Legitimacy-seeking organizational strategies in controversial industries: a case study analysis and a bidimensional model

Reast, Jon, Maon, F., Lindgreen, A., Vanhamme, J. January 2012 (has links)
No / Controversial industry sectors, such as alcohol, gambling, and tobacco, though long-established, suffer organizational legitimacy problems. The authors consider various strategies used to seek organizational legitimacy in the U.K. casino gambling market. The findings are based on a detailed, multistakeholder case study pertaining to a failed bid for a regional supercasino. They suggest four generic strategies for seeking organizational legitimacy in this highly complex context: construing, earning, bargaining, and capturing, as well as pathways that combine these strategies. The case analysis and proposed bidimensional model of generic legitimacy-seeking strategies contribute to limited literature on organizational legitimacy in controversial industry sectors. In addition, beyond organizations active in controversial contexts, this study and its implications are useful for individuals and organizations supporting or opposing the organizational legitimacy of organizations in controversial industries.

Kontroversiella frågor inom de samhällsorienterande ämnena : Möjligheter respektive utmaningar med undervisning av kontroversiella frågor i samhällsorienterade ämnen

Al-Jammali, Kawther January 2024 (has links)
This study is about teachers in socially oriented subjects and their attitudes and experiences regarding working with controversial issues in teaching. Previous research has shown that there are shortcomings and major challenges in handling controversial subjects in the classroom. Therefore, I chose to investigate this by interviewing eight subject teachers in socially oriented subjects. The purpose of the study was to examine different teachers' work with controversial issues and their experiences of opportunities and challenges respectively in teaching controversial subjects. After conducting a qualitative interview study with eight teachers, the results were consistent with previous research. The results of the study indicate a lack of time and challenges associated with working on controversial issues, as they are difficult to handle and can lead to conflicts and disruptions in the classroom. Consequently, some teachers choose not to teach about controversial issues. However, on the other hand, the results of the study show that there were teachers who encouraged working with controversial issues as they considered it important to socialize students into society by addressing controversial topics. They believed that by doing so, students develop into democratic citizens with political tolerance. Another interesting finding from the interview study is that certain schools as a whole choose not to work with controversial issues to avoid negative consequences. This is interesting because other schools in the study, for example, those with UN profiles, focus on challenging students with controversial issues to develop them into democratic citizens of society. One can therefore conclude that working with controversial issues is a task that must involve the entire school, not just the teacher, as it requires efforts from management, colleagues, teachers, and students. Thus, in schools where only the teacher is responsible for addressing controversial issues without support from management or colleagues, it may lead to a reduction in teaching on controversial subjects.

undantag, framgång och folkhälsa: konsten att legitimera en kontroversiell produkt : En kritisk granskning av Swedish Matchs CSR-kommunikation

Larsson, Emma, Rahm, Tilda January 2024 (has links)
In recent decades, there have been significant changes in the Swedish population's tobacco habits, with a noticeable trend being the increased use of snus (moist powder tobacco). At the same time, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a prominent phenomenon, with organizations increasingly implementing CSR initiatives. This study investigates how Swedish Match utilizes CSR to enhance its legitimacy on its website, using a critical discourse analysis based on Fairclough's three-dimensional model. The study uses a theoretical framework based on van Leeuwen's legitimation theory and two CSR models, including the triple bottom line and Carroll's pyramid. Additionally, it draws upon Fairclough's central concept of discourse. The analysis shows that Swedish Match strategically employs CSR communication on its website to enhance its legitimacy. The results indicate a paradoxical CSR communication, where economic interests are implicitly expressed in the shadow of perceived heroic efforts. A consistent intertextuality demonstrates how Swedish Match borrows legitimacy from other established organizations without reference, leaving no room for readers to question or fact-check the communicated information. As the snus landscape continues to evolve due to changes in politics, increased usage, marketing strategies, and scientific advancements, there is a growing need to examine how these controversial brands utilize language to legitimize their sales. Consequently, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how controversial industries can enhance their legitimacy through CSR communication.

Sweet and savage: the world through the mondo film lens

Goodall, Mark 02 1900 (has links)
No / Being the first ever English-language title devoted exclusively to the controversial and influential mondo documentary film cycle, this revised edition of Sweet and Savage remains the only serious study of mondo as a global film phenomenon, and includes a detailed examination of the key films of this cult genre. Sweet and Savage identifies the principle stylistic aspects of the mondo genre through a fascinating ‘non-linear’ approach that echoes the collage shock effects of the original films. In so doing it features exclusive interviews and many unique material contributions. It is lavishly illustrated with rare photographs, stills, posters, and record sleeves.

Sweet and savage: the world through the shockumentary film lens

Goodall, Mark January 2005 (has links)
No / The first ever English-language title devoted exclusively to the shocking, controversial and influential mondo documentary film cycle. "The Mondo Cane films were an important key to what was going on in the media landscape of the 1960s especially post the JFK assassination." J.G BALLARD Mondo Cane in 1962 was the blueprint for a shocking, controversial and influential documentary film cycle. Known collectively as 'mondo films' - or 'shockumentaries'" -this enduring series of films is a precursor of the Reality-TV show. A box-office draw for three decades and now a staple of the video rental market, these explosive 'exposés' would often pass fabricated scenes as fact in order to gave the public a sensationalist, highly emotive view of the world. SWEET & SAVAGE is the first ever English-language book devoted exclusively to the Mondo documentary film. A study of Mondo as a global film phenomenon, it includes a detailed examination of the key films and includes exclusive interviews with the 'godfathers' of this cult genre. Includes an exclusive interview with author J.G. Ballard.

En het potatis : En kvalitativ fallstudie om journalistikens gestaltning av mediedebatten kring fallet Mr Cool / A hot potato : A qualitative case study on the journalistic representation of the debate about Mr Cool

Ådemo, Julia, Blixt, Moa January 2019 (has links)
This paper aims to examine the different portrayals in Swedish journalism about a case with a controversial topic. The analyzed case in this study focuses on the provocative rapper Mr Cool and his song about sexual intercourse with a child and the following mediated debate about freedom of speech and morality. The research questions examined were: How does the media frame the meta-debate about Mr Cool? We picked 16 articles and analyzed them with a qualitative content analysis method using framing theory and argumentation techniques in order to be able to examine how the debate were portrayed by the media. We also used the moral panic concept to get a deeper understanding of the mechanics of topics the society is concerned with. We have found that the participants of the debate handled the subject differently and with different strategies, depending on which side they would support. The central discussion was about personal taste, boundary making and the consequences of silencing what is thought to be offensive. The results of the analysis agrees with previous studies and theories in the field when it comes to moral panics and fear as a natural part of our society. History is likely to repeat itself but with other motives and other fears.
