LISZT AND CHRISTUS: REACTIONARY ROMANTICISM

Pegg, Robert January 2020 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to examine the historical context of Franz Lizt’s oratorio Christus and explore its obscurity. Chapter 1 makes note of the much greater familiarity of other choral works of the Romantic period, and observes critics’ and scholars’ recognition (or lack thereof) of Liszt’s religiosity. Chapter 2 discusses Liszt’s father Adam, his religious and musical experiences, and his influence on the young Franz. Chapter 3 explores Liszt’s early adulthood in Paris, particularly with respect to his intellectual growth. Special attention is given to François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand and the Abbé Félicité de Lamennais, and the latter’s papal condemnation. After Chapter 4 briefly chronicles Liszt’s artistic achievements in Weimar and its ramifications for the rest of his work, Chapter 5 examines theological trends in the nineteenth century, as exemplified by David Friedrich Strauss, and the Catholic Church’s rejection of such novelties. The writings of Charles Rosen aid in decribing the possible musical ramifications of modern theology. Chapter 6 takes stock of the movements for renewal in Catholic music, especially the work of Prosper Gueranger and his fellow Benedictine monks of Solesmes, France, and of the Society of Saint Cecilia in Germany. Liszt’s interest in these movements, and in the style then in use in the Sistine Chapel, also receive comment. Chapter 7 analyzes Christus itself, and explains it as a synthesis of the styles then in use by Catholic composers of the era. Chapter 8 concludes with musings on the state of Catholic music, suggestions on how that field could be improved, and Christus’s future. / Music Composition / Accompanied by one .pdf score: Denarius: Two movements for Orchestra.

Becoming Catholic: Story, Sacrament, Conversion and the Emergence of Faith in Postconciliar Autobiographies

Vinskie, Erica L. January 2011 (has links)
This thesis looks at the spiritual autobiographies of thirty contemporary young adult Catholic men and women in their early twenties through their early forties. It argues that their life writings, when taken together as a whole and read through the dual lens of Story and Sacrament, evidence an emergent process of conversion, of "becoming Catholic" in the modern American milieu. / Religion

Three essays concerning religion and domestic behavior

Gregoire, Scott Larkin 26 October 2009 (has links)
In the first essay, I demonstrate that during the 1970s, the marital behavior of US Catholics changed dramatically relative to that of the total population. The Catholic marriage rate, that is, the number of Catholic marriages per 1000 Catholics, decreased nearly 20 percent relative to the civil marriage rate. Before and after this time period, the two rates moved in unison. Empirically, I find that the Catholic reforms and encyclicals of the 1960s, that is, Vatican II and Humanae Vitae, led to a decrease in the Catholic marriage rate relative to the civil marriage rate and that the reform of civil divorce law had no effect on this relative rate. In the second essay, I expand the analysis of the previous essay and test whether a negative response among US Catholics to the reforms of Vatican II and to Humanae Vitae is able to explain the increase in the civil marriage rate, the decrease in the Catholic marriage rate, and the increase in the interfaith marriage rate seen in the data. To do this, I construct an original model that treats marriage as a set of two contracts, one civil and one religious, with the benefit and cost of the religious contract depending upon a social complementarity. The theory and the data match if the primary effect of 1960s Catholic reform was to decrease the benefit of a Catholic marriage. In the third essay, I examine the link between religiosity and the incidence of domestic abuse and model sanctification as the pathway connecting the two. Sanctification is "a psychological process through which aspects of life are perceived by people as having spiritual character or significance"[25]. In the model, the abuser must his choose level of abuse, and both abuser and abused must allocate a scarce amount of time between the production of a marital good and a personal consumption good. Sanctification is modeled as an increase in the return to time invested in the marital good. Theoretically, abuse increases in both spouses' level of sanctification and the wife's productivity and decreases in the husband's productivity. This partially agrees with the data. / text

Názory jednoho Němce na změnu hodnot v společnosti po druhé světové válce. Interpretace románu "Klaunovy názory" od Heinricha Bölla a jeho filmového zpracování / Opinions of a German about the value-shifts in the society after the Second World War. Interpretation of the novel "Clown" by Heinrich Böll and its film adaptation

Title Opinions of a German about the value-shifts in the society after the Second World War. Interpretation of the novel "Clown" by Heinrich Böll and its film adaptation Abstract This diploma thesis deals with the novel The Clown (1963) by an important representative of the German post-war literature Heinrich Böll and its film adaptation (1974) of the same name by a Czech director Vojtěch Jasný. The first part of the thesis presents author's life, literary work as well as the roots of his broadly humanistic view of life, which are closely interlinked with his strong Christian belief and his personal value system. The main target of the thesis is a thorough interpretation of the novel, in which author's critical viewpoint on the socio-cultural development of the post-war German society is very strongly reflected. The author's sharp satirical tone in this novel and the very evident anticlericalism are being looked at and explored in terms of the biblical motto of the novel and its main message. The aim of the final chapter is to point out the main differences between the novel and the film adaptation. Key words Heinrich Böll, value-shifts, the German society after the Second World War, Catholicism

Katolické náboženství, správa podniku a platy vrcholového managementu / Catholic Religion, Corporate Governance, and Executive Compensation

Šarapatka, Jan January 2016 (has links)
I find a significant positive compensation premium for executives employed by firms headquartered in Catholic counties. I document that the compensation premium holds only for board member executives and that it is related to weaker corporate governance in Catholic regions. In addition, I explore several corporate governance measures and reveal that weaker corporate governance is a result of more developed connection networks among executives in Catholic regions. I document that even though a denser executive's social network is associated with worse operating performance, it enables the executive to reach higher pay. Therefore, I suggest that executives in Catholic regions are using their more developed social networks and weaker corporate governance to extract additional rents from the firm. My findings are consistent with a larger development of social ties in more community-focused Catholic regions than in more individualistic Protestant regions. I contribute by showing how religion deters efficiency of the top executive labor market through social ties.

No Reino do Paraíso Terreal: rebeldes-devotos da Pedra Encantada do Rodeador: Pernambuco, 1820 / Kingdom of the Terreal Paradise: rebels-devotees of the Enchanted Stone of the Rodeador: Pernambuco, 1820

Medeiros, Pedro Castellan 25 June 2018 (has links)
This dissertation aims to analyze the movement of the Serra do Rodeador, where free and poor men and women, mostly mulattoes and rural workers, organized themselves in the Brotherhood in Bonito, in the backlands of the Pernambuco Province, in the early years of the century XIX. Identified by us as rebellious-devotees, that is, rebels in what concerns the fight against the social problems and injustices that reached that population; devotees in what marks the symbolic tools elaborated by them that served as weapons and shields for the struggle they intended to wage and to construct a new possible world. We chose to describe this movement through two paths: the Symbolic and the Social. In the first one marked by the religious patrimony of the sertão, inserted in a popular Catholicism and that expressed like a \"rustico\" sociorreligious movement. In the second as an expression of the Crisis of the Old Regime that reached the Captaincy of Pernambuco at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century, especially in relation to the expropriatory problems carried out by the Colonial State and suffered by those individuals. Erecting the Terreal Paradise City by the Rodeador\'s Enchanted Stone, these free and poor rebel-devout sertanejos constructed their own history from a perspective of reality in opposition to the established order that suppressed their autonomy and freedom. By uniting two different methodological fields to look at these free and poor men and women of the nineteenth century, previously unilaterally observed, we believe we have succeeded in presenting a touch of originality that competes with the studies of the popular revolts of the nineteenth century and the \"rustic\" socioreligious movements, mainly the revolt of the kingdom of the Terreal Paradise and the rebels-devotees of the Enchanted Stone of the Rodeador, 1820.
