A Case Study of E. E. Cummings: The Past and Presence of Modernist Literary Criticism

The early- to mid-twentieth century criticism surrounding E. E. Cummings often dismisses his poetry in Eliotic terms. In analyzing Cummings’s critics’ arguments and methodologies, I attempt to reveal the ways in which Cummings has been unfairly labelled, and also the strains in modernist criticism that have continued up through to today. I compare the modernist approaches to the text to the way recent critics talk about Cummings in order to shed light on our critical inheritance from modernism. Finally, I analyse Cummings’s poetry in terms of one of the more recent discussions of modernist texts, that of relationship between commodity and advertising culture and modernist poetry. My project seeks, by using Cummings as a case study, to articulate not only how certain literary values came to be established, but also how certain methods of persuasion in literary criticism can undermine and even silence certain aspects of a text.

Manipulação coerente de pontos quânticos em nanocavidades

In this work we studied the effects of coherent laser in a system formed by a quantum dot (QD) in a nanocavity. Initially we investigated the case where the energy of an éxciton are in resonance with the cavity mode and we vary the frequency of the laser. During our simulation we have used pulsed and continuos laser. We consider only the éxciton state of the QD, and in situations where both the laser and the cavity mode are close to resonance, allowing us to use the rotating wave approximation. The QD was treated as a two-level system and the cavity containing a maximum of four photons. For this study we used the Jaynes-Cummings model with an extra term related to the external pulse, which was used to manipulate quantum states. This was done with the help of diagonalization of the approximated Hamiltonian and searching for anticrossings in its energy spectrum. Then we use a continuous laser and the technique of calculating the average occupational each state to do a better mapping of the parameter values required to make the manipulation of quantum states. We found that the system can be manipulated using the process of two or more photons, and the energies of these photons could be estimated using a mapping procedure developed in this dissertation. / Neste trabalho estudamos os efeitos da incidência de um laser coerente num sistema formado por um ponto quântico (PQ) no interior de uma nanocavidade. Inicialmente investigamos o caso em que a energia de um éxciton formado no PQ está em ressonância com um modo da cavidade e variamos a frequência do laser incidente. Usamos laser contínuo e pulsado em nossas simulações. O ponto quântico foi tratado como um sistema de dois níveis e consideramos que a cavidade contém no máximo quatro fótons. Para este estudo foi utilizado o modelo de Jaynes-Cummings com acréscimo de um termo relacionado com o pulso externo usado para manipular os estados quânticos, que foi feito com o auxílio da diagonalização do Hamiltoniano aproximado e procurando por anticruzamentos no seu espectro de energia. Consideramos apenas o estado de éxciton no PQ, e situações em que tanto o laser como o modo da cavidade estão próximos à energia de ressonância, o que nos permitiu usar a aproximação de ondas girantes. Utilizamos um laser contínuo e calculamos a média ocupacional de cada estado para fazer um melhor mapeamento dos valores dos parâmetros necessário para realizar a manipulação dos estados quânticos. Encontramos que o sistema pode ser manipulado usando processo de dois ou mais fótons, sendo que as energias destes fótons podem ser estimadas usando um procedimento de mapeamento desenvolvido nesta dissertação. / Mestre em Física

D-Aminoacylases and Dipeptidases within the Amidohydrolase Superfamily: Relationship Between Enzyme Structure and Substrate Specificity

Approximately one third of the genes for the completely sequenced bacterial genomes have an unknown, uncertain, or incorrect functional annotation. Approximately 11,000 putative proteins identified from the fully-sequenced microbial genomes are members of the catalytically diverse Amidohydrolase Superfamily. Members of the Amidohydrolase Superfamily separate into 24 Clusters of Orthologous Groups (cogs). Cog3653 includes proteins annotated as N-acyl-D-amino acid deacetylases (DAAs), and proteins within cog2355 are homologues to the human renal dipeptidase. The substrate profiles of three DAAs (Bb3285, Gox1177 and Sco4986) and six microbial dipeptidase (Sco3058, Gox2272, Cc2746, LmoDP, Rsp0802 and Bh2271) were examined with N-acyl-L-, N-acyl-D-, L-Xaa-L-Xaa, L-Xaa-D-Xaa and D-Xaa-L-Xaa substrate libraries. The rates of hydrolysis of the library components were determined by separating the amino acids by HPLC and quantitating the products. Gox1177 and Sco4986 hydrolyzed several N-acyl-D-amino acids, especially those where the amino acid was a hydrophobic residue. Gox1177 hydrolyzed L-Xaa-D-Xaa and N-acetyl-D-amino acids with similar catalytic efficiencies (~10⁴ M⁻¹s⁻¹). The best substrates identified for Gox1177 and Sco4986 were N-acetyl-D-Trp and N-acetyl-D-Phe, respectively. Conversely, Bb3285 hydrolyzed N-acyl-D-Glu substrates (kcat/Km ⁹́⁸ 5 x 10⁶M⁻¹s⁻¹) and, to a lesser extent, L-Xaa-D-Glu dipeptides. The structure of a DAA from A. faecalis did not help explain the substrate specificity of Bb3285. N-methylphosphonate derivatives of D-amino acids were inhibitors of the DAAs examined. The structure of Bb3285 was solved in complex with the N-methylphosphonate derivative of D-Glu or acetate/formate. The specificity of Bb3285 was due to an arginine located on a loop which varied in conformation from the A. faecalis enzyme. In a similar manner, six microbial renal dipeptidase-like proteins were screened with 55 dipeptide libraries. These enzymes hydrolyzed many dipeptides but favored L-D dipeptides. Respectable substrates were identified for proteins Bh2271 (L-Leu-D-Ala, kcat/Km = 7.4 x 10⁴ M⁻¹s⁻¹), Sco3058 (L-Arg-D-Asp, kcat/Km = 7.6 x 10⁵ M⁻¹s⁻¹), Gox2272 (L-Asn-D-Glu, kcat/Km = 4.7 x 10⁵ M⁻¹s⁻¹), Cc2746 (L-Met-D-Leu, kcat/Km = 4.6 x 10⁵ M⁻¹s⁻¹), LmoDP (L-Leu-D-Ala, kcat/Km = 1.1 x 10⁵ M⁻¹s⁻¹), Rsp0802 (L-Met-D-Leu, kcat/Km = 1.1 x 10⁵ M⁻¹s⁻¹). Phosphinate mimics of dipeptides were inhibitors of the dipeptidases. The structures of Sco3058, LmoDP and Rsp0802 were solved in complex with the pseudodipeptide mimics of L-Ala-D-Asp, L-Leu-D-Ala and L-Ala-D-Ala, respectively. The structures were used to assist in the identification of the structural determinants of substrate specificity.

ABSTRACT This study focuses on twenty-one particular texts published in 1925 as contemporaries of The Great Gatsby. The manuscript is divided into four categories—The Impressionists, The Experimentalists, The Realists, and The Independents. Among The Impressionists are F. Scott Fitzgerald himself, Willa Cather (The Professor’s House), Sherwood Anderson (Dark Laughter), William Carlos Williams (In the American Grain), Elinor Wylie (The Venetian Glass Nephew), John Dos Passos (Manhattan Transfer), and William Faulkner (New Orleans Sketches). The Experimentalists are Gertrude Stein (The Making of Americans), E. E. Cummings (& aka “Poems 48-96”), Ezra Pound (A Draft of XVI Cantos), T. S. Eliot (“The Hollow Men”), Laura Riding (“Summary for Alastor”), and John Erskine (The Private Life of Helen of Troy). The Realists are Theodore Dreiser (An American Tragedy), Edith Wharton (The Mother’s Recompense), Upton Sinclair (Mammonart), Ellen Glasgow (Barren Ground), Sinclair Lewis (Arrowsmith), James Boyd (Drums), and Ernest Hemingway (In Our Time). The Independents are Archibald MacLeish (The Pot of Earth) and Robert Penn Warren (“To a Face in a Crowd”). Although these twenty-two texts may in some cases represent literary fragmentations, each in its own way also represents a coherent response to the spirit of the times that is in one way or another cognate to The Great Gatsby. The fact that all these works appeared the same year is special because the authors, if not already famous, would become famous, and their works were or would come to represent classic American literature around the world. The twenty-two authors either knew each other personally or knew each other’s works. Naturally, they were also influenced by writings of international authors and philosophers. The greatest common elements among the poets and fiction writers are their uninhibited interest in sex, an absorbing cynicism about life, and the frequent portrayal of disintegration of the family, a trope for what had happened to the countries and to the “family of nations” that experienced the Great War. In 1925, it would seem, Fitzgerald and many of his writing peers—some even considered his betters—channeled a major spirit of the times, and Fitzgerald did it more successfully than almost anyone.

The Association of Libarians in colleges of advanced education and the committee of Australian university librarians: The evolution of two higher education library groups, 1958-1997

This thesis examines the history of Commonwealth Government higher education policy in Australia between 1958 and 1997 and its impact on the development of two groups of academic librarians: the Association of Librarians in Colleges in Advanced Education (ALCAE) and the Committee of Australian University Librarians (CAUL). Although university librarians had met occasionally since the late 1920s, it was only in 1965 that a more formal organisation, known as CAUL, was established to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information. ALCAE was set up in 1969 and played an important role helping develop a special concept of library service peculiar to the newly formed College of Advanced Education (CAE) sector. As well as examining the impact of Commonwealth Government higher education policy on ALCAE and CAUL, the thesis also explores the influence of other factors on these two groups, including the range of personalities that comprised them, and their relationship with their parent institutions and with other professional groups and organisations. The study focuses on how higher education policy and these other external and internal factors shaped the functions, aspirations, and internal dynamics of these two groups and how this resulted in each group evolving differently. The author argues that, because of the greater attention given to the special educational role of libraries in the CAE curriculum, the group of college librarians had the opportunity to participate in, and have some influence on, Commonwealth Government statutory bodies responsible for the coordination of policy and the distribution of funding for the CAE sector. The link between ALCAE and formal policy-making processes resulted in a more dynamic group than CAUL, with the university librarians being discouraged by their Vice-Chancellors from having contact with university funding bodies because of the desire of the universities to maintain a greater level of control over their affairs and resist interference from government. The circumstances of each group underwent a reversal over time as ALCAE's effectiveness began to diminish as a result of changes to the CAE sector and as member interest was transferred to other groups and organisations. Conversely, CAUL gradually became a more active group during the 1980s and early 1990s as a result of changes to higher education, the efforts of some university librarians, and changes in membership. This study is based principally on primary source material, with the story of ALCAE and CAUL being told through the use of a combination of original documentation (including minutes of meetings and correspondence) and interviews with members of each group and other key figures.
