Cidades temporárias: brechas e contrabrechas na cidade. / -

Verano, Paulo Nascimento 18 May 2018 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis is to examine the impact of certain institutional and non-institutional cultural actions circumscribed in the central region of the city of São Paulo --understood symbolically and rhizomatically between the elevated highway President João Goulart (\"Minhocão\", in the downtown district) and the Largo da Batata, in the Pinheiros district, in the western zone of the capital. Such organizations promote the connection between culture and the production of the city. They operate in a continuous tension between consensus and dissent and between the notions of public and private in the city, in a movement that occurs by intentional efforts --often for economic reasons. We will investigate the unexpected and fortuitous clashes with the symbolic in the breachs and in the counterbreachs of the city. We want to contribute to the thinking of new paths for Cultural Policy and Information Science, in which the promotion of dialogue between the city\'s cultural resources and its social actors occurs on improbable connections and many unforeseen times. Constantly starting from the shock and the unstable, yes, but always in search of what is common and projecting other futures in which desire and need are not so far apart. <em>“THE BEST THING THAT’S HAPPENED IN MY LIFE”</em>: THE JOURNEY TOWARD ACCEPTANCE OF ONE’S LGBTQ CHILD IN A SAMPLE OF CUBAN-AMERICANS AND PUERTO RICANS

Abreu, Roberto Luis 01 January 2018 (has links)
Acceptance by a parental figure is one of the most important protective factors for LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) youth and young adults (e.g., Ryan, 2009, 2010). Lack of parental acceptance may lead to a disruption in parent-child relationships and may increase risk for maladaptive behaviors and poorer psychosocial outcomes in LGBTQ youth (e.g., Bouris et al., 2010). Researchers have called for more inclusive samples and methods to better understand the experiences of families from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds (e.g., Heatherington & Lavner 2008). Specific to Latinas/os, cultural factors and theoretically informed interventions that facilitate parental acceptance need systematic investigation (e.g., Ryan, 2009, 2010). The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) examine the cultural strengths and challenges that influence Cuban-American and Puerto Rican parental figures’ journey toward accepting their LGBTQ child; (b) explore how these parental figures reach acceptance; and (c) assess for the impact of an expressive writing (EW) exercise on the affect of these parental figures. Interpersonal acceptance-rejection theory (IPART) and family stress theory were used as a frame for the analysis of the process of acceptance toward one’s LGBTQ child in this sample of Cuban-American and Puerto Rican parental figures. Thirty participants completed a writing intervention after the initial prescreening. The writing intervention asked participants to write a letter about their journey toward accepting their LGBTQ child, including the aspects of their heritage, cultural beliefs, and values that facilitated this process. Thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006, 2013) guided the research design and analysis. The following themes helped parental figures accept their child: (a) family (support, maintaining family unity); (b) interactions with LGBTQ people; (c) resisting and embracing Latina/o gender norms (caballerismo, marianismo); (d) cultural dissonance; and (e) immigration and the American dream. In addition, the following themes described the process of how these parental figures navigated acceptance toward their child: (a) noticing and attempting to change gender atypical behaviors and/or presentation; (b) initial reactions (negative reactions, immediate acceptance); (c) adjusting to the child’s LGBTQ identity; (d) seeking out resources about LGBTQ identity; (e) increasing awareness of LGBTQ oppression; (f) reframing religious and/or spiritual values and beliefs and working through religious and/or spiritual conflict; (g) coping and reframing machismo; (h) balancing family dynamics; (i) highlighting the positive identities in one’s child; (j) learning lessons from one’s child; and (k) benefitting from acceptance. Pre and post affect ratings using the writing intervention illustrated that Cuban-American parental figures were significantly happier and less anxious after writing their acceptance narrative. Although not statistically significant, Puerto Rican parental figures reported increased happiness and decreased anxiousness after writing their acceptance narrative. Implications for psychological practice with Latina/o parents who recently learned about their child’s LGBTQ identity will be discussed.

The connections between values alignment and teamwork : A case study

Nyberg, Sandra, Nilsson, Anette, Skinstad, Erik January 2009 (has links)
Background: Research today highlights the importance of values alignment, but all of the research has been conducted on manufacturing companies. We found it interesting to investigate if the same theories are applicable to the knowledge-intense service sector, such as consultancy firms. Furthermore, research has identified a set of key attributes of successful teamwork, which we find closely related to values alignment. Despite this, we found no previous research within this area. Purpose: This study investigates the connections between values alignment and teamwork at a consultancy firm. Method: Our research was conducted as a case study at the department of Management at a consultancy firm. A survey, based on Barrett’s (2008) Seven Level Consciousness, and Cultural Values Assessment models, was carried out. However, we have modified the model to fit Swedish work-related values. We conducted pre-survey, and follow-up survey interviews with employees at the consultancy firm, as well as an interview with a former employee. This triangulation of information gathering techniques allowed us to ensure the validity of our study. Conclusion: We found a set of four clear relations between values alignment and, what previous research has identified as, key success factors of successful teamwork. Commitment, guidance in decision making, quality of outcome and reduced interpersonal conflicts are all outcomes of values alignment, and they are in different ways connected to one or several of commitment to success and shared goals, commitment to team processes and accountability, interpersonal skills, open communication and feedback or interdependencies.

Dione, Bernard 09 1900 (has links)
A profession basically includes two components: scientific skills and professional values, which are the guidelines of professionals’ daily demeanor. The library profession is based on values like the preservation of humanity cultural heritage, a fair access to knowledge, intellectual freedom, confidentiality and the protection library users’ private lives, professional neutrality, tolerance etc. In Senegal as well as in the other African countries, libraries are, on the whole, legacies of colonialism. The values of library science were designed in a western perspective. This profession value system may sometimes conflict with the Senegalese librarians’ cultural value systems. However, very little is known on ways Senegalese professionals cope with these two value systems. This present research will describe and explore the interactive co-existence and adaptation of professional values within the cultural value system of Senegalese academic librarians. It seeks to answer the following research questions: (1) what is the Senegalese academic librarians’ dominant cultural value system? (2) How do Senegalese academic librarians prioritize their professional values? (3) How do Senegalese academic librarians adapt their professional values to cultural values? This exploratory and descriptive analysis combines a mixed methodology approach: Two types of data collecting methods have been used: a questionnaire based on interviews and on Schwartz’s Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ) (Schwartz, 2006) The findings highlight the fact that, on the cultural level, Senegalese academic librarians essentially emphasize, in the value system, the interests of the social group they belong to, the respect of social order and adoption of normative behavior in order to facilitate their relationships with the other group members. The values favor a strong integration of the individual into a group but do not encourage an action and thought autonomy which may destroy social harmony. On the professional level, they regard access to information, preservation and conservation of heritage and the denial of all sorts of discriminations as essential professional values. As professional values conflict with cultural norms, Senegalese academic librarians often seek a compromise, a balanced position to make decision which does not basically question their cultural values. When a compromise is impossible, the final decision is made in favour of cultural values. On the theoretical level, this research confirms the theory of a value system predominance rooted in Schwartz’ perspective of the “continuity/self-transcendence” (Schwartz, 2006, 1992). In his system, the dominant values are universalism, benevolence, tradition, conformity and security. These values favor the individual’s integration into a group, solidarity and family security and the refusal to undertake actions which may endanger group harmony. On the practical level, this research displays the necessity to reinforce professional socialization which includes ethics and values in the training of Senegalese academic librarians.

A Study of the Principals' and Teachers' Perceptions of the Effects of Collegial Approach to Implementing School Self-evaluation in Selected Hong Kong Schools

Leung, Lok-fung 08 August 2013 (has links)
ABSTRACT Starting in September 1997, the Hong Kong Education Commission has adopted School Self-Evaluation as part of the framework of Quality Assurance Mechanism for promoting quality education culture in schools. Under a project initiated by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, some primary and secondary schools started to implement school self-evaluation in their school. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of this self-evaluation framework based on principals’ and teachers’ perception of these participating schools. The relationships among school self-evaluation, school cultural changes, teacher co-operative learning culture and principal leadership are also explored. Furthermore, this study examines whether other factors, such as school type, teacher gender, teacher ranking position, teachers’ year-of-teaching-career and Chinese cultural values, will affect the implementation of self-evaluation in schools. A mixed approach of methodology was adopted for this research work. The findings indicated that school self-evaluation can initiate teacher co-operative learning culture, which in turn effects cultural changes in these schools. Also, the above named components play specific roles in the school self-evaluation implementation – school cultural change process: teacher co-operative learning culture acts as mediator, school self-evaluation as moderator and principal leadership as change facilitator.

Bettega, Maria Lúcia 23 November 2007 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-05-19T17:36:43Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Maria Lucia Bettega.pdf: 391767 bytes, checksum: 9630a90521b8f19583901de64e30c46f (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-05-19T17:36:43Z (GMT). When narrating their memories, the inhabitants of this community bring to discussion the experiences lived in the wedding rite and the meanings that they represented in their lives. The richness of this qualitative study sustains itself in the possibility of deeply knowing these experiences, analyzing the cultural aspects which they organize themselves in and what they represent for their maintenance. The research uses ethnography as methodological basis and the semi-structured narrative interview as the data gathering technique. The sample is intentional consisting of thirty interviewees from three distinct generations. The subject selection criteria to take part in the research were: marital status, residence at the place of research, age and gender. Based on these variables, three interviewee groups were created divided by distinct ages in order to distinguish the generations. The theoretical referential used enabled the analysis of this community`s culture through Van Gennep, Turner, Segalen and DaMatta works, and to identify the rite of passage stages and the values inserted in this rite at the community. This way the study around these narratives contributed to show that this rite maintains itself in the community as part of the culture and social values that constitute its culutural identity. The study even demonstrates that the rites are products of social forces and that they maintain themselves alive despite the speed at which the society develops.
