of this case study was to explore the role of empowerment in the early childhood education (ECE) workforce, using Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) as a framework. This project was done with 5 educators in a for‑profit ECE center. Over the course of five weekly sessions, the educators completed questionnaires, interviews, and engaged in weekly focus groups geared towards providing the teachers with an opportunity to share their experiences and collaborate on solutions for change in their work environment. Overall, descriptive statistics of the quantitative data did not demonstrate an increase in empowerment over the course of the project. However, the six emerging themes (i.e., Frustration with Center Operations and Corporate, Empowerment, Communication, Emotional and Physical Well‑Being, Teacher Unity, and Teacher Training and Education) provided important insights into the nature of teacher empowerment in the ECE setting, which informed lessons learned and future directions for research.

Comparison of the University of Iowa's community-based and University-based pediatric dental clinics

The Muscatine Pediatric Dentistry Clinic (MPDC) at the Muscatine Center for Social Action (MCSA) was established January 4th, 2005. It is a partnership between the MCSA and The University of Iowa's Department of Pediatric Dentistry. MPDC operates Tuesdays (care provided by senior dental students) and Thursdays (care provided by pediatric dentistry residents). Students and residents are supervised by a pediatric dentistry faculty member. MPDC's mission is to provide dental care to low income children residing in Muscatine and Louisa counties, in Iowa. Care includes diagnostic, preventive, restorative, and emergency services. MPDC targets a population that has been traditionally underserved by local dentists including Medicaid-enrolled children and low income children without dental insurance. MPDC offers dental students the opportunity to gain experience treating children with the ultimate goal of increasing the number of practicing general dentists who serve pediatric populations. MPDC completed 6 years of operation on January 4th, 2010. The main goals of this study were to describe patient characteristics, clinical activities and parental satisfaction at the Muscatine clinic and to compare characteristics of the Muscatine clinic to those of the University of Iowa's pediatric dentistry clinic at the College of Dentistry. Clinical activities and patient profile variables for MPDC were reported for the entire fiscal year 2009-10 year. Variables include patient age, gender, type of insurance, number of dental procedures completed, type of treatment received, and number of visits per patient. A satisfaction survey was given to the parent of each patient presenting to the MPDC clinic between November 16th, 2009 and January 17th, 2010. Two broad research questions were addressed in this study: 1) Are parents satisfied with MPDC and the treatment provided to their children? 2) Are there are differences in the population served and treatment provided at the Muscatine clinic and the University of Iowa pediatric dentistry clinic at the College of Dentistry? The results of this study provide information that contributes to a fuller understanding about the population served by MPDC, the treatment received, and parental satisfaction with the clinic. It also compares characteristics of the Muscatine clinic to the University of Iowa's pediatric dentistry clinic at the College of Dentistry. The results of this study may help guide MPDC staff and the University of Iowa's Department of Pediatric Dentistry in future decision-making regarding clinic activities and dental school curriculum.

Service-learning's impact on dental students' attitude to community service

This study is aimed to evaluate service-learning program's impact on senior dental students' attitude to community service at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry. Experience gained through service-learning in dental school may positively impact dental students' attitude to community service that will eventually lead into providing care to the underserved. Two surveys were administered to 105 senior dental students. For the first survey (post-test), students reported their attitude to community service after the service-learning program completion. For the second survey (pre-test), students reported their attitude prior to the program retrospectively. Seventy six students responded to the post-test and fifty six students responded to the pre-test. A repeated-measure mixed-model analysis indicated that overall there was a change between pre-test and post-test. Scales of connectedness, normative helping behavior, benefits, career benefits, and intention showed a significant pre-test and post-test difference. A relationship between attitude to community service and student characteristics such as age, gender, ethnicity, and volunteer activity was also examined. Only ethnicity showed a significant difference. In conclusion, service-learning program at VCU School of Dentistry has positively impacted senior dental students' attitude to community service.

Content within the community: a look at content driven community-based art practices and the results of an after school art program

The purpose of this research was to study the ways in which a content driven after-school art program focused on community-based art projects inspires high school students to create work that are personal and purposeful. This study involved members of the Hempstead High School Art Club. I collected data in various ways including focus groups video recording, journal reflections, and observations with Art club members who meet monthly to discuss the project and biweekly to work on the project. My plan was to gather information on the effectiveness of a content driven after school art club in the teaching and learning of visual art. Through my research I hoped to discover the benefits and drawbacks of an after school art program as compared to a regular art classroom setting and the implementation of content driven art projects. Finally, I hoped to study and analyze the effects such a program would have on a student's understanding of the purpose of creating community-based art.

Adolescent Relationship Concerns and Perceived Gains from a Relationship Education Course

This study was conducted with survey data drawn from a relationship education initiative in the state of Utah. Teenagers participated in the Premarital Interpersonal Choices and Knowledge (PICK) program (also known as How to Avoid Falling for a Jerk or Jerk-ette), a program designed for single individuals. They answered questions before and after the course, and I used their responses to answer two questions: (1) What concerns do middle-adolescents (ages 15-17) have about romantic relationships? (2) What do middle-adolescents gain from participation in PICK? Data from 605 participants were combined and analyzed for themes. Teenage participants expressed concerns about gaining the skills and knowledge necessary for healthy building relationships. They also wanted to avoid risky relationship behaviors such as cheating, abuse, jealousy, and sexual coercion. They were interested in how relationships with peers and parents affect romantic relationships. These concerns aligned with the gains that they reported from participation in PICK. Taking their responses together, participants said that PICK addressed their concerns by providing training in relationship skills and knowledge to help them avoid risky relationships. They were especially appreciative of the Relationship Attachment Model, a visual tool created to help them evaluate pacing, sequence, and behaviors in healthy relationships.
