Designing a model for predicting quality of life based on personality traits and cultural intelligence among Persian-speaking immigrants in France and Canada / Concevoir un modèle de prédiction de la qualité de vie entre les immigrants persanophones en France et au Canada selon leurs caractéristiques et l’intelligence culturelle

Karami, Raana 28 September 2018 (has links)
The statistical work was completed with 317 people. The data collection tools were NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), short version of the WHO quality of life questionnaire and the Cultural Intelligence Questionnaire. For analyzing the data, descriptive and inferential statistics (correlation analysis, regression, and structural equations) were used. The findings show that personality traits have a significant correlation with the quality of life. Among those traits, there is a negative correlation with neuroticism and a positive one with the other four factors. Meanwhile, all the factors of variable “quality of life” have a significant positive correlation with all the components of cultural intelligence. Regarding the goodness-of-fit indices of the final model, we can claim that the provided model and its regression coefficients show that these coefficients would accurately explain the prediction of the quality of life based on personality traits and cultural intelligence.

The effect of identity and personality on cultural intelligence among a group of young South Africans / Natasha Botha

Botha, Natasha January 2014 (has links)
Cultural intelligence (referred to as CQ) has gained increasing attention from research. This is because of the modern-day relevance to globalisation, international management and work diversification. Demographical shifts towards a more diverse South African population contribute to various challenges for successful cross-cultural interactions for young Afrikaans-speaking South Africans. Selective perception, social categorisation, stereotyping, attribution and diversity among South Africa‟s different cultures (race, gender, language, vocabulary, content, accent and appearances) are barriers that must be overcome. The study was a quantitative study. A cross-sectional survey was used to collect the data and to achieve the research objectives. Convenience and quota sampling methods were used to include a sample of young South Africans from a higher education institution (N=252). The participants were young South African students, white, Afrikaans speaking and between the ages of 18 and 22. Questionnaires were distributed, and the participants completed the questionnaire during class and were given 2 hours to complete the questionnaires. The statistical analysis was carried out with the IBM SPSS statistics and the Mplus 7.11 programme. Product-moment correlation coefficients were used to specify the relationships between the variables and multiple regressions to determine which dimensions of personality and identity predicted CQ. The general objective of this research is to determine the relationship between Identity, Personality and Cultural Intelligence among young South Africans. The Erickson Psychosocial Stage Inventory (EPSI) and the Multi-Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) was used to measure personal, ethnic and religious identity. The SAPI-questionnaire was used to measure the constructs, conscientiousness, extraversion, openness, soft-heartedness, relationship-harmony, intellect, integrity and facilitating. Furthermore, the Four Factor Model of Cultural Intelligence Scale was applied to measure the dimensions of CQ, namely, meta-cognitive CQ, cognitive CQ, motivational CQ and behavioural CQ. This study indicated a positive relationship between cognitive CQ and the other three components of CQ. Conscientiousness, emotional stability, extroversion, facilitating, intellect and openness related positively to meta-cognitive CQ. Facilitating, intellect and openness were found to be positively related with motivational CQ. Furthermore, conscientiousness, emotional stability, extroversion, intellect, relationship harmony and soft-heartedness related positively with behavioural CQ. Religious identity has a negative effect on cognitive CQ. Furthermore, intellect, facilitating and ethnic identity predicted meta-cognitive CQ. Soft-heartedness, facilitating, extroversion and religious identity had a positive effect on motivational CQ, influencing young Afrikaans speaking South Africans interest and drive in adapting to cultural differences. Furthermore, soft-heartedness and conscientiousness had a positive effect on behavioural CQ. Recommendations were made for future research and for practise. / MCom (Industrial Psychology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Information-gathering and the strategic use of culture in Herodotus

Fabule, Deborah Kory 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Ancient Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this thesis is to examine examples of information-gathering and political intelligence in Herodotus' Histories. In Herodotus' account, dialogues, anecdotes, and even inserted authorial commentary describe how leaders obtain politically relevant and timely information about other individuals and nations (intelligence). Herodotus links political decisions, based on gathered information, with his presentation of historical causation. In his multi-themed account, Herodotus provides tales of commissioned information-gathering missions, espionage, secret messages, and even disguises as nations and political leaders attempt to find out about their enemies and their allies. While the various anecdotes of information-gathering may not be historically precise, they may, in fact, infer real goals and problems of ancient Greek intelligence practices. The second purpose of this thesis is to explore Herodotus' use of cultural information within decision-making and statecraft. Herodotus presents nomos (culture or custom) as a compelling force for human behavior and military action. By articulating the importance of cultural information to political and military intelligence, Herodotus' work foreshadows modern intelligence theories and practices. This nomos-aspect of Herodotus' information-gathering anecdotes is especially relevant to current post-modern trend of culturally-based intelligence solutions to western counter-insurgency efforts.

The present study aimed to understand the use of cultural intelligence in international joint ventures in high-technology sectors, taking as case study the HT Micron, which was born from the union of the Brazilian Parit Group and South Korean Hana Micron to understand the steps performed to consolidate the business. The use of cultural intelligence still a challenge for many people and companies, as well as being an area little known in academy, as pointed Livermore (2010), with a wide field of research to be explored and developed. In this research was tried to provide a sequence of information about the company, assessing the cultural aspects involved in intercultural management and cultural intelligence, more visualized through the Brazilian side of the joint venture. Based on the theoretical reasons, performed through a literature research related to the subject, was created an exploratory case study, conducting interviews and personal visits to different areas of the company and people who were involved in the creation of the company, developing a content analysis. The theses contextualizes the semiconductor area, identifies the cultural aspects of the realization of the joint venture, shows how is the HT Micron in intercultural management and use of cultural intelligence, and suggest a set of recommendations in the area of cultural intelligence for international joint ventures as the HT Micron. As a result of the research can be seen that the company had sporadic actions in the cultural development, featuring a low utilization of the principles of cultural intelligence in the shaping of the joint venture, which could be better explored in the day-by-day operation.

The Relationship Between Cultural Intelligence and Work Outcomes of Expatriates in China

Diemer, Barbara Joanna 01 January 2016 (has links)
International assignment failures cost an organization roughly 3 to 4 times an expatriate's annual salary with the most expatriate failures cited for work assignments in China. Previous scholarly research identified cultural intelligence (CQ) as being influential to expatriate work outcomes. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationships among a subset of CQ predictor variables and work outcome related dependent variables. Quantitative analysis regarding the relationship between CQ and work outcomes for U.S. nationals working in China does not currently exist in the scholarly research. Improvement of expatriate work outcomes and reduction of failed assignment costs is the intention. The study included self-reported measurements collected via online surveys from 88 U.S. nationals with work experience in China. Pearson correlation test results and multiple linear regression analysis indicated significant predictive relationships between CQ and work performance (F(4, 83) = 8.202, p < .001, adjusted R2 = .249) and between CQ and job satisfaction (F(4, 83) = 3.522, p < .05, adjusted R2 = .104). Motivational CQ had a statistically significant predictive power for work performance and job satisfaction. These findings suggest that the CQ construct may help to assess expatriate assignment readiness. The social change implications of this study include the utilization of CQ in better identification, selection, and training of employees for international assignments; improvement of expatriate work outcomes; reduction of expatriate turnover; and reduction of expatriate assignment costs.

The Effect of Nationality Differences on the Emotional Intelligence of Leaders

Nikoui, Hossein Reza 01 January 2015 (has links)
Previous studies related to manager effectiveness and organizational culture have determined that emotional intelligence (EI) is a critical predictor of intercultural adjustment and business success. However, few investigators have examined the relationship between EI and nationality differences. In today's globalized business environment, such understanding is crucial to the development of more effective leadership programs for international workers. This quantitative study explored the degrees to which the EI of organizational managers varied across nationalities. A theoretical framework, provided by several theories related to personality, leadership, and types of intelligence, created a lens through which to analyze study results. The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Short Form was used to gather data on EI from a random sample of over 200 company leaders. At least 40 participants from each of 5 countries-Canada, Mexico, Slovakia, Turkey, and the United States-were included. The research question was tested using analysis of variance to determine any role of nationality in the EI of company leaders. Findings suggested there was no relationship between nationality and EI. This study contributed to the leadership field by indicating direction for future research. Results suggested that a more effective leadership training model may emphasize cultural factors, rather than nationality. It may also be important to consider how required leadership skills differ between domestic and international employees. A revised model may serve as a guide in the development of tools for educators, trainers, and students working in the modern business world.

Civil-militär samverkan som resurs för psykologiska operationer

Eklund, Daniel January 2009 (has links)
CIMIC har enligt analysramen goda möjligheter att genom sitt mångfacetterade kontaktnät och möjligheten att genomföra riktade projekt, inhämta underrättelser väl anpassade efter psyops behov.</p> / <p>Information operations constitute a more and more important part of the Swedish international operations, where Psychological Operations (PSYOPS) and Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) are included. Due to the basic view of Swedish information operations CIMIC is meant to have a support function for PSYOPS during international operations. This function of support is however only briefly specified in the documentation of the Swedish Armed Forces. The essay aims at describing and analysing how Swedish PSYOPS can receive support from CIMIC during an international operation.</p><p>The essay specifically intends to describe PSYOPS and CIMIC individual  characteristics and features. The analysis has been carried out with the help of a descriptive method.</p><p>To create a theoretical frame for the analysis Cialdinis theory on human influence and Agrells theory on the complexity of the intelligence analysis have been used.</p><p>The results of the essay show that PSYOPS is in great need of cultural intelligence gained from the appointed target audiences in the operation area. CIMIC has according to the analysis a good potential concerning collecting cultural intelligence thanks to its well-developed circle of contacts and its possibilities to accomplish CIMIC projects. </p>
