Everything becomes a commodity. The culture, for example, is rearranged, borrowing aspects of a global industry, such as the rules of the market. The cultural dimension is moved from its original meaning. A new social dynamic, which will also be absorbed by a world that until then lived part: the museum world. These entities rather self-centered are forced nowadays to walk towards efforts to suit the demands of social groups. Suffer hybridization processes, shall be organized in a new guise, combining up and generating new structures, objects and practices. Institutions self-centered, many go to structure themselves as mass media. In this context, even the dimension of power seems to be reorganized: a vertical and bipolar structure changes into decentralized and multidetermined sociopolitical relations, where new voices and discourses emerge with power and authority. In this context, adapted to contemporary logic, how can museums secure their position as class values legitimating spaces? The new contemporary guise may just be a new operating mode which will try to secure, in the postmodern context, the construction of a new consensus on the role of museums. It can also camouflage their true role: the maintenance of class hegemony. On this basis, this thesis aims to understand the contemporary dynamics of the elite’s cultural institutions, especially art museums. It wants to structure the sociological model by which these organisms are configured today. To do so, it uses the comparative study as a procedure, and two geographically distant cases, one in Minas Gerais, Brazil, Inhotim Institute, and another in Missouri, United States, the Saint Louis Art Museum, as theoretical framework. In theoretical terms, it is based on authors such as Canclini (2008), Gramsci (2006), Hyussen (1995), Foucault (1999), Bennett (1995) and Bourdieu and Darbel (2007).

Pushing buttons: an ethnographic interview study on toxicity in online gaming cultures

Melin, Ruben January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to research toxicity through how it was understood, experienced, and described by game enthusiasts. The toxicity described is further explored through theories of cultural and symbolic domination and through feminist game studies and the lens of masculinity theory. I have thus looked at the cultural fields of online gaming as social domains sometimes structured by hierarchies, where subjects may be positioned in relation to one another by virtue of norms, their identities, habitus, symbolic capital and through (more or less symbolic) violence.  The study is based on semi-structured interviews with six gaming enthusiasts who are about twenty to forty years old, five identifying as men and one identifying as a woman. Interpretation has been conducted through a thematic and discourse analytically inspired method, and through the theoretical framework primarily consisting of Bourdieu´s (developed) theoretical concepts of fields, capital, habitus and symbolic violence, combined with Iris Marion Young’s theory of cultural dominance and social constructionist theories on masculinity. The study shows how subjects may make sense of online gaming as a social arena often associated to online violence and discrimination, and how this can be further analysed from a gender studies perspective.

Beaulieu, Solange 06 1900 (has links)
The copublishing of the translated version of literary books in Quebec and then distributed under a French publishing brand, is a practice used by editors to broaden the outreach of their books. The process of copublishing is carried out through various methods which tend to evolve in an unpredictable way : editors and translators make compromises about the target language in order to reach their cross-Atlantic markets. What is the nature of these compromises? Are they terminological, lexicographical, cultural or merely subjective? How are they perceived by translators and publishers? This essay explores these questions through the study of four cases of literary works copublished by publishers and literary translators from Quebec. The analysis demonstrates that these compromises, be they cultural or not, have little impact on the quality of French in the copublishing market, which is often in France. But they sometimes create a feeling of cultural dominance on the part of France. This discourse is however nuanced by the type of copublishing practice and the position occupied by translators within the publishing structure. A clearer framework for copublishing practices and a better status for the translator of literary works would contribute to mitigate some of the tensions related to copublishing.

Bishop Dr S. Dwane and the rise of Xhosa spirituality in the Ethiopian Episcopal Church (formerly the Order of Ethiopia)

Mtuze, Peter Tshobiso 30 June 2008 (has links)
The thesis consists of seven chapters with each chapter focusing on a particular aspect of the research topic. Chapter One deals with conventional preliminaries such as aim of study, method of approach, literature overview and other introductory material. Chapter Two is an an overview of the foundations of Bishop Dwane's spirituality and his church's struggle for autonomy. It also covers the origins, the nature and the purpose of Ethiopianism as the central thread in Dwane's theologizing and family history. Chapter Three reflects the attitude of the Anglican Church to African traditional culture as reflected in three historical phases - the era of total onslaught on African culture and religion, the period of accommodation, and the phase of turning a blind eye to these matters for as long as Anglicanism remains intact. Chapter Four contains Dwane's views on various cultural issues culminating in his decision to indigenize his Ethiopian Episcopal Church's liturgy and other forms of worship by incorporating traditional healers into the church and invoking the presence of Qamata and the ancestors in worship. Chapter Five analyses Dwane's prophetic spirituality as evidenced by his advocacy role in fighting for justice and human rights in this country. He relentlessly fought for the rights of those who were victimized by the government of the day, and those who were willfully discriminated against. Chapter Six is on the evolution of an authentic Xhosa spirituality, in particular, and African spirituality in general, in the Ethiopian Episcopal Church. While the main focus of the study is the evolution of Xhosa spirituality, it should be emphasized that the thrust of Dwane's theologizing extended to the evolution of other African spiritualities in the broader church. Chapter Seven is a general conclusion that highlights the main elements of Dwane's spirituality and the heritage he left behind in this regard. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D.
