How light becomes performance space

Olofsson, Emilia, Swahn, Ingrid January 2013 (has links)
This text is the result of our thesis we implemented during the sixth and final semester at Stage Production program at Malmö University. We raise questions and thoughts about the light, room and illuminate the role of the creative team. The aim of this work was to how we can, through light and lighting design, explore the creation of the room, how we define the room we worked in and how it is to be part production. We conclude that although the experience of light and space is individual, this it what makes it an interesting area.

Designer benzodiazepines gidazepam and desalkygidazepam (bromonordiazepam): What do we know?

Maskell, P.D., Wilson, G., Manchester, Kieran R. 26 January 2023 (has links)
Yes / Designer benzodiazepines are one of the primary new psychoactive substances (NPS) threats around the world, being found in large numbers in post-mortem, driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) and drug facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) cases. Even though when compared to many other NPS types, such as opioids and cathinones, there are relatively few designer benzodiazepines being monitored. Recently a new NPS benzodiazepine has been reported in Europe, the USA and Canada, desalkygidazepam, also known as bromonordiazepam. This substance is a metabolite of the pro-drug gidazepam, a drug licenced for use in Ukraine and Russia under the name Gidazepam IC®. In the paper we review what is currently known about the use, pharmacology and analytical detection of gidazepam, its metabolite desalkygidazepam, and their other possible metabolites.

Dietary Selenium in Cultured Hybrid Striped Bass

Cotter, Paul 26 September 2006 (has links)
As aquaculture continues to contribute high quality protein to a greater proportion of the worlds growing population, fish producers have been pressured to increase overall production. However, associated with elevated production is greater stress due to crowding, reduced water quality, and other factors. These stressors impact the health and welfare of the farmed animal which has become of increasing concern to a more environmentally aware and health conscious consumer. New strategies must therefore be developed and adopted by the aquaculture industry to counteract negative consumer perceptions of industrial fish production while also stabilizing the industry. Better nutrition may enhance disease resistance of farmed fish, while fillet accumulations of specific health-related nutrients may simultaneously add value to the final product. This thesis summarizes research undertaken in an effort to enhance the nutritional value of fish by increasing fillet levels of selenium (Se). In addition, various biomarkers of fish health (lysozyme, ceruloplasmin and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities), were examined to determine whether dietary Se supplementation had a positive impact upon fish immunocompetence. Moreover, the effect of vaccination was also examined using lysozyme and growth as indicators of fish performance. Hybrid striped bass (HSB), the fourth most valuable farmed fish and fifth in tonnage produced in the United States, were employed as a model animal. Se, an essential component of the antioxidant enzyme, glutathione peroxidase with many established health benefits was supplemented to HSB diets at various concentrations but was found to be without effect upon serum immune proteins or GSH-Px activity. This finding likely reflected the use of fishmeal within the dietary formulation, which possessed relatively high Se levels, together with sufficient storage of tissue Se within the experimental animals. Nevertheless, these studies determined that organic sources of Se were more efficiently accumulated in HSB muscle than traditional inorganic sources. A linear response occurred up to the highest dose used (3.2 mg kg⁻¹) over a 6 week study. Fillet Se accumulation (r²=0.95) proved to be a better indicator than the liver (r²=0.87).Se enhanced fish therefor appear to offer a route of entry for fish producers into the lucrative designer food market - especially since many hundreds of millions of people worldwide are believed to be Se-deficient. Studies undertaken with Se-deficient HSB confirmed findings from the aforementioned research and also indicate that Se-enhanced fillets might be produced using a finishing feed containing 1.5 mg Se kg⁻¹ 6-8 weeks prior to harvest. Accumulation of Se using this strategy resulted in a 100g portion of HSB fillets containing between 33-109 µg Se, amounting to a dietary intake of between 25-80 µg Se; a level that would satisfy present daily intake recommendations. Vaccination of HSB with a Streptococcus iniae oil-in-water vaccine was examined for its potential negative impacts upon HSB production performance. Vaccinated fish did not exhibit any significant reductions in growth but microarray studies revealed that together with many hundreds of genes, four immune-related genes were impacted by this procedure. This thesis discusses the results obtained with regard to their practical implications to the industry and welfare of cultured fish. / Master of Science

Development of an Instructional Design Framework to Guide the Design of Multi-Modal Learning Environments

McGowin, Brooke Lynn Marton 27 January 2022 (has links)
Although the instructional designer plays a role in the professional development of instructors in higher education, their perspectives are not explored as frequently compared to instructors and students in multi-modal research. Instructional designers need to keep up with the emerging technologies and changing educational landscape in order to equip instructors with the skills and knowledge they need to create meaningful learning experiences. One way to help instructional designers be able to help guide and support instructors is by creating guiding frameworks that help a designer think through the process and considerations when creating learning environments such as multi-modal. Using a design and development study, a guiding framework was constructed and operationalized using the design phase of the ADDIE model. / Doctor of Philosophy / Although the instructional designer plays a role in the professional development of instructors in higher education, their perspectives are not explored as frequently compared to instructors and students in multi-modal research. The term multi-modal refers to learning environments that take place across multiple modes. For instance, blended or hybrid learning environments. This study conducted a design and development study which involved an analysis of literature and other resources to inform the development of the guiding framework. This study sought to address the practical needs of instructional designers in higher education through the creation of a framework that helps ensure they address key aspects in the design of multi-modal learning environments (i.e., blended or hybrid). The framework is grounded in theory and informed by an analysis of the literature. In order to validate the framework, an expert review panel of three was recruited to provide their insight and expertise. The feedback data was analyzed and the framework was enhanced based on the feedback. the framework helps contribute to the field by providing well-informed guidance in how to effectively design multi-modal environments. When instructional designers can effectively do this, they improve their practice which translates into the curriculum as well as the instructors who work closely with instructional designers. Overall, this can improve student outcomes.

Deciphering and modulating G protein signalling in C. elegans using the DREADD technology

Prömel, Simone, Fiedler, Franziska, Binder, Claudia, Winkler, Jana, Schöneberg, Torsten, Thor, Doreen 28 July 2016 (has links) (PDF)
G-protein signalling is an evolutionary conserved concept highlighting its fundamental impact on developmental and functional processes. Studies on the effects of G protein signals on tissues as well as an entire organism are often conducted in Caenorhabditis elegans. To understand and control dynamics and kinetics of the processes involved, pharmacological modulation of specific G protein pathways would be advantageous, but is difficult due to a lack in accessibility and regulation. To provide this option, we designed G protein-coupled receptor-based designer receptors (DREADDs) for C. elegans. Initially described in mammalian systems, these modified muscarinic acetylcholine receptors are activated by the inert drug clozapine N-oxide, but not by their endogenous agonists. We report a novel C. elegans-specific DREADD, functionally expressed and specifically activating Gq-protein signalling in vitro and in vivo which we used for modulating mating behaviour. Therefore, this novel designer receptor demonstrates the possibility to pharmacologically control physiological functions in C. elegans.

This master's degree dissertation presents some insights about educational designer, a professional who works in the conception, implementation and management of educational projects that use the internet. The research focused on the attempt to identify the characteristics of the work developed by the educational designer, its profile and the main competencies that must guide such work. In order to develop this paper, we mentioned authors whose research is about educational design issues, in addition to those who are focused on the use of multimedia resources towards online education. In a qualitative field research, data collected from the discussion in a focal group with the educational designers who work at Senac São Paulo were used. From this group, the following categories emerged: multimedia resources and learning, educational designer‟s profile and educational designer‟s role. Result revealed there‟s still a lot of confusion between the role and the most qualified professional profile to work in this area, which seems to indicate the transitoriness of the professional and its main characteristics / O advento das novas tecnologias de informação e comunicação causou um impacto bastante representativo no mercado de trabalho e na forma como a educação é encarada, ampliando espaços e possibilidades de aprendizagem, o que fez com que muitos autores passassem a considerar a importância do design educacional. Desse grupo, emergiram as seguintes categorias: recursos multimídia e aprendizagem, perfil do designer educacional e papel do designer educacional. Os resultados revelaram que há ainda muita confusão entre o papel e o perfil profissional mais indicado para atuação nesta área, o que parece indicar a transitoriedade da profissão e de suas principais características

[en] AUTHORSHIP: CONCEPTS AND VALUES IN THE DESIGN FIELD / [pt] AUTORIA: CONCEITOS E VALORES NO CAMPO DO DESIGN

JULIANA ABUZAGLO ELIAS MARTINS 13 November 2018 (has links)
[en] This dissertation is aimed at reflecting the concept of author, the main values commonly related to it and how these concepts are present in the field of design. For this, at first, we sought to establish some definitions of what may mean or refer the terms author and design. In other words, we aim to point out what are some of the key terms usually related either to author or design. Thus, we can see that there are common values that are associated with both terms as creativity, individuality, creation and community. After that, we offer some examples of events occurring within the field of design where it can be verified the presence of these values, ie, examples that illustrate how the authorship is an important issue for the field of design. The examples are: the design signed, intellectual property and social design. After the examples, we propose to examine and discuss directly some of the values of authorship mentioned above, present in both settings as in the examples, they are: individuality, creation and creativity. Finally, we try to reflect on the possible reasons for the continuing of these values.
