”Detta drömmars sköte en slöja till ormars näste” : En studie av det intermediala berättandet i Vildhjartas konceptalbum Måsstaden under vatten / "Detta drömmars sköte en slöja till ormars näste" : A stydu of the intermedial narrative of the metal band Vildhjartas conceptalbum Måsstaden under vatten

Ringmyr, Felix January 2023 (has links)
This essay aims to investigate intermedial studies and to analyze the intermedial narrative that appears out of the cooperation between music, lyrics and song cover of the Swedish progressive djent metal band Vildhjarta. The narrative that appears out of the intermedial cooperation between the medias is then analyzed with literal studies and narratological concepts to put intermedial studies into a bigger context. This essay also explores different intertextual connections to other works of literature which shows is quite a lot. Since previous research about progressive metal and the band Vildhjarta is practically nonexistent research from the closely related genres of black metal and death metal have been applied to create a new base of previous research. The research in this essay concludes that Vildhjarta, in sometimes complex ways, use different medias to create and amplify the narrative and they also include a lot of different intertextual connections.

Kris, alienation och autenticitet i Lev Sestovs filosofi / Crisis, Alienation and Authenticity in Lev Shestov’s Philosophy

Eriksson, Lars Douglas January 2017 (has links)
In this study of Lev Shestov, the biographical method is used to explain his philosophy. The grave crisis or nervous breakdown Shestov went through caused a total transformation of his - convictions and values. It was probably this drama that led to his repudiation of the common life and traditional philosophy with its emphasis on reason, knowledge, and ethics in favour of an extreme individualism and religious transcendence. The aim of the dissertation is to examine, amongst the great number of philosophers and writers Shestov analysed, mainly those in his view “marginal thinkers”, who were of the greatest interest to him – Fyodor Dostoevsky, Lev Tolstoy, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Luther, and Søren Kierkegaard. On the basis of this analysis the character of Shestov’s philosophy is defined. According to Shestov, like his own crisis, the crises that these thinkers experienced occasioned a total transformation of their convictions and values. Šestov does not let his life find complete expression in his philosophy. Instead he projects his crisis into the five thinkers’ crises and philosophy. To characterize the previous and new modes of thinking, the concepts of alienation (degeneration, degradation, depravity) and authenticity (deliverance from alienation) are used. Shestov’s judgment of the consistency of the five thinkers’ new attitudes is presented, i.e. deliverance from the common life with its emphasis on rational eternal truths and moralism. Authentic life is in Shestov’s opinion the from the individual’s everyday life concealed experience of despair in extreme situations. This constitutes a grave crisis that leads to the repudiation of all hitherto held convictions and cherished hopes. The contrast between the Russian philosopher’s personal, (after his crisis) mainly tranquil, harmonious life and his philosophy is glaring. Analyzing the five thinkers, Shestov finds that they did not persevere with their new convictions, instead they complied with the by everybody accepted and everywhere valid truths. Shestov’s “theoretical”, uncompromising and consistent stance on one side and the lack of these characteristics with the aforementioned thinkers on the other side, to a great extent places Shestov in another category than these. In Shestov’s view freedom is in the region of tragedy, which nobody enters on his own will and in the incomprehensible trust in a capricious, “inhuman” God. According to Shestov, only the philosopher, who derives his thinking from a situation, where he experiences extreme despair and hopelessness, can claim to be a true philosopher. /
Examinator: docent Julie Hansen; Uppsala universitet

"The Grey Sky Lowers" : The Uncanny in Five of Sylvia Plath's Poems

Stenskär, Eva January 2022 (has links)
This thesis investigates the uncanny (das Unheimliche) in five of Sylvia Plath’s 1962 poems: “Berck-Plage”, “The Arrival of the Bee Box”, “Daddy”, “Fever 103°”, and “Death & Co.”. Furthermore, it looks at how the biographical circumstances in which the poet found herself while writing the poems, may have influenced them. Drawing mainly on Sigmund Freud’s 1919 essay “The Uncanny” and the 2003 The Uncanny by Nicholas Royle, this thesis examines a variety of elements in Plath’s poems including, but not limited to, the beach as a liminal space, aposiopesis as intellectual uncertainty and as an example of l’écriture féminine, thresholds in the form of windows, shoes, and locked boxes, severed limbs as examples of Viktor Shklovsky’s defamiliarization, Latin as a heimlich/unheimlich language, the uncanny effect of darkness, silence, and solitude, the double as a harbinger of death, the wish to both include and exclude the specter and that which is strange, and breathlessness and euphoria as manifestations of madness. Furthermore, it examines hitherto unexplored potential influences on Plath’s poetry, including but not limited to, the writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Thérèse of Lisieux, Franz Kafka, and Knut Hamsun. Because of the ambiguity of the concept of the uncanny, this thesis incorporates a host of material such as taped interviews conducted by Harriet Rosenstein, Subha Mukherji’s Thinking on Thresholds, Julia Kristeva’s Strangers to Ourselves, and Jacques Derrida’s Specters of Marx. In conclusion, this thesis argues that the uncanny is an instrumental key to the comprehension of Plath’s late poetry.

Detection of driver sleepiness during daylight and darkness

Eklind, Johanna, Meyerson, Amanda January 2023 (has links)
Driving sleepiness is a serious problem worldwide. It is of interest to develop reliable sleepiness detection systems to implement in vehicles, and for such a system both physi-ological data and driver performance data can be used. The reasons for driver sleepiness can be many, where an interesting factor to consider is the light condition of the environment, specifically daylight and darkness. Daylight and darkness has shown to affect human sleepiness in general and it is therefore of importance to investigate the effect of it on driver sleepiness independent of other factors. This thesis aimed to investigate whether light condition is a parameter that should be considered when developing a sleepiness detection system in a vehicle. This was done by investigating if the course of sleepiness would be affected by daylight and darkness, and if adding light condition information as a parameter to a classification model improved the performance of the sleepiness classification. To achieve this, the study was based upon data collected from driving simulator tests conducted by the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI). Test subjects drove in simulated daylight and darkness during both daytime while rested and nighttime while sleep-deprived. An exploratory and statistical analysis was conducted of several sleepiness indicators extracted from physio-logical data and simulator data. Three different classification models were implemented. The indicators pointed to a higher level of driver sleepiness during night compared to during day, as well as an increase with time on task. However, no clear trends pointed to daylight and darkness having affected the sleepiness of the driver. The classification models showed a marginal improvement when including light condition as a feature, however not large enough to draw any specific conclusion regarding the effect. The conclusion was that an effect of daylight and darkness on the course of driver sleepiness could not be seen in this thesis. The adding of light and dark as a feature did not significantly improve the classification models’ performances. In summary, further investigations of the effect of daylight and darkness in relation to driver sleepiness are needed.

The need for teaching the escatological gospel of both coming of Jesus Christ in the twenty - first century especially if we see the day of his Parousia approaching

Hebert, David K. 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis is designed to outline the systematic-theological and theological-historical basis for the Eschatological Gospel of Both Comings of Jesus Christ (Yeshua Ha Mashiach). This cohesively combines Jesus‘ First Coming (for redemption, reconciliation and restoration) with His Second Coming (for the Rapture/Resurrection of the Church/Body of Christ and judgment at the Day of the Lord/Yahweh) into the complete salvation of the Church. The historical writings of the Patristic, Ante- and Post-Nicene Fathers are examined to ensure the continuity of this Eschatological Gospel message being communicated through their writings to the Early Church. The remainder of Church history is examined to ensure the Eschatological Gospel continued to be communicated by the Church as a part of the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20. Then, in keeping with the eschatological prophetic intent of the Parable of the Wheat and Tares (Weeds) in Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43, of both the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan coexisting and growing until ―the end of the age,‖ the antithesis of the Eschatological Gospel is examined—Satan‘s plan of lies, deception and heresy throughout history, culminating with the explosion of activity since 1948. This satanic plan is described as being not only insidiously deceptive by recruiting converts to the kingdom of darkness in rebellion and opposition to the kingdom of God, but also as preparing the way for the End-time/Last Days‘ ten-nation confederacy to be led by the antichrist. Biblical chronology is used to trace the history of both the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness to the present day. Finally, the ―Signs of the Times‖ in modern history are examined, thereby showing the need for the Eschatological Gospel to be taught in the twenty-first century, especially as the day of the Lord Jesus Christ‘s Parousia rapidly approaches. / Systematic Theology and Theological Ethics / D.Th. Maurice Duplessis : mises en récit d'un personnage historique

Berthelot, Pierre 05 1900 (has links)
As the title indicates, the purpose of this thesis is to reflect on the narrativization of an historical figure. In order to analyse the evolution of the way we perceive an historical figure (Maurice Duplessis) and the time period to which he is commonly associated (the Great Darkness), this thesis will draw upon François Dosse’s theory on biography (Le pari biographique) and the narratives of three different authors. First, we will take a close look at Maurice Duplessis et son temps, the story of a king-like figure recounted in an admiring fashion, written by royalist historian and Charles Maurras disciple Robert Rumilly. Secondly, we will examine Duplessis, the great epic tale of an illustrious conservative’s battles, written by conservative businessman and historian Conrad Black. Lastly, we will analyse Duplessis, the TV drama written by Denys Arcand, a disciple of Quebec nationalist historian Maurice Séguin, presenting Maurice Duplessis as the tragic incarnation of the French-Canadian nation, cynical yet conscious of his people’s impossible historical and political destiny. To complete the analysis, this thesis will also rely on Paul Ricoeur’s theory on narrative identity, notably discussed in Oneself as Another, Time and Narrative and Memory, History, Forgetting, as well as Michel de Certeau’s theory on writing and narrativization of history in The Writing of History. Through the analysis of these biographies, this thesis will aim to show the evolution of the relationship to the collective memory as well as what distinguishes History from Fiction.
