Rol van koinonia in kleingroepe in die opbou van die gemeente / The role of koinonia in small groups in the building up of the local churchDu Plessis, Willem Jacobus 06 1900 (has links)

This study deals with the problem statement: "Can the growth or existence of small groups within a congregation influence the level of community experienced within that congregation?" The question is relevant because the church works with everchanging human beings. Since the "revolution" of the seventeenth century, we have been living in a period of "modernism" characterised by the emphasis being placed on rationalism and individualism. Since the Second World War a shift has taken place from a "modernistic" to a "post-modernistic" society. Post-modernistic man, disillusioned by the inability of the modernistic world to ensure peace, has developed a need for
community. Involvement with other people and the need to belong has once again become important. Traditional ministry, based on the principles of modernism, has become inadequate to fulfil the challenges and requirements of post-modernistic man. The purpose of this study is to investigate a ministry practice which will address these
requirements of community - namely a deep and profound relationship of caring between people. The term refers to a strong bond of common destiny which people should experience within a religious community. Traditional practices of ministry upheld the belief that this ideal of community could be attained within religious services. The premise of this study is that such a level of community is not achieved within traditional ministry practices. A new practice, in which small groups feature prominently, would be more conducive to a spirit of community. The study suggests a paradigm shift from the traditional model of"gospel preaching" or "pastoral-herd", to a more physical or charismatic model. The purpose of this study is to guide post-modernistic man towards religious adulthood, which is the ultimate goal of a congregational building program. This is a pastoral process where members of the congregation grow towards adulthood through a fervent experience of community within a small group, functioning as an extended family. The study promotes the "cell-church model" as appropriate ministry practice
to facilitate the congregation's growth towards religious adulthood. Through this approach, community will once more take its rightful place as one of the quintessential features of the church. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / Th. D. (Praktiese Teologie)

Merging Identities: A Glimpse into the World of Albert Wicker, An African American Leader in New Orleans, 1893-1928Smith, Melissa Lee 15 December 2007 (has links)
The life and career of Albert Wicker, Jr. (1869-1928), reflects the growth of the new urban African-American middle class in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the early years of the twentieth century. He spent his career working for advances in education while using memberships in churches, Masonic groups, insurance companies, benevolent societies, and educational leagues to achieve his personal and professional goals. The networks created by him and others along the way illustrate not only complexity of black life in New Orleans but also the growing tendency of differing ethnic groups to work together to achieve common economic, political, social objectives.

The church service as the centre of a missional congregation developing a second church service as a building block for a future social form of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Württemberg, GermanyBeck, Willi, M.Th. 31 January 2008 (has links)
Summary English
The gradual deterioration of congregational life is unveiling an ongoing inculturation crisis.
With its milieu constricting presence, the church is currently not able to enter into the multifaceted
social environments in Germany.
This paper represents a contribution to the discussion concerning our joint search of the
church's future social form in our post-modern society.
Departing from the major significance of the church service as the centre of the congregation,
it is argued that future development of the church can only take place from within the
church service. This is especially true if it is intended as congregational development by the
brothers and sisters, and not as programme or event. The boom of second church services
we have been observing since the beginning of the 1990s could become a missionary-strategic
starting point in order to reach a sociologically diversified population. Plural church service
concepts as a basic approach to church planting become the linchpin of a future, necessarily
multioptional and culturally relevant social form of church.
In a church with manifold church service concepts, the question of Christian unity is being
asked anew and discussed as a plural form of expression. / Christian Spirituality Church History and Missiology / M. Th. (Missiology)

A systematic theological investigation of the marks of the pastor according to contemporary baptist theology in South African and German contextsKlammt, Thomas,1965- 28 February 2006 (has links)
Baptists regard ecclesiology as the field where they provide a unique contribution to Christian theology and practice. Yet, the Baptist Principles that summarize the distinctive beliefs of Baptists have not much to say about the position and role of the Baptist pastor. Instead, they emphasize the equality of all church members and their individual rights to participate and decide in church matters. This thesis investigates the theology of ministry from contemporary Baptist sources in South African and German contexts. The author takes from his own experience of ministry in both countries, but researches literature also from a wider range of backgrounds.
The first part provides a discussion of Baptist ecclesiology with a view to the topic of ministry. The Baptist Principles are scrutinized with specific focus on the Principles of the priesthood of all believers and of congregational church government. They allow for a variety of interpretations, but on the whole limit the position of the pastor rather than positively describing it. The same is true for the German Baptists' creedal document Rechenschaft vom Glauben. The author of this thesis sees his particular contribution to the topic in providing a positive characterization of the Baptist pastor.
He does so in the second part where he presents four pairs of marks of the pastor. "Called and Gifted" describes the divine origin of ministry. Both marks are not exclusive to pastors, but also have a general meaning that includes all church members. "Ordained and Trained" is summarized as a secondary category, which shows the human institutions and prerequisites for ministry. "Leader and Servant" is a seeming contradiction in terms, but has become idiomatic as a combined term to describe the Christian way of leadership, as proclaimed by Jesus. "Preacher and Shepherd" are both synonyms for the pastor. They emphasize different aspects of ministry, but can also be interpreted as contrasting in focus.
In his conclusion, the author relates the marks of the pastor to the Baptist Principles. From there, he formulates challenges for the understanding of pastors in Baptist churches in Germany and in South Africa. / Systematic Theology / D. Th.(Systematic Theology)

Divine authority and covenant community in contemporary cultureBillingham, John January 2014 (has links)
The question I address is: how might a theology of authority be conceived in the light of questions raised by what is termed 'post-modernity'? Is it possible to articulate a theology of authority coming to the church community 'from God' that avoids an oppressive and alienating heteronomy? The thesis explores the question of authority as of vital importance in the sociological dimension of religion, calling for legitimisation (in light of claims made for itself) and as obligatory in the theological sphere. For this reason the project involves two methodologies (theological and sociological/ethnographic). While this investigation is relevant to all sections of the Christian church, particular attention is paid to Baptist churches in the UK, since they hold a concept in their tradition that I suggest is valuable in answering the question of the thesis, namely that of covenant. Within the Christian tradition there is an inner 'problematic' relating the personal authority of Christ to the forms of institution (church) and text (scripture). I explore this with a brief survey of theological authority as found in the fourfold foundation of scripture, tradition, reason and experience. From this is developed a brief theological and Christological reflection on divine authority and covenant theology as found in Karl Barth and his response to the 'inner problematic'. Within contemporary culture I view authority through the lens of so-called 'postmodernism', identifying four challenges to the notion of 'external authority' (all of which exemplify a move from the external to internal, and objective to subjective approaches to authority). This is further explored by means of qualitative research with one-to-one interviews conducted in a Baptist church in York. This data is reflected upon by means of ethnography and 'judicious narratives', especially in dialogue with material from Guest ('congregational study'), Heelas and Woodhead ('subjectivised-self') and Healy ('theodramatic horizon' and 'practical-prophetic ecclesiology'), providing an intersection between the language of theology and sociology. The concept of church as covenant community is explored in Baptist and (more briefly) Anglican traditions, leading to a constructive proposal that both the inner-church 'problematic' and the 'postmodern' challenge to authority might begin to be resolved with the notion of covenant. It is within this context of relationship, human and divine, that the authoritative and revelatory Word of God, the story that is Christ, is found in community and praxis. Here is a 'triangulating' relationship between authority, story and covenant revealing divine authority in a non-coercive way and relevant to contemporary culture.

Text in German, summaries in English and German / This dissertation is a missiological research on reports of first and second generation missionaries from the Hermannsburg mission society in Germany. The missionaries worked for their lifetime among the Batswana. An important point in the first chapter is the attempt to clarify the theological foundation for the understandung of inculturation, from which my conception later arose. The second chapter deals with the founders of the Hermannsburg missionary society and describes the spiritual background of the missionaries. The following three chapters cover the work of the missionaries, in each case father and son at Dinokana, Bethanie and Phokeng chronologically from 1857 - 1940. Special attention is given to their socio-cultural expierences and traditional-religious knowledge. The last chapter evaluates the work of the missionaries and takes into account the present missiological debate on mission. Here again it becomes clear what I mean by Inculturation. / Missiology / D.Th. (Missiology)

Wachsende Kirche : auf der Suche nach Zugangswegen für den Gemeindeaufbau in der evangelischen Landeskirche von Württemberg : ein empirisch-theologischer Diskussionsbeitrag zur Debatte um die Kirche von Morgen / Church growth : in search of possible approaches for the foundation and development of Christian congregations within the "Evangelische Landeskirche von Württemberg" : an empirical-theological contribution to the discussion and debate about the future structure of the churchBeck, Willi, M.Th. 11 1900 (has links)
Gemeindegründungsbewegung in bisher unerreichten soziokulturellen Umgebungen.
Against the background of current reform processes in the Evangelische Landeskirche von
Würrtemberg (protestant national church of Baden-Württemberg as) well as the Evangelische Kirche
von Deutschland (protestant national church of Germany), this paper reflects and comments on the
reformation efforts of the past years and places them into the context of empirical research. The aim of
this survey is to investigate in an explorative manner various forms of pragmatic access to people
hitherto unreached, who could be factored into the church's future social form. The participants were
selected using a multilevel random selection process and 628 standardised interviews were
subsequently carried out.
To begin with, this research focuses on the interviewee's religious stance on christian-occidental
culture and values,on the work of the church in general and on christian faith, then on their personal
experience with services, church and life, their expectations, needs and interests, and lastly the
significance of prayer and the bible as integral parts of a spiritual Christian life.
Based on the service as the centre of a congregation's community life, this survey wants to fathom
the chances of service differentiation and takes a look at alternative forms of service among other
things.
Volunteer work in the church, work in small groups as well as religious education programmes for
adults are of potential importance and need to be taken into consideration as possible access paths to the
future development of the church as well as the value of pastoral care and life coaching in situations of
radical change or the start-up of a national movement to establish new congregations in hitherto
unreached sociocultural environments.
The manifold findings and potential possibilities of our church in the future cannot be separated
from our position with regard to missiology and ecclesiology, which identifies the central development
of congregation and church as the formation of culturally relevant, multioptional congregations, as the
community of brothers and sisters. This survey thus contributes to the current discussion of reform and
the associated decision-making process. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / D. Th. (Missiology)
