Patienters rökvanor, deras motivation till rökavvänjning samt om de har blivit tillfrågade om sina rökvanor av tandvårdspersonal / Patients' smoking habits, their motivation to stop smoking and if they were asked about their smoking habits by the dental staff

Prekadini, Njomze, Beciri Haziri, Lindita January 2010 (has links)
The aim of the present study was to examine smoking behaviour and motivation for smoking cessation in patients at a dental clinic. Another aim was to examine if the patients had been asked by the dental staff regarding their smoking habits. Twenty-two patients from a student clinic and twenty-one patients from a Swedish Public Dental Service Clinic in southern of Sweden participated in the study. Participants consisted of eighteen women and twenty-five men. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire that was directed at smokers. The questionnaire was answered in connection with the visit to the dental hygienist. The patients smoked between eight and twelve cigarettes per day and had on average smoked between 5 -15 years. More than half of the patients started smoking because of pressure from friends. In the future the patients would consider quitting smoking to avoid oral health diseases. Most of the patients wanted to try without external aid. The general health and oral health was perceived as good, or very good by 43 respondents. The most common oral health problems were dry mouth, dark brown coating on the teeth and gingivitis. This survey shows that many of those who currently smoke started smoking because of their surroundings. Giving up smoking to avoid oral health diseases was very important / important to the respondents. The motivation for smoking cessation was different among the patients. It was difficult for many patients to stop smoking. The survey also showed that more dental hygienists than dentists asked their patients about smoking habits and informing them about smoking cessation.

Tandläkarstudenters kunskap gällande tandhygienistens kompetens : - En enkätstudie / Dental students knowledge about dental hygienists competence : - A questionnaire study

Kartal, Petra, Mavi, Miray January 2018 (has links)
Materialet bearbetades i SPSS. / Background: Dental hygienist profession plays a significant role in Swedish dentistry and works primarily with prevention/health promotion. Dentists and dental hygienist's professions complete each other, which makes co-operation necessary to obtain a safe care for the patient. The aim was to study dental students (semester 10) knowledge regarding dental hygienists competence. Method: A cross-sectional study with questionnaire as measuring instrument was performed. The sample consisted of dentistry students from Malmo- and Gothenburg’s University, with two respective three years of dental hygienist education. Variables were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Comparisons between institutions, through Chi2-test were performed in SPSS. The result was based on 51 (Malmo) respective 26 (Gothenburg) participants. Statistically significant differences occurred regarding questions of diagnosing pericoronitis, behavioral changes, removing sutures, working with temporomandibular disorders, bite-impressions and responsibility of radiographic equipment. Malmo had 39 participants and Gothenburg 18 that reported they had not received enough knowledge. The relationship between the students knowledge and dental hygienists’ length of education cannot be established. Conclusion: There is a knowledge about dental hygienist’s competence, but with some variation. Differences in knowledge exists between the institutions. The majority of participants felt that the education did not give them sufficient knowledge about the dental hygienist's competence.

Förebyggande tandvård för att främja oral hälsa hos äldre : - En registerstudie bland individer 65 till 70 år i Värmland / Preventive dental care to promote oral health in elderly : - A register-based study among individuals 65 to 70 year, in the Region of Värmland

Seleskog, Birgitta January 2020 (has links)
Introduction: Dental caries is one of the most common diseases worldwide with well-known risk factors. In order to maintain a good oral health, preventive dental care is an important part for elderly people and impacts on an individual´s quality of life. Dental caries can be prevented and treated with patient support, education and preventive dental care. Health promotion activities within dental care contributes to the individual’s well-being and reduces costs for the society.   Aim: The overall aim was to identify the occurrence and distribution of registered preventive dental care in relation to caries, among individuals aged 65 to 70 years resident in the county of Värmland in 2017.  Method: A cross-sectional register-based study of individual data (n= 2738) from 65 to 70-year-old individuals resident and dental examined, in the county of Värmland in 2017. Data was obtained from The Swedish Quality Registry for Caries and Periodontal Diseases (SKaPa) from years 2017 and 2018.  Results: Nearly three-quarters of the individuals had no caries conditions registered (72,1%). Secondary caries-conditions were about twice as common compared to primary caries, 684 and 291 registrations, respectively.  A total of 742 preventive-treatments and 3495 preventive disease-treatments were registered. “Non-invasive treatment” had the strongest association to individuals with caries conditions (OR 3,83; CI 3,04-4,83). The treatment “information when risk for disease” had the strongest association to individuals without caries conditions. The number of obtained preventive treatments were skewed and could vary from one up to nine treatments per individual. Conclusion; The results of this study indicate the importance of further studies of preventive dental care as a health promotion achievement to promote oral health among older individuals with dental caries disease. Behavioral medical prevention is underused and needs to be considered in preventive dental care in the future.

This study aims at investigating to which extent the professional training offered by the Technical Course in Dental Hygiene at the “Enfª Izabel dos Santos” School of Technical Training in Health (ETIS) contributes to the practice of dental care beyond the meaning of technical procedures and verifies if its former students also value the several dimensions of attention in dental health care in accordance to the principles established by the Publich Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde - SUS). This study initially discusses the different dimensions of health care, followed by a review of educational concepts with the presentation of the pedagogical fundaments proposed by ETIS. Lastly, this study presents the analysis of the data obtained through fieldwork. This study has a qualitative approach whose subject are students who graduated in Technical Training in Dental Hygiene in Nova Iguaçu from August 2006 and June 2007. The author of this study uses the “focus group” technique with semi-structured interviews with former students, as well as interviews with dentists, who are their supervisors, together with a bibliographic review on educational concepts, professional education and health care in order to build up theoretical reference. The data analysis was performed through Content Analysis in Theme Analysis. This study indicates that while ETIS contributes to the practice of care in an individual dimension, it seems to overlook some important political and social aspects, which suggests that more intense integrating work needs to be done in the social dimension in the training course offered by ETIS.

Tobacco Cessation Counseling Practices amongst Dental Hygienists in Central Texas

Murray, Lacy 01 August 2021 (has links)
Although tobacco cessation is an uphill battle for almost everyone who attempts to quit, it is important that dental hygienists do not assume that patients are not interested. Dental hygienists are in an ideal position to offer cessation help to their tobacco using patients. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the tobacco cessation practices among central Texas dental hygienists. Specifically, dental hygienists were asked about beliefs, motivation, and confidence with regard to their tobacco cessation practice. A positive significant, moderate, relationship was found between beliefs and confidence (r=0.647), beliefs and practices (r=0.704), knowledge and capability (r=0.579), motivation and capability (r=0.529), motivation and practice (r=0.605), and years of practice and capability (r=0.699). The mean confidence scores for hygienists with more than 20 years of experience differed from those with 1-5 years of experience (p=.003) and 6-10 years of experience (p=.025).
