Assessing the role of Development Communication in fostering social change: the case study of Sesotho Media and Development (SM&D)

Carciotto, Sergio January 2013 (has links)
Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA(DVS) / A number of programmes have been implemented in the field of development communication, with the specific aim of promoting social change among communities, and a series of studies have illustrated the positive effects of entertainment-education (EE) interventions on individuals’ behavioural change. These programmes can be applied in a variety of fields, including health, agriculture and sustainable development, and make use of a different range of media such as radio, television and theatre. In line with the theory and conceptual framework of the Integrated Model of Communication for Social Change (IMCSC), this research is intended to explore, empirically, how development communication programmes can foster collective action amongst community members. The research is based on a case study of Sesotho Media & Development (SM&D), a nongovernmental organisation that has been operating in Lesotho, using media to promote social transformation and individual change. For the past 10 years, SM&D has been working in Lesotho using a methodology based on facilitated documentary screening with a specific focus on HIV/Aids-related issues, combined with capacity building programmes aimed at training facilitators among support groups, youth groups and prison inmates around the country. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods of enquiry were employed throughout the research. Common research tools used include questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and observation. In addition, a variety of secondary sources of information, including evaluation reports, funding proposals and journal articles were reviewed. The results of the study reveal that development communication initiatives are able to foster collective forms of action by increasing the level of efficacy amongst the audience. Conclusions highlight that participatory development communication with an educational aim allows people to identify problems and to strategise and mobilise resources for collective action.

Black theology and apartheid theology : an investigation into epitheton theology

Le Roux, Zacharias Petrus 06 1900 (has links)
Black theology and apartheid theology are theologies making use of an epitheton. The use to which the epitheton is put in these theologies is of crucial importance, that is, they are couplet theologies being used in a subjective genitive fashion. The question is whether the couplet becomes a theology of/concerning the epitheton or is it used in an objective genitive fashion. When the epitheton is used in the objective genitive sense it of necessity has to generate an epistemological break in order to distinguish it from orthodox theology. This in turn necessitates a conscientisation of a contextually predicated theology The theology becomes reductive. In this way an epitheton theology forming part of a couplet becomes attenuated and diverges from orthodox theology in the construction of its theology. This can lead to the espousal of heretical teachings. Conclusion: The conclusion arrived at is the objective genitive sense, that an epitheton theology, in for the purpose of advancing a particular secular base or pseudo-theological base for Christian society, once it has gained a life of its own, will lead to heresy unless erroneous or sinful teachings are confessed and repented of.

Sène, Moussa 12 1900 (has links)
Each year, several thousand young Quebecers discover International Cooperation, through internships in countries known as "developing." Although the impact of these internships on southern populations are known and regularly assessed, there are few studies following up the youth on their return to Quebec. What impact did this experience have on these people? What were their motivations to start? And how has their commitment toward development issues changed? Did it even continue after their stay overseas? How has the experience shaped their professional projects and their perceptions of the future? This thesis main object is to picture the impact of international cooperation internships on young people when they return home. Our research is based on quantitative and qualitative data collected from alumni of the NGO Mer et Monde. Quantitative data were collected using a survey of 367 alumni, and a group interview provided the basis for the qualitative investigation. The results of the analysis suggest that the experience overseas has definitely a strong influence on the commitment and lifestyle of young people on their return to Quebec. Following the experience abroad, the identity of the respondents is particularly affected over six aspects: their openness to the world, their environmental awareness, their social consciousness, their personal development, their relationships to the "Others" and their representations of the "Elsewhere". It appears that it is as much the lifestyle, as the relationships and the ways of thinking that evolve through the internship. And the specificity of such an experience and the processes at work allow us to assimilate this type of internship with an experience of cosmopolitanism and awareness-raising of young Quebecers.

An appreciative inquiry approach to community theatre on HIV and AIDS education for young people

Maritz, Gerrit Ulrich 01 February 2011 (has links)
This dissertation positions Community Theatre as an agency for development and education based on the educational principles of Freire and Boal’s Theatre for Development. The dissertation argues that Appreciative Inquiry can enrich the practice of Community Theatre by approaching HIV and AIDS education through an asset-based, participatory, inclusive, learner-centred approach. The dissertation further hypothesises that the infusion of the 4-D process of Appreciative Inquiry into Community Theatre processes aimed at HIV and AIDS education will enhance young people’s agency as active participants and agents of change in their communities beyond the didactic notions inherent in ABC education approaches to HIV prevention. This approach can encourage meaningful participation and critical consciousness amongst young people in the HIV prevention response. / Dissertation (MA (Drama))--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Drama / unrestricted

Roussy, Nathanaël 08 1900 (has links)
Influenced by the continuous development of a materialist understanding of the circulation of culture within the socio-technical circuit of video games, this dissertation is dedicated to the notion of ideology as an apparatus of social reproduction and its articulation within this circuit. Inherited from a globally built economic system historically designed to lead to a polarized accumulation of global resources towards imperialist metropolises, video game culture, primarily directed at a Western audience, tends to reinforce the subjectivities necessary to ensure the continuity of this colonial matrix of power. By introducing the formal and activist contributions of the Third Cinema and the Black Panther Party's art, such as cultivating a diagnostic understanding, proximity to the formation of political organization, and awareness of the possibility of alternatives, this dissertation explores the possibilities of fueling new uses of old radicalisms. The dissertation concludes with interventions from the gaming milieu that bear similarities to these engaged arts, either through alternative platforms that enable the emergence of such counter-histories or through actions on representations carried out by creators which delimit segments within which it becomes possible to operate. These critical spaces can then facilitate the process of conscientization.

SpeakUP! Young Women Share Powerful Stories From Their Own Lives

Warren, Jenn January 2016 (has links)
How can a Digital Storytelling workshop help educate, inspire and mobilise young women engaged in a non-profit organisation, in order to assist their peers? This exploratory study investigates whether Digital Storytelling can foster digital literacy, self-awareness and reflection amongst workshop participants, and how young women may be able to support each other and their peers through the act of creating and sharing personal digital stories. Conducted using qualitative and participatory methods, with the theoretical underpinnings of Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory and Social Cognitive Theory, Paulo Freire’s conscientisation and participatory development, this research is conducted in collaboration with female mentors from the sport-based adolescent health organisation, Grassroot Soccer. First, I analyse the women’s interactions and learnings during the Digital Storytelling workshop, where participants create digital stories in a hands-on setting (using the Story Center model). This is done through participant observation and semi-structured interviews with participants following the workshop. Second, I seek to understand how or if young women can re-present themselves in the context of a facilitated Digital Storytelling workshop and challenge gender stereotypes through their own digital stories. This data is collected through a pre-workshop questionnaire, participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of the digital stories. While this is an exploratory study, I anticipate results in the following areas: (1) cross-pollination of knowledge between workshop participants and facilitators; (2) self-awareness, self-confidence and reflection amongst young women; (3) increase in digital literacy, storytelling and audio/visual skills; and (4) increase in understanding of, or introduction to, digital media and communication, activism and social change.

Mwambazambi, Kalemba 30 June 2005 (has links)
The mission of the Gareganze's Brothers in Christ Church facing the chaos of the socio-political situation in DRC resulting mostly from the question of the Congolese nationality is to dynamise the christian mission and to protect the poor, set free the captives, because God is always at their side. The DRC, though, has enormous natural resources and the competent human resources capabilities. The national institutions seem to be unable to handle this situation because of the lack of political culture, mismanagement and moral untidiness. The successive Congolese crises mostly are the same, the common denominator resides in the causes that brought them about. The main objectives of the antagonist groups are political leadership and material wealth. The findings of our analysis will help the Church of Christ in Congo, to fulfill the prophetic mission and the vision of God, for the positive transformation of the Congolese society. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.
