Análise das estratégias empresariais e das ações diplomáticas para inserção externa no período 2001 a 2011 : um estudo comparativo das indústrias moveleiras do Brasil e Alemanha / Analysis of business strategies and foreign diplomatic actions towards internationalization between 2001 and 2011 : a comparative study of the furniture industry in Brazil and Germany

Mury, Luiz Gilberto Monclaro January 2014 (has links)
This thesis aims to comparatively analyze the international competitiveness of Brazilian and German furniture industries between 2001 and 2011 from the internationalization strategies of their companies and the diplomatic role of the respective States in supporting this process. The choice for Germany is due to the relative similarity between the furniture industry of both countries regarding their relative shares in world consumption and production. In relation to international trade, however, Germany presents data much higher than those of Brazil, and has registered growth in exports in the same period in which Brazilian sales abroad showed a strong decline. Considering that, one wonders about the factors that allowed Germany to have such a positive performance, compared to Brazil, in the ten years of research. To investigate business strategies and diplomatic actions taken by Brazil and Germany, an exploratory research with the furniture sector in each country was conducted and, in light of theoretical concepts revisited and best practices identified, public actions and business were proposed to expand Brazilian exports of the sector.

On assessing performance management systems in South African call centres

Strydom, Aletta Sofia Louisa January 2005 (has links)
The research aims to establish a framework whereby performance management systems can be assessed in terms of its effectiveness. The industry in which research is conducted is the call centre industry in South Africa. / The field of Performance Management is receiving more attention today than ever before. This is due to the fact that many companies are becoming more and more frustrated by the ‘disconnect’ that exists between formulating their strategy and successful delivery against it. The aim of this research is to determine how performance is managed in organisations, but more importantly, how it should be managed. To this end, this research considers the total endeavour required to manage performance as a system, and wishes to contribute towards specifying how this system must ‘hang together’. This research is conducted against the backdrop of the call centre industry in South Africa. The call centre industry is an area of potential growth in South Africa and in need of evaluating and improving their performance results to meet or exceed the international benchmarks. This level of global pressure makes call centres an appropriate subject of analysis on a topic such as Performance Management. The nature of this research was mostly exploratory, by firstly reviewing existing theory and literature relevant to this subject. Subsequent to this, two assessment instruments were used to assess the desired situation with regards to Performance Management Systems in South African call centres. The one instrument was developed as a result of the theory and literature reviewed during this research project (the PMSAI). Another, existing, instrument, the PMA®, (De Waal, 2004) was also used to provide a different view and provides an opportunity to triangulate this project. It also addresses the current status of Performance Management Systems in South African call centres to highlight shortcomings as a basis to review and improve these systems. The main findings of this research are that a successful Performance Management System should take cognisance of a number of factors in- and outside of the organisation as well as the interplay between ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ elements in the system. Examples of these factors are the industry and focus of the organisation, as well as what the Performance Management System must be used for. Examples of ‘hard’ vs ‘soft’ elements are responsibilities for performance targets (hard) and the level of buy-in to achieve the targets (‘soft’). In the end, a perfect ‘answer’ to Performance Management is elusive and is likely to remain so mainly due to the inherent complexity and level of variety that this system must cater for.

The impact of food and beverage mergers on the shareholder value with specific reference to South Africa

Myeni, Wiseman Bellingham Wanda January 2007 (has links)
This study is aimed at investigating the effect of mergers and acquisitions on the share prices and dividends involving South African companies in the food and beverage industry. A sample of 79 mergers from 1999 to 2005 was used. The data was analysed using the event study methodology and descriptive statistics. In addition, the paired t-test was also conducted to test the significance of the results. The results were presented using graphs, tables and charts. The results showed that target companies obtained negative abnormal returns during the announcement of mergers while acquiring companies on the other hand received positive abnormal returns. The results imply that it can no longer be generalized that target companies always win and acquiring companies lose during the merger activity. On the other hand, the dividends for target companies increased significantly after the merger, while the dividends for acquiring companies remained insignificantly negative after the merger. / Graduate School of Business Leadership / MBL

Sanches, João Carlos Santiago 15 February 2007 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-08-02T21:42:41Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 JOAO CARLOS SANCHES.pdf: 288041 bytes, checksum: 3c59f0a91370310bbcc60d22ea4c47e8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-02-15 / The aim of the current study was to investigate through a comparative study, a competitive positioning of three Multitask and Tooling Machines in Brazilian market..Initial hypothesis were based on: a) the national tooling machine industries are being penalized with the industrial policies practiced by the federal government, and b) the relative importance attributed to multicriteria elements of the specifications of the national machines, when considered on the growing trends, are not always met by the imported competing machines as a result of aggregated technological values meant to reach plain competitiveness. Thus, we inquire: to what extent are the multitask and tooling machines selected for test are alighned with the chosen criteria and their relative importance appreciated by the two users of the machines. As a methodology the study adopted a multi-case study of two medium industries of the same sector. We used the multicriteria decision method through Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) so as to obtain the most suitable alternative between the national and imported multitasks similar machineries. Results indicate that for the two cases analyzed, it is advantageous to acquire the imported machines, even though it is notorious to mention the national technological advancement. These machines need innovations as they loose competitiveness, not to mention some important criteria such as versatility and productivity. Based on our findings therefore, we conclude that the national tooling and machines suppliers of the multitasks types analyzed in this study are not competitive as compared to the imported ones.

Geiger, Albert January 2011 (has links)
The globalization of the economy has leaded the companies to integrate themselves in different kind of agglomerations. These agglomerations can be defined by two principal aspects: The sequence of relationships between companies organized to distribute the goods on regional or global markets, called productive chain or global value chains, and the geographic concentration of firms in a specific territory, called industrial agglomeration or cluster. On this way, globalization and regionalization can run together because how global is the consumption of a specific good, bigger is the tendency to concentrate complementary companies to produce it. But the geographic production concentration itself is not enough to increase the competitiveness of the agglomerated companies. It is necessary the articulation of collective actions to get direction and coordination to the group of companies in order to increase the competitiveness that are called governance. To contribute with this question, this paper proposes the development of a model of governance analysis and a methodology to promote the competitive insertion of clusters in global value chains. To achieve this goal the research begins with the characterization of industrial agglomerations in terms of products produced or based in a specific territory. In the sequence some aspects related to the governance of industrial agglomerations are acknowledged in order to identify the baseelements that will be used to propose a governance model. With the elements identified is proposed an initial governance analysis model. This model was preliminary applied in three mature industrial clusters that are actually inserted in global value chains. After this preliminary application, it is proposed a final governance model and a step-by-step methodology for their implementation. Finally to evaluate the applicability of the developing model and his methodology, the model is partially applied in an industrial agglomeration. In the end, based on this case study, are presented conclusions and recommendations related to the model, the methodology and the case study developed in this work.

Proposição de um sistema de indicadores de inovação, competitividade e design voltado para empresas desenvolvedoras de produtos / Proposition of an innovation, competitiveness and design indicator system for product development companies

Plentz, Natália Debeluck January 2014 (has links)
Competing in the market nowadays can be considered a great challenge for companies. As well as traditional performance factors such as quality and trustworthiness, innovation is becoming essential in the product differentiation process. Design can be considered a strategic tool in the search of innovation, but it is perceived that its concept is not yet fully comprehended by organizations. In this context, the present research aims to develop an indicator system to assess organizational competitiveness through performance indicators of design management. It is a part of Project ICD – Innovation, Competitiveness and Design – whose goal is to propose guidelines to increase companies’ competitiveness through design and innovation. The research was done in five product developing companies which participate in the project. To achieve the proposed goals, a series of methodological procedures was applied. The first step was to understand what the organizations see as competitiveness through focus groups and questionnaire. Then it was necessary to comprehend the relation between competitiveness, design and innovation, using interviews with experts from the academy. With this understanding, a workshop for indicator construction and selection was elaborated, counting with the participation of the five companies. It was verified that it is possible to evaluate competitiveness with an indicator system based in five categories: customer responsiveness, efficiency, innovation, quality and results.

The research aims at analyzing the competitiveness of organizations with selfadministered health plans by human resources departments, as compared to other commercial health plan operators available in Brazil, from the point of view of the internal resources of the organization. To this end, a Case Study was developed focusing the self-administered health plan by an energy company: the Petróleo Brasileiro SA (PETROBRAS). The theoretical model used was adapted from the original one developed by Ferraz , Kupfer and Haguenauer (1995), in which, the competitiveness of an organization, over the long term, is the result of a dynamic cycle of Strategy, Competences and Performance. The analysis was made by crosschecking multiple data sources obtained from documents and semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that the organization with self-administered health plan by human resources department presents several aspects that hinder its competitiveness position in the long term.
