Ressemantizações mitológicas nos quadrinhos: estudo semiótico de Conan, O Bárbaro

For this development the work was divided into three main phases. The first one appoints a comics introductory contextualization and states the research problematic and the study object s clipping; the second one develops the semiotics analysis of the chosen corpus, meaning to describe and analyze in it, through the sense generative path, the mythologies proceedings of trans-creation; the third phase conclusively considers the sense effects of the mythological transversality brought from antiquity to modernity. The research is supported theoretically on A. J. Greimas and collaborators semiotics. On the final phase it takes beyond A. J. Greimas narrative grammar, V. Propp s theoretical referential regarding the marvelous tale. It also summons to the mythological study, beyond own Greimas, M. Eliade. Comic s magazines sign to take a role of broadcasting a modern mythology which is analyzed in The Savage Sword of Conan, which shows plenteous inter-discursive translations of mythological elements, beyond a re-taken of the protagonist s anti-heroism, also dispatching to ancient mythic tales. Initially born as a character of tales of the kind sword and sorcery, of early 1930 decade created by R. E. Howard, Conan is re-launched in 1970 decade as a protagonist of comics magazines, of which were studied the magazine s editions that embrace two Howard s tales adapted to comics. These tales are The Tower of the Elephant and Beyond the Black River, choices that are justified for the respective representation of the beginning and maturity of the character s life as a hero . This clipping also stands out the proposal of a re-creation of a human environment by the anti-heroism and divine by ancient mythologic deities presence. The research conclusions appoint to the creation of a new mythology that approximates the ancient myth to the present addressee s world, to his life and value context, foremost, raising questions regarding nature that adapts to the discursive scene. These sense effects, promoters of myths ressemantization in its temporal crossing work as resultants from human believing need, that in the text is asserted only while a reality s continent / Este trabalho investiga como se dá a tradução de mitologias nas histórias em quadrinhos, como participam expressiva e axiologicamente as mitologias antigas para determinar os processos de recriação empregados na trajetória entre suas formas originais e as suas formas atuais apropriadas. Para esse desenvolvimento, o trabalho foi dividido em três etapas principais. A primeira dessas realiza uma contextualização introdutória da história em quadrinho e situa a problemática da pesquisa e o recorte do objeto de estudo; a segunda desenvolve as análises semióticas do corpus escolhido, objetivando descrever e analisar nele, por meio do percurso gerativo do sentido, os procedimentos de transcriação das mitologias; a terceira parte conclusivamente considera os efeitos de sentido da transversalidade mitológica operada da antiguidade à modernidade. A pesquisa está apoiada teoricamente na semiótica de A. J. Greimas e colaboradores. Na parte final utiliza além da gramática narrativa de Greimas, referenciais teóricos de V. Propp sobre o conto maravilhoso. Convoca também para o estudo das mitologias, além do próprio Greimas, M. Eliade. As histórias em quadrinhos mostram assumir um papel de transmitir uma mitologia moderna que é analisada em A Espada Selvagem de Conan, que apresenta traduções interdiscursivas abundantes de elementos mitológicos, além de uma retomada do antihero ísmo do protagonista que também remete aos contos míticos da Antiguidade. Inicialmente um personagem de contos da natureza sword and sorcery, criado por R. E. Howard no início da década de 1930, Conan é relançado na década de 1970 como protagonista de histórias em quadrinhos, das quais foram estudadas as edições da revista que compreendem dois contos de Howard adaptados para os quadrinhos. Os contos são A Torre do Elefante e A Fronteira do Fim do Mundo, escolhas que se justificam por representarem respectivamente o início e a maturidade da vida do personagem como herói . Também esse recorte destaca a proposta de recriação de um ambiente humano pelo anti-heroísmo e divino com a presença de divindades mitológicas da Antiguidade. As conclusões da pesquisa indicam a criação de uma nova mitologia, que aproxima o mito da Antiguidade do mundo atual do destinatário, de seu contexto de vida e de valores, sobretudo, levantando questões em relação à natureza que ambienta a cena discursiva. Esses efeitos de sentido promotores de uma ressemantização dos mitos na sua travessia temporal funcionam como resultantes da necessidade humana de crença, que no texto é afirmada apenas enquanto continente da realidade

The (re)mystification of London : revelations of contested space, concealed identity and moving menace in late-Victorian Gothic fiction

This project asserts that much of the cultural anxiety found in Gothic-infused late-Victorian fiction derives from literary revelations of the nested spaces, shifting identities, and spontaneous connections inherent to the late-Victorian metropolis. The three literary texts studied here – The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle, Raffles: The Amateur Cracksman by E.W. Hornung, and The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan – all depict London as fundamentally suitable for those who seek to evade the disciplinary gaze and to pursue menacing schemes of criminality and invasion. Doyle’s text illustrates the interconnectedness of the spaces within London as well as the passable threshold between London and the English countryside; both the villain Stapleton and the hero Sherlock Holmes use these connections to attack and defend, respectively, the city and its inhabitants. Hornung’s stories depict the machinations employed by the gentleman-thief Raffles as he alters his identity and his codes of behaviour in order to free himself to pursue criminal ends and thus as he challenges cultural barriers. Buchan’s text, building on the others, explores the dissolution of cultural boundaries and identities incumbent upon the spontaneous connections made between those who attack English culture and those, like Richard Hannay, who defend it. There emerges in these texts a vision of London (and by extension Great Britain) as a swirling vortex of motion, an unknowable labyrinth perpetually threatened by menacing agents from without and within. I have employed Victor Turner’s theories of liminality and communitas to describe how criminal agents, and their equally menacing “good-guy” pursuers, separate themselves from structured society in order to move freely and to gain access to the contested thresholds they seek to infiltrate. ”There is Nothing More Deceptive than an Obvious Fact” : A Feminist Study of the Detective Work by Miss Marple and Sherlock Holmes

This comparative study focuses on the detective genre and is conducted through literary analysis with a feminist critical perspective of two of its most iconic protagonists, Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887 and Agatha Christie in 1930 respectively. The purpose is to attempt to establish the effect of the gender differences on these two protagonists. Both Holmes and Miss Marple are deemed as iconic in the detective genre, but the protagonists do not have similar experiences and are created by authors of different genders. Thus, the focus is to explore how gender differences are represented in the literary texts A Study in Scarlet (1887), “A Scandal in Bohemia” (1891), and The Murder at the Vicarage (1930) when it comes to their work as detectives. By using a feminist critical perspective and with the help of previous research, the differences in three central issues, that is, work methods, attitudes and method of disguise, are established. The most prominent result from the analysis is that Miss Marple has to work independently from the police force and trust another character, Leonard Clement, with what she knows hoping that Clement will use her observations to make the case move forward. By contrast, Holmes is approached by clients and even assists the police force in investigations, while Miss Marple is dismissed because of gender discrimination and ageism when she reaches out to the police force. Miss Marple is clearly a victim of gender discrimination and ageism, while Holmes is seen as eccentric but fully competent as a detective. Holmes is even described as having “extraordinary powers” while Miss Marple is described as an “old pussy” in a derogatory manner. Therefore, the results are that there is a significant difference in attitude where Holmes as a man encounters more positive attitudes and Miss Marple as a woman encounters more negative attitudes, all because of gender discrimination and ageism. These results are of great importance as it reveals what gender differences Holmes and Miss Marple encounter in their literary texts. It opens up the opportunity for more research in gender differences and gender discrimination in comparisons between protagonists. That Miss Marple is successful in the end, however, functions as a feminist statement.

Holmes, Alice, and Ezeulu: Western Rationality in the Context of British Colonialism and Western Modernity

This thesis examines Western rationality, contextualizing that subject in British colonialism and Western modernity. Using Scott Lash's description of academic characterizations of modernity, I explore the “high" modernity of the social sciences represented in the books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. I then explore the cultural studies critique of that characterization of modernity in the book Arrow of God by Chinua Achebe. Using the theory of Jean Francois Lyotard, Martin Heidegger, and Theodor Adorno, I look at Western rationality through its manifestation in British colonialism. I argue that colonialism is a site where rationality's negative legacy is manifest, and that the paradoxical representations of rationality in the books by Carroll and Doyle indicate a problem with the assumption that Western rationality was a universal epistemology. Contrary to the British's own ideas of their rationality, I find that Western rationality is ultimately a culturally-grounded discourse. Using Chinua Achebe's Arrow of God, I examine the intersection between Western rationality and other forms of cultural knowledge, an intersection that occurred through British colonialism. Achebe argues against the universal model of Western rationality and posits instead a relative valuing of each culture's methods of arriving at truth. I use his novel to illustrate the limits of Western rationality and its claim to universality.

Not So Elementary: An Examination of Trends in a Century of Sherlock Holmes Adaptations

This study examines changes over time in 40 different Sherlock Holmes films and 39 television series and movies spanning from 1900 to 2017. Quantitative observations were mixed with a qualitative examination. Perceptions of law enforcement became more positive over time, the types of crime did not vary, and representation of race and gender improved over time with incrementally positive changes in the representation of queer, mentally ill, and physically handicapped individuals. The exact nature of these trends is discussed. Additionally, the trends of different decades are explored and compared. Sherlock Holmes is mostly used as a vehicle for storytelling rather than for the salacious crimes that he solves, making the identification of perceptions of crime in different decades difficult. The reasons for why different Sherlock Holmes projects were created in different eras and for different purposes are discussed.
