Nature of positive emotions in the assessment of depression: A new view in psychometrics / Naturaleza de las emociones positivas en la evaluación de la Depresión: una nueva visión en psicometríaMoscoso, Manolete S. 25 September 2017 (has links)
Current research in the field of emotions has demonstrated a strong causal correlation between stressful life events and clinical depression. The conceptual framework of this scientific study is taking into consideration the theoretical ideas developed by the laboratories of Alex Zautra, and Susan Folkman about the co-existence of positive and negative emotions during the experience of stress and depression. The principal purpose of this study is to report the convergent validity of the Multicultural State-Trait Depression Inventory, which supports the new direction in the psychometric assessment of clinical depression. Responses to the items of the state and trait scales were analyzed on a multicultural sample to determine the convergent validity and item analysis of the instrument. The results present empirical evidence that demonstrates a high degree of concurrent validity of the IMUDER subscalesand the reference instruments as shown by Pearson correlations.

Testing the Validity of the PEAK Relational Training System in Assessing Language & Cognition After Brain InjuryWhiteford, Kristen Maryann 01 August 2014 (has links)
As a field, Behavior Analysis lacks an evidence based solution to assessing and treating language deficits in individuals with brain injuries. Research suggests that using direct instruction with persons with brain injuries is the most effective approach for teaching skills. Research on the PEAK Relational Training System suggests it may be applicable to adults with brain injuries because it does not have an age maximum and it assesses and trains complex language skills. The purpose of the current research is to determine the PEAK Relational Training System's potential applicability in assessing language and cognition functioning in adults with brain injury. 20 adults with brain injuries served as the participants for this study. Using a Pearson Correlation, the relationship between performance on the PEAK assessment and the Ross Information Processing Assessment (RIPA-2), pre-morbid education levels, Glasgow Coma Scale scores, and the location of injury in the brain was analyzed. Significant relationships between PEAK and RIPA-2 scores and PEAK and number of years since injury were shown. Furthermore, implementation of the PEAK was shown to be highly reliable. The current research has shown the effectiveness of the PEAK Relational Training System Direct Training Assessment for adults with brain injury.

Estilos de aprendizagem em ações educacionais ofertadas a distância: evidências de validade, validade convergente e análise conceitual / Learning styles in e-learning actions: Validity evidences, convergent validity and conceptual analysis.Raissa Bárbara Nunes Moraes 10 May 2016 (has links)
The constant need to develop individual and organizational competences linked to e-learning projects expands the possibility of access to professional training and qualification programs offered by higher education institutions (HEIs) and other organizations of the productive system. A great technological progress is becoming increasingly widespread in this recent e-learning field. However, this type of education is very lacking in systematic studies. Variables related to the customer profile needs to be further investigated, like the Learning Styles variable. This last requires a more precise definition, especially to ensure the quality of the instruments used to measure this construct. The Learning Styles concept is often related to the Strategy Styles concept without mentioning the proper differences between them. Besides that, the literature indicates that such costumers characteristics variables may be related to the Evasion in e-learning courses. This research aimed to carry out the conceptual analysis of Learning Styles through the construction and verification of validity evidence of a measuring instrument and the convergent validity with Learning Strategies. The Learning Styles instrument was built, underwent semantic validation by judges and evidence of statistical validity were verified. It was also shown that students who made more use of Self-Regulatory Learning Strategies, as well as Behavioral Strategies and value the aspects of the environment in which they realize its studies (ie, have more Environmental Preferences) tend not to leave the course. The convergent validity between Learning Styles and Learning Strategies instruments showed that the instruments reflect the historical relationship between these concepts. Many aspects of Learning Strategies are also related to the Learning Styles aspects. The results showed an adequate definition of Learning Styles in the field of Organizational and Work Psychology (OWP). For future research, it is recommending the use of more consistent statistical techniques such the Confirmatory Factor Analysis as well as Structural Equation Modeling, which could measure more accurately how the Styles and Learning Strategies influence the Evasion in e-learning in the higher education institutions context.

The development of a new transformational leadership questionnaire.Alimo-Metcalfe, Beverly M., Alban-Metcalfe, R.J. January 2001 (has links)
No / This study sought to investigate the characteristics of 'nearby' leaders by eliciting the constructs of male and female top, senior, and middle-level managers and professionals working in organizations in two large UK public sectors (local government and the National Health Service). An instrument, the Transformational Leadership Questionnaire (TLQ-LGV), was developed and piloted on a national sample of 1464 managers working for local government organizations. Analysis of the data, presented here, revealed the existence of nine highly robust scales with high reliabilities (.85) and with convergent validity (range r = .46 to .85). These findings are discussed, together with suggestions for subsequent research.

A novel measure to assess self-discrimination in binge eating disorder and obesityRudolph, Almut, Hilbert, Anja 24 June 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Stigmatized obese individuals tend to internalize the pervasive weight stigma which might lead to self-discrimination and increased psychopathology. While explicit and implicit weight stigma can be measured using self-report questionnaires and Implicit Association Tests (IAT), respectively, the assessment of self-discrimination relied solely on self-report. The present study sought to develop an IAT measuring implicit self-discrimination (SD-IAT) in samples of obese individuals with and without binge-eating disorder (BED). Seventy-eight individuals were recruited from the community and individually matched in three groups. Obese participants with BED, obese participants without BED (OB), and a normal weight control group without eating disorder psychopathology (HC) were assessed with the SD-IAT and other measures relevant for convergent and discriminant validation. Results revealed significantly higher implicit self-discrimination in the BED group when compared to both OB and HC. Furthermore, significant correlations were found between the SD-IAT with body mass index, experiences of weight stigma, depressive symptoms, and implicit self-esteem. Finally, implicit self-discrimination predicted eating disorder psychopathology over and above group membership, and experiences of weight stigma. This study provides first evidence of the validity of the SD-IAT. Assessing implicit self-discrimination might further increase understanding of weight stigma and its significance for psychosocial functioning among vulnerable obese individuals.

Previous issue date: 2002-12-18 / Considering the evidence of reliability and validity of the Escala Diagn?stica Adaptativa Operacionalizada-Redefinida (EDAO-R) when applied to adults, and the necessity to expand the range of tools and procedures available for the assessment of the elderly people, the main goal of this study is to estimate EDAO-R s reliability and convergent validity applied to the elderly people. Ss were 80 older persons (60 years old or more), of both genders (85% of women), who attend to third age groups. The majority (66,25%) was in the young-old group (60-69 years old), was either married (42,5%) or widowed (40%), having son (83,75%), catholic (75%), retired (61,25%), with many different professions, living in their own home (83,75%), alone (28,75%) or with husband / wife (27,5%), and of middle class (61,3%). EDAO-R is a clinical assessment, and then the reliability was taken from an interrater coefficient (Cohen s kappa) between two independent judges. The convergent validity was taken across assessment instruments, Ferrans and Power s Quality of Life Index (IQV) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), as external criterion. The results showed statistically significant interaction, taken through the Spearman s correlation test, between EDAO-R and age (rs= -0,261, p<0,01) and, through the Contingency test between EDAO-R and the person s occupational conditions (C=0,468, p<0,05). The sample tended to the best adaptive levels when assessment through EDAO-R, as to the best scores when assessment through IQV and GDS-15. The reliability for the adaptive efficacy was ? =0,503. When analyzed by EDAO-R s sectors, the Affective-Relational had k=0,551; Productivity had k=0,459; Organic had k=0,612 and the Social-Cultural had k=0,650, which are considered from fair to good. Statistically significant interactions were observed through Spearman s correlation test, between EDAO-R and IQV (rs=-0,449, p<0,01) and between EDAO-R and GDS-15 (rs=0,397, p<0,01). The results are discussed considering the socio-demographic profile of the sample, and indicate that EDAO-R is a reliable and valid measure of the adaptive efficacy when applied to the elderly people who attend to third age groups. Besides that, considering the used operational assessment categories, it s possible to obtain good agreement scores between independent judges.

Previous issue date: 2014-02-06 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Background: Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are developmental disorders characterized by qualitative impairment in reciprocal social interaction, language and communication and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests, and activities and they are defined based on standardized clinical criteria as such those from international manuals as ICD and DSM, or based on clinical tools, mainly the semi-structured interviews, such as the Autism Diagnostic Interview- Revised (ADI-R), a recognized gold standard diagnostic tool for ASD. This interview was recently translated into brazilian Portuguese, and it was preliminarily validated for this language. However, this process has been occurred with a small sample in a specific state of Brazil. Besides, other validity evidences, as convergent validity were not explored in this study. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the Convergent Validity between the Brazilian version of the ADI-R and a screening tool Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC). Method: For this study, 20 parents or caregivers of children and teens diagnosed with ASD were recruited from the Presbyterian Mackenzie University ASD Clinic, and from the Federal of São Paulo State University Social Cognition Clinic. The children were submitted to a clinical multidisciplinary evaluation, and neuropsychological evaluation that also consisted on application of the ABC. Another researcher, a Child Psychiatrist with expertise on ASD was previously trained and allowed for conducting and codificating the ADI-R. Results: The age of the probands has ranged between 6 and 19 years old, 90% of them were male. The correlations between both the tools, using the Pearson coefficient were mostly positive, and they have ranged between average to high with statistical significance., considering the 3 mains domains of the ADI-R and the five main domains of the ABC. Conclusions: Evidence of convergent validity was found when comparing ADI-R results with ABC/ICA. Desses, 90% eram do sexo masculino.

Parents’ attachment state of mind is known to influence their child’s development in various domains as well as the attachment relationship. Indeed, the attachment type that children develop is significantly associated to their parent’s attachment state of mind, including among foster families. Adults’ attachment representations can be assessed using the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and the Adult Attachment Projective (AAP) that categorize adults in corresponding attachment categories with very different classification systems. Studies have examined convergent validity between the both measures among different populations, but none among foster mothers. Moreover, studies revealed significant convergence between attachment categories, but none has examined the convergence between dimensional scales of both measures. Some authors have proposed that differences according to attachment may be better explained continuously rather than with categories. Thus, this study aims to investigate the convergent validity between the overall classifications as well as dimensional scales of the AAI and the AAP and their association to the global score of depression obtained at Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI). The sample consists of 54 foster mothers (mean age: 39) from Quebec (Canada). Results show acceptable convergence when participants a separated in autonomous and non-autonomous categories but not for the four-way classification and the resolved and unresolved division. Some dimensional scales of the AAI and the AAP were significantly associated and one scale of the AAP was associated to the global score of depression as assessed by the BDI. In sum, the two measures categorized adults in similar manners, but some discrepancies are observed in the insecure states of mind.
