Wrubleski, Eduardo Guilherme Mötke January 2015 (has links)
This work applies a methodology to include dissipative effects in hyperelastic constitutive relations. The paper focuses on the Mullins effect and hysteresis. However, the methodology can also be applied to other phenomena, like damage. Basically, it is a phenomenological inclusion of the softening behavior in a hyperelastic constitutive model using pseudo-elasticity, in which different energy potentials can be used in different steps of the loading. Two hyperelastic models were employed: Ogden’s and Hoss-Marczak’s models. Four different materials were modeled, three of them subjected to uniaxial tension only, and a fourth subjected to the three classical loadings, namely, uniaxial tension, equibiaxial tension and pure shear. Two softening parameters from the literature were implemented and new softening parameters were proposed. Graphical inspection and R2 correlation coefficient were used to compare the softening parameters. The materials were considered isotropic and incompressible, being subjected to quasi-static loading. Some of the proposed parameters did not captured the dissipative effect, other overestimate the softening, and those from the literature were able to capture the effects. Finally, very satisfying results were obtained with one the proposed softening parameters, which was a generalization of the one proposed by Dorfmann e Ogden, 2003.

Adaptação de um edômetro com controle de sucção para a determinação da curva característica de solos contaminados por óleo diesel / Adaptation of an edometer with suction control for the determination of the retention curve of soil contaminated by diesel oil

Taytelbaum, Leandro Bergmann January 2008 (has links)
The presence of organic compounds in the soil provides the development of an additional phase in the pore space, immiscible with the preexisting water and gaseous phases. This characteristic of immiscibility of such substances, called nonaqueos phase liquids – NAPL’s, turns the evaluation of a soil contaminated by these substances sufficiently complex. Among the substances pertaining to this group, called NAPL, the petroleum products are distinguished. The most important properties in the evaluation of a soil contaminated by NAPL are their constitutive relationships. One of these properties relates the pressure of the fluids with their respective saturations, while the other one relates the relative permeability of the fluids with the saturation of each one of these fluids. From the pressure-saturation constitutive relationship of a contaminated soil, it is possible to quantify indirectly the relative permeability-saturation relationship. However, the evaluation of the pressure-saturation relationship for a soil contaminated by NAPL is sufficiently complex and is in development, demanding considerable care in its determination. For this, it is assumed that, in the interior of a pore contaning water, oil and air, the organic liquid will be preferentially located between the water and air. That is imperative when assuming that water saturation of Sw is a function of the suction developed between the oil-water interface and the total liquid saturation St (sum of water saturation and oil saturation) is dependent of the suction generated between the airoil interfaces. This hypothesis makes possible the evaluation of the pressure-saturation relationship for the three-phase system air-NAPL-water from the two-phase systems NAPLwater and air-oil. Thus, the objective of this work is to develop, from the edometer with pressure control, another equipment, called the multiphase cell, that allows the independent control of the air, NAPL and water pressures. Specifically, this equipment will allow the determination of the pressure-saturation relationship for bi- and three-phase systems. To reach this goal, it was necessary to transform a standard ceramic porous stone in a hidrophobic porous stone (repellent to water), through a chemical treatment of the standard porous stone in a solution containing a substance commercially known as Glassclad 18. This new equipment allows the control of the volume changes of water and oil within a soil sample for different suction. Preliminary tests have been carried out with a mixture composed by 70% of sand and 30% of silt; the first material were collected in the state of the Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) and the second in the state of Santa Catarina. Both materials have their physical properties well known.

Atomistic to Continuum Multiscale and Multiphysics Simulation of NiTi Shape Memory Alloy

Gur, Sourav, Gur, Sourav January 2017 (has links)
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are materials that show reversible, thermo-elastic, diffusionless, displacive (solid to solid) phase transformation, due to the application of temperature and/ or stress (/strain). Among different SMAs, NiTi is a popular one. NiTi shows reversible phase transformation, the shape memory effect (SME), where irreversible deformations are recovered upon heating, and superelasticity (SE), where large strains imposed at high enough temperatures are fully recovered. Phase transformation process in NiTi SMA is a very complex process that involves the competition between developed internal strain and phonon dispersion instability. In NiTi SMA, phase transformation occurs over a wide range of temperature and/ or stress (strain) which involves, evolution of different crystalline phases (cubic austenite i.e. B2, different monoclinic variant of martensite i.e. B19', and orthorhombic B19 or BCO structures). Further, it is observed from experimental and computational studies that the evolution kinetics and growth rate of different phases in NiTi SMA vary significantly over a wide spectrum of spatio-temporal scales, especially with length scales. At nano-meter length scale, phase transformation temperatures, critical transformation stress (or strain) and phase fraction evolution change significantly with sample or simulation cell size and grain size. Even, below a critical length scale, the phase transformation process stops. All these aspects make NiTi SMA very interesting to the science and engineering research community and in this context, the present focuses on the following aspects. At first this study address the stability, evolution and growth kinetics of different phases (B2 and variants of B19'), at different length scales, starting from the atomic level and ending at the continuum macroscopic level. The effects of simulation cell size, grain size, and presence of free surface and grain boundary on the phase transformation process (transformation temperature, phase fraction evolution kinetics due to temperature) are also demonstrated herein. Next, to couple and transfer the statistical information of length scale dependent phase transformation process, multiscale/ multiphysics methods are used. Here, the computational difficulty from the fact that the representative governing equations (i.e. different sub-methods such as molecular dynamics simulations, phase field simulations and continuum level constitutive/ material models) are only valid or can be implemented over a range of spatiotemporal scales. Therefore, in the present study, a wavelet based multiscale coupling method is used, where simulation results (phase fraction evolution kinetics) from different sub-methods are linked via concurrent multiscale coupling fashion. Finally, these multiscale/ multiphysics simulation results are used to develop/ modify the macro/ continuum scale thermo-mechanical constitutive relations for NiTi SMA. Finally, the improved material model is used to model new devices, such as thermal diodes and smart dampers.

[en] PERFORMANCE OF A NEW CONSTITUTIVE EQUATION FOR NON NEWTONIAN LIQUIDS / [pt] DESEMPENHO DE UMA NOVA EQUAÇÃO CONSTITUTIVA PARA LÍQUIDOS NÃO NEWTONIANOS

RONEY LEON THOMPSON 13 January 2012 (has links)
[en] Non-Newtonian materials exhibit different behavior if submitted to shear or extension. A constitutive equation in wich the stress is a function not only of the rate of deformation, but also of the type of the flow is proposed and analyzed theorecticaly. It combines information obtained in shear, extension and rigid body motion in all regions of a complex flow. This equation is tested with numerical codes for two different axissymmetrical geometries, namely, the 4:1 abrupt contraction and the R(2)z=C convergent channel. Both geometries have been employed to measure the extensional viscosity. In order to validate the model, a test section was buit with a 4:1 contraction. Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids were tested using the Particle Image Velocimetry technique to determine the velocity field.

Analytical and numerical modelling of artificially structured soils / Loi de comportement et modélisation numérique des sols artificiellement structurés

Robin, Victor 11 December 2014 (has links)
Une validation rigoureuse a confirmé l'implémentation correcte de la méthode et son potentiel pour l’optimisation du dimensionnement des ouvrages / The effects of lime treatment on the mechanical properties of soils are usually not accounted for in the design of geotechnical structures. As a result the potential of lime treatment has not been fully exploited. In this thesis, a comprehensive experimental program has been carried out to identity the key features of the mechanical behaviour of structured materials. The chemical modifications arising from lime treatment were quantified using thermal analysis methods. From these results a non-linear chemo-mechanical coupling was established between the concentration of cementitious compounds and the yield stress. Using these results, a new formulation to model the degradation of the structure at yield has been developed and implemented in a constitutive model for structured materials. This new model, developed in the framework of the Modified Cam Clay model, requires a limited number of additional parameters that all have a physical meaning and can all be determined from a single isotropic compression test. The model has proven to be successful in reproducing the key features of structured materials and for the modelling of the mechanical behaviour of lime treated specimens under various stress paths. Due to similarities in behaviour, it is shown that the formulation is also suitable for naturally structured soils. To account for a structured material in the design of geotechnical structures, a fully functional finite element program for elasto-plastic problems was developed including the pre- and post-processing of the results. A thorough validation has confirmed the good implementation of the finite element method and its suitability for the modelling of complex geometries involving structured materials

Méthode de prévision des tassements provoqués par le creusement des tunnels urbains et influence des présoutènements / Method for predicting settlements due to urban tunnelling with presupport influence

Gilleron, Nicolas 27 September 2016 (has links)
In a context of increasing demand for underground works in urban areas worldwide, the engineers must have efficient tools and methods to design safe structures, with assessed and managed risks. The prediction of settlements due to urban tunnelling is mainly made with empirical methods. In this dissertation, we propose a method of settlements prediction for tunnels built using conventional methods (i.e. without TBM), with reinforcements. This method is based on three dimensional finite element models with CESAR-LCPC. In the first place, we present the specificities of urban tunnels, and the limitations of numerical and empirical methods. Then, we introduce a constitutive model for the soil which combines a non-linear elasticity and a cross-anisotropic behaviour. This model reproduces the shape, and especially the width, of the reference empirical settlement troughs and permits easy sensitivity analysis. The design of reinforcements, fibreglass bolts and umbrella arches, is then described for the purpose of reducing the settlements. The last section is a case study of risk analysis design for a tunnel typical for the context of the Grand Paris Express project

Hot tearing and constitutive behaviour of semi-solid aluminum alloys

Phillion, André 05 1900 (has links)
The occurrence of hot tearing during solidification is one of the major factors influencing both the quality and productivity of aluminum castings. In order to reduce the formation of hot tears, quantitative information regarding both hot tearing formation and semi-solid deformation is essential. In this study, the mechanisms of hot tearing and semi-solid deformation have been investigated via two novel techniques: x-ray micro-tomography on material deformed in the semi-solid region, and development of a three phase microstructural model based on a geometry derived from a Voronoi diagram with rounded corners and porosity. Numerical techniques were utilized to quantify both the size evolution and orientation of internal damage relative to void growth. In order to conduct the above research, a new semi-solid tensile deformation methodology was devised which uses a two thermocouple control technique to enable accurate measurement of semi-solid tensile strength and ductility. The experimental work was conducted on the aluminum – magnesium alloy AA5182 in the as-cast and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) states. The x-ray micro-tomography technique was used to observe that semi-solid deformation is accommodated by internal damage via growth of as-cast porosity and the nucleation of new damage-based voids. As the volume fraction of damage increases, the growth of voids occurs in an orientation perpendicular to the loading direction, both through expansion within the grain boundary liquid and via coalescence between voids. The damage then localizes, causing failure. The finite element semi-solid microstructural model was used to explore the effects of fraction solid, fraction porosity, and grain size on semi-solid constitutive behaviour. The simulations revealed that increased grain size and fraction porosity lead to a reduction in flow stress for a given fraction solid. Furthermore, local strain accumulation was linked to hot tearing, since strain localizes in the liquid very early in the deformation process. Based on the model predictions, a new constitutive relationship was developed over the range 0.75 < fs < 0.95. Together, these two techniques have provided powerful new insight, such as the critical role played by as-cast porosity, on the phenomena of hot tearing and semi-solid deformation in aluminum alloys. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Materials Engineering, Department of / Graduate

Unruly Extimacy: The Problem of Nature in Hegel's Final System

Furlotte, Wesley Joseph January 2014 (has links)
Concentrating on G.W.F. Hegel’s controversial Naturphilosophie (1830), Part I ventures the following thesis: Hegelian nature is characterized by a “constitutive lack.” Insofar as the natural register lacks the precision and necessity immanent within the dialectical developments of conceptual thought it is capable of radical novelty—the unexpected. This is important: it offers a sense of how the natural register is open to thought and yet, simultaneously, a source of that which has the perpetual possibility of undermining conceptual distinctions and anticipations. The remainder of the project systematically maps what such a conception of nature must mean in terms of Hegel’s concept of spirit (Geist). Consequently, Part II analyzes Hegel’s bizarre account of psychopathology. The central thesis in this context claims that what Hegel’s speculative analysis of ‘madness’ shows us are the ways in which subjectivity might be dominated by its material-instinctual dimension as it unfolds within the unconscious depths of concrete subjectivity. Subjectivity retains the perpetual possibility of regression insofar as it reverts to being materially (maternally) determined strictly by way of externality. Questioning the presupposition of nature’s complete sublation, Part III focuses on Hegel’s political writings. Hegel’s analysis of criminality and punishment allows for the possibility of what we will call “surplus repressive punishment.” A surplus repressive punishment, a brute form of natural external pressure, would constitute spirit’s, i.e. freedom’s, “regressive de-actualization” at both the individual (subjective) and intersubjective (objective, communal) levels. Therefore, surplus repressive punishment, as an expression of spirit’s naturality, serves to undermine spirit’s objective actualization in its entirety. The problem of nature remains very much an active dimension of spirit’s concrete actualization at the socio-political level. The project offers a precise indication of how Hegel’s philosophy of spirit, i.e. his philosophy of freedom, is one intertwined with the problem instantiated by the matrices of nature. Sensitivity to this problem, that there is a problem here, and that Hegel’s system can be pursued to address it is one of the not always recognized merits of his thought. Simultaneously, Hegel’s system becomes surprisingly relevant for our contemporary world insofar as nature remains a problem for our living present.
