The Emergence and Evolvement of Detective Narrative in Taiwan during Japanese Ruling Period (1895-1945): A New Popular Genre

Lu, Chun-Yu Unknown Date (has links)
In my thesis on detective narrative in Taiwan under Japanese colonization, I focus on the emergence and evolvement of the new popular genre to clarify how people accept, adapt and appropriate the western-stemmed genre into local fiction. The era under Japanese colonization between 1895 and 1945 was a beginning of novelty and innovation; however, it was not the end of tradition and convention. Both cultures of late Qing China and late Meiji Japan, as well as western modern civilization introduced into Taiwan by China and Japan, all made colonial Taiwan an arena of modernity, coloniality and traditional values. I drew attention to popular literature and culture, another dimension different from the elite or high literature and was buried under the canonized discourse of resistance and decolonization in Taiwanese literary studies. The popular fiction in Taiwan reveals the subconsciousness hidden in the society at the turning point of modernization and colonization. First of all, I start my survey from the social and literary context of emergence of detective narrative in Taiwan by mentioning the formation of modern mass media in nineteenth century Taiwan as well as the literary tradition of Chinese and Japanese literature, Gongan fiction and crime fictions. This part helps me to clarify the literay field of the emergence of detective narrative. Secondly, I pinpoint three starting-points of the emergence of detective narrative: Japanese and Chinese detective fictions in newspapers in early Japanese colonization, the police procedural, as well as the translation and introduction of modern western detective fiction. Thirdly, I point out some milestones of fictionization of detective narrative in Taiwan, including the form of “translation-rewriting”, the collaboration of several writers, the chivalric novelization, the children’s stories and the parody of western detective convention. Finally, I examine the cultural visions in the emergence and evolvement of detective narrative in Taiwan during Japanese ruling period through three aspects: the writers, the texts and the readers’ aspects and explore the coloniality, modernity and the popularity of the new popular genre in Taiwan.

Personnages et stéréotypes dans les romans d’Alain Robbe-Grillet / Characters and stereotypes in the work of Robbe-Grillet

Jassim, Hassan 01 July 2010 (has links)
This thesis aims at investigating the presence of stereotypical characters in the work of Robbe-Grillet retrieved from the paralitterature. Stereotypes that will be discussed in this work are: the romantic loner, wandering the city, the vigilante crime, the detective, the killer, the trio of novels of the jealousy, the prostitute, the perverse voyeur, the stripper, and the storyteller. After this “exploration”, we reach the flowing conclusion: as a whole, the work of Robbe-Grillet is rooted in the stereotype. However, we will discover that this is not an apology for stereotype. But simply taking into account its action in contemporary culture and the role of the latter in the elaboration discourse of the work.

Blais, Catherine 08 1900 (has links)
The "locked room" concept, generally considered symbolic of detective fiction, has been used by many writers since the 19th century. Amongst the authors of the genre, it was integrated as a simple mechanism to generate a mental challenge for the reader (Thomas Narcejac, 1975). The concept became more complex with the advent of the Belle Époque. The "locked room", under Gaston Leroux’s influence, became the central place where crime and passion, public and private, reason and superstition meet, when filled with the perfume of a woman. In The Mystery of the Yellow Room (1907) and The Phantom of the Opera (1910), Gaston Leroux built his intrigues around atypical "locked rooms" with the intent of upending the codes of detective fiction. This research focuses on the elements through which a popular novel can break its commonly associated expectations, despite the use of a widely exploited pattern. Instead of being frozen in time, the "locked room" is always evolving ; influenced by the novels’ underlying generic hybridity, it acquires new meanings that distinguish it from its predecessors. By first focusing on the path of female bodies and their influence on the decor, and then on the way the "locked room" reuses components associated with literature from the 19th century, we will see how Leroux manages to break the walls of a place that has been considered as closed as a safe (Gaston Leroux, 1925).

La société argentine vue par la littérature policière « décennie infâme et postménémisme » / Argentinian society as seen through detective literature : “infamous decade and post-menemist crisis”

Stefanich, Fernando 04 December 2010 (has links)
The objective of this Thesis is to increase our knowledge of Argentinian society by a specific approach. We are convinced that detective literature is a metaphor of the contemporary society and that through its analysis we will arrive at a better understanding of it. Our work does not seek to give a comprehensive view of this literature but to confront literary production with two critical periods of Argentinian history: the Infamous Decade (1930-1943) and the post-Menemist crisis. Following the model created by Karl Marx (“The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoléon”) we have called them Tragedy and Farce. Our research shows the resonances between these two periods. Our research consists of a sociological approach. A sociohistorical reading of the literary texts brings us to review the whole of the twentieth century, from the modernistic precepts of the Age of Enlightenment to the hypermodernism of Gilles Lipovetsky or the liquid modernity of Zygmunt Bauman. We have organized our work according to three principal and indissociable elements: the city, the figure of the detective and the society; throughout these pages we have followed their evolution.

Reconnaissance des objets manufacturés dans des vidéos sous-marines / Recognition of man-made objects in underwater videos

Léonard, Isabelle 28 September 2012 (has links)
To avoid the underwater mine threat and to limit human interventions, navies use autonomous underwater vehicles. An underwater mine warfare mission is divided into four steps : object detection, classification, identification and neutralization. This PhD thesis proposes algorithmic solutions for the identification step done with a video camera. Thanks to the detection step, the identification vehicle knows approximately the object position. First, the vehicle has to detect and position this object exactly. Then it will be classified and identified. The underwater medium affects the images acquired with a video camera through absorption and scattering. The first step of our algorithm is to preprocess the images to help the detection and recognition (classification and identification) steps. We have proposed two detection methods. The first one consists in modifying image spectrum in order to obtain an image in which we will be able to detect edges of objects. The second method, based on region segmentation, has been developed from background subtraction methods. The background image has been learned at the beginning of the video when there is no object. The results of the latter have been compared to those obtained with a state-of-art method, on data acquired at sea. Once we have detected an object, we want to recognize it. For that, we use the correlation technique. The reference images have been obtained from 3D computer generated images of mines. This novel approach gives promising results. For each developed method, we have optimized the results through the use of navigational information. Indeed, depending on vehicle's motion, we can set constraints to improve the detection step and reduce processing time.

Kriminální a dobrodružné motivy v románech Pavla Kohouta / Criminal and Adventure Motives in Pavel Kohout's Novels

Horáčková, Kristýna January 2012 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with analysis of Pavel Kohout's Novels, which were formed in the period of seventies to the nineties. This analysis is focused especially on observation of criminal and detective motifs in novels Katyně, Kde je zakopán pes, Hodina tance a lásky and Hvězdná hodina vrahů. Due to the close interconnection of works and their author, the first part deals with the life of the writer, and emphasis is put on the period after the year 1968. The thesis also deals with the topic of criminal literature, with its development and with definition of rules, which could be found out within this kind of literature. Our intention is to analyze individual works in the terms of particular motifs and methods, which appears in Pavel Kohout's novels. The roles of the main characters and their action in connection with crime are analyzed in particular works. We also observe to what extent are the works influenced by rules and principles of criminal literature. To the characteristic feature of selected novels belongs especially the work with suspense and with reader's expectation. Key words: detective story, criminal literature, investigator, victim, motive, rules, expectation, perspective, composition, versatility

Investigating moral perversion in post-Independence Shona detective novels

Nenduva, Aphios 12 1900 (has links)
Text in English / The study unravels moral perversion in selected post-independence detective Shona novels. Moral perversion is a multi-faceted concept and the study focuses on corruption, sexual harassment, abuse of office, stealing, poaching and illegal manufacturing of intoxicating products as the key definers of moral perversion. Afrocentricity merged with Kawaida philosophy are the lenses used to pass critical judgements on the extent the selected literary practitioners portrayed literature rooted in the African ontological existence on moral perversion. Fictional works used as primary sources are Sajeni Chimedza (1984), Mutikitivha Dumbuzenene (1991), Munzwa mundove (1999) and Dandemutande, (1998). All the novels are set in the post-independence era in Zimbabwe when moral perversion is rife. The study is qualitative in nature and data was gathered using questionnaires and interviews from literary critics, publishers and novelists. Particular attention is paid on the causes of moral perversion, images of people in leadership positions and the implications of character assassination of leaders in relation to the development of purposeful literature. The study contends that moral insanity is an acknowledged problem in the post-independence era and novelists are portraying leaders as the chief culprits manning factionalism and unorthodox ways of acquiring resources at the expense of the majority of citizenry. Guided and informed by Afrocentricity, the study argues that novelists are raising pertinent issues although their views are myopic, simplistic and self-defeating because they are failing to see that the leaders are also victims who are victimizing other victims. Blaming the leadership on moral perversion ignoring the impact of colonialism, and neo-colonialism in shaping African personality creates more harm than good as this exonerates the imperialistic system of exploitation which impinges on African culture and personality. Therefore, the study argues that novelists erroneously blame individuals for the sins of a system. There is need to interrogate both external and internal factors to establish sustainable home-grown problem solving solutions to improve human condition and the development of functional literature in Africa. / African Languages / D. [en] CONVICTION ISN T TRUE: DETECTIVE NOVELS AND URBANITY EXPERIENCE / [pt] CERTEZA NÃO É VERDADE: ROMANCE POLICIAL E EXPERIÊNCIA URBANA

RENATA FERNANDES MAGDALENO 15 August 2007 (has links)
[en] In the end of 90 s the world observe a boom of detective stories. In the post-modernity the literary kinds of narratives were very used again and the mystery stories were a success in the publisher market, even in Brazil, country where this kind of narrative never developed. But the detective stories, in this period, started to present some differences. Not that the classic elements weren t there, but, nowadays, they discuss aspects of the contemporary society. This work will observe how this kind of literature thinks the society and talk about the city life at the same time. The books of Luiz Alfredo Garcia- Roza, with Espinosa detective as the protagonist, were privileged in this work. Theories about the life in the contemporary cities and how people react to the effects of this kind of life were articulated with the reading of the metropolis representations. This study shows how the beginning of the detective stories were related with the big transformations that society were living in those days. The cities never were just a stage setting for the detective and his investigation. This work discuss this kind of narrative in the pos-modernity and the late success in the brazilian publisher market. And, because the detective narrative was always so connected with the city, the study observed too how those stories are in internet.

Emerged in Europe in the 19th century, these two novel subgenres has achieved a prominent position in the literary scene. Since its genesis, both historical and detective novels deal with the question of the search for truth. The objective of this study is to detect how the enigma element, when combined with a historical narrative, reorganizes the belief in the official version of historical events. This study does a comparative analysis of two novels: Agosto, written by the Brazilian Rubem Fonseca, and Santa Evita, written by the Argentinian Tomás Eloy Martinez. Written in the 90's, both noveis look back to the 50's historical events and characters. The research recovers the criticism of both Fonseca and Martinez work, and then examines the long and traditional uneasy relations between literature and history, from Aristotle to Linda Hutcheon's historiographic metafiction. By addressing the origins and transformations of both historical and detective novels, this dissertation shows the evolutions of the subgenres and also puts into dialogue current studies of the hybrid detective-historical novel. The analysis of Agosto and~ Santa Evita, following the methodology of Comparative Literature, focuses specially on the different ways how both novels are constructed. The results demonstrate that the enigma element, when inserted into a historical narrative, contributes to a destabilization of the official report, through a multifaceted view. However, each author's different narrative strategies reveal distinct effects of this destabilization which are discussed in the present study / Este trabalho discute os efeitos da hibridização entre o romance histórico e o romance policial, sob a perspectiva da contemporaneidade latino-americana.

The juvenile crime fiction as a teaching resource in science education.

Santos, Fabiana Rodrigues 20 September 2013 (has links)
In this research we propose a guided didactic use of literature in science education from the use of a specific literary genre, the crime novel, in Scientific Research\'s teaching. The book O caso da borboleta Atíria was used as a model, written by Lucia Machado de Almeida, in which story is based in mystery and police investigation and is part of the publisher Ática, in Vaga Lume collection. The Literary that make up this collection are present in classrooms and school libraries since the seventies and are part of the repertoire of many students currently reading. Moreover, they are filled with content that permeate many areas of knowledge. One of the procedures used for analysis of the work was the use of semiotics of Greimas (1976) who seeks to establish syntactic relations within a text, and may help in a deeper interpretation work. We also conducted the analysis of discourse based in Maingueneau\'s theory (2006), which sets parameters that allow us to assess the main characteristics and the conditions of success for speech genres, studying the production process of the work, based on the social and culture contexts, showing elements to be considered in the process of teaching and learning related to the structure of the work and to the context in which it is embedded. With those analyses, we note that the work has a focus on to the search for knowledge through research, allowing the preparation of didactic proposals for the Scientific Research teaching. Thus, we elaborate didactic proposals using the book to approach scientific research in science teaching aimed at the elementary school. These proposals have been implemented in a school in the city of São Paulo in order to reshape and refine the proposals, enabling its use in different school contexts in an interdisciplinary way.
