The influence of foreign ownership on cluster evolution: the case of the Stockholm – Uppsala life science cluster

Sungat, Ayan January 2012 (has links)
This thesis addresses the issue of cluster dynamics. The theoretical basis is the Porter’s diamond model of industrial clusters and the analysis pursued in the thesis considers the impact of foreign ownership on Porter’s determinants of successful cluster: factor conditions, demand conditions, supported industries and, finally, firms’ strategies and structures. According to Porter, sustainability of clusters is a function of its dynamics and propensity to change, which in turn depends on these four components of the national home base. The analysis is based on a comprehensive set of case studies conducted for the life science industrial cluster located in the Stockholm-Uppsala area. The results indicate that foreign ownership has positive effect on the dynamism of the cluster.

A Study on the Application of Regional Innovative Systems of the Southeast Asia to the Practice in Greater Kaohsiung Area

Hung, Po-Yu 11 July 2011 (has links)
Economic growth has virtually dropped to depression era levels in recent years as the domestic economy was and is still being impacted by severe competition in the international market. With the competition in the markets of most industries, how can we deal with the different stressful challenges to gain a dominant position in regard to competitiveness? There are numerous factors preventing many domestic traditional industries from being transformed, such as: the lack of innovative technical knowledge and competence, the limited necessary funds for manpower and equipment, the restriction of our government¡¦s subsidy clauses, etc. Accordingly, industry holders still keep and run their existing traditional industries, thereby raising obstacles to the promotion of the regional innovative system. The key point to solve the problem is to raise the knowledge technology level for the regional industry clusters. How can our government¡¦s policy help to assist the related industries to form the clusters and practice regional balanced development? The goal is to raise innovation in the necessary technologies; only then can an enterprise¡¦s business be sustained. According to the above, industry clusters constitute an important key to promote industrial development. The regional innovative system emphasizes the reactions and flow among organizations, including government, academia, research organizations, intermediaries, the financial market, the information network, etc. The thriving growth in the domestic economy relies much on the strengthening of innovation policies regarding urban areas. This research will discuss Chinese, Japanese and Korean governments¡¦ achievements in regard to the policies concerning regional innovations and management. The aims of the discussion include the following: 1. Investigating these 3 governments¡¦ successful cases of their innovation policies and strategies of industry clusters, in order to offer the greater Kaohsiung area a reference for practicing an innovative system; 2. Applying the results of the successful cases as suggestions for domestic traditional industries; and 3. Through integrated comparisons and analysis, substantial suggestions and measures for future development are proposed for the interaction between industry and academia, the enforcement of the administrative management regulations of the central and regional governments, the clustering strategies, etc. In addition, new energy, new materials and high technology industries are advised as a direction for the overall industrial development in the greater Kaohsiung area. Finally, the issues of industrial pollution of the environment, increasing the employment opportunities, and the cross-region and cross-nation innovative interactions are also explored.

Huang, Chao-An 02 August 2011 (has links)
The number of cable TV subscribers in Taiwan is nearly 6 million. According to all kinds of statistics, the popularity rate of cable TV should be over 80% if those who watch cable TV without paying are included. The rate is estimated to be higher in metropolitan areas. In recent years, the media industry in Taiwan has been rising and flourishing, especially TV media. Watching TV is the most frequently chosen activity for entertainment in Taiwan families. However, when cable TV system is used to receive, transfer, and transmit wireless and satellite TV, or is applied by using the bandwidth of cables, can ¡§Self-production cable channel¡¨ planned by Business Plan also play the role of the media in TV channels? Restricted by the area division of operating cable TV, the customers of cable TV system operators are community residents. The overall operation has a lot to do with the communities. Self-production cable channel is the local TV station. With emphasis on local cultures in Taiwan, does cable TV system plan the context for local cultures to be the text related to local life, culture and history, especially for southern Taiwan that is short of ¡§care¡¨ from TV media for a long time? Can ¡§Self-production cable channel¡¨ provide the locals with some media functions in suitable time and meet the requirements of communities? For cable TV system which is short of economies scale, what is the operation mode of ¡§Self-production cable channel¡¨? And what are the elements affecting developments? Most of the internal studies related to cable TV emphasize on exploring engineering technique, operation effect, business strategy, subscription fees, subscriber satisfaction, and channel plan, and so on. Studies related to Self-production cable channel are rarely seen. Thus, the three purposes for this study are as following: 1. Explore the role and function of Self-production cable channels. 2. Analyze the development model and elements affecting the development of Self-production cable channels. 3. Seek for the possibilities to creativity of Self-production cable channels and give suggestions. To explore the development model of Self-production cable channels in Kaohsiung city, this study uses data mining technique, interview survey, and case study, and the interviewees include officials, industries, experts and scholars, and community representatives. Besides, literature review, data collection, value chain theory, diamond model, and SWOT Analysis are also used to assist in analyzing. By analyzing Self-production cable channels in Kaohsiung city, 5 conclusions are generalized: 1. Self-production cable channels are defined as the local media, and it produces materials based on communities. 2. The system operator keeps working, but the support is limited. 3. The goals and missions for Self-production cable channels are various. 4. Crisis exists in self-approval and other-approval. 5. Overall marketing of Self-production cable channels is not active enough. According to the result, suggestions to Self-production cable channels are as following: 1. Clear Definition: Non-profit TV station 2. Human Resources: Core element of organization 3. Enhance the brand, content, service value: Key to the creative development 4. Government Policy: The strongest promoter

A Study on the Competition Strategies of Taiwan's Polarizer Enterprises

Tsai, Chi-hsun 12 August 2006 (has links)
Polarizers are key components of TFT-LCD panels. Because their production demands high technical know-how and the supply of their raw materials was under the control of Japanese companies, these companies used to have few competitors and enjoyed good profits. Recently, however, panels have been mass-produced. Since their investments that often amount to hundreds of billions of NT dollars, panel producers have undertaken vertical integration in order to reduce costs for production. In order also to avoid being limited by the shortage of TAC¡Xan important component of polarizers-- panel producers have been reaching into the polarizer industry one after another. It takes a relatively long time to be able to control the quality of polarizers and to produce a large amount of them. At the present time, the leading companies are Nitto Denko and Suwitomo in Japan, and Optimax in Taiwan. Though the new comers to the polarizer industry so far pose no big threat to these well-established companies, their joining in means a warring age has set in for the polarizer industry. And this study of mine tries to analyze what cutting edge Taiwan¡¦s polarize companies have over their competitors. To understand how cluster influences investments in and development of TFT-LCD industry, I study this industry in Taiwan. I use the Five ¡VForce Model and the Diamond Model proposed by Michael E. Porter to analyze the data. And then I study six polarizer companies in Taiwan, analyzing their developments and the turning points of their strategies. I hope I can make some contributions to the TFT-LCD industry in Taiwan. In my research, I find that this industry has become an oligopoly. The important factors that determine a company¡¦s competitiveness are its R&D abilities, manufacturing technology, and policies in forming strategic alliances. I also find that local Taiwanese companies do not have an advantage over those leading Japanese companies in either their R&D abilities or their access to raw materials. Their hopes of survival lie in the differentiation of their products and in forming good strategic alliances with their clients. The purposes of this thesis are four: (1) analyzing the polarizer industry in Taiwan and their competitiveness, (2) studying the key factors of their success or failure, (3) understanding why their CEOs decide to enter this industry, and (4) getting to know why they decide to leave this industry by being merged. My study has successfully fulfilled these purposes and in it are also several suggestions for the reference of those CEOs who are planning to enter this industry.

The study on the development drives and investment location determinants of multinational corporations ¡V Illustrated by the case of Want-Want group

Wang, Chen-I 17 March 2008 (has links)
Due to the unusual political and economic ties across the Strait, the trade between Taiwan and Mainland China, as two independent economic entities, can be regarded as special ¡§state-to-state¡¨ trade. Logically, Taiwanese enterprises, which have invested in Mainland China, can also be defined as special Multinational Corporates¡]MNC¡^. The utmost aims of international capital flows include lowering costs and exploiting new marketplaces. The mature industries in developed economies have been losing their competitive advantages in cost and marketing, while the developing economies are usually able to provide those MNCs with more potential markets and lower operation costs. Therefore, the enterprises in developed economies can alternatively keep their competitive edges by making use of cross-border operations and capital flows. Under the frameworks of International Product Life Cycle (IPLC) and the Diamond Model, the study aims to interpret the motivations of the capital flows and the investment location determinations among Taiwan and the economic regions in Mainland China. Want-Want group, denoted as a successful Taiwan firm in Mainland China, enjoys prosperous experiences in that market. The group categorized as food industry, which falls in the mature period of product life cycle in Taiwan. Hence, the study takes it as an example to illustrate the application of the IPLC theory in the Mainland China, and to interpret the investment local determinants by the conditions illustrated by the Diamond Model. The study has scrupulously examinated the history of Want-Want group investing at Taiwan and various economic regions in China. The findings are that when multinational corporations make foreign direct investments, the Product Life Cycle theory and Diamond Model theory can appropriately interpret the motivation and location selection respectively.

Hsu, Hui-Cheng 18 August 2008 (has links)
The Executive Yuan of Taiwan has launched many policies to encourage the county and city governments to develop their own different festivals. This new movement has pushed the festival industry, a new subsidiary industry of MICE, to a new phase of rapid growth. However, from 2005, the development of festivals in Taiwan has met some problems and hazards after a rapid growth in quantity and scale. It will be very helpful to enhance the quality and competitiveness and to develop the internationalization of Taiwan festivals if we can analyz and research the developing processs, key success factors and developing strategies of Taiwan festivals industry. A successful festival not only consists of good planning and execution but also the attractive and unique topic and content. Therefore, it will become an important topic for research on key success factors of Taiwan festivals. This research will focus on three different cases of festivals, Pingtung Bluefin Tuna Cultural Festival, Kaohsiung Lantern Festival and Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival. Some key success facets and factors of festivals will be analyzed by AHP(Analysis Hierarchy Process). The interviewees include festival industry corporations, governments and non-profit organazations. The quality analysis and AHP questionnaire has been used to analyze the key success factors and the key points of managing Taiwan festival. At last, this research also discussed the competitiveness of whole festival industry in Taiwan by using the tools of Diamond Model of Competitiveness of Michael Porter. We also summarized many experts¡¦ viewpoints to a six developing strategies, those are developing a systemic research on festivals, enforcing the planning and management of festivals, setting rules of festivals and festival organizations, promoting festival brands, enriching the interchanges of international zones, and enforcing variable marketing and promotions. Seven developing trends of internationalization, marketing, uniqueness, industrilization, variablization, centralization and regulationalization have also been presented. It will be very meaningful and helpful if some useful strategies and directions have been used from this research by the governments, corporations, and other parties that involved in the festival industry in Taiwan.
