Mattering Mediates Between Fairness and Well-being

Scarpa, M.P., Di Martino, Salvatore, Prilleltensky, I. 19 November 2021 (has links)
Yes / Research has suggested a fundamental connection between fairness and well-being at the individual, relational, and societal levels. Mattering is a multidimensional construct consisting of feeling valued by, and adding value to, self and others. Prior studies have attempted to connect mattering to both fairness and a variety of well-being outcomes. Based on these findings, we hypothesize that mattering acts as a mediator between fairness and well-being. This hypothesis was tested through Covariance-Based Structural Equation Modeling (CB-SEM) using multidimensional measures of fairness, mattering, and well-being. Results from a Latent Path Analysis conducted on a representative sample of 1,051U.S. adults provide support to our hypothesis by revealing a strong direct predictive effect of mattering onto well-being and a strong indirect effect of fairness onto well-being through mattering. Results also show that mattering is likely to fully mediate the relationship between fairness and multiple domains of well-being, except in one case, namely, economic well-being. These findings illustrate the value of a focus on mattering to understand the relationship between fairness and well-being and to provide future directions for theory, research, and practice. Theoretical implications for the experience of citizenship and participation, along with cross-cultural considerations, are also discussed. / Erwin and Barbara Mautner Endowed Chair in Community Well-Being at the University of Miami

Not Out of the Dark Night: Beyond Sanitized Theological Scenes of Instruction

Baldelomar, César "CJ" January 2024 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Hosffman Ospino / This work disrupts and re-envisions normative or traditional theological scenes of instruction anchored around imago Dei, dignity, and hope. These elements comprise “sanitized scenes of instruction” that are unable to adequately and creatively respond to the complex epistemes that have shaped and continue to guide contemporary death-dealing atmospheres of violence as manifested in necropolitics, biopower, and intensified precarity in the Anthropocene. The result is theological reflection, social analysis, and education that is out of touch with the perpetual dark night of the soul that we all experience but that is especially felt by those bodies considered disposable or as fodder for Orwellian visions of societal homeostasis (biopower) on an increasingly precarious Earth. Instead of providing easy chimeras or a quick way out, this work invites readers to rethink imago Dei, dignity, and hope without escaping the dark night (the atmospheres of violence). It does so by juxtaposing scenes, unsanitized ones, with traditional theological accounts on imago Dei, dignity, and hope––challenging them in the process. The hope is that such juxtapositions will jolt imaginations into considering other possible scenes of theological instruction that go beyond, but that do not discard, the normative ones. This work ends by offering some contours for a rhizomatic theological imagination and pedagogy that can perhaps facilitate an “active” sitting in the dark: one that still manages to move in all directions and that envisions infinite possibilities within states of suspension. The penultimate chapter hones in on the centrality of a theological hermeneutics that embraces plurality and ambiguity––crucial to any theological project that seeks to respond to complex contemporary concerns. The final chapter tentatively concludes with some possible fragments of scenes for consideration in developing future theological scenes of instruction. It models the pedagogy that I currently find most useful in my writing and teaching, namely a rhizomatic and pluriversal one. Rather than end the work with yet another system or scene of instruction, I offer the fragments as an exercise for the reader to think through his/her/their own experiences with theology and the precariousness that we all, to different extents, share. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2024. / Submitted to: Boston College. No. of bitstreams: 1 Marilda_Santos_2018.pdf: 1076398 bytes, checksum: 8adb4a848a5edbfe8c464bcc2feb525f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-06-08 / The aim of the research is to investigate the idea of human dignity in Immanuel Kant. It is based on an analysis of the conceptual ethical elements contained in the Fundamentation of the Metaphysics of Customs, in which Kant presents the formula of humanity, in it the concept of human dignity is constituted in the idea that human beings have an absolute value, as an end in itself. The relevance of research on the idea of human dignity is of fundamental importance in the social context and in the context of the law, however, it is opted to expose its problematic in the moral philosophical context. For this, it is necessary to examine the moral principle according to which man should act, verifying whether it is possible or not to understand this idea of human dignity as a law of freedom, justice and equality. The meticulous examination of these concepts is structured through Kant's argumentative logical exposition, systematizing the concepts of goodwill, duty and imperative, since they make it possible to think about the problem of study which is the formula of humanity. It is therefore a matter of understanding the conceptual framework that serves as a basis for justifying the concept of human dignity, in which it organizes and approaches the concepts of freedom, justice and equality, in order to do the reflexive exercise that establishes the connection between them, whose interest is in the understanding of the question of respect for humanity, with regard to the freedom of man. The methodology used is the bibliographical research of Kantian ethical philosophy. In the first chapter the concepts of man, of good will, of duty and of imperative are exposed through Kant's methodology. Resources used to understand the conceptual framework that underlies Kantian ethics and how these concepts help in understanding the idea of human dignity. In the second chapter we try to deal with the formulas of the imperative, that is, the formula of the universal law, the formula of humanity, the formula of autonomy and the realm of ends. As the subject of research is the question of human dignity, the content is structured around the formula of humanity, trying to show why the human being, in a general way, respects himself and others. In the third chapter, the concept of freedom is firstly exposed, followed by the concept of justice and equality, focusing on the reflexive exercise of promoting the encounter between the concept of human dignity, with the concepts of freedom, justice and equality by checking whether or not this meeting is possible. It is concluded that from the questions used during the research, the concept of human dignity does not change in the confrontation with the concepts of freedom, justice and equality, since Kant presents the moral law, they only reinforce the ideal of humanity.

That is, they may be dignity organizations or non-dignity organizations, depending on their practices. Descriptive and exploratory in nature, the research adopted the qualitative method, and basic interpretive type, in order to grasp the meanings of what would be worthy organizations through semi-structured interviews with ten pastors of IIGD. Taking as initial script open questionnaire used by Teixeira et al. (2010), who investigated the subject from the point of view of brazilian workers. Data were analyzed using interpretative analysis inspired in Flores. It could be said that the dignity of both types of organizations, non-religious and religious, is described by the respondents to have certain company characteristics: good people management, credibility, fulfilling of commitments, and managers with good character. The results showed that one must also consider the specifics of the organizations when it comes to investigating organizational characteristics of dignity. In the case of religious organizations, the characteristics of Theology Plain compare with the characteristics of Ecclesiastical Practices, which include the management of this type of business.

A Judeo-Christian account of human dignity in Canadian law and public policy

Penninga, Mark, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Arts and Science January 2008 (has links)
Understanding human dignity is integral to protecting human rights. An examination of Canada‘s Supreme Court decisions and Canadian public policy debates reveals that human dignity is being defined synonymously with individual autonomy and equality. This narrow understanding has serious implications for people who are not able to assert their autonomy. To understand the philosophical ideas behind these decisions, this thesis examines classical, modern, and postmodern accounts of human dignity and concludes that they fall short in providing an objective grounding for dignity that is truly human. It then looks to the Judeo- Christian account of human dignity to provide a transcendent foundation for human dignity. With this account, persons are rational and physical, relational, inviolable, and teleological – a hopeful contrast to the prevailing contemporary accounts. This thesis then defends the place of this religious perspective in our secular country. / vi, 182 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm.

In this context, the thesis proposes stretching the disciplinarity of the Law, unfolding the Legal Science to a more thorough perception of the human condition, encompassing the individual, social, anthropolitical and anthropoetical dimensions. It is not about, however, resorting to an abstract idea, but rather undertaking the construction of the concrete universality of such understanding, which translates into contextualizing the face of a planetary identity of the man, also taking into account its triunic nature which encompasses the dialogical and complementary relations amongst individual, society and species / A tese discute e problematiza o Princ?pio da Dignidade Humana em sua multidimensionalidade, de forma n?o exclusivamente individual e antropoc?ntrica, mas intersubjetiva e planet?ria, o que significa dizer que tal compreens?o transcende propriamente o humano, para contemplar a dignidade de um sujeito implicado no mundo.

The legal implications of defamatory statements on social media platforms in South Africa / Leonhard Hugo Homann

Homann, Leonhard Hugo January 2015 (has links)
With the fast pace that technology is currently developing, technology forms a bigger part of our day to day lives. Technological advancement has an impact on all aspects of life, including how we communicate with one another. This has caused an increase in social media usage. South Africa is in no way an exception to this growing trend. The escalation of the use of social media platforms has brought with it the rise in the wrongful use of social media. The growth in wrongful use would lead to the proliferation of legal consequences for defamatory statements with regard to social media situations. The question arises if South Africa‘s current legislation is able to regulate the new phenomena of defamatory statements on social media platforms. The conclusion was reached that South Africa‘s current legislation is more than adequate to regulate this new form of defamation. With the qualification that that judges apply the current legal principles of the law of delict to this new form of defamation correctly. Educating and informing judges, as well as the public is vital in preventing this new form of defamation to become problematic. / LLM, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015
