Women in a leadership development context constructing a leadership identityNaidoo, Kerrina 11 1900 (has links)
Female managers in the mining industry face unique challenges not experienced by
their male counterparts. They need to perform identity work to overcome these barriers
successfully so that they can create a leadership identity. Leadership development
contexts may foster identity construction. To enhance employment equity in historically
male-dominated professions and environments, an understanding of women’s
leadership identity construction in leadership development contexts is beneficial.
The purpose of this research was to explore the identity work of female managers
working in a leadership development context in the mining industry, to determine how
they construct a leadership identity. This was an exploratory and descriptive qualitative
study conducted within the hermeneutic phenomenological research paradigm. A
purposive sample consisting of five women working in a mining company was used.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and data were analysed using the
phenomenological hermeneutical method. The main findings indicate that four main
identity bases influence how female managers in a leadership development context
create a leadership identity. These include: (i) the impact of life spheres, (ii) integrating
personal and professional roles, (iii) the role work facets play and (iv) the changing
self. Moreover, four leadership identity work strategies are used to counter the effects
of the identity bases. These are: (i) being guided by personal philosophies, (ii) balance
and negotiation between personal and professional lives, (iii) building relationships
both personally and professionally, and (iv) assuming ownership for careers and lives
using career management strategies. Based on these findings, a conceptual
framework was developed. The findings may guide organisations in developing and
implementing effective and well-informed policies, strategies and initiatives geared at
the attraction, retention, development and appropriate support of women who are or
who wish to be employed as female managers in the mining industry. This study
contributes to the knowledge base concerning female leadership in the mining industry
in South Africa. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M. Com. (Industrial and Organisational Psychology)

Previous issue date: 2007-02-28 / Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos / Based on an ecological perspective from a multifactorial analysis of the domestic
violence phenomenon and on theories that consider the importance of the Fairy-Tales in
the infantile emotional development, this research was proposed with a group of
children who were victims of domestic violence. The main objectives of this study
were: describing the impact of Fairy-Tales narratives at the emergence of latent
emotional contents from the playful sequential actions and from the verbalizations of
the participants; setting considerations on the context in which the child grows up from
an ecological view about the phenomenon and identifying elements that offer evidences
of contributions of a storytelling program and of playful activities for the emotional
development of children in a violence context. The research had a qualitative character,
being itself as a case study. Semi-structured interviews were done with the people who
took care of the children and with people legally in charge of them and interventions
with the group such as sessions of storytelling and symbolic activities took place. To
collect the data, the sessions were recorded on video and, as a complementary form of
register, a Field Diary was made. The interviews with the adults legally in charge of the
children were recorded on audio. To analyze and treat the data, a content and thematic
analysis system was used, being the texts and images dismembered in register units. As
theoretical basis, the researcher used the ecological theory of human development by
Urie Bronfenbrenner, taking into consideration the process of exchange that occur
inside and between the systems built by the individuals, and the psychoanalysis of the
understanding of the oral narratives impact at the emotional development of each child.
The results of the research pointed to the familiar microsystem (intergenerational
transmission), exosystem, mesosystem and macrosystem as risk factors to the
development of children and to the domestic violence installation. In relation to the
storytelling activities, the imaginary world was structured around the elements offered
by the tales, and, at the same time, it condensed some aspects of the child s life story.
The compiled data suggest that the oral narratives can act as a support, mixing in
themselves the elements repertory that awakes in children the contents related to the
personal experiences. These elements build the imaginary world and the playful actions,
providing, occasionally, the expression of the experienced violence / Baseando-se numa perspectiva ecológica a partir de uma análise multifatorial do
As
Enquanto
Estes elementos estruturam o
faz-de-conta e ações lúdicas, propiciando, ocasionalmente, a expressão da vivência da
violência sofrida

Information behaviour in health-care of home-based elderly people in Nakuru District, KenyaKhayesi, Marie K. (Marie Khanyanji) 07 1900 (has links)
This study investigated access and use of information in the health-care of home-based elderly people
(EPs) in Nakuru District, Kenya. The literature review revealed a gap with respect to information
behaviour in health-care of EPs in a development context. The researcher used qualitative methods;
with exploratory and descriptive research design because the focus of the study was on the littleknown
and socially disadvantaged community of EPs in Nakuru District. Respondents were sampled
by using the snowball technique. At the end of an interview session, each respondent was encouraged
to nominate someone who either shared the same or had different experiences, views, socio-economic
levels and gender. The researcher collected data through face-to-face interviews with EPs, informal
care providers (ICPs) and formal health-care providers (FHCPs), in order to gain insight of
information behaviour in health-care of EPs, by focusing on aspects of information needs; sources;
use of information and factors that influence the respective groups of respondents to access and use
health-care information health-care of EPs. The findings showed that the respective groups of
respondents had similar as well as diversified needs for information for health-care. The groups used
both formal and informal sources of information and channels of communication to access
information for health-care, with FHCPs using authoritative sources more than the EPs and ICPs.
Factors such as being a professional or a lay person, cost, ease of accessibility, availability of sources
and channels of communication, time and trustworthiness of a source or channel of communication
determined preference for use of information. The major contribution of the study is to the theory
about information behaviour: some EPs and ICPs used CAM services without informing FHCPs,
thereby revealing a form of concealed information use behaviour (CIUB). / Information Science / D. Litt. et Phil. (Information Science)

In spring 2020, an interdisciplinary and intersectoral team (including social work, medicine, and psychology) established the Clinique Mauve, an integrated service point for LGBTQI+ migrants persons in Montreal, Canada. Among the services offered is the outreach program, an innovative collective intervention project aimed at mitigating the impacts of the socio-health crisis on this population. In the context of this thesis, I am seeking to 1) document the experience undertaken and 2) determine the lessons that can be drawn from the use of collective intervention methodologies in a socio-health crisis context. To achieve this, I primarily employ two theoretical frameworks: Bourque et al.'s typology of collective intervention (2007) and Kirmayer et al.'s community resilience model (2009). My research approach aligns with two evaluative approaches: utilization-focused evaluation (Patton and Campbell-Patton, 2022) and descriptive evaluation in a development context (Marceau, 2022; Rey et al., 2022). The analysis of the results highlights the strengths and limitations of collective intervention, multilingual and culturally adapted intervention, and socio-economic and material support in the context of the COVID-19 socio-health crisis. It also reveals the numerous challenges encountered during the implementation of this experience in an extraordinary context. A series of recommendations for the leaders of the Clinique Mauve concludes this thesis.
