The Rastafari presence in Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, Beloved, and Song of Solomon

Literary scholars frequently analyze the allusions to Western Christianity apparent in Toni Morrison's novels, but these studies overlook the ways in which some of her novels are informed by a Caribbean presence. This study argues that Rastafari themes, symbols, and ideologies are recurrent in Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, Beloved, and Song of Solomon. Rastafari is a social movement primarily concerned with restoring the image of Africa to a holy place. There are certain issues - such as violence, sexuality, politics and religion - which are problematic but have to be dealt with in society. In this dissertation types of controversial issues present in recent Afrikaans youth literature, the portrayal of those issues, and the ways in which solutions are offered for these issues are investigated. The argument follows from the assumption that the literature which the adolescent reads, has a directive value. Quite often the reader will choose to read material about a certain situation with which the reader is also faced in real life. It may be easy for the reader to identify with a character in similar circumstances or facing the same dilemma. Through the actions of the character, the reader can then explore certain avenues or possibilities which have the potential to be helpful in the solution of the problem or issue. For this dissertation research was done about certain controversial issues and related aspects in literature in general, which are then applied to three youth novels: Skilpoppe (1998) by Barrie Hough, Daar's vis in die punch (2002) by Jackie Nagtegaal and Nie vir kinders nie (2005) by Francois Bloemhof. These three texts were chosen because all three of them have generated public discussion, specifically in the media, about the presence of controversial issues. The results indicate the portrayal of the controversial issues to be unbiased and from a non-judgemental authoring perspective. The presence of the text internal corrective, which refers to the portrayal of a certain issue thereby giving it an outcome (positive or negative) or an alternative, is noticeable and is discussed in this dissertation. / Thesis (M.A. (Afrikaans and Dutch))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.

IS supported service work: a case study of global certification

The thesis approaches the issue of IS support for service work, understood as distributed knowledge work taking place as a negotiation between diverse interests. It is based on an ethnographically inspired, longitudinal case study of certification auditing according to a formal generic standard. A handful of certification auditors are followed closely, periodically and comprehensively over three years. Observations are combined with interviews of subjects and colleagues, added by exploration of other material. The practices of company ‘W’ is placed within a larger historical and institutional context. Research literature and theory is explored in four chapters from Social studies of science (STS), Computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), Information systems (IS), Information infrastructures (II) and Management literature. The aim is to identify basic characteristics of service work, its opportunities and challenges, from both the company’s and workers’ perspective. Main topics are Decision Making as negotiated sensemaking, contextual rationality and judgement; Sharing of understanding and meaning as ongoing practiced articulation work aiming for trust and an equifinal level of accord that will ‘find and allow common action’; Perseverance in a capable role that will allow calibration of distributed knowledge is vital for auditors. Common Information Spaces (CIS) is used as a framework to explore the heterogeneous circumstances of identity work in work practices; Predictability in production is sought through various strategies of standardization. Approaches to avoid and counter the inherent side-effects of standardization are described. The empirical results of the research project are presented and analysed in four chapters that look at the issue of i) being an accomplished service worker and ii) practicing service work. Both issues are addressed from a local, individual perspective, and from an organizational perspective in terms of the continuation of quality production. The thesis closes with a Conclusion of organized and standardized service work as displaying Practical drift, in response to the research question RQ0. How is IS supported distributed service work negotiated?, followed by implications for IS research and practice. The empirical case displays the role of information systems (IS) support in distributed service work - as part of a larger assembly of standardization measures, a broad-spectrum approach, displaying practical drift in its effect. The service work of certification auditing is characterized by ongoing negotiation of partly contradictory interests. It is heterogeneously standardized through material, rational/immaterial and social/organizational measures, many in place long before the advent of advanced IS. Traditionally, there are release mechanisms that, on the auditors’ discretion, alleviate the inappropriate effects of standardization. With new harmonising efforts the scope of this personal latitude needs to change, but when first implemented the IS along with new procedures start off as too tight. However, over time adaptations are made, making the overall process self regulatory with feedback mechanisms. On the whole, the thesis aims to contribute to the literature on information infrastructures, on knowledge work in general, and CSCW by drawing on insights from this specific collaborative work in controversial settings. The case provides practical insights for resilient systemizing of knowledge based global service work practices.

This case study dealt with the controversial socioscientific issue that represented the control of fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) which caused damage on local corn crops, and was performed by a high school class in the Junqueira Educational Center, located in Morro Agudo, SP. The relationships among science, technology and society (STS) and central dimensions to make decisions regarding the addressed problem, as well as the learning possibilities offered by the WebQuest could be understood in a broader context. In order to evaluate the student s performance, their whole textual production towards the resolution of the problem was considered (questionnaires, reports, power point presentations etc.), exposing the alternatives found for this particular plague control in corn crops (mechanical, biological and chemical methods), pretending for that matter to be a fictitious company responsable for the optimization of its corn production. It was possible to verify that the students previously divided into three groups managed this particular task successfully which required analytical and scientific judgement. / Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo principal analisar as potencialidades e limitações do desenvolvimento e aplicação de uma WebQuest como material didático on-line, que aborda conteúdos de Química Orgânica relacionados ao Controle Biorracional de Insetos Pragas (CBIP), um programa de pesquisa vinculado ao Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia (INCT) do DQ-UFSCar. Por meio do estudo de um caso sociocientífico controverso acerca do controle de lagarta-do-cartucho do milho (Spodoptera frugiperda) por alunos do 3º ano do Ensino Médio do Centro Educacional Junqueira, situado na cidade de Morro Agudo, estado de São Paulo, as interrelações entre Ciência, Tecnologia e Sociedade (CTS) e as demais dimensões centrais para a tomada de posição, bem como as possibilidades de aprendizagem promovidas pela WebQuest proposta puderam ser compreendidos para além do contexto investigado. Para a avaliação da proposta didática foi considerada toda a produção textual dos estudantes para a resolução do problema (questionários; relatórios; apresentação em power point), que compreendia as alternativas encontradas para o controle de S. frugiperda em culturas de milho (métodos mecânicos, biológicos e químicos), com vistas à meta de produção de milho almejada por uma empresa fictícia. Por meio da análise de conteúdo do corpus da pesquisa foi possível verificar que os estudantes, divididos em 3 grupos, buscaram resolver a tarefa que era de natureza analítica, científica e de julgamento.

The present research was carried through in the line of Curriculum, Education and Practical pertaining to school of the Program of Pos-graduation in Education of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria/RS. Initially, I argue that, amongst the many existing problems, in the Education, which need to be faced, one of the most accentuated, particularly in the EJA, is the disentail between the "world of the school" and the "world of the life". Being this problem unleash of others, such as: mere preliminary education, discouragement, the absence of meaning attributed to that if it makes in the school, the low level of knowledge and the reinforcement at culture of the silence . Its comprehended that its possible overcome this release by means of curricular configurations marked out with themes. Thus, it was assumed as theoretician s referenciais: presuppositions of the Brazilian educator Paulo Freire, the movement of Society-Technological-Science, as well as of the Portuguese educator Pedro Reis, which work with the category controversial themes. This work deals with a research of qualitative matrix, more specifically, a study of case in relation to the repercussion of the theme "forestation" in the RS, in the curriculum of the EJA. In this, the inquiry problem was defined by the questioning: which has been the repercussion of the theme "forestation" in the RS, in the curriculum of the EJA? The objective consisted of investigating and identifying possibilities and challenges to be faced in relation to the implementation of this theme in the curriculum of four schools, situated in cities with intense plantations of monocultures to this big project, in phase of implantation in the State. The questions of the research had been: 1) Why the forestation in RS did not re-echo in the EJA s curriculum? and 2) Which the challenges and possibilities of studying this theme, called controversial, in EJA s curriculum? The used instruments, for attainment of the "data", had been: registers written under the form of Diary; questionary and interviews. Of the analysis of the results, it had the identification of five categories that constitute challenges to be faced, which are: 1) Formation excessively broken up, disentailed of the context, 2) Absence of convictions, of accurate answers in relation the controversial aspects of the theme, 3) "Something more", 4) Neutrality of the Teacher and, 5) Professor of Formation or Professor of Information. In terms of signalling of the research, it is distinguished that, for the overcoming of the separation it enters the "world of the school" and the "world of the life", has the overcoming necessity, in the curriculums of majors courses, of the broken up formation, to discipline solely, disentailed of the problems of every day life, considering that the complexity of the contemporaries problems is not attained for such formation / A presente pesquisa foi realizada na linha de Currículo, Ensino e Práticas escolares do Programa de Pós-graduação em Educação da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria/RS. Inicialmente, discuto que, dentre os muitos problemas existentes, na Educação, os quais precisam ser enfrentados, um dos mais marcantes, particularmente na EJA, é a desvinculação entre o mundo da escola e o mundo da vida . Sendo este desencadeador de outros, tais como: o ensino meramente propedêutico, a desmotivação, a falta de significado atribuído ao que se faz na escola, o baixo nível de aprendizagem e o reforço à cultura do silêncio . Entende-se que é possível superar esta desvinculação mediante configurações curriculares balizadas por temas. Assim, assumiu-se como referenciais teóricos pressupostos do educador brasileiro Paulo Freire, referenciais do denominado movimento CTS, como também do educador português Pedro Reis, o qual trabalha com a categoria temas controversos. Este trabalho trata de uma pesquisa de cunho qualitativo, mais especificamente, um estudo de caso quanto à repercussão do tema florestamento no RS, no currículo da EJA. Nesta, o problema de investigação foi definido pelo questionamento: qual tem sido a repercussão do tema "florestamento" no RS, no currículo da EJA? O objetivo consistiu em investigar e identificar possibilidades e desafios a serem enfrentados quanto à implementação deste tema no currículo de quatro escolas, situadas em municípios com intensas plantações de monoculturas ligadas a este megaprojeto, em fase de implantação no Estado. As questões de pesquisa foram: 1) Por que o "florestamento" no RS não repercutiu no currículo da EJA? e 2) Quais os desafios e possibilidades de se estudar este tema, denominado polêmico, no currículo da EJA? Os instrumentos utilizados, para obtenção dos "dados", foram: registros escritos sob a forma de Diários; questionário e entrevistas. Da análise dos resultados, houve a identificação de cinco categorias que constituem desafios a serem enfrentados, quais sejam: 1) Formação excessivamente fragmentada, desvinculada do contexto, 2) Ausência de certezas, de respostas exatas em relação a aspectos polêmicos do tema, 3) "Algo mais", 4) Neutralidade do Professor e, 5) Professor Formador ou Professor Informador. Em termos de sinalização da pesquisa, destaca-se que, para a superação da separação entre o "mundo da escola" e o "mundo da vida", há a necessidade de superação, nos currículos de cursos de licenciatura, da formação fragmentada, unicamente disciplinar, desvinculada dos problemas do entorno, considerando que a complexidade dos problemas contemporâneos não é abarcável por tal formação

Being the access to Justice a human right, translating into the citizenship exercise, it is necessary to improve the procedure technique, so that the judgment corresponds to the amounts and complexity of the demands present in the contemporary society, in their inner area as well as the integration process that they make part of. Considering these aspects, this research is structured in order to verify how the main innovations brought by the Olivos Document contribute to the fulfillment of the reasonable duration guarantee of judgment on its area. With the purpose of making it possible, it is used the dialectic method, in view of the variety of understandings concerning the subject and they are used the historical and typological methods in relation to the proceeding. The development of this research allows to state that the complete accomplishment of the constitutional guarantees only will be achievable through an authentic interpretation of the contemporary Civil Procedure, by solving the litigations in an efficient way in the appropriate time. In this context, it is possible to say that some different kinds of proceeding assume an important role in the search of procedure celerity, which contributes, consequently, for the effectiveness of judgment. As a general rule, it is possible to state that the innovations brought by the Olivos Document were responsible to keep the agility which qualifies the proceedings that exist in Mercosul area. Equally, it is necessary that the Review Permanent Court, institution, created by the referred Document, develops case laws regarding the subject matter, so as to bring about the complete observation to the reasonable duration guarantee on this integration process. / A tutela jurisdicional em tempo hábil representa um direito fundamental da pessoa humana, alicerce dos Estados Democráticos de Direito. Sendo o acesso à Justiça um direito fundamental, traduzindo-se no exercício da cidadania, é imperioso o aprimoramento da técnica processual, a fim de que a prestação jurisdicional atenda à quantidade e complexidade das demandas características da sociedade contemporânea, tanto no âmbito interno dos Estados como nos processos de integração a que pertencem. Em vista disso, esta pesquisa está estruturada com o intuito de verificar em que medida as principais inovações trazidas pelo Protocolo de Olivos contribuem para o cumprimento da garantia do prazo razoável da prestação jurisdicional no bloco. Para tanto, é utilizado o método de abordagem dialético, em função da diversidade de entendimentos quanto ao assunto abordado, sendo utilizados os métodos histórico e tipológico quanto ao procedimento. O desenvolvimento do trabalho em apreço permite afirmar que a plena realização das garantias constitucionais somente se tornará possível através de uma interpretação autêntica do Processo Civil contemporâneo, de forma a ver-se o litígio resolvido de forma eficaz no tempo adequado. Nesse contexto, é possível dizer que as tutelas de urgência exercem importante papel na busca pela celeridade processual, contribuindo, conseqüentemente, para a efetividade da prestação jurisdicional. Em linhas gerais, é pertinente afirmar que as inovações trazidas pelo Protocolo de Olivos ao sistema de solução de controvérsias do Mercosul foram responsáveis por manter a agilidade característica dos procedimentos já existentes em sua esfera. Outrossim, é preciso que o Tribunal Permanente de Revisão, figura criada por referido Protocolo, desenvolva uma jurisprudência sobre o assunto, a fim de possibilitar a plena observância da garantia do prazo razoável no bloco.

Syfte: Kontroversiella branscher producerar produkter eller tillhandahåller tjänster vilka kan orsaka stora skador hos enskilda människor men även för samhället i helhet. För företag inom dessa branscher kan det ses som motsägande att engagera sig i CSR-aktiviteter. Det finns studier som undersöker om det finns en möjlighet för företag inom kontroversiella branscher att inte bara ta socialt ansvar utan även kunna öka sin finansiella prestation, men har endast gjort detta för CSR som en helhet. Syftet med denna studie är därför att undersöka vilken eller vilka av CSR-dimensionerna miljö, social och företagsstyrning som har störst effekt på företagets finansiella prestation för företag som agerar inom kontroversiella branscher. Metod: Studien har utifrån en positivistisk forskningsfilosofi antagit en deduktiv ansats för en kvantitativ undersökning. Studien använder enbart sekundärdata och har en longitudinell design där data samlats in för åren 2011-2015. I studiens urval ingår 63 företag inom de kontroversiella branscherna alkohol, spel och tobak utan någon geografisk begränsning. För att mäta olika dimensioner av CSR har måttet ESG använts och för finansiell prestation har måtten Tobin’s Q och ROA använts. Samtlig data för måtten har hämtats från Thomson Reuters Datastream och behandlats i statistikprogrammen SPSS och STATA för att sedan analyseras utifrån multipla regressioner. Resultat & slutsats: Studiens resultat visar att det finns ett positivt samband mellan den sociala dimensionen och finansiell prestation, ett negativt mellan företagsstyrningsdimensionen och finansiell prestation medan vi inte finner något stöd för ett samband mellan miljödimensionen och finansiell prestation. För kontroversiella branscher visar det att ett engagemang i den sociala dimensionen av CSR är det enda som har en positiv effekt på företagens finansiella prestation.  Examensarbetets bidrag: Studien bidrar med en bättre förståelse för hur kontroversiella branscher kan öka sin finansiella prestation genom ett CSR-engagemang. Tidigare resultat har funnit varierande resultat angående sambandet mellan CSR och finansiell prestation och genom att undersöka olika dimensioner av CSR har vi bidragit till att öka förståelsen till de varierande resultaten. Förslag till vidare forskning: I vår studie har vi använt oss av ESG som mått för olika dimensioner av CSR vilket gav oss en population på 112 företag för hela världen. Vidare forskning bör därför fokusera på ett annat mått för CSR för att få en större population vilket bidrar till högre validitet än vad vår studie har. Vi föreslår även att framtida studier analyserar vardera år för sig för att se på hur kontroversiella företags CSR-engagemang utvecklas över åren, för en djupare förståelse om dess samband med finansiell prestation. / Aim: Controversial industries produces products or offer services which can cause great damage not only for separate individuals but also for the society in total. For businesses within these industries it could be contradictive to commit in CSR-activities. There are studies that examines if there is a possibility for businesses to not only take a social responsibility but also increase their financial performance. In earlier studies it has been executed mostly for CSR in whole and the aim of this study is therefore to investigate which of the CSR-dimensions environment, social and corporate governance that has the greatest effect on financial performance for businesses operating within controversial industries. Method: From a positivist research philosophy the study has taken a deductive approach for a quantitative examination. The study only uses secondary data and a longitudinal design where data was collected for the years 2011-2015. The study´s sample consists of 63 businesses within the controversial industries alcohol, gambling and tobacco without any geographical limits. To measure different dimensions of CSR we used the measurement ESG and for financial performance we used Tobin’s Q and ROA. All data for the measurements has been collected from the database Thomson Reuters Datastream and processed in the statistical programs SPSS and STATA to later be analyzed with a multiple regression. Results & Conclusions: The result of the study shows a positive relationship between the social dimension and financial performance, a negative relationship between the corporate governance dimension and financial performance while we couldn’t find any support for a relationship between the environmental dimension and financial performance. For businesses in controversial industries it shows that a commitment in the social dimension of CSR generated the only positive relationship. Contribution of the thesis: The study contributes with a better understanding for how controversial industries can increase their financial performance through a CSR-commitment. Earlier studies have found varying results regarding the relationship between CSR and financial performance within controversial industries. Through our research we have contributed to a greater understanding to the varying results and the possible underlying reason of them. Suggestions for future research: In our study we used ESG as a measurement for different dimensions of CSR which gave us a population of 112 businesses for the whole world. Further studies should therefore focus on another measurement for the dimensions of CSR to get a bigger population, which will create a higher validity then our study has. For the future we suggest analyzations of each year separately to see how businesses within controversial industries develops regarding their CSR-commitment and financial performance over the years for a deeper understanding of the relationship.

La période est marquée par des projets de réforme qui ont des conséquences importantes sur l'enseignement de l'Histoire. Cependant, les professeurs d'Histoire, peu nombreux dans la population active, restent divisés, aussi bien sur la stratégie syndicale à adopter que sur les questions pédagogiques ou historiographiques soulevées par ces réformes. En effet, les professeurs se rattachent à des cultures syndicales ou associatives particulières et poursuivent souvent des objectifs opposés. Néanmoins, ces clivages peuvent être comblés, grâce à l'action de syndicalistes soucieux de rechercher des alliés, afin de briser l'isolement dans lequel se trouve leur organisation. Par conséquent, les représentants des professeurs disposent de marges de manœuvre limitées, mais réelles, pour s’opposer aux réformes qu'ils redoutent. / The period is marked by reform projects which have important consequences on the teaching of History. However, history teachers, few in the working population, remain relatively divided as well on the trade-union strategy, as on the teaching or historiographical issues raised by the reforms. Teachers, indeed, are attached to particular trade-union cultures, privileging different goals. However, this trade union rift can be filled by the action of trade unionists, anxious to search allies in order to break the isolation of their organization. Consequently, teacher representatives thus have often only leeway limited, but real, to be opposed to the reforms which they fear.

A bottom-up movement has emerged, thanks to the actions of "coalitions ofcauses" (especially those of parents' associations) which have carried out a work of empowerment,in order to appropriate the research work, legitimate themself against the medical power, and claimrights with the public authorities.This reasearch explore the reasons why Autism became a political issue in the mid-1990s untilbeing recognized as a "Great national cause" in 2012. It elaborate an analysis of the process thatchange the status of autism (family problem first, social problem then, and political problem at end)and define the possible public treatment.
