What makes the difference? : a study of the purchase process from a buyer's perspective

The changing dynamics of the fashion retailing industry has progressed and become a global multibillion industry, (Solomon & Rabolt, 2007). It has put a lot of pressure on the fast fashion retailers were key strategies in order to maintain a strong position in market, must be established, (Doyle, Moore & Morgan, 2006). As the increasing number of new fashion retailing companies have emerged and established, the fashion segment has become a market leader, (Mehrjoo & Pasek, 2014). Fashion consumers expect and thrive on continuous change were new fashion products always have to be available in store on an everyday basis, (Bruce & Daly, 2006). Most companies aim to ensure the speed to market as a competitive strategy by offering rapidly fashion trends. Fast fashion companies need to deliver their product offer to the customers before their competitors do and the choice of supply chain strategy gets critical, (Porter 1996). Gadde and Håkansson (2009), argue that a company's purchase process is the answer of this matter. The importance of the purchase process has therefore become of great focus. The issue of defining what it is that actually makes the difference when working with the purchase process is complex, with several aspects to take in consideration. The aim of this report is to present the most significant activities within the purchase process that makes a company competitive in the market. As buyers carry the main responsibility over their department groups it became essential to answer the research questions from their perspective. The buyers’ sees a general problematic in how to influence the purchase chain in a larger scale. However, they claim that the most essential factors, that makes a difference for a company to be successful within the fast fashion industry was concluded to be: short-term and long-term solutions within the daily work primary within the team. The buyers’ solutions are presented in the form of clear goals within the process work, and tools for how to reach the set goals. There must be a clarity through the organization which generates an 80/20 mindset were all actors are focusing on what it is that makes the difference. Communication is a key tool one should work with further on, both at an internal and an external level and as it creates the right conditions for the workflow in a more efficient way. This is for everyone to share a clearer understanding of and be able to work effectively towards the rapid changes that are performed over the season. Lastly, the buyers appear to have an ambiguous picture of how the fashion industry will progress. They are proud of how far Sweden has come with its identity in the fashion industry and the prominent clothing brands. But on the other hand, they are concerned for the how much further the fashion industry can be pushed, taking the environmental and sustainable viewpoint in consideration.

Como consequência da crescente competitividade global, as empresas têm procurado melhorar seu desempenho, o que tem se tornado uma questão de sobrevivência e de diferencial competitivo. Isto tem exigido uma reavaliação constante dos valores para os clientes, provocando obsolescência das formas tradicionais de organização e exigido a organização das operações de forma sistêmica e integrada. Neste panorama, como proposta de direcionamento estratégico, tático e operacional, destaca-se a administração da qualidade e produtividade por macroprocessos organizacionais (MAPO). Esta é estudada sob o prisma dos avanços da Tecnologia da Informação (TI), da disseminação da Filosofia da Qualidade (FQ) e das contribuições da Potencialização e Trabalho em Equipe (PTE), sob um enfoque sistêmico e considerando a cultura das organizações. Neste estudo, procurou-se identificar correntes da MAPO, bem como discutir a forma como as empresas estão absorvendo e praticando seus elementos em suas operações. Discutiu-se o projeto de reestruturação e a administração efetiva desta nova organização. Desenvolveu-se também pesquisa exploratória em casos reais de empresas praticando a MAPO, complementada com a análise de casos documentados pela literatura. O estudo permitiu destacar sobre a MAPO que: os resultados são significativos e alinhados com as estratégias competitivas, desde que haja comprometimento da alta administração; os resultados mais relevantes são os relacionados aos critérios de velocidade e integração interna; a característica mais frequente é a identificação clara dos clientes externos e suas necessidades; característica das mais estabilizadas é o papel da gerência identificando os processos-chave e seus responsáveis. Embora as ações apoiadas pela tecnologia da informação sejam bastante frequentes, a integração com o cliente via informática ainda não é prática amplamente implementada. / As a result of growing global competition, companies have searched new ways of improving their performance. This has become a question of survival or competitive differentiation. This situation has forced a continuous learning about customer values, has made traditional organization look obsolete and has required the planning of operation management in a systemic and integrated way. In these times of turbulence, process management (or MAPO) seems to be the answer to these problems. In this study, process management is approached under different views, like development of Information Technology (IT), dissemination of Total Quality (TQ), and contributions of Empowerment and Cross-functional Teams (ECT), under a systemic approach and taking into account organizational culture. In this study, we have identified different ways of interpreting process management, and discussed how firms are applying MAPO elements in their operations. We have analyzed the business process redesign and the management of this new organization. We searched case examples from some organizations in order to verify how some of these new concepts have actually been used. Additionally, we analyzed the applications reported in the literature. The study of case examples allowed us to reinforce about MAPO that: good results are aligned with competitive strategies only if there is top management commitment; best results are related to speed and internal integration criteria; the most frequent characteristic is the objective identification of external customers and their requirements; and the managerial role of identifying key-processes and their owners is a common practice. Although operations based on Information Technology are the most frequent, customer integration by informatics is not widely implemented yet.

Incubadora como fator competitivo para empresas nascentes: o caso da incubadora tecnológica da Feevale / Incubator as a competitive factor for new enterprises: the case of the technological incubator of Feevale

The micro and small enterprises are taking a high importance position on the global scenario, influencing directly on the production of employment and income and on the regional development. Even being faster, flexible, innovator and willing to take risk they are more fragile, they don t have their own enough capital, little experience on management and difficulty on doing business. As a way to reduce the precocious high death rates of these enterprises and also to bring to the community the innovations created in the academy, arose the incubators that offer an environment specially planned to support the arising of competitive enterprises. From this scenario, this research has as the objective to do a survey of the internal and external factors considered important to the creation of competitive enterprises and verify what effectively the incubator offers, using as focus the Technological Incubator from University Center Feevale. Having as base the models of analysis of competitiveness from Ferraz et. al (1995) and Porter (1986) was done a questionnaire with twenty five variables. From these variables, the entrepreneur should choose what s the importance for the competitiveness of his enterprise and what s the role of the incubator for the carrying out of this variable. From this research we could conclude that there is disagreement between what s important for the enterprises and what s really offered by the incubator. This is evident in the fact that the internal variables are considered by the enterprises as important or very important and the incubator is contributing for its carrying out. Whereas the external variables are considered important or very important and the incubator doesn t contribute or contributes little on this for its carrying out. / As micro e pequenas empresas estão adquirindo uma posição de grande importância no cenário global, influenciando diretamente na geração de emprego, renda e no desenvolvimento regional. Mesmo sendo mais ágeis, flexíveis e dispostas a assumir riscos são também mais frágeis, pois possuem insuficiência de capital próprio, pouca experiência em gestão e dificuldade na comercialização. Como forma de diminuir as altas taxas de mortalidade precoce dessas empresas e para trazer à comunidade as inovações criadas na academia, surgiram as incubadoras, que oferecem um ambiente especialmente planejado para dar apoio ao surgimento de empresas competitivas. A partir desse cenário, a presente pesquisa teve como objetivo fazer um levantamento dos fatores internos e externos considerados importantes para a criação de empresas competitivas e verificar o que efetivamente a incubadora oferece, utilizando como foco a Incubadora Tecnológica do Centro Universitário Feevale. Tendo como base os modelos de análise de competitividade de Ferraz et. al (1995) e Porter (1986), foi elaborado um questionário com vinte e cinco questões. Nessas questões o empreendedor indicou o nível de importância dos fatores selecionados para a competitividade da sua empresa e qual a atuação da incubadora para a efetivação dos mesmos. Pela pesquisa, concluiu-se que há divergências entre o que é importante para as empresas e o que efetivamente é proposto pela incubadora. Tal evidência está no fato de que os fatores internos são considerados pelas empresas como importantes e muito importantes, e a incubadora contribui de forma satisfatória para a efetivação dos mesmos. Fatores externos, por sua vez, também foram assinalados como importantes e muito importantes pelas empresas e a incubadora não atende de forma satisfatória.

Esta lei visa conter as quebras de contratos firmados entre as operadoras e os consumidores e impedir reajustes abusivos de preços. A Agência Nacional de Saúde Suplementar (ANS) foi implementada em 2000 e passou a exigir o cumprimento de normas pelas operadoras. Dentre elas, houve a instituição do Plano de Contas Padrão que todas as operadoras são obrigadas a enviar a ANS. O objetivo geral da pesquisa consiste em analisar o desempenho econômico-financeiro da operadora Unimed Araxá, a partir Plano de Contas Padrão da ANS, entre os anos 2010 e 2015. A hipótese empregada é que a operadora Unimed Araxá possui estratégias competitivas que lhe permitem bons indicadores econômico-financeiros. Faremos um estudo de caso da operadora Unimed Araxá, que nos forneceu suas demonstrações contábeis e seus relatórios de gestão entre os anos 2010 e 2015 e, comparamos os indicadores de desempenho econômico-financeiro dessa cooperativa com outras da Federação, através das informações divulgadas no Anuário: Aspectos Econômico-Financeiros das Operadoras de Planos de Saúde. Essa comparação é tida como fundamental na análise de desempenho econômico- financeiro, pois permite o uso de padrões observados no setor para avaliar determinada empresa. Além da técnica de indicadores padrão, empregamos a análise vertical do Balanço Patrimonial e da Demonstração de Resultado do Exercício dessa operada para avalia-la ao longo dos anos. Essa análise nos permitirá atingir nosso objetivo geral e averiguar a hipótese adotada nessa pesquisa, especificamente para a Unimed Araxá. / The regulation of the private healthcare sector in the Brazilian market was instituted by Law 9.656 in 1998. This law aims to contain the breaches of contracts signed between the operators and consumers and prevent abusive price adjustments. The National Supplemental Health Agency (ANS) was implemented in 2000 and now requires compliance by operators. Among them, there was the establishment of the Standard Account Plan that all operators are required to send to ANS. The overall objective of the research is to analyze the economic and financial performance of the operator Unimed Araxá from ANS Standard Plan of Accounts between 2010 and 2015. The hypothesis employed is that the operator Unimed Araxá has competitive strategies that allow it to economic-financial indicators. We will carry out a case study of the operator Unimed Araxá, who provided us with its financial statements and management reports between 2010 and 2015, and compared the indicators of economic and financial performance of this cooperative with others in the Federation through the information disclosed in the Yearbook : Economic-Financial Aspects of Health Plan Operators. This comparison is considered fundamental in the analysis of economic and financial performance, since it allows the use of observed patterns in the sector to evaluate a certain company. In addition to the standard indicators technique, we used the vertical analysis of the balance sheet and income statement of the year of this operation to evaluate it over the years. This analysis will allow us to reach our general objective and to ascertain the hypothesis adopted in this research, specifically for Unimed Araxá.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar a proporção que assumem as atividades de serviços nas montadoras, as estratégias e trajetórias recentes em torno destas atividades, bem como analisar as implicações do desenvolvimento destas atividades no interior da indústria. Para este propósito, foram analisados os dados de desempenho financeiro de doze montadoras, as mais expressivas da indústria automobilística, bem como acompanhadas suas estratégias de serviços, ao longo do período 1998-2004. A partir dos dados financeiros das montadoras pesquisadas, extraídos dos relatórios anuais destas companhias, a pesquisa procurou avaliar a real dimensão das atividades de serviços entre as montadoras. Através da proporção que assumem os serviços nas contas do Balanço Patrimonial e nas contas de resultado, foi possível estabelecer, simultaneamente, o peso que assumem nos negócios totais das companhias e sua importância enquanto fonte geradora de lucros. Observa-se em geral um forte peso dos serviços nas companhias pesquisadas, motivado pelo movimento das montadoras em direção a estas atividades nos últimos anos, determinando conseqüências para a competitividade e para a estrutura industrial do setor. Por outro lado, a partir do acompanhamento das estratégias das companhias no período, principalmente através de notícias da imprensa especializada mundial, foi possível estabelecer suas trajetórias recentes em serviços e apontar algumas perspectivas. Foram acompanhadas não só as estratégias em serviços financeiros tradicionalmente fornecidos pelas montadoras, mas também o movimento recente de engajamento nos serviços baseados na telemática e internet. Os resultados obtidos neste trabalho permitem identificar os diferentes posicionamentos quanto às atividades de serviços pelas montadoras e algumas tendências recentes. / This work aims to assess the ratio taken by the car assembly companies service activities, their strategies and the recent trajectories surrounding these activities, as well as to evaluate the implications of the development of these activities within the industry. For this, twelve assembling companies the most significant in the automotive industry - had their financial performance data analyzed and their service strategies were followed up within the period 1998-2004. As from the financial data of the assembling companies researched, taken from these companies annual reports, the research sought to evaluate the real magnitude of the service activities among the assembling companies. As from the ratio taken by services in the Balance Sheet accounts and in the result accounts, it was possible to simultaneously establish the weight they assume in the companies total business and their importance while a profit-generating source. The significant weight of services can generally be observed in the companies researched, motivated by the movement of the assembling companies towards these activities in the last years, determining consequences for the competitiveness and for the sector industrial structure. On the other hand, from following the companies strategies in the period, mainly by means of news in the specialized world press, it was possible to establish their recent trajectories in services and to point out some perspectives. Not only the strategies in financial services traditionally provided by the assembling companies, but also the recent movement of engagement in services based on telematics and the internet were followed. The results obtained from this work allow identifying the different positioning as to the service activities by the assembling companies and some recent tendencies.

The tourism and hospitality sector is important to the Brazilian economy and, among the several touristic attractions in the state of Paraná, there is the city of Foz do Iguaçu, where about 26% of the state’s means of accommodation are concentrated. Thence, the present study aims at comparing the strategic positioning of Hotel Alfa in relation to the hospitality sector in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, PR, in light of Michael E. Porter’s generic strategies. Data collection was done by means of document research, application of questionnaires in hotels in Foz do Iguaçu, interviews with experts in the field of tourism and hospitality and an interview with the manager of Hotel Alfa. Through qualitative and quantitative analysis, three of Porter’s generic strategies were identified in the hotels that participated in this research. In the two-star category, the total cost leadership strategy stood out. In the three-star and four-star categories, the most largely adopted strategy was the differentiation one, and in the five-star category there was a preponderance of the differentiation and focus strategies. A type of hybrid strategy, with characteristics of more than one of Porter’s generic strategies, was also identified. Hotel Alfa predominantly presented the differentiation strategy, aiming at the quality of services offered and not neglecting cost control. The information collected from the hotels in the city and from Hotel Alfa are in line with the view of experts. It is a diverse market that has cost control and quality services as primary needs. Considering the competitiveness of the hospitality market in Foz do Iguaçu, the present study contributes to businessmen and competent agencies in the field in the sense that it provides them with a strategic view of the city’s hospitality market. The instruments of data collection used may serve as a means of self-analysis for the businesses which intend to review their current strategic positioning. / O sucesso alcançado pelas organizações pode estar relacionado com as estratégicas competitivas adotadas, principalmente para aquelas empresas que atuam em mercados de competição acirrada. O setor do turismo é importante na economia brasileira e, entre os diversos atrativos turísticos do Paraná, encontra-se a cidade de Foz do Iguaçu, que apresenta aproximadamente 26% dos meios de hospedagem do estado. Por esta razão, o presente estudo tem como objetivo comparar o posicionamento estratégico do Hotel Alfa com o setor hoteleiro de Foz do Iguaçu, PR, considerando as estratégias genéricas de Michael E. Porter. A coleta de dados utilizou a pesquisa documental, aplicação de questionários no setor hoteleiro de Foz do Iguaçu, entrevista com especialistas da área de turismo e hotelaria e entrevista com o gestor do Hotel Alfa. Por meio de análises qualitativas e quantitativas identificou-se a presença das três estratégias genéricas de Porter nos hotéis participantes da pesquisa, para a categoria de duas estrelas destacou-se a estratégia de liderança no custo total. Nas categorias de três e quatro estrelas a estratégia mais adotada é a de diferenciação, e na categoria de cinco estrelas destacaram-se a estratégia de diferenciação e enfoque. Um tipo de estratégia híbrida, que junta características de mais de uma estratégia genérica, também foi identificada. Voltado para a qualidade de seus serviços, sem se distanciar do controle de custos, o Hotel Alfa apresentou características predominantes da estratégia de diferenciação. As informações coletadas junto às empresas hoteleiras do município e do Hotel Alfa estão alinhadas com a visão dos especialistas, trata-se de um mercado diversificado, com controle de custos e serviço de qualidade como necessidades primordiais. Tendo em vista a competitividade do mercado hoteleiro de Foz do Iguaçu, o estudo contribui com empresários e órgãos competentes proporcionando uma visão estratégica do mercado hoteleiro municipal. Os instrumentos de coleta utilizados na pesquisa poderão servir de roteiro de autoanálise para as empresas que pretendem verificar o posicionamento estratégico que estão adotando.

The hotel industry in Stockholm is characterized by intense competition, and within the next couple of years the construction of a number new hotels is planed. As the number of hotels in Stockholm increase, the competition will increase and the importance of having well functioning strategies will become vital. The purpose of this essay is to examine how two hotels within the hotel industry in Stockholm experience and handle the competition. The two hotels that are included in the study are Clarion Hotel Stockholm and Scandic Continental. The essay derives from models and theories that are related to marketing and competition. Our study shows that the perception of competition varies, in addition to the fact that choice of competitive strategies varies dependent on the hotel’s concept. The hotel industry in Stockholm is divided into different areas, depending on which area hotels choose to serve the competitive environment will differ. A hotel with a specific niche will limit its competitors to a narrow number that operate within the same niche. The results of our study show evidence that the competition in the hotel industry in Stockholm is divided, and that this divisional competition will continue to increase as the industry develops. The building of new hotels in the next couple of years will aid the progress of a possible collaboration between the hotels in Stockholm in the future, and thus attract larger meetings and events. / Hotellbranschen i Stockholm kommun präglas av intensiva konkurrensförhållanden, och inom de nästkommande två åren planeras tio nya hotellbyggen i Stockholm kommun. I takt med att nyetableringarna ökar intensifieras konkurrensen mellan aktörerna och det blir allt viktigare att för aktörerna att hitta passande strategier för att hantera den rådande konkurrensen. Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka hur två aktörer inom hotellbranschen i Stockholm kommun uppfattar och hanterar konkurrensen. De aktörer som ingår i undersökningen är Clarion Hotel Stockholm samt Scandic Continental. De teorier och modeller som uppsatsen har utgått ifrån är relaterade till marknadsföring och konkurrens. Vår studie visar att uppfattningen om konkurrens, samt valet av strategier, skiljer sig åt beroende på vilken inriktning hotellen väljer. Hotellbranschen i Stockholm kommun är indelad i olika inriktningar och beroende på vilken inriktning man som aktör väljer att betjäna möts man av skilda konkurrensförhållanden. Ett hotell som väljer en specifik inriktning begränsar sina konkurrenter till ett få antal som är verksamma inom samma område. Resultaten visar tydliga tecken på en splittrad konkurrens inom Stockholm kommun samt att denna splittring troligtvis kommer att fortsätta öka i takt med utvecklingen av branschen. De nyetableringar som kommer att ske de nästkommande åren kommer att underlätta för ett möjligt samarbete mellan hotellen i Stockholm kommun för att locka till sig olika möten, kongresser och evenemang.

Branding strategies in the context of startup companies has been vaguely investigated. This is surprising since companies in the early startup phase recognize a need to quickly create brand equity in order to differentiate themselves from competitors to rise above the clutter in the market space. The objective of this study is therefore to investigate what branding strategies Swedish technology startup companies employ to create brand equity. Founders of four Swedish startup companies within the technology industry has been interviewed in order to gain insight in the context of startup companies and what branding strategies they employ. The authors present some common denominators between the branding strategies that are used. It is concluded that it is crucial for startups to create brand awareness. It is also recognized that startups rarely communicate company values. Instead, functional benefits and product characteristics are often communicated. Lastly, it appears that the overarching branding strategy of the studied startup companies is their emphasis on the importance of being perceived as different compared to competitors.

La administración estratégica y sus diferentes herramientas aplicadas a los procesos dentro de una organización han sido fundamentales para establecer objetivos y lineamientos de acción para los directivos. Esta investigación presenta y analiza investigaciones relevantes sobre las principales características y beneficios del proceso de administración estratégica y las técnicas que se implementan para lograr estrategias deliberadas que ofrece esta metodología. Por otro lado, la búsqueda de competitividad por parte de las organizaciones, mediante la aplicación de estrategias oportunas, hará que los directivos adopten habilidades que les permita afrontar los cambios en el mercado y generar ventajas competitivas. Este trabajo compara las técnicas de la administración estratégica con la teoría de estrategia competitiva, analizando cada una de las características principales de ambas corrientes; por un lado, las estrategias deliberadas establecidas en un período de largo plazo, frente a situaciones de incertidumbre y cambios en el mercado que refiere la teoría de aplicación de estrategias emergentes en el corto plazo. / Strategic management and its different tools applied to processes within an organization has been fundamental in establishing objectives and action guidelines for managers. This research presents and analyzes relevant research on the main characteristics and benefits of the strategic management process and the techniques that are implemented to achieve deliberate strategies offered by this methodology. On the other hand, the search for competitiveness by organizations, through the application of timely strategies, will make managers adopt skills that allow them to face changes in the market and generate competitive advantages. Estrategias competitivas empleadas por las empresas exportadoras de jengibre de la región Junín relacionadas con el proceso de internacionalización hacia el mercado de Estados Unidos (Periodo 2014-2018)

El presente trabajo de investigación tiene como objetivo identificar la relación entre las estrategias competitivas empleadas por las empresas exportadoras de jengibre de la región Junín con el proceso de internacionalización hacia el mercado de Estados Unidos en el periodo 2014-2018, tomando como fuente de medición las estrategias de liderazgo en costos, diferenciación y enfoque desarrolladas por Porter (1998). Para el estudio, se aplicó una investigación mixta, con un diseño no probabilístico y análisis descriptivo correlacional. En tal sentido, para recopilar la información se realizaron encuestas a la muestra conformada por 12 empresas exportadoras de jengibre de la región Junín, a las cuales se aplicó un total de 25 encuestas referidas a las 4 dimensiones determinadas usando para el procesamiento de los resultados en el programa software SPSS. Además, se efectuaron 7 entrevistas a expertos de entidades como PROMPERU, MINCETUR, Sierra y Selva Exportadora y brókers334, analizadas a través del programa Atlas Ti. En el desarrollo estadístico para determinar la relación de las estrategias competitivas con la variable exportación de jengibre de la región Junín hacia Estados Unidos en el periodo 2014 -2018, se empleó el análisis de Rho Spearman, con el cual se obtuvo como resultado que la única estrategia que tiene correlación con la variable de exportación es la de liderazgo en costo, con un valor Rho Spearman de 0.613; siendo una correlación positiva considerable. / The present research work is to identify the relation between the competitive strategies employed by the ginger exporting companies of the Junín region with the process of internationalization towards the United States market in the period 2014-2018, taking as a source of measurement of the leadership strategies in costs, differentiation and approach developed by Porter (1998). For the study, mixed research was applied, with a non-probability design and descriptive correlational analysis. In this sense, to collect the relevant information and data, surveys were carried out on the sample made up of 12 ginger exporting companies in the region Junin, representing 57% of the population, to which a total of 25 surveys were applied, referring to the 4 Dimensions determined using the SPSS software program to process the results. In addition to this, 7 interviews were conducted with experts from entities such as PROMPERU, MINCETUR, Sierra y Selva Exportadora and brokers, analyzed through the Atlas Ti. In the statistical development to determine the relation of competitive strategies on the ginger export variable from the Junín region to the United States, the Rho Spearman analysis was used, with which it was obtained as a result that the only strategy that has a correlation with the export variable is cost leadership, with a Rho Spearman degree of correlation of 0.613; being a considerable positive correlation. / Tesis
