End User Resource Valuation in Community College Libraries: A Q Methodology Study

The purpose of this study was to explore the valuation process of community college library end-users as they decide which information resources to use when conducting research. This study was designed as an exploratory study using Q methodology and focused on five specific information resources that community college library end-users routinely use in their research process: the Internet, the reference librarian, books, newspapers, and subscription databases. Little is known about the valuation hierarchy that end-users overlay on these resources when deciding which ones to use to address a specific research need. Sixty-four community college library end-users from four main campuses of a large community college sorted 40 statements describing specific value statements pertaining to the information resources under study. The statements were sorted along a continuum ranging from least like me (-4) to most like me (+4) with 0 representing an opinion of neutrality. Following these procedures, five factors emerged that represented different perspectives on value relating to the five information resources under study. Interpretation of these factors yielded distinct patterns of opinion relating to the perceived value of each information resource. These factors were named: (a) Browsers, (b) Proficient, (c) Vacillators, (d) Bibliophiles, and (e) Traditionalists. The results of the study suggest that community college library end-users value, to varying degrees, all five of the information resources selected for this study. The results also suggest that while the Internet has become a dominant information resource in the community college library end-user's research process, other more traditional information resources such as the reference librarian, books, and, to a lesser extent, newspapers still hold value in the research process. The perspectives described and the interpretation provided in this study can greatly assist community college library end-users in the valuation of available community college library information resources.

Student, Parent and Teacher Perceptions of Emergent Literacy

This qualitative study was conducted to illuminate the different perceptions of students, parents, and teachers in one urban classroom pertaining to learning to read and write. The study explored the similarities, differences, and relationships among these perceptions. One kindergarten classroom was selected in an urban school that was currently implementing literacy initiatives. Eighteen students, six parents and three teachers were interviewed to provide insight into their views of emergent literacy. Five themes were identified as reoccurring topics and are discussed in the findings: activities that count as reading and writing, motivation for learning to read, how children acquire literacy skills, the use of technology to promote literacy, and working with students at home. The findings suggested that there are few literacy related issues upon which students, parents and teachers agree. Five conclusions were drawn based upon the findings. The conclusions examined the use of metacognitive discussions, appropriateness of motivational techniques, teachers' knowledge of research, effectiveness of computers in the classroom, and benefits to parents of volunteering in the classroom. The need to improve communication and interaction between students, parents, teachers and administrators was illuminated in this study.

The medicine schools were driven to review their curricula, emphasizing disciplines and organizing interventions for recovering of the humanism in medical practice. The general objective of the dissertation was to identify the actions proposed or developed in medicine courses for resumption of humanization in the medical practice. The specific objectives were to highlight the main attributes of the humanism and to describe the main educational interventions adopted for the humanism development in medical practice. A systematic revision of the literature was carried out for the attainment of the study objectives, by means of researching in the databases of the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature and Pub Med, from 2010 to 2016, in Portuguese and English languages. The research resulted in the selection of 23 publications. The results showed that the humanism main attribute is the empathy, which the schools of medicine are developing as main actions the changes in the curriculum of the courses. The main educational implemented actions involve, besides the curricular changes, exchanges and extension programs, through the inclusion of new disciplines, the use of play activities and cultural contexts that are distinct from those of the students' origin. It was concluded that the range of the measures is still small, considering the universe of the medicine courses and its lack of results for more objective analysis. / A “desumanização” da medicina tem sido atribuída em grande parte às escolas de medicina, que privilegiam aspectos científicos, em detrimento daqueles teóricos e voltados ao humanismo. As escolas de medicina se viram impelidas a rever seus currículos, enfatizando disciplinas e organizando intervenções para retomada do humanismo na prática médica. O objetivo geral da dissertação foi identificar as ações propostas ou desenvolvidas nos cursos de medicina para a retomada da humanização na prática médica. Os objetivos específicos foram evidenciar os principais atributos do humanismo e descrever as principais intervenções educacionais adotadas para o desenvolvimento do humanismo na prática médica. Para a consecução dos objetivos do estudo, foi realizada uma revisão sistemática de literatura, mediante pesquisa nas bases de dados da Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde e PubMed, no período de 2010 a 2016, nos idiomas português e inglês. A pesquisa resultou na seleção de 23 publicações. Os resultados mostraram que o principal atributo do humanismo é a empatia e que as escolas de medicina estão desenvolvendo como principais ações alterações nos currículos dos cursos. As principais ações educacionais implementadas envolvem alterações curriculares, intercâmbios e programas de extensão, mediante a inclusão de novas disciplinas, uso de atividades lúdicas e atuação em contextos culturais distintos dos de origem dos estudantes. Concluiu-se que a abrangência das medidas ainda é pequena, considerando-se o universo dos cursos de medicina, e seus resultados carecem de análise mais objetiva.

Early research on just why it might be the case that “the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation” suggested that denial of relevance was a significant factor. Asking why denial of relevance would be significant and how it might be resolved began to raise issues of the very nature of questions. Pursuing the nature of questions, in light of denial of relevance and Thoreau’s “quiet desperation” provoked a journey of modeling questions and constructing a biography of the initial question of this research and its evolution. Engaging literature from philosophy, neuroscience, and retrieval then combined with deep interviews of successful lawyers to render a thick, biographical model of questioning.

Violencia contra médicos en establecimientos de salud hospitalarios, en Lima Metropolitana

Objetivo: Estimar la frecuencia y los factores asociados a la violencia laboral externa tipo amenaza (VLETA) contra médicos en servicios de salud hospitalarios de Lima Metropolitana, Perú. Materiales y Métodos: Se desarrolló un estudio de corte transversal analítico que incluyó médicos de servicios de salud hospitalarios del Ministerio de Salud (MINSA), la Seguridad Social (EsSalud) y el sector privado. Se midió la frecuencia de VLETA durante toda la práctica profesional, en los últimos doce meses y en el último mes. Se midieron variables relacionadas al médico, al agresor y el servicio de salud. Para evaluar la asociación entre los factores y VLETA en los últimos doce meses, se calculó la Razones de Prevalencia (RPs) cruda y ajustada con IC95% mediante un modelo lineal generalizado de Poisson con bootstrap no paramétrico. Resultados: Se incluyó 406 médicos. El 31,5% fueron víctimas de VLETA al menos una vez durante su práctica profesional, 19,9% en los últimos doces meses y 7,6% en el último mes. La probabilidad de ser amenazado en los últimos doce meses aumentó si el médico era varón (RPa: 1,7;IC95% 1,1-2,8), egresado de una universidad peruana fuera de Lima Metropolitana (RPa 1,5; IC95% 1,1-2,4), laboraba en el MINSA (RPa 7,9; IC95% 2,24-50,73) o en EsSalud (RPa 8,68; IC95% 2,26-56,17), y atendía en emergencia (RPa 1,9; IC95% 1,2-3,6) o en sala de operaciones (RPa 1,6 IC95% 1,1-2,3). La edad, los años de práctica profesional o ser médico residente no se asociaron a VLETA. Conclusión: Una alta proporción de médicos ha sido víctima de VLETA. Laborar en servicios públicos aumentó la probabilidad de serlo. Se sugiere implementar estrategias de prevención primaria, identificación y soporte en los establecimientos hospitalarios. / Objective: To estimate the frequency and associated factors with external workplace violence external type threat (VLETA) against doctors in hospital health services of Lima, Peru. Materials and Methods: A crosscut and analytical study that included medical hospital health services of Health Ministry, Social Security and the private sub-sector through a survey. VLETA frequency was measured throughout the practice, in the last twelve months and in the last month. Variables related to doctor, the aggressor and the health service were measured too. The crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (PRs) with CI 95% to evaluate the association between factors and VLETA in the last twelve months, were calculated using a generalized linear model with nonparametric bootstrap. Results: 406 physicians were included. 31.5% were victims of VLETA at least once during his practice, 19.9% in the last twelve months and 7.6% in the last month. The probability of being threatened in the last twelve months increased if the doctor was male (aPR: 1.7; 95% CI 1.1 to 2.8), graduated from a Peruvian university outside Lima Metropolitana (aPR 1.5, 95 % 1.1-2.4), worked in MINSA (aPR 7.9; 95% CI 2.24 to 50.73) or EsSalud (aPR 8.68, 95% CI 2.26 to 56.17), and attending emergency (aPR 1.9; 95% CI 1.2 to 3.6) or operating room (95% CI 1.1-2.3 aPR 1.6). Age, years of professional practice or a resident doctor, not associated with VLETA. Conclusion: A high proportion of doctors has been the victim of VLETA. Physicians who worked in public services were more likely to be victims. It is suggested to implement strategies for primary prevention, identification and support in hospitals. / Tesis

As a cultural staple, the Christian faith has been a defining characteristic of the United States for generations. Religion has moved from the spiritual and become integral to many parts of this society’s social gatherings, artistic outlets, and even businesses. Often rooting itself in conservative values and interpretations of The Bible, Evangelicalism’s beliefs regarding damnation and hell contradicts its sola scriptura theological view. Yet, with The Bible’s near silence on hellish matters when looked at as a whole, the human need to have these gaps filled allowed for literary portrayals of hell and explanations of damnation to become part of this subsect of Christianity. Lining sermons with bits and pieces of Faustus’s lost soul, a new tradition was born. Filling churches with paintings of unique layers of hell from Dante’s Inferno, this tradition took on new life. This thesis analyzes how Evangelicalism has bypassed The Bible in favor of Doctor Faustusand Inferno as well as how Christianity in the United States influences literature and biblical interpretations.

A Framework for Legal Enforceability of Living Wills in South Africa

This thesis investigates the legal validity of living wills (advance directives) in South Africa. The study explores the current status of living wills in South Africa and contains recommendations on how legal enforceability of living wills can be improved in the South African context. The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, the common law and the National Health Act, 61 of 2003, serve as basic points of departure for this investigation. Shortcomings in the current South African legislation and proposed draft legislation including the Law Commission’s Draft Bill on End of Life Decisions, 1998, and The National Health Amendment Bill, 2019, as well as shortcomings in the common law, the field of medical ethics and medical practice are indicated and recommendations for an improved framework are made. For purposes of a legal comparative methodology, the legal frameworks of living wills in the Netherlands, England and Canada are investigated. Specific circumstances which could potentially hamper the legal enforcement of living wills are discussed, including: emergency situations, do-not-resuscitate orders, permanent vegetative states, dementia, cessation of artificial hydration and feeding, pregnancy, euthanasia, assisted suicide, palliative care, pain relief and organ donation. It is argued that a living will could be an important tool in enhancing the doctor-patient relationship, not only to the benefit of the autonomous patient whose dignity and other fundamental human rights should be protected, but also to the benefit of the doctor as the medical care provider. / Thesis (LLD)--University of Pretoria, 2019. / Public Law / LLD / Unrestricted

1 ABSTRACT The aim of this text is to provide an analysis of the phenomenon of spin doctoring in the Euro-Atlantic area. Spin doctors are educated people in the fields of semiotics, cultural studies, public relations, political communication and especially familiar with the infrastructure and the functioning of the media industry. Critical reflection of manipulative communication techniques puts spin phenomenon in historical perspective and traces its practical use in today's social communication in Western society. Using the concept of semiology and explore possibilities of interpersonal communication techniques and characteristics of the spin doctor. We present a compilation of persuasive techniques. We follow the sign systems, specific channels and media that are used by spin doctors. We evaluate how the different channels vary in relation to the effective application of spin. We focus on the significance of the rise of new media in social communication and mediation and explore the impact of proliferation of Access to the Net to individuals' participation in the democratic process.
