Exploring the Influence of Cultural Participation on the Subjective Well-Being of Victims of Crime in Mexico:

Reyes Martinez, Javier January 2021 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Margaret Lombe / Thesis advisor: Oscar Alfonso Martínez Martínez / The influence of cultural participation (in this study, attendance, engagement, and consumption in cultural and artistic activities) on the subjective well-being of victims of crime has not been thoroughly studied. Considering the increasing incidence of crime in Mexico, for policymakers and practitioners, it is necessary to understand the strategies and adaptations that persons utilize in response to crime victimization and the effects of this on their subjective well-being. With data from the 2012 Self-reported Well-Being Survey (BIARE, n=10,654) and through a generalized structural equation modeling analysis, the main purpose of the dissertation is to understand whether cultural participation can moderate or mediate the effects of victimization on individuals’ subjective well-being. Results from the study show an overall positive influence of the cultural participation activities on the subjective well-being of victims of community and structural violence (but not of domestic violence), because, for those who reported higher levels of cultural participation, the probability of better subjective well-being was higher. This has implications for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners in the improvement of the general quality of life of crime victims / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2021. / Submitted to: Boston College. Digital Existence in the Digital Theater : An Ethnographic, Transnational Study of Artistic Practices and Participation

Wennerström, Elisabeth January 2022 (has links)
This thesis argues that the research problem, which describes a lack of a common understanding of the digital age, and what its major transformations mean for different stakeholders, can be fruitfully interrogated by attending to emergent forms of making sense in the digital theater. The aim of the study was met by raising and responding to the following research questions: How does the digital theater understand and experience digital existence in participatory potentials, and how do creatives in the digital theater bridge participatory intensities, the tensions and sometimes gaps between experienced reality and digital capabilities to expand on their own and their theaters’ participatory potential? The study combined a phenomenological approach, with an ethnographic method and narrative analysis, supported by a theoretical framework of existential media studies with a particular focus on digital existence, in combination with prospects for participation, using cultural participation theories. The original contribution of the study was to apply theoretically sampled dimensions that reflected and expanded on cultural participation theories and existential media studies in a theorizing synthesis, and that revealed three intermingling themes: subverting, intentionality expanded, and presence, i.e., how the respondents navigated, bridged and communicated participatory potentials to subvert participatory contexts to expand and extend on participation, intentionally, and with close attention to contentious considerations in the present moment.

Socialt och kulturellt deltagande hos kvinnor med utländsk bakgrund / Social and cultural participation among immigrant women

Muya, Josefin January 2015 (has links)
The background of this study is that previous studies have shown that the social and cultural participation of women born outside of Sweden is lower than for those born in Sweden. These studies have also shown that the health of these women is generally lower than for women born in Sweden. The purpose of this study is to evaluate which social and cultural activities women born outside Sweden involve themselves in, what meaning these activities hold for their personal well-being and how they themselves describe the experiences that have meaning in as far as their perception of participation is concerned. A qualitative method was used where data was collected through 8 semi-structured interviews conducted on women born outside Europe who were above the age of 18. A content analysis was used to analyze the material and the results showed that all participants were involved in social and cultural activities such as physical exercise, religious activities and social media. The participants believed that the activities promoted their health, physical and otherwise. The participants also indicated that factors such as language and culture influenced their participation. It was concluded that participation in social and cultural activities increases the participants’ well-being and that there exists factors especially language that affects women’s participation. From a Public Health perspective, it is important to focus on work that improves health which in turn promotes integration and not assimilation.

Between social harmony and political dissonance : the institutional intricacies of the Venezuelan System of Children and Youth Orchestras

Mora Brito, Daniel Ignacio 05 October 2011 (has links)
This study explores the narratives of day-to-day practices of the Venezuelan System of Children and Youth Orchestras, one of the oldest social development strategies in Venezuela, and one of the most successful social inclusion and cultural participation programs in the world. Its main objective is to identify some of the policy-based and organizational factors contributing to the success, autonomy, and longevity of this initiative since its creation in 1975. In order to assess the relative importance of these factors, the study reviews the sociopolitical circumstances surrounding the evolution of the program and examines the perceptions of its main actors and clients about key internal processes and organizational dynamics. More generally, this case is offered as a way of better understanding the insularity of bureaucratic efficiency in Latin America. / text

El desarraigo en la tercera y cuarta generación de nikkei en Lima y la comunicación actual / Uprooting in the third and fourth generation of nikkei in Lima and current communication.

Cárdenas Shigematsu, Linda Harumi 03 July 2020 (has links)
Currently, there is the problem of uprooting in the third and fourth generation of Peruvians descendents from Japanese immigrants, the Nikkei. This uprooting present in this migrant culture is the result of the historical and sociocultural factors that the first Japanese immigrants who arrived to Peru went through between the 19th and 20th centuries. As well as the influence of the receiving culture (Peruvian culture) over the years. This research aims to identify which communication strategies have influenced in the development of the Peruvian-Japanese communities in Lima, in terms of transmitting and spreading information and their culture through the next Nikkei generations. In addition, it analyzes which communication strategies are used to capture the attention of the third and fourth generation of Nikkei. For this purpose, an interpretative methodology with a mixed methodological strategy is proposed which consist of surveys and semi-structured interviews for the different profiles of descendants: adult representatives of the Nikkei community, participating young Nikkei and uprooted young descendants. The importance of this study is found in the analysis of the use of communication tools for the continuance of the immigrant culture and the transcendence of new values and a new identity to the next Nikkei generations which can serve to develop new communication plans against uprooting. Furthermore, the results can serve as references for other communities in a similar situation. / Trabajo de investigación

Developing literary Glasgow : towards a strategy for a reading, writing and publishing city

Docherty, Paul J. January 2018 (has links)
Since the 1990s, urban cultural policy in the UK has been bound to the cause of urban regeneration. Much has been written in examination and critique of this relationship, but what happens when the direction of strategic attention is reversed and civic leadership seeks to regenerate culture itself? The city of Glasgow, having made capital of culture over many decades, has moved towards a strategy for the development of literary Glasgow. This thesis documents a search for those factors crucial to that strategy. The research focuses on literary Glasgow as one aspect of the city’s cultural sector; identifies and examines gaps in the relationship between the civic cultural organisation and literary communities; and highlights those elements vital to the formation of a strategy for development of the literary in Glasgow. An extended period of participatory ethnographic research within the Aye Write! book festival and Sunny Govan Community Radio, is supplemented with data from interviews conducted across the literary sector and analysis of organisational documentation. Through these a gap has been identified between the policies and operations of a civic cultural organisation, and the desires of those engaged within the literary community. This gap is caused, in part, by the lack of a mechanism with which to reconcile contrasting narratives about the cultural essence of the city, or to negotiate the variations in definitions of value in relation to cultural engagement. The interdisciplinary approach builds upon insights from existing work within publishing studies, cultural policy, complexity theory and organisational studies to construct an understanding of the dynamics of Glasgow’s literary sector. This reveals the need for a framework in support of a landscape of practice, a desire for the placement of boundary objects to facilitate engagement, and the significance of value in relation to participation in literary activity. This work informs a strategy for literary Glasgow and contributes to conversations on strategies for cultural development in other cities.
