This is due to the fact that this object shows whoever looks oneself in it an image as close to reality as it is possible. On the other hand, the mirror is also associated to mysticism and to the supernatural for it can magically duplicate one who looks into it. This ambiguous characteristic turns the mirror into an element that is fantastic in itself and places it in the central position of our discussion. Therefore, in this study, we analyze the texts In a Glass Darkly, by Agatha Christie, The Oval Portrait, by Edgar Allan Poe, and The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde, giving special attention to the study of the images and artificial representations of men: the mirror, as an ephemeral representation; and the portrait, as an attempt to eternize an ephemeral image. We also discuss themes such as jealousy, the double, and death in the several forms in which it appears in the texts: suicides, homicides, attempted murders, death in life (mourning, separation, and developmental phases) all of which are, somehow, related to the specular representations. The narrative resource of using a mirror to introduce the supernatural event, along with the theme of death in all the narratives we have studied, and the difficulty to place these texts within the pre-established genres led us to categorize them as being part of a hybrid genre that presents characteristics both of the fantastic and of the detective story which we have named fantastic-detective story / O espelho ? um objeto que sempre esteve carregado de diferentes simbologias, comumente ligadas ao autoconhecimento e ? verdade, devido ao fato de mostrar, a quem se olha nele, uma imagem t?o pr?xima da real quanto poss?vel.

Romance policial, psicanálise e cultura contemporânea em Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza e Dennis Lehane / The detective novel, psychoanalysis and contemporary culture in Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza e Dennis Lehane

Fernanda Mara de Almeida Azevedo 05 March 2012 (has links)
This dissertation aims at outlining a comparative study between the contemporary detective novel and the psychoanalytical discourse in the fictional production by Luiz Alfredo Garcia Roza (1936- ) and Dennis Lahane (1966- ), approaching particular investigative methods in literature and psychoanalysis. To do so, the corpus consists of four novels altogether: O silêncio da chuva (1996) and Espinosa sem saída (2006) by the Brazilian writer and Sagrado [Sacred] (2004) and Paciente 67 [Shutter Island] (2005) by the American fictionist. The analysis on these narratives points out similarities and idiosyncrasies between two discourses within a conflictive and chaotic cultural environment. Moreover, it highlights this new social and cultural realm where characters with undefined identities (the detective, above all) strive to evade from the atmosphere in which they are set and search for the resolution of urban crimes. As lost subjectivities, these private eyes need to decipher psychic dysfunctions of every sort of criminal thence, the representation of the city, featuring sometimes as the ground on which investigators work for the law and, at other times, as a hiding space for murderers. The relation between detective and psychoanalytic discourses remarks the association between the obscurity of the literary text and our cultural background not to mention the overall discomfort triggered by changes in contemporary societies

The juvenile crime fiction as a teaching resource in science education.

Fabiana Rodrigues Santos 20 September 2013 (has links)
In this research we propose a guided didactic use of literature in science education from the use of a specific literary genre, the crime novel, in Scientific Research\'s teaching. The book O caso da borboleta Atíria was used as a model, written by Lucia Machado de Almeida, in which story is based in mystery and police investigation and is part of the publisher Ática, in Vaga Lume collection. The Literary that make up this collection are present in classrooms and school libraries since the seventies and are part of the repertoire of many students currently reading. Moreover, they are filled with content that permeate many areas of knowledge. One of the procedures used for analysis of the work was the use of semiotics of Greimas (1976) who seeks to establish syntactic relations within a text, and may help in a deeper interpretation work. We also conducted the analysis of discourse based in Maingueneau\'s theory (2006), which sets parameters that allow us to assess the main characteristics and the conditions of success for speech genres, studying the production process of the work, based on the social and culture contexts, showing elements to be considered in the process of teaching and learning related to the structure of the work and to the context in which it is embedded. With those analyses, we note that the work has a focus on to the search for knowledge through research, allowing the preparation of didactic proposals for the Scientific Research teaching. Thus, we elaborate didactic proposals using the book to approach scientific research in science teaching aimed at the elementary school. These proposals have been implemented in a school in the city of São Paulo in order to reshape and refine the proposals, enabling its use in different school contexts in an interdisciplinary way.

Fantasmas que investigam: nação, masculinidades, violência em A Varanda do Frangipani e O Filho da Mãe / Ghost who investigate: nation, masculinities, violence in A varanda do Frangipani and O filho da mãe

Edson Salviano Nery Pereira 29 January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation presents a comparative study that has as its main subject the novels \"A varanda do frangipani\" (2007), by Mia Couto, and \"O filho da mãe\" (2009), by Bernardo de Carvalho. Taking into account that both novels present themselves as narratives pertaining to the crime romance literary genre, the study analyses in which manner these romances present modalization and reestructuring in respect to the formal and structural aspects of the genre. From these findings, the investigation delves into the conflicts created by gender relations, emphasizing those found in the elaboration of masculine identities. At last, it is assessed in which manners violence is presented in these narratives, having as a principle that in them crime has been superseded by other demands.

The synthesis of this work is the resignification of the detective fiction in Roberto Bolaño's Los detectives salvajes. The starting point is the various texts of the author that have the figure of the detective in the entitlement, being this aspect only one of the many others that resort in bolañian work. Understanding that the huge network of relationships that exist in his texts is suggestive of his literary project, it will coherently be assumed a transtextual vision for analyzing the narrative: through Bolaño's critical texts, his general fiction and the history of the detective fiction, some interpretations shall be outlined for the perception of how new meanings of this genre can be attributed to Los detectives salvajes. To achieve this aim, it will be assumed a conjectural analysis, in a fragmentary level, and never totalizing / Mestrado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Mestra em Teoria e História Literária

The specificity of Simenon : on translating 'Maigret'

Taylor, Judith Louise January 2009 (has links)
The project examines how German- and English-speaking translators of selected Maigret novels by the Belgian crime writer Georges Simenon have dealt with cultural and linguistic specificity, with a view to shedding light on how culture and language translate. Following a survey of different theories of translation, an integrated theory is applied in order to highlight what Simenon’s translators have retained and lost from three selected source texts: Le Charretier de la Providence (1931), Les Mémoires de Maigret (1951) and Maigret et les braves gens (1961). The examination of issues of linguistic and cultural specificity is facilitated by application of an integrated theory of translation coupled with the methodology devised by Hervey, Higgins and Loughridge (1992, 1995 and 2002). In addition, consideration of paradigms of detective fiction across the three cultures involved, and Simenon’s biography and wider oeuvre, help elucidate the salient features of the selected source texts. In view of the translators’ decisions, strategies for minimising various types of translation loss are presented. While other studies of translation theory have examined literary and technical texts, this study breaks new ground by focussing specifically on the comparative analysis of detective fiction in translation.

Severská detektivka: Mezi kriminálním románem, společenskou kritikou a thrillerem / Scandinavian crime fiction: Detective novel, social critism and thriller

Danielková, Pavla January 2017 (has links)
The thesis presented here with deals with an analysis and genre definition of the Nordic detective story, which is currently very popular in the Czech Republic. It is namely an interpretation of the works done by two contemporary Nordic authors in question, i.e. Stieg Larsson and Jo Nesbø. With the first of the two authors I will be looking into the complete trilogy The Millenium containing volumes of Män som hatar kvinnor (2005), Flickan som lekte med elden (2006) and Luftslottet som sprängdes (2007). As regards in Nesbø's works, I have chosen a series of detective stories with detective Harry Hole as the main character, especially two of them Panserhjerte (2009) and Snømannen (2007) and which appear to be the most successful and the most typical. On the grounds of the analysis of the particular literary categories such as the character of a detective and their investigative techniques, the narrative pattern, the narrator, and the continuum which are compared with the similar categories within individual historical detective schools itemized in the theoretical part of the thesis, and compared as well with other genres, it is to be stated that the Nordic crime fiction might be located somewhere on the border line between the detective story, the critical social novel and the thriller, taking on at...

Phala, Ragosebo Salome 03 November 2006 (has links)
Foreshadowing and flashback are two techniques that look alike because they share certain features, namely repetition and experience. These two techniques nevertheless differ in many ways and this research study thus intends differentiating between the two. Existing descriptions of the two techniques provided by critics such as Irwin and Morson do not clearly indicate the differences between them. Terminology pertaining to foreshadowing and flashback is confusingly similar. This makes the identification of these techniques in literary texts difficult, and indeed no theorist explains clearly how to go about such an identification procedure. In order to achieve the aim of this research study, the descriptive, interpretive and comparative methods are used. In addition, an adapted narratological model is employed. In this model, a text is seen as having three levels, namely content, plot and style. In the analysis of content, the topic is emphasised, while theme and atmosphere are emphasised in plot and style analysis respectively. The concept 'technique' has been explained by placing emphasis on its functions and types. With regard to types, the emphasis is on structural techniques with the focus on the second level of a text, i.e the plot, because the two techniques under study, namely foreshadowing and flashback are part of the plot. Foreshadowing is described as a technique whereby an author uses details to suggest the ultimate outcome of the plot or to meaningfully precede the appearance of other details in a literary work. The functions and types of this technique are explained. Forms of this technique include knucklebones, dreams, language, character's name, shadow, conscience, beliefs, etc. Flashback is defined as the author's interruption of the chronological sequence of events in a work of literature. The importance of this technique is also emphasised. The different types of flashback are (a) external retrospection, (b) internal retrospection, and (c) mixed retrospection. A problem with regard to the types of this technique is the fact that not all types have been identified in existing research. This study has thus added two more types of flashback, namely (a) events that have been complicated and (b) events made similar to one another. There are two ways of complicating events, namely (a) changing the chronological order of events and (b) inserting events. Differences between the above-mentioned techniques that have not received attention from theorists are identified as follows in this study:

In the case of foreshadowing, an unusual event appears, while in flashback, a known event is encountered, i.e. a common, everyday event. With foreshadowing, the event itself seems to be amazing.

In the case of flashback, however, the event may not seem amazing in itself at first, but only causes suprise later when the reader realises that his notion of what has happened and what he thinks he has understood so far is undermined.

Foreshadowing whets the reader's interest, while this does not happen in the case of flashback. Foreshadowing emphasises coming events. Flashback on the other hand reveals the origin of the problem.
The application of foreshadowing has been analysed by examining its forms in various Sepedi literary works. On the other hand, the application of flashback has been analysed by investigating the use of its different types rather than its forms. In the concluding chapter, the relationship between flashback and the structure of a detective narrative has been looked into. It has been realised that there is a relation between the two concerning (a) the secret and (b) the revelation/unveiling of the secret. / Thesis (DLitt (African Languages))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / African Languages / unrestricted

Three Postmodern Detectives Teetering on the Brink of Madness in Paul Auster´s New York Trilogy : A Comparison of the Detectives from a Postmodernist and an Autobiographical Perspective

Sondén, Björn January 2020 (has links)
As the title suggests, this essay is a postmodern and autobiographical analysis of the three detectives in Paul Auster´s widely acclaimed 1987 novel The New York Trilogy. The focus of this study is centred on a comparison between the three detectives, but also on tracking when and why the detectives devolve into madness. Moreover, it links their descent into madness to the postmodern condition. In postmodernity with its’ incredulity toward Metanarratives’ lives are shaped by chance rather than by causality. In addition, the traditional reliable tools of analysis and reason widely associated with the well-known literary detectives in the era of enlightenment, such as Sherlock Holmes or Dupin, are of little use. All of this is also aggravated by an unforgiving and painful never-ending postmodern present that leaves the detectives with little chance to catch their breath, recover their balance or sanity while being overwhelmed by their disruptive postmodern objects. Consequently, the three detectives are essentially all humiliated and stripped bare of their professional and personal identities with catastrophic results. Hence, if the three detectives start out with a reasonable confidence in their own abilities, their investigations lead them with no exceptions to a point where they are unable to distinguish reality from their postmodern paranoia and madness. And in the meantime, no crime is resolved and no social order restored. The autobiographical back drop of the three detectives and protagonists in the three novellas is the author´s own life in the late seventies and early eighties. In that sense the three protagonists all illustrate the parallel lives the author could have had, if chance and trivial every day decisions had not turned Auster´s life around, at certain critical junctures during the darkest moments of his life in connection with the painful divorce from his first wife.
