On the present research, Tuning Systems were studied in order to investigate its application in Creative Processes. For such, we created a distinction of compositional approaches in the music of the 20th Century, and we also studied mechanisms of scale development by mainly adopting Psychoacoustics (i.e. Roughness Model), which enabled the development of a computational tool for the analysis of sounds and Tuning Systems, as well as musical creation. The studies have been applied in Creative Processes with comments and discussions over the research¿s objectives / Mestrado / Mestre em Música

This project aims to discuss the compositional processes used by Moacir Santos (1926-2006) in the conception of his work from the various film scorings that he composed, mostly in the sixties. Santos devoted much of his time composing and producing film scorings, and these productions are his first major impact works launched in Brazil, the following films will be analyzed under those compositional aspects: Seara Vermelha (1964), by Alberto d'Aversa (1920-1969); O Santo Módico (1964), by Sacha Gordine (1910-1968) and Robert Mazoyer (1929-1999); Ganga Zumba (1964) and A Grande Cidade, by Carlos Diegues (1940-); Os Fuzis (1964), by Ruy Guerra (1931-); and O Beijo (1964) by Flávio Tambellini (1925-1976). These scores show an entire aesthetic direction followed by Moacir throughout his career, and the countless themes and melodies "born" at this time and that would appear in most of his instrumental music and songs released after that. Thus, we can understand better the full scope of his compositional work, studying and realizing how the imagetic references assimilated in the films reflected his compositional process / Mestrado / Fundamentos Teoricos / Mestre em Música

This dissertation intends to expose the writing and compositional thought over the percussion repertoire of Iannis Xenakis. It intends to clarify which tools where necessary to the composer so it could be made possible to apply his musical concepts over the percussion repertoire. The presente research was conducted over the analysis of his first work written exclusively for percussion, Persephassa, from 1969. Before approaching such composition, the path that precedes it is exposed under the perspective of the composer previous works and his musical formalizations, thus the focus is directed over the 50's and the 60's. Period in which Xenakis began his research on the application of indeterministic systems and processes applied in music structures, what was called stochastic music. As also his concepts on symbolic music are exposed. Over his career Xenakis proposed new formalizations and approaches over the musical language. Comparing the methods and techniques applied in Persephassa, with the processes developed by the composer during the decades of the 50' and the 60's, ramifications of his previous formalizations are found on the compositional processes developed for composing his percussion music. The research here presented intends to expose the influences of his previous processes developed and formalized during the period that proceeds the composition of Persephassa, over its own composition / Mestrado / Processos Criativos / Mestre em Música

In the first part, some theoretical approaches on metaphor are discussed, notably the conceptions related to peircean semiotics and to some authors of philosophy of language. In this point, the objective is to observe how metaphor can be understood as a semiotic operation of meaning, which can be extended to different semiotic systems, beyond verbal language. In the second part of the research, we intend to observe the implications of metaphoric operation within processes of twentieth century compositional practices. Therefore, some aspects of the creative processes are analyzed; first in the electroacoustic music of Luc Ferrari (1929 - 2005) - mainly those related to the question of reference in acousmatic music; and also in the instrumental music of Tristan Murail - emphasizing the exploration of models in spectral music / Mestrado / Processos Criativos / Mestre em Música

Concluímos, por fim, que Messiaen emprega seu repertório técnico concernente à rítmica de maneira altamente contextual, de modo que decisões composicionais não previstas em seus procedimentos e nem sempre dadas no domínio da rítmica, propriamente, são cruciais para os resultados rítmicos obtidos pelo compositor / Abstract: This dissertation aims at observing, in the singular contexts of different pieces by Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992), the specific employment of his technical repertoire concerning the rhythmical domain and the articulation of such repertoire with other compositional aspects of the pieces studied (e. g. pitch management and formal constitution). Having taken as a base the diversity of materials, procedures and concepts exposed and discussed in Messiaen's theoretical work, analysis of the following of his works are here presented: "Danse de la fureur, pour les sept trompettes" and "Liturgie de cristal" (1941); Neumes rythmiques (1949); "Yamanaka-cadenza" (1962) and La Fauvette des jardins (1970). By the end of this dissertation, we will have verified that Messiaen employs his technical repertoire concerning the rhythmical domain in a highly contextual manner, in such a way that compositional decisions which were unforeseen in his procedures and not always immediately related to the rhythmic domain are crucial to the rhythmical results obtained by the composer / Mestrado / Processos Criativos / Mestre em Música

Participatory musical performance : the mediation of a saxophonist in articulating contemporary electroacoustic music compositions with saxophonesSousa Bittencourt, Pedro 23 October 2015 (has links)
This research is about the collaboration of a saxophonist-researcher with several composers in electro acoustic music with saxophones. Mixed music combines a performer playing acoustic instruments (traditional or not) interacting with digital and electronics means of all sort of operations, time scales and technical configurations, diffused by loudspeakers. We understand participation in our case as human exchanges in musical digital environments, and as the creation of new links that didn’t exist before. Our research proposes a reflection on listening approaches through the XXst century and studying mixed music through the multi scale approach. The saxophonist gives a contribution, that enhance a creative perspective for each musical piece that influence the composers’ work. Which techniques and which musical knowledge can be exchanged and enlarged thanks to this multiple feedback ? The work on first sources, the competence exchanges between musicians during the many steps of their process of collaborative work construct what we call participatory interpretation in new music. In some aspects we get close to the integral and systemic action-research, since we take part in our study objet, and we modify it in a dynamic process. We propose that the analysis of the musical pieces from our collaborations can bring forth an original knowledge about them and enhance musical creativity. Participatory interpretation optimizes the musical results and explore new mixed “composable” spaces. As a demonstration, some pieces are though analyzed under this participatory perspective. Our research leads to a conclusion towards the idea of plasticity in music making.

The Sound-Poetry of the Instability of Reality: Mimesis and the Reality Effect in Music, Literature, and Visual ArtUnderriner, Chaz, 1987- 05 1900 (has links)
This paper uses the concept of mimesis to clarify the debate concerning the representation of reality in music. Specifically, this study defines the audio reality effect and the three main practices of realism as a way of understanding mimetic practices in multiple artistic media, in particular regarding the multimedia works of the "Landscape series." After addressing the historical debates concerning mimesis, this study develops a framework for the understanding of mimesis in sound by addressing the writings of Weiss, Baudrillard, Barthes, Deleuze, and Prendergast and by examining mimetic practices in 19th-century European painting and multimedia performance works. The audio reality effect is proposed as a meaningful translation of Roland Barthes' literary reality effect to the sonic realm. The main trends of realist practice are applied to electroacoustic music and soundscape composition using the works and writings of Emmerson, Truax, Wishart, Risset, Riddell, Smalley, Murray Schafer, Fischman, Young, and Field. Lastly, this study mimetically analyzes "2 seconds / b minor / wave" by Michael Pisaro and Taku Sugimoto and the works of the "Landscape series" in order to demonstrate the relevance of mimesis for understanding current musical practice.

"Deborah": The Creation of a Chamber Oratorio in One ActMixter, Mary 05 1900 (has links)
In comparing oratorio traits across history, three aspects of oratorio were found to be particularly applicable to the creation of "Deborah: A Chamber Oratorio in One Act." These aspects were: the selection of topic and the creation or adaptation of text; the differences between recitative and aria, in form and function; and the level of stylistic diversity within a given work.

161 Glass: Site Specific Music in an Artistic ContextRusnak, Christina S. 05 1900 (has links)
The composition 161 Glass is a 17-minute musical work with percussion, wind and brass instruments in which the intersection of mid-century architecture, and the art and culture of a dynamic city are inextricably linked. Through this paper, I explore the process of composing a musical work in relationship to the significance of site specific context. The paper begins by defining the concept of site specific art works; then reviews the discourse of the intersection of art, music and architecture. I then delve into the cultural and geographic context surrounding this project from the modern era through the present, and how those perspectives apply to the building and my piece. I reveal how the composition relates the musical ideas to the site. Finally, I describe the collaborative process between myself, the musicians and the Dallas Contemporary staff.
