"Getting beyond" : SPIN magazine in the late 1980s

Bozelka, Kevin John January 2004 (has links)
The Eighties were a time in Western popular music that seemed to exist only by virtue of it coming after something else---namely, the 1960s counterculture and the punk rock of the 1970s. Inheriting both the failure of permanent cultural revolution and the intense cynicism that is punk's strongest legacy, youth cultures in the 1980s found it increasingly difficult to live in the present. This thesis labels this historical dilemma postmodern. It will show how SPIN magazine attempted to move past this dilemma in order to assert a unique identity for 1980s popular music and youth cultures. In particular, John Leland, a columnist for SPIN, appropriated a pop aesthetic as an identity marker and, in the process, questioned the supposed ineffectiveness of pop music for a political postmodernism. An analysis of Leland's writing uncovers what accounts of this era tend to ignore: the social function of postmodernism.

A typological and technological analysis of stone artefacts from the Magubike archaeological site, Iringa Region, southern Tanzania

Alexander, Katharine 11 1900 (has links)
Previous archaeological research in southern Tanzania has focused on Plio-Pleistocene sites documenting early hominid evolution, or alternatively, the late Holocene Later Stone Age and Iron Age sites documenting the transition from foraging to food production. However, recent surveys and test excavations conducted by Dr. Pamela Willoughby in Iringa have revealed the regions potential for also contributing to the study of the Middle Stone Age, the time period and technological system that coincides with the appearance of anatomically modern humans. Analysis of lithics recovered from two 1m2 test pits during 2006 test excavations at Magubike rockshelter demonstrate the site contains sequences yielding Middle Stone Age, Later Stone Age, and Iron Age materials. Michael Mehlmans lithic typology is used to place the lithics within a relative cultural historical context. Further analysis documents patterns and intensity of lithic reduction, raw material utilization, and other aspects of lithic production at Magubike throughout time.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 1656718 bytes, checksum: 72173d4957ea10f577c37272ec9fe3cf (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-08-26 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Through the growing number of works of historical content written by journalists, accompanied by a significant rate of sales in the Brazilian publishing market, this paper proposes a case study having as object the book 1808 - As a mad queen, a prince and a nervous corrupt court deceived Napoleon and changed the history of Portugal and Brazil, the journalist Laurentino Gomes. As in the production of this type parameter are historiographical works and procedures aimed to understand how an author who has no historical training develops your "mechanics" of production, ie, a method of writing, the "handle" works of historians and extract these elements to the disclosure of their interpretations and construction of his narrative about the past, whose intention goes through the configuration of a palatable and attractive text about what happened. It is perceived that such production provides a fine line between history and journalism, to use elements from both camps. In this dissertation, raised the hypothesis that the work of Laurentino Gomes can be understood as a product of historical culture, when considering that revisiting the past is not an exclusivity of the historian. Although books like this said journalist contributing to the popularization of historical knowledge, not always depict plausibly, ie without anachronisms. Appears that 1808, to be "made-up" as a work of history, although its author emphasizes that this is journalism, brings the main epistemological implication of the fact to be taken by society as historiographical reference, as if the "make history "in the sense of institutionalized and metodizado knowledge was not restricted to the production of professional métier. Therefore, the practice of writing about the past can t historiographical legitimacy, but it is legitimized by the market-intakes and the social practices of reading, inserted in the cultural industry "past as a commodity."

In the second half of 1970, the magazines that published photonovels in Brazil were the second group in number of issues and distribution, among all the kinds of magazines circulating in the country at that time, overcome only by children cartoons, as Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. All the titles of photonovel magazines together reached, at the time, more than one million of issues printed and sold monthly. But even with such a number of readers, photonovels didn¿t deserve much attention from academic researchers. This work aims investigate this them from the theoretical perspective of Cultural History, with the purpose to build a determined memory of the photonovel reading, by interviewing its readers to learn about the reading practices associated to the appropriation of this kind of magazine / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutor em Educação

Confronting design: case studies in the design of ceramics in New Zealand

Thompson, Christopher Unknown Date (has links)
This study maps a way of looking at design history in New Zealand through the investigation of a taxon of industrially manufactured ceramics. Understanding design as an enfolded process of production, distribution, mediation and consumption, three threshold moments are identified as occurring within the European settlement period: the internationalisation of commodity production and consumption; the emergence of import substitution; and the deregulation of the market. While production has formed an element in the design of ceramics in New Zealand, it is contended that greater significance lies in both the trade and the mediation of these commodities and in particular in the way these have influenced local consumer choice. Emerging from this study, a series of key binaries become apparent: between the metropolitan centre and the frontier; between state and business; and between the traditional and the progressive. Likewise, the positioning of design within the institutionalised sites of power-or its absence from them-has been a prime force both in the development of manufacturing industry and in determining the nature of the consumer market.
