Socio-Cultural Adjustment of International Students as Expatriates in AmericaZhao, Li 01 December 2010 (has links)
This study examined the relationships between international students’ ethnic identity, self-efficacy, uncertainty avoidance, and their socio-cultural adjustment. A total of 65 international students (aged 18 to 33 years) from seven countries completed the online questionnaire. As hypothesized, path analyses demonstrated a positive relationship between students’ self-efficacy and their socio-cultural adjustment. International students’ uncertainty avoidance had a negative relationship with their self-efficacy, but a positive relationship with ethnic identity. The hypotheses that international students’ ethnic identity and uncertainty avoidance are negatively correlated to their socio-cultural adjustment were not supported in the present study.

The Politics of Cultural Power: Canadian Participation at the Venice and São Paulo Biennials, 1951-1958DIGGON, ELIZABETH 27 September 2012 (has links)
Biennials, both historically and in the present, form a significant part of the contemporary art world. However, beyond simply acting as platforms for contemporary art, these extensive, recurring international exhibitions also facilitate complex dialogues involving a variety of agents, both cultural and political. With the inherently political nature of these exhibitions in mind, this thesis examines Canadian participation in the Venice and São Paulo biennials from 1951 to 1958. By examining what I identify as the triple purpose of the biennial - the exhibition of contemporary art, the facilitation of cultural diplomacy, and the creation and reinforcement of cultural nationalist narratives - this paper further explicates the National Gallery of Canada’s role in defining Canadian culture and the relationships between visual culture, cultural nationalism, cultural diplomacy and institutional politics in the postwar era.
Drawing upon Judith Balfe’s conception of the utilization and manipulation of visual culture for nationalistic or diplomatic ends, I argue that participation in the Venice Biennale served as a means of reinforcing the presence of an NGC-defined culture of Canadian art to an international audience comprised mainly of artistic and diplomatic elite. Conversely, participation in the São Paulo Bienal served primarily as a conduit for the Department of External Affairs to project a positive image of Canadian culture to other nations and foster cordial relations between like-minded nations. I contend that a comparative analysis of Canadian participation in the two biennials highlights the complicated relationship between the NGC and the Department of External Affairs as well as the ideological adherence of both institutions towards liberalism and liberal democracy. / Thesis (Master, Art History) -- Queen's University, 2012-09-26 16:43:34.318

Kulturell fostran : En didaktisk studie av talet om kulturella relationer i texter om skola och utbildning / Cultural Education : On Cultural Relations in Texts about School and EducationBrantefors, Lotta January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to clarify different ideas about cultural relations expressed in the Swedish curriculum, and the potential consequences they may have for children and young people to participate as peers in social and public life. Located at the intersection of a (neo)pragmatic curriculum theory tradition and cultural studies/critical pedagogy, the ambition with the study is two-folded: (1) to clarify the theoretical conditions for cultural relations from an ethnocentric, global, and multicultural perspective and (2) to elucidate and describe the curriculum historical preconditions for cultural relations. In relation to perspectives and analytical tools developed in paper I-III, the investigations show that the cultural thinking in education rests on a liberal and humanistic view with a polite response and a neutral approach that never seems to exceed the comfort zone. A central finding is that there is a need to examine the priviliged position further. The study also demonstrates how the nature of cultural thinking has changed over time. Based on the dominant conceptions four discourses during 1962-2008 are distinguished: A National Discourse in the 60's, a Rational Discourse in the 70's, a Cultural Discourse in the 80-90's and a Pluralistic Neo-national Discourse in the 90-00's. The main conclusion is that despite different rationality the thinking never goes beyond a non-defined and unarticulated "we" and a designated, labelled and well-defined "them". The Swedish curriculum is a curriculum of othering that hardly provides the basis for relations where children and young people can participate as peers. To achieve a more reciprocal relationship, over-recognition of "the others" needs to be toned down, and the special status of the privileged position has to be analyzed in greater extent.

Previous issue date: 2016-05-09 / This dissertation investigates how the intellectual life of Delgado de Carvalho sheds a new light on the role of international relations in the shaping History teaching in Rio de Janeiro during the Vargas government (1930-1945). The aim is to highlight the state's role in promoting cultural exchanges between Brazil and other countries, through the actions of the Ministry of Education and Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Therefore, the hypothesis that guides the work is the idea that Brazil would have sought, through the intellectuals, the expansion of cultural exchanges with many countries in a key moment of reorganization of its nationalist project, highlighting the transactions with the US and France. To reach this conclusion, it articulates the assumptions already present at the historiography with documents recently available to the public to show how international intellectual circularity illustrates the context of Brazilian foreign policy and cultural activities. Finally, it aims to be considered by the debate on the emergence of culture in the International Relations.

Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2017-07-10T19:34:47Z

Previous issue date: 2017-07-10 / Studies over the years have sought to understand the professional retention factors in organizations and national cultures that determine or influence the behavior of individuals. This study aimed to determine the job retention factors and analyze the influence of national cultural characteristics of these factors. The assumption of national differentiation on retention factors is grounded in the literature that considers cultural distinctions at the national level and its influence on the behavior of individuals and in the culture of organizations. The influence of the cultures was analyzed based on their characteristic features and compared to the results obtained in each unit. As methodology, there was applied a quantitative research, with exploratory and descriptive approach. The strategy was a survey, and as a data collection technique was used questionnaire with open and closed questions with scales of 3 and 5 points. For the data analysis, were employed quantitative procedures using the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) software, using methods of descriptive and multivariate analysis. The field of the study was comprised of three subsidiaries from an Italian multinational company which is parts manufacturer for off road segment, and they are located in Brazil, India and China, which were identified in this study as subsidiary X1, subsidiary X2 and subsidiary X3, respectively. It was intended to contemplate with the research, the analysis of retention factors in each unit, the level of satisfaction, the factors that could influence potential leave of the professionals and its relation to the context of cultural characteristics. In short, this study sought to identify whether there was a relationship between retention factors and national cultural characteristics, and also, the retention factors of each unit. The results of the research pointed out that the retention factors of the professionals are influenced by dimensions and cultural characteristics, in which the organizations are inserted. The retention factors and the factors influencing the intention to leave the professionals, both exert different influences on the intention to leave or stay in the organization. From a theoretical point of view, it is expected to have contributed to the scientific field, creating new insights into retention and cultural factors. From an empirical point of view, the objective is to support organizations that implement affiliates in foreign countries, facilitating the process of adaptation. As well, for professionals to improve understanding of the needs of different cultures, facilitating the process of interaction.
