The US’ view on Just War : A content analysis of the Trump administration’s justification of the attack on general Soleimani

Wallerå, Anna January 2020 (has links)
On January 3, 2020, Iranian major general Qasem Soleimani was killed through a targeted drone strike at the authorisation of the US President Donald Trump. This thesis examines if, and in that case how, the arguments presented by the Trump administration used to justify the killing of general Soleimani are in line with the principles of Just War theory. By conducting a case study, through a qualitative content analysis, analysing four official statements made by the Trump administration during a two months period after the killing, this thesis will examine the moral discourses in the arguments presented. Drawing on insights from studies regarding the justification of War on Terror, preemptive war, and targeted killings according to the Just War theory, lays the foundation for a deeper reasoning of the legality of the argumentation based on the principles of Just War. This thesis will show that in some aspects, the arguments presented by the Trump administration can be interpreted to be in accordance with one of the principles, but none of the statements satisfy the criteria in all of the principles. Therefore, the overall conclusion of this analysis is that the Trump administration has the intention of justifying the attack, but the arguments used are not rooted in Just War theory. Further, this thesis will also show an inconsistency over time in the arguments presented. The contribution from this study lays in the analysis of the arguments on the basis of the principles of Just War theory, not from the perspective of international law. The intention from this thesis is not to analyse if the attack itself can be seen as just according to Just War theory but looking at the argumentation presented by the Trump administration.

The victim-offender as the epitome of the nonideal victim

Berrend, Ashanti January 2020 (has links)
The victim-offender overlap has been extensively studied and documented overthe last decades. Various studies have identified young men as the most commonvictims of violent assault, yet the public, the media, but also criminologicalresearch have actively favored the discourse on the ideal victim. Consequently, not much is known about how victim-offenders experience and perceivevictimization. The present systematic literature review aims to analyze how violent victimizationis experienced and narrated by male victim-offenders in the context of hegemonicmasculinity. Secondly, it aims to analyze in how far the public’s attitudes ofvictim blaming and victim concern are affected by a belief in a just world.Collectively, these findings aim to create a better understanding of criminal men’svictim identities. The public’s empathy and concern are reserved to the innocent and vulnerablevictim; criminal men are perceived as culpable and deserving of victimization. The latter use violence as an instrument of dominance and subordination, in linewith hegemonic masculinity beliefs, and reject the victim identity (antithesis ofmasculinity), forming a new category of the nonideal victim.

Improving Academic Natural Language Processing Infrastructures Utilizing Cluster Computation

Sahami, Soheila 25 September 2020 (has links)
In light of widespread digitization endeavors and ever-growing textual data generation, developing efficient academic Natural Language Processing (NLP) infrastructures, which can deal with large amounts of data, is of particular importance. Novel computation technologies allow tools that support big data and heavy computation while performing timely and cost-effective data processing. This development has led researchers to demand that knowledge be extracted from ever-increasing textual data before it is outdated. Cluster computation is a modern technology for handling big data efficiently. It provides distribution of computing and data over a number of machines in a cluster, as well as efficient use of resources, which are key requirements to process big data in a timely manner. It also assures applications’ high availability and fault tolerance, which are fundamental concerns when dealing with vast amounts of data. In addition, it provides load balancing of data during the execution of tasks, which results in optimal use of resources and enhances efficiency. Data-oriented parallelization is an effective solution to enable the currently available academic NLP infrastructures to process big data. This approach offers a solution to parallelize the NLP tools which comprise identical non-complicated tasks without the expense of changing NLP algorithms. This thesis presents the adaption of cluster computation technology to academic NLP infrastructures to address the notable features that are essential to process vast quantities of text materials efficiently, in terms of both resources and time. Apache Spark on top of Apache Hadoop and its ecosystem have been utilized to develop a set of NLP tools that provide a distributed environment to execute the NLP tasks. Many experiments were conducted to assess the functionality of the designated strategy. This thesis shows that using cluster computation technology and data-oriented parallelization enables academic NLP infrastructures to execute large amounts of textual data in a timely manner while improving the performance of the NLP tools. Moreover, these experiments provide information that brings a more realistic and transparent estimation of workflows’ costs (required hardware resources) and execution time, along with the fastest, optimum, or feasible resource configuration for each individual workflow. This knowledge can be employed by users to trade-off between run-time, size of data, and hardware, and it enables them to design a strategy for data storage, duration of data retention, and delivery time. This has the potential to enhance researchers’ satisfaction when using academic NLP infrastructures. The thesis also shows that a cluster computation approach provides the capacity to adapt NLP services with JIT delivery systems. The proposed strategy assures the reliability and predictability of the services, which are the main characteristics of the services in JIT delivery systems. Defining the relevant parameters, recording the behavior of the services, and analyzing the generated data resulted in the provision of knowledge that can be utilized to create a service catalog—a fundamental requirement for the services in JIT delivery systems—for each service offered. This knowledge also helps to generate the performance profiles for each item mentioned in the service catalog and to update them continuously to cover new experiments and improve service quality.

Válečná rétorika amerických prezidentů - QCA / U. S. Presidential War Rhetoric - QCA

Kopečný, Ondřej January 2020 (has links)
The United States of America emerged from the dissolution of bipolar Cold War order as the sole superpower, able to pursue its foreign policy goals uncontested. Even though war is generally considered negative practice in American ideational context, American presidencies are able to garner public support for their military adventures. Use of rhetoric is deemed central in the process of convincing the public of legitimacy and necessity of war. The thesis therefore aims at exploration of the language American presidencies use to justify military involvements in war-affirmative speech acts, represented by public presidential addresses. For each respective conflict, one address has been singled out, while in total eight addresses, four by Republican and four by Democratic Presidents have been examined. These selected speeches represent a data set. The matter is then explored in several contexts throughout the period of 1989-2011. Methodically, the Qualitative Content Analysis framework is being used, in order to find evidence in form of defined set of codes. Principally the thesis assesses the employment of just war theory frame by American presidencies in the examined period as a mean of legitimating a conflict. Second, the thesis explores usage of polarizing imagery throughout selected speech acts....

Business Process Reengineering within the bicycle industry

Bartolomé Rodriguez, David January 2010 (has links)
Bicycle leader brands have shift production overseas to reduce the cost of labor and to implement new technologies at lower cost. Bike manufacturer both in Asia and Europe employ a traditional way of production  based on economics of scale that aims cost per unit reduction. Where MRP systems and forecasting are part of their day basis operations. This traditional way of operation offers room for innovation that must be seen as a business opportunity. Thus, alternative management approaches can strengthen strategic goals and improve responsiveness and flexibility. Bicycle brands producing locally should implement alternative management systems to remain competitive, to take the maximum advantage of their location, to improve customer service and to cut operational cost. The course of action followed was a market analys is to understand the nature of the bicyclemarket within European Union. Similarly, a Business Process Reengineering was conducted to identify with the current operational processes and opportunities within the bicycle industry. Based on the Business Process Engineering, an alternative business model was presented. The main proposed solution to improve the current operational processes:  (a) Implementation of Just-‐in-‐time management system and relocation of assembly facilities.  (b) Benchmark IKEA core methods, designing products for supply chain and that customer assemble  the future themselves. (c) Benchmark Dell Computer business model of customization and supply chain. Finally, the fundaments for an alternative business concept were established regarding bicycle design concept, strategy planning and production system design.

Jus post bellum and the international community : En diskursanalys av FN:s generalförsamlings diskussioner om krigssluts- och efterkrigsarbete

Hellström, Patricia January 2021 (has links)
Jus post bellum is the less known part of the just war theory which concerns how one should act morally in the end and the aftermath of a war. Lately this component of the theory has gained a lot of attention among researchers who state that jus post bellum is at least as important as the other parts, jus ad bellum and jus in bello, and needs to be given more priority. Central in the researchers’concepts of jus post bellum is the international community which is stated to be a key party in the implementation. This essay aims to increase the understanding about this subject by analyzing how the problems surrounding jus post bellum is discussed by the international community today. This is achieved by using the “What’s the Problem Represented to Be” (WPR) policy analysis approach on the UN general assembly debate held in 2019. The results shows that jus post bellum is discussed frequently in the debate and contains several similarities with the research overview. However, opinions are divided on what the problems, solutions, responsibilities and main factors are which can be a problem for future development.
