Cultural heritage events as a tourism product have increased in recent years, both globally and in South Africa. Within the sphere of cultural heritage tourism, people construct and present their heritage and traditions to tourists in a reconstructed setting. To the visitors and people who are directly involved with the planning of the event, a sense of belonging and group identity are experienced by linking the present to the past in a celebratory mood. The annual ‘Afrikaanse Taal en Kultuurvereniging’ (ATKV) Riel Dance Competition in South Africa is an example of such an event, which celebrates a threatened cultural heritage in the form of a competition. The idea of a dance competition in order to preserve cultural heritage started in response to a feeling of marginalisation of culture among certain segments of the Coloured community of South Africa after the establishment of democracy in 1994. This dissertation used the constructivist-interpretivist approach in geographical enquiry to explain the role of cultural heritage events. Multiple sources of evidence and information were used in this study, including focus group interviews, observations, audio-visual materials, questionnaires and participant observation. The participants and visitors alike felt that the ATKV Riel Dance Competition serves an important role in preserving and protecting the cultural heritage of the Coloured community. The competition played a role in fulfilling the need of a large percentage of its participants and visitors for a group identity. There was no significant financial benefit for the communities who participated in the ATKV Riel Dance Competition. However, on a political level the competition played an important role in nation-building and cultural expression in South Africa. / Geography / M.A. (Geography)

A dissertação “Descobrindo o valor das coisas ao meu redor”: vivência de educação patrimonial no ensino de história tem por objetivo analisar como o patrimônio cultural local, que se encontra no interior e no entorno de escolas periféricas, pode ser utilizado como fonte de conhecimento para o fortalecimento da cidadania, possibilitando um diálogo entre o ensino de História e as questões pertinentes à Educação Patrimonial. Para o desenvolvimento dessa pesquisa foi construído e desenvolvido o Projeto de Educação Patrimonial “Descobrindo o valor das coisas ao meu redor” a partir de uma série de atividades alicerçadas na utilização da metodologia de alfabetização patrimonial, com uma turma do nono ano da Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental Guerino Zugno, localizada no bairro Planalto II, um bairro periférico da cidade de Caxias do Sul-RS. Para a análise dos resultados obtidos, durante a aplicação das oficinas que integram o projeto buscou-se suporte em elementos teóricos acerca do patrimônio e da memória, relacionando-os com a educação patrimonial e a sua interligação com a construção da identidade e o fortalecimento da cidadania, assim como da formação das grandes cidades como espaços de constantes transformações, mas que trazem no seu patrimônio elementos de identidade. Para tanto, trago para discussão a ampliação do tema educação patrimonial nas escolas, a partir de iniciativas em conjunto com as Universidades, propiciando a aproximação da academia com as comunidades. For the development of this research, the Patrimonial Education Project "Discovering the value of things around me" was built and developed from a series of activities based on the methodology of heritage literacy, with a group of the ninth year of the Municipal School of Elementary School Guerino Zugno, located in the district Planalto II, a peripheral district of the city of Caxias do Sul-RS. For the analysis of the results obtained, during the application of the workshops that integrate the project, support was sought in theoretical elements about heritage and memory, relating them to heritage education and its interconnection with the construction of identity and the strengthening of Citizenship, as well as the formation of large cities as spaces of constant transformation, but which bring in their patrimony elements of identity. To this end, I bring to the discussion the expansion of the topic of heritage education in schools, based on initiatives in conjunction with universities, fostering the approximation of academia and communities. The use of heritage conservation tools in the Lower Mainland of British ColumbiaSavoie, Timothy Leonard 11 1900 (has links)
The Lower Mainland of British Columbia is growing rapidly resulting in a
dramatic alteration of the landscape. Associated with this growth is the loss of
community heritage structures and properties. This destruction is occurring at a rapid rate
even though conservation mechanisms, tools and strategies exist.
This thesis examines the practice of heritage conservation and identifies the
heritage conservation tools that are presently being utilized by a number of selected
Lower Mainland municipalities. It then outlines the necessary conditions that a
community must possess for existing conservation tools to be effective.
A literature review of existing heritage conservation statutes was conducted to
identify the statutory tools available for conservation purposes. The primary method of
investigation involved interviewing 13 prominent heritage professionals from the
Provincial Government, selected Municipal Governments, and the private planning
sector. The survey allowed the author to generate a ‘tools chest’ of mechanisms available
for conservation purposes. In total 23 conservation tools were identified from both the
literature review and survey.
Research indicated that the perceived responsibility for heritage conservation in
British Columbia rested with local governments. To date these governments have had
limited success in ensuring long term management and protection of heritage properties
within their jurisdictions. Conservation tools presently being applied to manage these
community resources are limited in scope and applicable only under specific ownership
conditions. In general, local governments are under utilizing the conservation tools available to them. Reasons for this may include the lack of political and public support,
in addition to, monetary and time restraints directed for this purpose.
This study concludes with recommendations for local governments and the
planning profession regarding the direction which these groups should embark on with

Cultural preservation efforts have evolved from traditional, site specific projects administered by a single agency, to regional, multi-jurisdictional projects administered by a cooperative partnership. The projects administered cooperative partnerships are a recent phenomena and are often termed heritage preservation projects.
An analysis of the evolution of cultural preservation efforts is undertaken through historical and case study research. The selected cases are examples of innovative regional cultural preservation efforts of their era. A rich cultural heritage can serve as a vehicle that enlivens all levels of educational development and promotes an interdisciplinary dialogue concerning preservation goals and objectives. A comprehensive, integrated information base is essential to sustaining the viability of this diverse cultural heritage and to promoting a national preservation agenda. The collective experiences and practices of local preservation efforts, when assembled into a readily accessible knowledge base, can effectively inform efforts to resolve preservation challenges nationwide.
As the ideal of historic preservation has come to accommodate a variety of philosophical perspectives, so too must the efforts to adapt new technologies to the tasks of cultural resource management. The development of more effective mechanisms for informing the decision processes will encourage resource administrators to assume greater responsibility for the management of cultural resources. It will enable the preservation community to strengthen its social, economic, and political advocacy for the conservation and celebration of our delicate, yet durable, cultural roots. Through the outreach to public and private constituencies, and through the development of market applications for cost effective preservation products, technologies, and services, the positive socioeconomic benefits of sensible, sensitive cultural resource management will serve to institutionalize the perception of our cultural heritage as an integral part of a healthy, informed society.
The goal of this work is to demonstrate through developed prototypes and projected scenarios, alternatives for technology transfer, adaptation, and application that can facilitate better informed decisions about the management of an increasingly threatened cultural heritage. This body of information will contribute to the resolution of the most critical needs of the preservation process, and will enhance the ability of private, state, and federal agencies to meet their legal obligations in the management and protection of our cultural heritage. The work demonstrates that the whole of the preservation process can be enhanced by exploiting the opportunities inherent in emerging information management technologies. / Ph. D.
