"Doing" parenthood : fragile families in the fast life and under mass correctional supervision

Parenthood is a role that shapes the lives of parents and children. According to the sociology of families and marriages, criminology, and the sociology of punishment, the most alienated individuals in unequal America practice parenthood in fragile families struggling with poverty, the code of the street, and under correctional supervision. In attempts to connect and contribute to these literatures, this research project examines how individuals' delinquent/criminal role performance on the street stage and client/inmate role performance on the correctional stage influence their parent role performance on the home stage. To do so, this qualitative study collected 57 semi-structured interviews (12 mothers and 45 fathers) and analyzes participants' parent role, delinquent/criminal role, and client/inmate role. The findings suggest that a cross-generational role conflict shapes participants' parent role performance throughout their life course. Although conflicting roles (roles with conflicting expectations) can coexist in the self, limited resources (time, energy, and money) and problematic boundaries (weak or impenetrable) between social situations bring role conflict to the center of role performance. In this case, the role conflict between participants' ideal parent role on the home stage, delinquent/criminal role on the street stage, and client/inmate role on the correctional stage shapes participants' parent role performance throughout their life course.

An Educational Transition: Post-Secondary Correctional Education - A Qualitative Case Study

This study examines the transition of a post-secondary correctional education (PSCE) system formerly facilitated by higher education to the current system administered by the State Department of Corrections (SDC). This study used qualitative case study methodology utilizing multiple perspectives from five different stake-holding groups or five socials units: state legislators, county law enforcement personnel, state higher education administrators, SDC personnel, and technical college personnel. A thick, rich description of the transition was obtained by relying on multiple perspectives recorded in interviews of stakeholders in PSCE.The stakeholders’ perception of this educational transition that changed PSCE in one state was shaped by personal perspectives on issues surrounding the education of the incarcerated. The rhetoric, political machinations, and reality of this transition define stakeholders’ perspectives of the driving forces that initiated the facilitation of PSCE from a Higher Education run system to one run by the SDC.

A comparison of the predictors of hepatitis B vaccination acceptance amongst health care and public safety workers in Australia

This thesis examines the results of a hepatitis B vaccination questionnaire study that was completed by medical officers, nurses, carers of the developmentally disabled, and correctional officers in the Greater Western Sydney area of New South Wales, Australia. The main aim of the study was to contrast these four high risk occupational groups for their acceptance of hepatitis B vaccination, seroconversion status, and behavioural, attitudinal, motivational and institutional determinants of their vaccination status. The results of the thesis revealed that medical officers and nurses were the most likely to be tested and vaccinated for seroconversion, while DD carers and correctional officers had the largest number of Not Vaccinated respondents. The findings of the questionnaire are discussed in some detail. It is also suggested that groups differ in the degree of hepatitis risk anxiety they experience as well as the degree of control felt over their health status. A number of indications for personal, institutional and governmental interventions to increase vaccination levels are discussed. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

<p>This study investigates if there is a scientific consensus among experts in regard to diagnosing psychopathy, treatment of psychopaths, and if psychopathy is a reliable/valid predictor for recidivism. These results have been compared to how psychopathic diagnoses’ are used within the Swedish correctional system. Questionnaires were answered by 11 experts in the field of psychiatry and psychology. The results showed that no consensus exists in regard to diagnosing psychopathy, or its treatment. As for predicting recidivism there is someagreement. In short, different professionals claim different views. The Department of Corrections official position was static, e.g. psychopaths can be easily identified and most should be denied treatment. A Safe Space for a Second Chance: Exploring the Role of Performative Space in Delivering Education Programs to Justice-involved Adults in the Prison and the Community

This thesis explores the structure and delivery of education programs to justice-involved adults in Canadian federal prisons and in the community. A series of semi-structured interviews as well as three volumes of the Journal for Prisoners on Prisons were analyzed using a qualitative approach to determine whether or not principles of adult education and components of performative space are present in current correctional education strategies. The findings suggest that while there are occurrences of both elements in the education that is provided to prisoners, the programs in the community are much more reflective of these adult learning standards. This project highlights the need for research into the area of adult correctional education, increased collaboration between the fields of criminology and education, and provides a framework from which future research can continue.
