Education Management During COVID-19 : A Single Case Study of Swedish Higher Education Institute Jönköping University

Vernersson, Josef, Zaid Al-Kilani, Samer January 2021 (has links)
Background:COVID-19 is the most discussed topic since the beginning of the year. Moreover, today's society faces various problems caused by the COVID-19 crisis requiring new knowledge and strategies since various social institutions are affected in different ways, and the education system is included between these institutions. In fact, higher education institutions witnessed a huge transition from traditional classroom-based teaching to a virtual approach and online education. While higher education may have transformed and moved to online due to COVID-19, it is unknown whether the transition resulted in a changeddirectionfor education management. Purpose:This study aims to take a deeper look into how students and teachers are affected by COVID-19 for a higher education institution in Sweden by seeking through how online platforms are used and how it is affecting the users of education. Moreover, the study aims to know what changed in management practices and grading strategies fora sustainable university education quality during pandemics and emergencies. Method:Fulfilling the purpose, qualitative research design gathering empirical data by conducting semi-structured interviews with both students and teachers and taking a single case study approach for Swedish higher education Institute (Jönköping University) using the benefit of various perspectives from different schools that Jönköping University has. Also, higher education in Sweden combines the perspective from both students and teachers as it is on the concept 'freedom with responsibility' with students mainly pursuing their studies on their own or in groups and not focusing on the teacher perspective only. Another unique asset for Sweden higher education is the possibility to access all data collected about schools and students, such as grades which are classified as secondary data. Conclusion:The results show that thetransition affected the education managementsince it impactedthe organizing and communicating. Thenresults showed some factors, such as an earlier experienceplayed a role inadapting education management changessincea new concept of teaching developed withinthis transition with adapted teaching strategies, and students responded to that byimproved learning plans. Anothermain finding ineducation management aspects is the grading strategieswhereit was found that the criteria did not change, but exams got modified, leading to changesin thegradepatternsthat can be described as unnormal. All of that was concluded in a frameworkaccording toour findings and research work.

Addressing low matriculation pass rates in the Eastern Cape province : an education management perspective

Coetzee, Jacobus Petrus 30 November 2003 (has links)
In South Africa, the Eastern Cape Province (ECP) has shown the lowest matriculation pass rates for most of 1994 to 2002. This has led to great academic and media focus on the managerial and leadership role of school principals, which became the inspiration for this education management study. The researcher investigated a school principal's efficiency and effectiveness in a school system, and the detrimental impact on learner academic achievement should these vital skills be lacking. Thus, the role of the school principals at schools with low matriculation pass rates was probed to reveal shortcomings in the level of their commitment, and how these could be rectified. The researcher completed a qualitative research study at four schools with low matriculation pass rates in the Eastern Cape Province. The empirical study confirmed that learners at many schools with low matriculation pass rates are subjected to poor infrastructure and overcrowding. Furthermore, the school principals did not create school atmospheres conducive to teaching and learning, and neglected to foster open communication between the school stakeholders. The study found that the school principal's management and leadership role was not based on the belief that all learners are worthy of being taught under the best possible educational conditions. The teachers are required to promote learner academic interests, made possible through efficient classroom management, to sustain teacher quality, and to ensure learner academic achievement, yet they are subjected to poor working environments and ill-disciplined learners. This study nevertheless emphasises that all school stakeholders are accountable for low matriculation pass rates, but that it is the responsibility of the school principals to institute corrective measures. It highlights that parents can enhance learner academic progress through their active involvement in their children's learning process and the provision of home environments conducive to learning. There is a need to guide school principals and school stakeholders to make every educational effort to improve the current low matriculation pass rates in the ECP. Relevant recommendations and a suggested model to rectify the situation are proposed to ensure that all learners receive the quality of education they deserve. / Faculty of Education / D.Ed. The influence of school culture on HIV/AIDS beliefs in an urban school : an education management perspective

Siwela, Miriam Farai 10 1900 (has links)
The UNAIDS report on the global AIDS epidemic (2010:9-11), stated that for the estimated 33.3 million people living with HIV, sub-Saharan Africa has a staggering 22 500 000: South Africa having the highest figure of 5 600 000. The question arises: Why has HIV/AIDS spread faster in Africa than on any other continent, despite similar international strategies? The challenge in Africa is that several HIV/AIDS beliefs and misconceptions distorting management of HIV/AIDS. South African learners receive HIV/AIDS education from the school culture, community, government and the international community, whereas they should be partners in collaborative education: yet, they are not. The research finding indicated that for effective educational strategies, education managers should be aware of these different voices affecting HIV/AIDS education. Education managers should be the main voice in dealing with this menacing epidemic. Countries that have approached HIV/AIDS scientifically and speak with one voice successfully reduced their HIV/AIDS statistics. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Ed. (Education Management)

Managing the quality of learning in higher education through a hybrid study approach

Van Tonder, Silna 02 1900 (has links)
Technology and globalisation has shaped the experiences and expectations of adult learners in the 21st century. How adults learn and what they want to learn is highly influenced by the world they live in at any given time. The need for customisation, extending traditional learning experiences into new learning experiences will address the quality and value of higher education learning in South Africa. Restructuring of current programmes to be more flexible, accessible, interactive, that supports collaboration of learning activities and accommodates different learning styles, will enrich the adult learners’ learning experience and quality of learning. In suggesting the use of an alternative learning strategy, the use of a hybrid study approach (HSA) has been suggested and investigated. Limited research has been conducted in the use of a hybrid study approach (HSA) and more on what has been said was conducted on pure online learning, therefore this study focused on managing the quality of learning in higher education through a hybrid study approach (HSA). Since the researcher’s interest was to gain insight and understanding of learners’, tutors’ and institutional managements’ perceptions, understanding, concerns and experiences in their real world conditions when using a hybrid study approach (HSA), the qualitative research method was applied. The researcher focused on the micro-level of managing quality of learning by assessing the ‘learning’ when learning with technology. The study adhered to ethical principles and techniques to enhance the validity of the findings. The study found that a need for redress and reform of training and education in South Africa, especially with the integration of technology in higher education, extending into a hybrid study approach (HSA), which is in harmony with international standards of academic quality, knowledge, expertise and skills is needed in a changing global economy. A one-for-all learning approach was found not well suited for the needs of society today and does not foster an all-inclusive learning approach. The move to a knowledge society where learners are interconnected and where information circulate around the world faster than ever, it is evident that much learning occurs in a social environment and does not happen in splendid isolation. It was found evident that life demands and other different roles adult learners need to fulfill, adults intentionally search for educational settings that support their way of learning. / Education Leadership and Management / M. The compliance of selected schools in Swaziland with law and policy on corporal punishment

Shongwe, Elmon Jabulane 12 1900 (has links)
The researcher aimed to investigate the laws and policies regulating the use of corporal punishment in Swaziland schools by benchmarking these against HRL, and to investigate the non-compliance of selected schools in the Hhohho and Manzini regions with these legal prescripts. This was done in the two participating schools in the study. The study employed the qualitative approach, using two cases to source the information from the participants. Interviews and questionnaires were used to collect the data from the participants. The principals and their deputies were interviewed, whilst the teachers and learners responded to questionnaires. The literature review revealed that the teachers tend not to adhere to the prescripts in respect of the abuse of corporal punishment. The literature review focusing on the Swaziland situation brought to light that the teachers go beyond the legal prescripts when administering corporal punishment. The results indicated that in Swaziland corporal punishment is legal while, according to the Human Rights Law, it is a crime. The study indicated that teachers do not adhere to the legal prescripts on corporal punishment. Of the ten requirements for corporal punishment, the teachers complied fully with only two. It was also found that the teachers were not conversant with the legal prescripts. Some of the requirements did not seem viable to them to comply with. The researcher recommended that the Swaziland Constitution be aligned with the Human Rights Law, and that principals monitor the abuse of corporal punishment. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. No. of bitstreams: 1 Claudio Luiz de Souza Silva.pdf: 624448 bytes, checksum: 6747492cc35b7d9403254701436d3285 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-10-08 / The technological evolution extended connections, made a big quantity of information available and revolutionalized knowledge, creating new possibilities for storage, management and transmission. The drawbacks concerning adaptability of the organizational traditional structures related to College Education institutions to the new challenges, are leading the organizations to break up with traditional patterns of management and structure, which are still attached to the industrial society of development pattern. The quest is for the lessening of the gap between the technological transformation speed and the changes in the organization, in a new society coined as the knowledge society. This article, besides being a circumstantial description, aims at accurately analyzing an experience related to exploiting and constructing a new methodology of management. It looks forward to bringing light on a tension generated among the new social environment - caused by higher density of knowledge in productive processes-, and transformation difficulties in universities. This study was put forward through documental analysis, questionnaires and interviews with professors, coordinators and the board of directors of the Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Santos campus. Conclusions point to the possibility of reasoning the proposal to a new pattern of management, according to an aspect shown by the study, as peculiar to Unifesp Santos proposal, as follows: flexible organizations work better in the knowledge society, since decisions can be made at the end or at any point of the net. Hierarchical organizations work better during periods of constant and stable markets, despite being totally inadequate during periods of flow, like the one that identifies the society of knowledge. Its managerial procedures are way too rigid to adapt to quick changes under market conditions / A evolução das tecnologias ampliou as conexões, tornou disponível uma grande quantidade de informações e revolucionou o conhecimento, com novas possibilidades para sua estocagem, gestão e transmissão.
