Eating Disorder Onset in Young Girls: A Longitudinal Trajectory AnalysisPearson, Carolyn M 01 January 2014 (has links)
To investigate whether there are different patterns of development for binge eating and purging behavior among pre-adolescent and early adolescent girls, I conducted trajectory analyses of those behaviors in 938 girls across eight waves of data from the spring of 5th grade (the last year of elementary school) through the spring of 9th grade (the first year of high school). Analyses revealed four separate developmental trajectories for binge eating behavior (labeled none, increasing, decreasing, and high steady) and three separate developmental trajectories for purging behavior (labeled none, dabble, and increasing). Fifth grade scores on risk factors that were both personality-based (negative affect and negative urgency) and learning-based (expectancies for reinforcement from eating and from thinness) differentiated among the trajectory groups, in some cases before the groups differed in the target behaviors. These findings are the first, to my knowledge, to examine developmental trajectories for eating disorder onset in youth as young as elementary school. Clinical implications are discussed.

An Analysis of Personality in Light of Socioeconomic MobilityMiles, Anne 01 January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to provide insight into the personality traits that are associated with socioeconomic mobility, specifically pertaining to individuals from working class backgrounds. Socioeconomic mobility is an important issue to examine due to the persistence of intergenerational poverty and the difficulty with which to resolve it. Extensive research explicitly shows the dilemma of intergenerational transmission of poverty exists and continues to persist regardless of revised policies. Many aspects each individual experiences have been proven to affect economic attainment, such as race, family background, parental efficacy, social discrimination, area of residency, welfare, education, and intelligence. Although these are recognized in this paper, they are, for the most part, ignored as determinants, as the focus is on the personality traits defining the upwardly mobile, and similar characteristics exist, even while disregarding the above ignored qualities. Mainly social identity theory and identity theory, but also motivational theory, personal efficacy theories, and other related theories, have determined social participation, perception of social class and poverty, control of emotions, impulse control, personal efficacy, social identity, motivation, victimization and dependence or the lack thereof, are all major determinants of mobility.

Hardship : Leadership in Hardship contextsPebelier, Sébastien January 2014 (has links)
When difficulties appear concerning the environment and the social relationships in teams, leading others become very interesting as well as challenging. I am sharing in this research an understanding of the concept of hardship in order to point out a main leadership issue, which is to lead others in extreme situations. It is a new and innovative approach of leadership within the business area based on the literature and completed by sailors’ experiences of hardship.Offshore sailors have the use to handle hardship situations alone as well as in crews, and they cannot avoid it when they are far away from the coasts. Thus when a problem occurs they must fix it themselves. During offshore races and expeditions, sailors have to deal with teams issues and cannot quit for going back home. Thereby, a boat, which is going to sail for few months without stop, is a real laboratory of leadership and social relationships. The starting point of this approach concerns the art of leading oneself, which represents a prerogative for a great leadership in extreme conditions. Indeed when a leader loses his or her self-control in extremes situations, he or she will probably not be able to lead others. Thus, in order to illustrate the literature approach to this concept, this thesis has been completed with an auto-ethnographical approach. I as a sailor have experimented hardship alone on my boat during some offshore sailing trips. I present an analysis of these experiences to explain the issues of leading oneself in such conditions. Thanks to the participation of some sailors experts in hardship, I illustrate the possibility to lead others in hardship context with the inspiration of their experiences. It is possible to lead others in very extremes conditions, and offshore sailors that I called hardship experts could represent a real inspiration to leaders, for a real and great leadership.

The formation and transformation of identity in the novel and film of Great expectations by Charles Dickens / N. BenekeBeneke, Nanette January 2008 (has links)
The research done in this study was motivated by the notion that individuals (or
societies) create their own reality through the specific space they occupy at a certain
moment in time. This concept of reality implies an "interspace" between (con)texts that
could be described as a hybrid (a term that is used to describe the mixing or
intermingling of different aspects or liminal space between various (con)texts. As the
notion of identity is closely related to the interaction of the individual with a specific
context, the main aim of the research was to promote hybridity as a form of identity by
exploring the relationship or dialogue between literature (novel) and film as texts.
For this purpose, a comparison was made between the formation of identity in the novel
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and its twentieth century counterpart in film
produced by Twentieth Century Fox (directed by Alfonso Cuaron and adapted by Mitch
Glazer). The main difference between the two texts, the different periods in which the
works were produced, constituted an important point of departure for this study. It also
revealed that the main character of the respective texts, Pip/Finn, possesses a type of
"core personality" of a sense of values that refuses to be repressed, despite the
character's interaction with context as reflected in the interplay between the similarities
and differences between the texts.
The methodological approach was based on the Brockmeier model which suggested an
imbrication of theories such as narratology, semiotics and intertextuality that could all
contribute, in some way, towards the formation of "textual" identity. The analysis ,first
identified three (con)textual aspects/constants in the formation of identity, namely
ideological influences, strategies of writing and social reality, in the novel Great
Expectations, and then proceeded to illustrate the transformation of these contextual
markers in the twentieth century film version. 'The comparison indicated an expansion of
the narrator's/protagonist's historic consciousness in the film that correlated with the
cultural dominants of the specific time: the film's realist mode as opposed to the
postmodernist expansion or fusion of boundaries. The two texts were perceived to be
engaged in a dialogue with no conclusive interpretation, an aspect familiar to the
postmodernist approach. / Thesis (Ph.D. (English))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2008.

Testing a Multi-Level Mediation Model of Workgroup Incivility: The Role of Civility Climate and Group Norms for CivilityJohnston-Fisher, Jessica 01 May 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to test a multi-level mediation model of incivility. Specifically, it was proposed that predictors of workplace incivility at the individual, group, and organizational level would be related to each other and negative individual outcomes. It was also proposed that the relationship between these predictors and outcomes would be mediated by workplace incivility victimization. Two hundred twenty eight participants completed an online survey through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. Results indicated that variables at all three levels (i.e., civility climate, group norms for civility, and individual characteristics) were related to one another and predictive of negative individual outcomes. Results also indicated preliminary support for the mediating role of workplace incivility experiences in these relationships and the overall model. Workplace incivility significantly moderated all of the relationships between predictor and criterion variables. Implications and limitations of these findings are discussed, and several directions for future research on workplace incivility are explored.

Feminist Stereotypes: Communal vs. AgenticLindburg, Emily R 01 January 2014 (has links)
This study examined relationships between facial appearance, gender-linked traits, and feminist stereotypes. Naïve college students rated traits based on facial appearance of female CEO's whose companies appeared in the Forbes 1000 list. The photos of each female CEO (n=35) were randomly combined with two descriptive identifiers; an occupation (n=9) and an interest area (n=9), including 'feminist'. Participants then rated the head shots of the CEO's on a 7 point Likert scale of communal (expected feminine) traits like attractiveness, warmth, compassion and cooperativeness, and on agentic (expected masculine) traits like ambition, leadership ability and intelligence. If college students hold negative stereotypes of feminists, feminist identified women are expected to be rated lower on levels of attractiveness, warmth, compassion and cooperativeness, but higher in leadership ability, ambition, and intelligence. Results demonstrated that participants did not hold negative stereotypes of feminists as they rated them similarly to environmentalists, progressives, and liberals. Results demonstrated that participants held negative stereotypes about conservatives and republicans.

Who Will Be the First to Buy Autonomous Vehicles? An Application of Everett Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovations TheoryUmberger, Reilly Jackson 01 January 2016 (has links)
Autonomous, otherwise known as self-driving, vehicles represent the future of transportation. Vehicles that drive themselves offer far reaching benefits from increased leisure and productivity for individuals to significant improvements in congestion and infrastructure for governments. The autonomous car will radically change the way we look at transportation, and they are right around the corner. However, the question remains: are we ready? Are we, as a society, ready to hand over the steering the wheel and trust autonomous vehicles with our safety? This paper predicts how the autonomous car will spread through society by analyzing and applying the product qualities and consumer types described in Everett Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovations Theory. Corporations, specifically Uber and Amazon, as opposed to individual consumers, will be the first to adapt, purchase and implement autonomous vehicles. Contrary to popular belief, these vehicles will not be successfully introduced as privately owned vehicles, and therefore, must be marketed towards corporations and organizations.

L'hermès à portrait dans l'Occident romain : fonctions, contextes et significations / Portrait Herm in the Roman West : its functions, contexts and meaningsAndrès, Sarah 01 December 2018 (has links)
This study aspires to acheive a catalog of portrait herms in the Roman West in order to apprehend the semantic meaning of this original figurative support. Erected since achairc times by the crossroads and doors of greek cities, herms become, under roman influence, pedestals for portraits and not only representations of divinity. Those portraits can be divided into two iconographical categories : retrospective ones reproducing features of historical figures such as Homer and Menander, and those of private citizens, sometimes dedicated to their Genius and raised in the atrium of their house. More than a simple stylistical and iconographical analysis of this corpus, this study tries to give an historical and cultural reading of thoses sculptures, from the workshop to their exhibition contexts. This approach must allow the depiction of all the actors involved in thoses dedications, the clarification of thematic choices as of the reasons for choosing these abbreviated images, the definition of their place in the private space of the Roman villas in the context of domestic cults or that of the otium.

A health care that aims integrality in its actions and proposals must take into account the population’s singular life contexts as well as the life contexts of each specific individual, which can be observed in a specialized bibliography. It is well known that Brazil is a country that presents serious social inequality and the knowledge of cultural diversity among different social groups that co-exist in our country is fundamental to achieve an integral health care. The objective of this study is to understand if and in which ways the elements that are considered important to provide health in this context are present in scientific production in the psychology field. For this purpose, several texts present in the BVS (Virtual Health Library) were analyzed; in a total of 37 texts, which deal with the relationship between psychology and SUS (Brazilian Unified Health System). The importance of a contextualized practice was mentioned, however, none of the texts showed the description of specific contexts of families in poverty, indicating that this knowledge is not available in the psychology field and therefore showing the importance of considering the information available in other areas for an integral health care. Integral health care, team work, prevention and health promotion are major elements that are present in the academic production of knowledge; nevertheless we notice that these guidelines are still in the level of reflection and verbalizations, usually not taking place in practice. The challenges that set apart professional psychologist’s practice and SUS guidelines can be summarized in a professional training which emphasizes individual clinical practices resulting in decontextualized practices. Other challenges indentified were the way the health system itself was organized, and the way psychologists are not considered as generalist professionals in health policies. The concept of resilience in general is not present in the studies; however, the presence of other important elements to promote the autonomy of individuals was taken into consideration. Strategies of education: Academic and Permanent Education in Health (EPS) were also analyzed. It was observed that the discussion about professional training is present in most texts and that small changes have been made in order to bring the psychology field closer to the SUS system. Permanent Education in Health is not a significant factor in the studies, and its potential has not yet been explored in relation to psychology.

Previous issue date: 2007-08-20 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This dissertation aims to show the presence of post-modern elements in drama that have been produced in Santa Catarina State (Brazil) since the 1990s, throughout the analysis of four authors drama production at a steady pace in the State: André Silveira, Carlos Silva, Fábio Brüggemann and Rogério Christofoletti. Thus, we initially set series of definitions related to post-modernity and post-modernism by using the
concepts from some of the most important names in this area like Frederic Jamenson, Kristian Kumar, Steven Coonor, David Harvey and Linda Hucheton. From those concepts and definitions, we set a contemporary drama panel focusing on post-modern elements along with a conceptual analysis from current and also main post-modern drama procedures that are also used in drama works produced in Santa Catarina.
From this point, we show a brief view from the catarinense drama during the last decade to insert later dramatists works analyses that are focused on this study. It is possible to infer, after verifying several definitions related to this study, that postmodernity is not characterized as one located movement but as a non-restrictive dissemination of one state or an intellectual production stage that will be able to live
and mix with different cultures, communication means and expression modes by proposing a two- way road between peripheral and non-peripheral artistic productions.
This allows, without any guarantees, to a reciprocal knowledge that may overcome quality assessments based on proximity or distance from the big centers / Esta dissertação pretende demonstrar a presença de elementos pós-modernos na dramaturgia produzida em Santa Catarina, a partir da década de 1990, através da análise da obra dramatúrgica de quatro autores com produção constante no estado: André Silveira, Carlos Silva, Fábio Brüggemann e Rogério Christofoletti.
