The influence of Biblical teaching and church participation on marital commitment and adjustment of evangelical couples of Filipinas with North American caucasian husbands

Pfeil, Lan Moy 30 November 2006 (has links)
This study is on the influence of Biblical teaching and church participation on marital commitment and adjustment of Evangelical intercultural couples of Filipinas with North American Caucasian husbands. The project is based on literature research and fieldwork. Consideration was given to literature on intercultural marriage, Biblical theology on intercultural marriage, and on pertinent Philippine and North American mainstream cultural values. The sample in the field research consists of 23 couples. Each spouse was interviewed by phone for one hour. Thus, 46 one-hour interviews were conducted that included assessment of demographic and church activity data; levels of the couples' marital commitment and adjustment, and a personal interview. The study found that Biblical teaching functioned as a constraining force against divorce, as the principle for unconditional sacrificial love, and as a guiding principle in dealing with differences and adjustments. It was the foundation on which the couples attempted to establish common values for their marriage life. Joint church participation that is adequate gave them a sense of extended family; a sense of being rooted and belonging together as a couple and their children; and spiritual nurture. It helped establish a common Evangelical Christian identity, regardless of their diverse cultures or previous religious backgrounds. The study also points to potential improvements for churches in ministering to intercultural couples. / PRACTICAL THEOLOGY / DTH (PRACTICAL THEOLOGY)

Bergeron, Julie 06 1900 (has links)
While suburbs are being transformed at an alarming rate, under the pressures of the Real estate industry’s development strategies, social concerns regarding the quality of life and the resulting landscapes are currently on the rise. With these challenges to bear, stakeholders usually employ solutions from an "expert" perspective that remain impervious to existing social conditions and demands. Given the lack of knowledge from the citizens’ perspectives, there is an urgent need for developing novel methods that are capable of bringing forth this local knowledge. A survey conducted in fall 2009 with residents of Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, on the south shore of Montreal, revealed the strength of an under-used and innovative method: the go-along. This method has demonstrated a particularly interesting technique to grasp the way dwellers qualify, imagine, value and move through their locality. Allowing privileged access to biographies and giving rise to improvised paths, the method has enabled placed-based narratives and has lead to an opening for expressing concerns, valuations and aspirations of citizens towards their community. In doing so, landscapes shift from expert evaluation to a dynamic scene where significant fragments of individual stories are told in relation to the experience of places in the everyday life. The study results conclude that the residents’ narratives and knowledge are undeniably rich and relevant to comprehending collective landscape issues and values. The existing logics and processes behind suburban landscape transformations would highly benefit from the collective wealth of dwellers’ extensive, situated and complex knowledge of the city’s geography, politics, economy and sociology. Furthermore, it can lead way to community participatory projects engaging multiple actors within a collective multifaceted reflection on the future of suburbs and the actions that should be taken towards a better future.

Culture d'entreprise occidentale et culture nationale gabonaise : effets sur les valeurs culturelles au travail, les stratégies de négociation, l’engagement au travail et les risques psychosociaux / Western corporate culture and Gabonese national culture : effects on workplace cultural values, the negociation strategies, work engagement and psychosocial risks

Pambo, Nadie Judicaëlle 21 November 2018 (has links)
This dissertation studies Western corporate culture and Gabonese national culture, as determinants of workplace cultural values, negociation strategies, workplace engagement, and psychosocial risks (absenteeism, and presenteeism).Quantitative and qualitative date were collected among Gabonese workers of western corporate.Overall, national culture and Western corporate culture different. Workers who support their national culture are less exposed to Western culture. Gabonese embracing Western culture are less tempted to support their national culture. The choice of one culture depends on their individual values, and on their negociation strategies. Moreover, Western corporate culture affects negatively absenteesism, and positively workplace engagement. However, it has some risks as it influences directly and indirectly presenteeism via workplace engagement. Finally, issues of interculturality in professional environment remain recurrent. These problems lead to the deterioration of not only working conditions, but also the well-being of workers. The conflicts that are generated, are mostly mismanaged. They are worsened off because of misunderstanding due to different cultures.

Our main goal is to observe cultural changes in this fairy tale occurred in the Brazilian context. We expect to contribute to Brazilian studies of identity through discourse. The specific goals of this work are: to confront different Brazilian versions of the tale Sleeping Beauty to verify the differences that build the fairy tale; to examine social roles that appear in these versions; focus on cultural values that emerge from these social roles represented by the fairy tale s characters in each version, and, search for traces of the Brazilian people in those values. Each one of these goals depend on different contexts. Our methodological procedure consisted in analyzing the content of each version, by episodes, confronting them. The hypothesis that sustains this research is that fairy tales keep similarities to its original version and at the same time they bring changes related to the representation of cultural values attributed by the society to the characters, their roles and to the actions. This hypothesis showed to be adequate once the analysis of the different versions allowed us to realize Brazilian cultural values with historical background, based on an ecclesiastical discourse, with its moral beliefs that determine the functions of social institutions. It was possible also to observe cultural changes related to the characters characteristics, to their actions, their social roles and the interaction among characters. The analysis results indicate that the differences among the versions are influenced mainly by cultural values of the social and historical context that surround its production. The cultural values are dynamic and their change comes from the need to face new problems daily. The different versions of the fairy tale keep the same characters from the original but they come with different attributes and that gives a new signification to their social roles / Esta Dissertação está situada na área da Análise Crítica do Discurso e trata do exame de diferentes versões (original, traduzida, adaptada e recontada) do conto de fadas A bela adormecida , a fim de verificar as mudanças culturais em contemporaneidades diferentes da dinâmica cultural do brasileiro , de forma a contribuir para os estudos identitários brasileiros a partir do discurso.

Motivation, cultural values, learning processes, and learning in Chinese students

Ouyang, Li 01 August 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was: (a) to examine the predictive utility of the achievement goal and Student Approaches to Learning (SAL) frameworks for characterizing Chinese students’ motivation and achievement, and (b) to investigate how Confucian-heritage culture (CHC) may combine with achievement goals or SAL to generate different learning processes and outcomes and to promote optimal motivation. A questionnaire was conducted during a two-week period with over 700 first-year students who took both of the two courses—college English classes for non-English majors and advanced mathematics classes for science students—at a university in northern China. The questionnaire consisted of students’ self-reported demographic information and the instrument that was designed to measure: (a) goal orientations, (b) attitudes towards the specified CHC values, (c) SAL constructs, and (d) two variables widely used in research in this field—metacognitive strategy and school well-being. Exploratory factor analyses were conducted to examine the consistency of the extracted factor solutions with the four goal constructs postulated by the 2 x 2 conceptualization, the two SAL contructs posited by the SAL framework, and the five cultural value contructs derived from the literature review. Standard analysis procedures were used to calculate the reliability of the scales and to determine which items should be retained for further analyses. Then regression analyses were employed to examine the relationship of the goal orientation framework and SAL framework to cultural values, school well-being, metacognitive strategies, and grades. Results indicated that the 2 x 2 achievement goal framework was an appropriate model for characterizing the types of achievement goals these Chinese students pursued and for predicting a number of achievement-relevant processes and outcomes, as was the revised two-factor SAL framework for characterizing the different ways students approached their learning and for predicting these learning processes and outcomes. The results supported Chinese students’ multiple goal pursuit in an additive goal pattern, an interactive goal pattern, or a specialized goal pattern to promote their optimal motivation and achievement. The results also provided evidence that CHC values combined with achievement goals or SAL either in an additive or interactive pattern to facilitate Chinese students’ learning processes and outcomes. / Thesis (Master, Education) -- Queen's University, 2008-07-31 12:20:50.812

Svahn Garreau, Hélène January 2015 (has links)
There are approximately 1300 completely or partially preserved medieval churches in Sweden. Many of these have remains of kalkmåleri (mural paintings at least partially created in lime) from the 12th throughout the 17th century. This dissertation discusses the enactments that formed the revival of this kalkmåleri between 1850 and 1980, with a focus on restoration and conservation. The decorative and monumental paintings that were created at the same time are also discussed. The study is divided into two sections: one concentrates on the mural paintings and the networks that made their (re-)enactment possible, and the second is a case study that examines kalkmåleri in four medieval churches; Vendel and Ed north of Stockholm, and Floda and Vadsbro south of Stockholm. To come close to the paintings, an eclectic methodology with analysis of written and depicted sources, interviews, and studies in situ of the paintings through mapping and analysis of taken samples was designed. The objectives were to investigate the formation of kalkmåleri as phenomena, significant concepts, and conservation practices throughout time and space. Theoretical inspiration was taken from Actor-Network-Theory, critical discourse analysis, and speculative realism. Throughout the study the kalkmåleri is thus seen to have agency. The weave of enactments stemming from different professions and thought collectives that formed the paintings was made visible by following the actors. Some of these enactments were analyzed: i.e. the aesthetic shaping of the room, as religious and iconographic images, historical documents, art, style, technical, or hybrid objects. The latter refers to conservation that did not entirely rely on science, humanist scholarship, craftsmanship, or artistic creativity. Thus conservation is seen as a hybrid activity. Three periods of conservation principles were explored: stylistic restoration, original conservation, and precautionary conservation, which were related to what was perceived as the authentic original. Furthermore some Swedish "traditions" are discussed: that no institute for technical studies of art was formed, the use of "Curman’s principles", restricted retouching from the 1960s onward, and the use of gomma pane for cleaning. Finally appendices are included containing terminology, an index of conservators, and a DVD with mapping, chemical analysis, and photographs. /

來源國,廣告訴求,文化價值觀:航空公司廣告在台灣的內容分析法研究 / Examining the Relationship between Country of Origin, Appeals, and Cultural Values in Advertising: A Content Analysis Study of Airline Ads in Taiwan

Gulenok, Kateryna Unknown Date (has links)
Abstract The current study is a content analysis of airlines’ printed ads, exploring an intersection of country-of-origin (COO), advertising appeals (rational and emotional), and cultural values (Eastern or Western). The study focuses on airlines advertising to understand the role of COO and its interaction with ad appeals and cultural values. The goal of the study is to explore the ways in which airlines or service businesses (selling intangible products) communicate with consumers about the values and meanings in their advertising, especially since the market for travel services is growing and the airline industry is facing drastic competition. The statistical analysis showed clear consistent patterns in the use of COO and other advertising appeals: the ads that used COO are more likely to use emotional appeals and express more Eastern values. Adding to our understanding about the branding of airlines, the findings are in line with the literature that claimed emphasis on emotional aspects for service advertisements. Implications for practitioners are also discussed. Key words: airlines, country-of-origin, services, advertising appeals, cultural values, content analysis / Abstract The current study is a content analysis of airlines’ printed ads, exploring an intersection of country-of-origin (COO), advertising appeals (rational and emotional), and cultural values (Eastern or Western). 從跨文化傳播看兒童雙語教育---以文化價值觀為例 / A Cross-Cultural Perspective on Children's Bilingual Education:Taking Cultural Values as Examples

Chang, Ching-Yun Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is using a cross-cultural lens to investigate Taiwanese children’s experience with bilingual education, its effects on children cultural values, and other factors that should be taken into consideration in Taiwan’s current bilingual education system. This thesis will specifically answer the following: What are the motivations of children to study in a bilingual elementary school? What is the role of bilingual education in the development of children’s cultural values, attitudes, and knowledge? What are parents’ perceptions of bilingual education and how does it influence children in various ways? How does bilingual education shape the type of children’s learning experiences under social and familial circumstances? Interviews with ten students, their parents and two deans of the Washington Bilingual Elementary School were conducted. The results indicated that contrary to the main goal of a bilingual school, which is to broaden the international perspectives of students, the mother tongue is devalorized in bilingual classes. Children therefore perceive an uneven social representation of languages, which further influence their cultural identities. Moreover, some parents regard English proficiency as a representation of their high social-economic status. Under a parent’s influence, these children therefore perceive English as a superior language making Chinese inferior, which seriously influences the development of their cultural identities and ethnic attitudes. These cases indicate that the extent to which western values affect children’s cultural identities will significantly depend on the specific social, familial and educational circumstances which shape the bilingual experience. Finally, some suggestions to the institutions of bilingual education and to future research are proposed according to the results of this study.
