The Green Dining Room: The Experience of an Arts and Crafts InteriorMeiers, Sarah 14 April 2009 (has links)
Commissioned in 1865 for London’s South Kensington Museum (now the V&A), the Green Dining Room was conceived during an exciting period in Victorian Britain, when idealistic artists and architects elevated the status of the decorative arts in fine art circles, promoted the ideal of joy in labour, and sought beauty in the everyday. The Green Dining Room is considered a quintessential example of an early decorative scheme by Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., a collective of artists who helped to inspire Britain’s Arts and Crafts movement through their products and their principles of art manufacture. It is adjoined by two other refreshment areas: one designed by James Gamble (a salaried employee of the museum) and the other by Edward Poynter (a promising young painter with an affinity for the decorative arts). The three rooms manifest varied, even conflicting, opinions on the cultivation of design. They indicate how different design professionals hoped to see their art progress. However, the rooms were not simply artistic statements. They were also functioning dining areas for the use of guests and employees of the museum. By assessing the aims of the South Kensington administration, the ambitions of the designers who contributed to the museum’s fabric, and the impressions of Victorians who witnessed the results, I will illustrate how the Green Dining Room occupies a unique position in the history of nineteenth-century design reform. / Thesis (Ph.D, Art History) -- Queen's University, 2008-09-07 21:35:05.076

The goal of our projectis to „restart“ the Jaroslavice village. It was a well established settlement before the war, but has been on a downfall ever since. The problem began by eviction of german population after the war, followed by close distance to highly guarded border. This project is aiming on the possibility of living in the „ near border area and resumption of forgotten countryside. It proposes to connect old with new. The core of the project is renovation of majer near the castle. It is located on the edge of Jaroslavice and is connected to newly established part of the village. The site of the majer is becomming a connection point of history and present. Therefore, the object provides areas needed by students of newly designed high school. It includes accomodation, cafeteria and residental yard. It blends with additional areas of art centre nearby and is connected to the centre of village. Among the functions ths project provides, there is also a variable hall desired by village management.

Thomas Jeckyll, James McNeill Whistler, and the Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Peacock Room: A Re-ExaminationFischer, Cynthia 04 October 2013 (has links)
This dissertation uncovers three previously unrecognized innovations of Thomas Jeckyll in the Peacock Room. At the same time, the dissertation admits that sometimes James McNeill Whistler chose a more conventional path in the design of the room than previously acknowledged. The dissertation illuminates the often overlooked principle of Classical Decor, first described in the first century BC by Vitruvius, and analyzes how it was instituted in the Peacock Room. Four major points illustrate this conclusion. First, the meaning of the sunflower in the West is explored to account for the flower’s popularity and absorption into ancient heliotropic lore. Thomas Moore’s poetry may have inspired Aesthetic Movement designers such as Jeckyll to use the motif. Second, this dissertation demonstrates that the Peacock Room is only a distant descendant of the traditional European porcelain chamber. It was a new idea to turn the porcelain chamber into a dining room. Further, the room lacks two of the three key features of a porcelain room: lacquer panels and large plate-glass mirrors. When Whistler made the surfaces of this room dark and glossy, he made the room more traditional, aligning it with the customary lacquer paneling of porcelain rooms. And Jeckyll’s sho-dana shelving system in the Leyland dining room was without precedent in porcelain or other kinds of Western rooms, with influences from Japan and China. Third, Decor in the dining room was revealed as an established pattern in eating rooms from Ancient Roman triclinia to the present day. Fourth, Decor is present in the Peacock Room in four ways: in the trappings of the table used to decorate a dining room, in the darkness of this dining room, in the use of a foodstuff, the peacock, to decorate the room, and in the hearth’s sunflowers. Through the lens of the history of Western domestic interiors, significant innovations by Jeckyll have been brought to light, and the meaning of specific elements in the Peacock Room has been elucidated. Jeckyll and Whistler gave the world a sensational story in the Peacock Room but also a complex work of art that is only beginning to be illuminated.

Le temple de Comus. Naissance et évolution de la salle à manger dans l’architecture française (XVIIe-début XIXe siècles) / The Comus Temple. Birth and evolution of the dining room in French architecture (17th-early 19th century)Lestienne, Cécile 09 December 2017 (has links)
Amid growing specialization of domestic interiors, the dining room emerges in French housing during the 17th century and gains ground during the following one. At that time, the upper classes increasingly long towards more well-being and intimacy, and interiors are designed so as to favor comfort at the expense of pageantry and the public sphere. The birth of the dining room therefore partly owes to the landlords' desire to own a room specifically dedicated to enjoying meals among kins, while simultaneously being well connected to the kitchen, so that the food can be served warm. This development comes along the promotion, throughout Europe, of a new French cuisine, and a new way to set up meals, known as service à la française. At the time, however, the dining room remains a work in progress. At the beginning of the 18th century, contemporaries often see it as a mere utilitarian space. And, since the householders are likely to be bothered by the smell of food and the servants' presence, it is generally set away from the more luxurious appartments. But during the late 18th century, as the bourgeois way of life becomes predominant, the dining room, along with the living room, asserts itself as a key component of a mansion's reception area.

Integrering av iläggsskiva i matbord / Integration of a table leaf to a dining room tabledos Santos Cardoso Olsson, Johan, Karlsson, Marie January 2009 (has links)
This report covers the result of a final thesis in Product Design Engineering, in partial fulfillment of the Product Design Engineering program held at the University of Skövde. This report describes a project that was carried out in conjunction with Lundbergs Möbler in Tibro. The objective of the report is to convey the design process of integrating a table leaf into a Lundbergs dining table. The report will also present the product as it goes through the whole design process from idea, materializing in a prototype and concluding to a final concept/product. A pre study displays an overall view of product handling and current market solutions of today's table leaves, where handling issues and ergonomics of table leaf usage is illuminated. The information from the pre study has determined the feasibility of the project and has also been utilized as a foundation for a project specification upon which further product development can commence. With the information from the pre study as a foundation, the idea generation phase could begin. Different creativity methods are used to bring forth several innovatory ideas that can be utilized in improving the product. These ideas were improved on and evaluated to result in three different concepts. These concepts were then presented to Lundbergs Möbler who went through them and decided which concept to go forward with. Conceptual matrices were then used to steer further development of the product. When the concept was developed to satisfaction a CAD-model and a physical prototype has been built from the specifications and measurements from the CAD program. The prototype demonstrated the function of the mechanism that had resulted from the project. The prototype that resulted from integrating a table leaf in a dining table gave a functional mechanism that could be taken into production.

Dětská léčebna Ostrov u Macochy / Childern´s Sanatorium Ostrov u MacochyVencovská, Tereza January 2020 (has links)
This master’s thesis was prepared as an architectural study on the topic of Childern's sanatorium Ostrov u Macochy. It proposes design of a new children’s treatment centre that uses the nearby Císařská Cave for speleotherapeutic treatment. The municipality of Ostrov u Macochyis in the district of Blansko. The new building is located on the outskirts of the village surrounded by the nature of the protected area CHKO Moravský kras, the terrain is sloping and oriented to the south. These are the main attributes that the object uses and adapts to.The treatment centre operates in a single building with two main floors. The ground floor has space for commercial use, entrance hall, medical, rehabilitation and administrative part, kitchen and facilities for speleotherapy and operation of the treatment centre. The first floor is dedicated to children. One half of the first floor consists of playing areas and rooms for accommodated children and separate rooms for children accommodated with their parents. In the second half of the first floor there is an elementary school with three classrooms, a dining room and a caretaker's apartment. Thanks to the terrain, it is possible to enter the atrium and the garden with sports grounds from the entire first floor. This creates a connection between the interior and surrounding nature. The construction system of the building is mostly brick, supplemented by reinforced concrete columns, sprayed forms of prestressed ceiling slabs, the roof is flat green. The main idea of the urban solution is to create serious looking building connected with nature, which will respect the sloping terrain and the surrounding buildings. The architectural solution is based on a simple cubic U-shaped form, partially embedded in the terrain. The mass forms the atrium. The dominant feature of the facade are coloured shielding slats, which prevent the building from overheating. These slats also appear elsewhere on the facade and children can play
