Purpose – Evaluate the four popular communication methods to involve customers in the NPD process from customers’ perspective (In this thesis, the four chosen communication methods are: Quality Function Deployment, Prototype, Idea Generation Activities and Lead-user Involvement). Design/Methodology/Approach – This is a quantitative research which used questionnaire to collect data. The questionnaire form is distributed online to respondents. Findings – The findings show the comparison between the four communication methods. The differences are measured and analyzed using measurement system from Zaichkowsky (1985) including: Interests, Needs and Values. Research Limitations – This thesis face limitation regarding the chosen sample. In addition to that language is also one of the major obstacles. Managerial Implications – The findings provide companies with evaluation regarding option for communication method to increase customer involvement degree. Originality/Value – This research is unique in a way that the author filtered the four most popular communication methods based on reviewed articles then conducted an evaluation on these methods. The evaluation is performed based on customers’ perspective which has not been done before. This thesis provides a new perspective on how firms should look at customers’ involvement.

The Initial Deployment of Electric Vehicle Service Equipment : Case study: Green Highway Region, E14 from Sundsvall in Sweden to Trondheim in NorwayDaniali, Iran January 2015 (has links)
Abstract Electric Vehicles (EVs) are considered a more sustainable alternative vehicle because of their efficient electric motor when compared to internal combustion engines (ICE), and thus help to mitigate environmental problems and reduce fossil fuel dependency. In or-der to support drivers of plug-in hybrid electrical vehicles (PEVs), the installation and adequate distribution of Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE) is a major factor. The availability of EVSE is a vital requirement in order to charge the vehicle’s battery pack through connection to the electricity grid. This thesis evaluates the likely distribu-tion of a sufficient number of charging stations, measured as the demand of EVSE, for initial deployment in the E14 highway. This highway is also known as the Green High-way region, where a plan has been outlined with the aim to create a fleet of 15% EVs in the area by 2020.In order to model EVSE distribution, the first step was to complete a survey in 2012 on the population density and location of cities, along with the location of already estab-lished charging station locations on the Green Highway. The survey was done with ge-ography information survey (GIS) software. The second step was to create a map of the region. Based on the map, the initial estimate of EVSE locations on the Green Highway project plan was analyzed, as the third step. This was used as an initial analysis. The forth step was to use the location of current gasoline stations to provide as alternative pattern for the EVSE sites.It was observed that the network of gasoline stations correlates positively with population density. Through using these stations, the optimal location of the EVSEs was proposed. However, the model results do not provide for sufficient placement of EVSE sites where the population density is very low. In order to assess the different potential options, it was necessary to create analytical models in Arc-GIS, in which buffer zones were created with a variable size of 10, 15, 20 and 31 miles. This permitted allocation of a geographical area to estimate the optimum sites for charging stations. The resultsiiishowed that for a buffer zone of 10 miles, 28 charging stations were calculated, using buffer zone of 15 miles gives 18 stations, and a buffer zone of 20 miles results in 13 charging station sites. Notably, the estimate of the 20-mile buffer zone gives the same results as for the 50 km (31 miles) buffer zone for residential areas along E14. Therefore, the results show that the optimal design is to deploy 14 fast charging stations with three-phase DC, or 14 fast charging stations with three-phase AC, installed adjacent to the E14 road.

Optimal Deployment of Direction-finding SystemsKim, Suhwan 03 October 2013 (has links)
A direction-finding system with multiple direction finders (DFs) is a military intelligence system designed to detect the positions of transmitters of radio frequencies. This dissertation studies three decision problems associated with the direction-finding system.
The first part of this dissertation is to prescribe DF deployment to maximize the effectiveness with which transmitter positions are estimated in an area of interest (AOI). Three methods are presented to prescribe DF deployment. The first method uses Stansfield’s probability density function to compute objective function coefficients numerically. The second and the third employ surrogate measures of effectiveness as objective functions. The second method, like the first, involves complete enumerations; the third formulates the problem as an integer program and solves it with an efficient network-based label-setting algorithm. Our results show that the third method, which involved use of a surrogate measure as an objective function and an exact label-setting algorithm, is most effective.
The second part of this dissertation is to minimize the number of DFs to cover an AOI effectively, considering obstacles between DFs and transmitters. We formulate this problem as a partial set multicover problem in which at least -fraction of the likely transmitter positions must be covered, each by at least direction finders. We present greedy heuristics with random selection rules for the partial set multicover problem, estimating statistical bounds on unknown optimal values. Our results show that the greedy heuristic with column selection rule, which gives priority for selecting a column that advances more rows to k-coverage, performs best on the partial set multicover problems. Results also show that the heuristic with random row and column selection rules is the best of the heuristics with respect to statistical bounds.
The third part of this dissertation deals with the problem of deploying direction finders with the goal of maximizing the effectiveness with which transmitter positions can be estimated in an AOI while hedging against enemy threats. We present four formulations, considering the probability that a direction finder deployed at a location will survive enemy threats over the planning horizon (i.e., not be rendered inoperative by an attack). We formulate the first two as network flow problems and present an efficient label-setting algorithm. The third and the fourth use the well-known Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) risk measure to deal with the risk of being rendered inoperative by the enemy. Computational results show that risk-averse decision models tend to deploy some or all DFs in locations that are not close to the enemy to reduce risk. Results also show that a direction-finding system with 5 DFs provides improved survivability under enemy threats.

This process developed in this work, Strategy Optimization for the Allocation of Resources (SOAR), is a strategic planning methodology based off Integrated Product and Process Development and systems engineering techniques. Utilizing a top down approach, the process starts with the creation of the organization vision and its measures of effectiveness. These measures are prioritized based on their application to external world scenarios which will frame the future. The programs which will be used to accomplish this vision are identified by decomposing the problem. Information is gathered on the programs as to the application, cost, schedule, risk, and other pertinent information. The relationships between the levels of the hierarchy are mapped utilizing subject matter experts. These connections are then utilized to determine the overall benefit of the programs to the vision of the organization. Through a Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm a tradespace of potential program portfolios can be created amongst which the decision maker can allocate resources. The information and portfolios are presented to the decision maker through the use of a Decision Support System which collects and visualizes all the data in a single location. This methodology was tested utilizing a science and technology planning exercise conducted by the Unites States Navy. A thorough decomposition was defined and technology programs identified which had the potential to provide benefit to the vision. The prioritization of the top level capabilities was performed through the use of a rank ordering scheme and a previous naval application was used to demonstrate a cumulative voting scheme. Voting was performed utilizing the Nominal Group Technique to capture the relationships between the levels of the hierarchy. Interrelationships between the technologies were identified and a MOGA was utilized to optimize portfolios with respect to these constraints and information was placed in a DSS. This formulation allowed the decision makers to assess which portfolio could provide the greatest benefit to the Navy while still fitting within the funding profile.

Internet services play an increasingly important role in modern society. Mobile Internet, a fast-growing technology that combines the Internet with mobile devices, has recently become popular. It is predicted that the convergence between mobile networks and the Internet would become the next generation of network architecture, and mobile IPv6 is likely to emerge as the most efficient and cost-effective instrument to achieve "anywhere and anytime" fast Internet and resolve the problems of worldwide mobility management. This research project reviews mobile Internet competition and the market mix in New Zealand, both major players and minor players being involved. The researcher also investigates the requirements of the mobile Internet deployment model from two perspectives: the market and the consumers. Finally the connection between end user services (for example, mobile Internet) and convergence (for example, network convergence and technology convergence) are examined in the research study conducted.The researcher applies a multi-case study strategy to conduct the research project and interview is adopted as the major research technique in order to collect research data. Several organizations which deploy mobile Internet services in New Zealand are chosen as participants, with the aim of offering both personal insights and business views to the research questions and objectives.

units in South African consultancies. These consultancies endeavour to out‐license their
technology assets.
The enterprise engineering model is examined and the rules and boundaries of the
Cartesian space is used to derive further functionality (susceptibility, segmentation and
competence) from the various enterprise life cycles as measures for business expansion
of knowledge organisations.
The reader is presented with an overview of knowledge organisations, more specifically
consultancy enterprises and its unique challenges and business models. These firms
develop technology for specific market applications to assist them in solving industry
specific problems. These technologies are easily modularised and packaged and can be
transferred as technology assets to licensees.
The bulk of the dissertation deals with the process phases in externally leveraging
technology assets, with a focus on the intelligence phase of this process. The industrial
engineering approach provides a suitable mindset for understanding the complexity of
global strategy problems. Proposed global strategies are based on combinations of
geographic areas that become more desirable over time. Levels of aggregation are
defined, and the global eco‐socio‐political and economical systems are further
investigated. Approaches to global strategy management are investigated, and the PEST framework is
used in its broadest sense to conduct an external environmental analysis. Franchising as
a method of out‐licensing is proposed as a mode of entry into foreign markets.
The development of a decision support tool is supported by the generic system model
and more specifically principles from productivity management. Multiple criteria
decision modelling is discussed and efficiency and effectiveness are used as the
objective and subjective variables. The Brown‐Gibson model is used to calculate a
weighted evaluation, and the countries of the world are ranked according to these
outcomes.
Finally, a sensitivity analysis is conducted on the weighted evaluations providing the
reader with graphs indicating what the long and short term focus of consulting firms
should be regarding their out‐licensing endeavours on a macro environmental level.
In conclusion, this study expands the enterprise engineering model for knowledge
organisations (specifically consultancy enterprises) using analytical decision making
methods in determining global strategy with a focus on the external environmental
analysis.

Physical Fitness in Army National Guard Soldiers and Its Relationship on Utilization of Medical Resources During CombatJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: The effects of a long-term combat deployment on a soldier's physical fitness are not well understood. In active duty soldiers, combat deployment reduced physical fitness compared to pre-deployment status, but no similar research has been performed on Army National Guard soldiers. This study is the first to identify physical fitness changes in Arizona National Guard (AZNG) soldiers following deployment to a combat zone and to assess the relationships between physical fitness and non-combat injuries and illness (NCII). Sixty soldiers from the Arizona National Guard (AZNG) completed a battery of physical fitness tests prior to deployment and within 1-7 days of returning from a 12-month deployment to Iraq. Pre and post-deployment measures assessed body composition (Bod Pod), muscular strength (1RM bench press, back-squat), muscular endurance (push-up, sit-up), power (Wingate cycle test), cardiorespiratory fitness (treadmill run to VO2 peak), and flexibility (sit-and-reach, trunk extension, shoulder elevation). Post deployment, medical records were reviewed by a blinded researcher and inventoried for NCII that occurred during deployment. Data were analyzed for changes between pre and post-deployment physical fitness. Relationships between fitness and utilization of medical resources for NCII were then determined. Significant declines were noted in mean cardiorespiratory fitness (-10.8%) and trunk flexibility (-6.7%). Significant improvements were seen in mean level of fat mass (-11.1%), relative strength (bench press, 10.2%, back-squat 14.2%) and muscular endurance (push-up 16.4%, sit-up 11.0%). Significant (p < 0.05) negative correlations were detected between percentage change in fat mass and gastrointestinal visits (r = -0.37); sit-and-reach and lower extremity visits (r= -0.33); shoulder elevation and upper extremity visits (r= -0.36); and cardiorespiratory fitness and back visits (r= -0.31); as well as behavioral health visits (r= -0.28). Cardiorespiratory fitness changes were grouped into tertiles. Those who lost the greatest fitness had significantly greater number of NCII visits (8.0 v 3.1 v 2.6, p = .03). These data indicate a relationship between the decline in cardiorespiratory fitness and an overall increase in utilization of medical resources. The results may provide incentive to military leaders to ensure that soldiers maintain their cardiorespiratory fitness throughout the extent of their deployment. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Exercise and Wellness 2011
