Étude numérique de la dynamique des défauts d’alignement des précipités γ’ dans les superalliages monocristallins à base de nickel / Numerical study of defect dynamics in γ’-precipitate aligments in single-crystal nickel-base superalloys

Degeiter, Matthieu 26 March 2019 (has links)
In multiphase alloys, internal elastic fields often arise as a result of a coherently adjusted misfit between the lattices of coexisting phases. Given their long-range and usually anisotropic nature, the interaction of these fields is known to significantly alter the kinetics of diffusion-controlled phase transformations, as well as influence the shapes and spatial arrangement of the misfitting precipitates. In the microstructure of single-crystal nickel-base superalloys, obtained by precipitation of the L12-ordered γ’ phase in the FCC γ matrix, elasticity leads to the formation of nearly periodic alignments of the cuboidal γ’ precipitates. However, the γ/γ’ microstructure systematically displays defects in the precipitate alignment: branches, macro-dislocations and chevron patterns. We first address the question of the origin of these alignment defects. Stability analyses of the periodic arrangement of elastically interacting precipitates are carried out. Contrary to the expected stability, the semi-analytical calculations revealed the periodic distribution of cubic γ‘ precipitates to be unstable against specific perturbation modes. The main instabilities are the [100] longitudinal mode and the [110] transverse mode, and their instability range is analyzed with respect to the elastic anisotropy. The consequences of these unstable modes are investigated using a classic phase field method, by modeling the evolution of periodic microstructures undergoing small initial perturbations. We show the expression of the instabilities mainly proceeds by the evolution of the precipitate shapes, and leads to the formation of patterns which were related to experimental microstructures. Specifically, the [110] transverse instability is responsible for the formation of chevron patterns. The effects of the volume fraction and of an inhomogeneity on the C’ shear modulus on the stability of the arrangement are studied, and we show the role they play in the partial stabilization of the periodic distribution, though the [100] longitudinal mode always remains unstable. In phase field calculations carried out in previous studies, the dynamics of alignment defects are analyzed by means of topological parameters derived from pattern formation theory. During annealing, branches and macro-dislocations were observed to migrate in the microstructure according to climbing and gliding mechanisms. We then use a new formulation of phase field models, intrinsically discrete, in which the interfaces are resolved with essentially one grid point with no pinning on the grid and an accurate rotational invariance. This approach, known as the Sharp Phase Field Method (S-PFM), is implemented on a FCC grid and accounts for the four translational variants of the γ’ precipitates. We show that the S-PFM allows for the modeling of large-scale microstructures, with several thousand precipitates both in two and three dimensions, and provides access to statistical information on the microstructure evolution and on the the dynamics of alignment defects. We finally discuss the perspective of modeling the evolution of the γ/γ’ microstructure at the macroscale by means of a description of the defect dynamics in the precipitate alignments.

Influence d’une texturation déformable sur l’adhésion et la friction / Influence of deformable texturation on the adhesion and the friction properties

Dies-Diverchy, Laëtitia 25 September 2015 (has links)
When two objects are in contact, an adhesion experiment is carried out if they are separated and a friction experience if one object slides on the other. A fundamental parameter which controls the adhesion and friction forces is the real area of contact between the surfaces which is largely determined by the surface roughness. To better understand the role of roughness, adhesion and friction experiments were performed with spheres of PDMS elastomer and textured surfaces (hard or soft). The latter’s roughness is modeled by an hexagonal network of cylindrical pillars with micrometrical dimensions and spacing. In adhesion experiments, a JKR set up (for Johnson, Kendall and Roberts) was used to observe the contact between an elastic sphere and a textured surface while controlling the force between the surfaces. At low normal force, the sphere remains at the top of the pillars and the contact is called "top". When the force between the surfaces increases, a full area of contact, where pillars are collapsed ("intimate contact"), appears in the center contact, surrounded by a crown of "top" contact. A model of evolution of this intimate contact which takes into account the adhesion between the pillars and the mechanical properties of surfaces has been achieved. Furthermore, it was possible to measure effective energies of adhesion between the surfaces using a similar analysis to the classical JKR analysis. Studying the evolution of these adhesion energies as a function of the pillars’ surface density below the sphere-plan contact proved to be a challenging task. At last, measurements of the pull off force were realised, corroborating the important role of the nature of contact on the evolution of effectif energies of adhesion. For friction experiments, a tribometer developed in the laboratory was used to measure the dynamic frictional force. During these experiments, the two kinds of contact previously reported were observed. When the contact remains "top", it is natural to introduce a friction stress equal to the friction force divided by the real area of contact. It has been shown that friction stress increases on textured surfaces (relative to the smooth case) and that this increase depends in a complex manner on the geometry of the pillars. Moreover, it has been shown that for small curvature radii of the friction spheres, the friction stress is no longer independent of the real area of contact. Finally, we have shown that the friction stress in the zone of intimate contact is the same as on smooth surfaces. The experimental results obtained in this thesis will serve to validate future numerical models.

Konsumenters betalningsvilja för Kravmärkningen : En analys av faktorer som påverkar konsumenters betalningsvilja av utvalda livsmedelsvaror / Consumers willingness to pay for the ecolabel Krav : An analysis of the factors affecting consumers willingness to pay for selected groceries

Aldén, Emma, Linnéa, Andersson January 2019 (has links)
The ecolabel Krav exists to promote organic food production. The label has existed for a long time and has grown to be a well-recognized brand. How well the label works to influence consumption is something worth investigate more closely. Since the ecolabeled food are generally more expensive to produce, and thus get a higher market price, consumers must have a desire to pay the higher price. The purpose of this thesis is to examine whether the willingness to pay actually exists among students. The included theories are income elasticity, price elasticity, external effects and nudging. These together with previous research have discussed the factors concerning consumers behavior. A survey has also been conducted to examine students knowledge concerning the ecolabel Krav, and to test their willingness to pay for selected conventional and Krav labelled groceries. In addition to the survey, information has been collected through an email correspondence with the store manager at Maxi ICA Stormarknad Linköping to get information about possible strategies the grocery store use. The study shows that consumers are well informed about the existence of Krav as an ecolabel, but the knowledge is poor regarding the work Krav is performing and the purpose of it. We have generally observed that there are fewer individuals choosing the ecolabel Krav over conventional, the result differs between groceries. We have observed several connections regarding the factor income, the higher income ranges seem to be a synonym with the highest willingness to pay for Bregott. For the eggs, we cannot see any clear connection between the higher income ranges and the higher willingness to pay. Another factor that has high impact on the willingness to pay is the price, when a bigger price difference between conventional and Krav groceries exist, this results in a connection that more individuals chose the conventional option. Individual preferences of ecolabels show that a certain awareness exist, but that there is a difference in awareness and action. Which previous research strengthens. Preferences does not determine consumption in all cases, instead price seems to be the deciding factor. This can be based on the selected population which are students.

Essays on hours worked, time allocation and their implications for labour market outcomes / Essais sur la dispersion des heures, la répartition du temps et leurs conséquences sur les résultats du marché du travail

Vivian, Lara 14 December 2018 (has links)
Earnings inequality and job polarization have increased in a number of countries during the last decades, raising concerns of fairness and fostering debates on the implications for redistributive policies. This thesis asks two main questions. The first concerns the relevance of hours worked and their dispersion for earnings inequality, while the second question investigates the role of female labour supply in explaining the increase in job polarization. The first chapter uses data for the USA, the UK, Germany, and France and examines how earnings inequality is affected by the dispersion of working hours. The main result of this exercise is that hours dispersion can account for over a third of earnings inequality in some countries and that the relevance of the correlation between wages and working hours has been growing over time. The second chapter builds on the results of the previous one and explores the forces behind the upward trend of the correlation between wages and working hours. We find that greater aggregate output volatility and stricter labour market regulation tend to reduce the elasticity, while a greater trade share in an industry raises it. Finally, the third chapter investigates the relevance of female employment for job polarization in Germany. The analysis focuses on the role of high-skilled females in the evolution of a market for home production substitutes and finds that when top-employed females work more hours, low-skilled women are more likely to be employed.

Caracterização vibracional e térmica de filmes poliméricos utilizados como substrato em curativos adesivos / Vibrational and thermal characterization of polymeric films used as substrate in adhesive tapes

Manz, Daniela 13 April 2007 (has links)
A polymeric film must have low elasticity modulus and good water vapor permeation to be used in the production of non perforated adhesive tapes. Low modulus is desirable to provide comfort sensation as the consumer moves the part of his or her body in which the tape is applied on, mainly in the articulations regions, as elbows and knees. The importance of good water vapor permeation is related, mainly in the case of non perforated adhesive tapes with the continuous loss of water by the skin. If the film does not allow the release of the water continuously lost by the skin to the environment, the skin will become very sensitiveness as a result of over hydration. This work presents a study of water permeability and a thermal and vibrational characterization of a polymeric film composed of three different polymers developed to replace the adhesive not perforated polyurethane tape providing lower cost. Besides characterization a test of Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) was performed. Each polymer present in the film composition was analyzed and the results as Tm and chemical structure of Lotader® e Lotryl® were compared with the producer data. It was verified that the properties of elasticity modulus and water vapor permeability of the new material developed are worse than polyurethane so the substitution can not be performed. However, the work provided a better understanding of the factors that influences the elasticity modulus and water vapor permeability of the new material.

O método de Galerkin descontínuo aplicado na investigação de um problema de elasticidade anisotrópica / The discontinuous Galerkin method applied to the investigation of an anisotropic elasticity problem

Sampaio, Maria do Socorro Martins 08 July 2009 (has links)
The equilibrium problem without body force of an anisotropic sphere under radial compression that is uniformly distributed on the sphere\'s boundary is investigated in the context of the classical linear elasticity theory. The solution of this problem predicts the unacceptable phenomenon of self-intersection in a vicinity of the center of the sphere for a given range of material parameters. This phenomenon can be eliminated in the context of a theory that minimizes the total potential energy of classical linear elasticity subjected to the restriction that the deformation field be injective. Two formulations of the Finite Element Method using Discontinuous Galerkin (MEFGD) are used to obtain approximate solutions for the unconstrained problem. The first formulation of the MEFGD approximates both the displacement and the strain fields. The consideration of the strain as an additional field in the formulation of the MEFGD increases the number of degrees of freedom associated to the finite elements and, therefore, the computational cost. With the objective of reducing the number of degrees of freedom, an alternative formulation of the MEFGD is introduced in this work. In this formulation, the strain field is not obtained directly from the inversion of the resulting linear system of equations, but from a post-processing calculation using the approximate displacement field. The approximate solutions obtained with both formulations of the MEFGD are compared with the exact solution of the problem without restriction and with approximate solutions obtained with the Finite Element Method using Classical Galerkin (MEFGC). Both formulations of the MEFGD yield better approximations for the exact solution than the approximations obtained with the MEFGC. The errors between the exact solution and the approximate solutions obtained with the alternative formulation of the MEFGD are slightly higher than the corresponding errors obtained with the original formulation of the MEFGD. These errors are compensated by the fact that the alternative formulation requires less computational effort than the computational effort required by the original formulation. This work serves as a basis for the study of problems with the injectivity restriction using the discontinuous Galerkin method.

Estudo da resistência e da deformabilidade da alvenaria de blocos de concreto submetida a esforços de compressão / Study of strength and curved stress/strain relationship of blockwork masonry walls under compression

Juste, Andrea Elizabeth 03 August 2001 (has links)
The study of strength and the curved stress/strain relationship of blockwork masonry walls is basic for the material characterization and the development of structural analysis of blockwork walls. This work deals with that subject, aiming at the evaluation of the main elastic parameters and the strength of concrete blockwork walls: the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity for masonry in two orthogonal directions, parallel and perpendicular to bed joints. An experimental program was developed to evaluate the influence of the strength of blocks and mortar, and the load application direction on the mechanical behavior of ungrouted concrete block masonry under compression. A series of laboratory tests was carried out with blocks, mortar, prisms of three blocks and wallets (80 cm x 80 cm). It was impossible to obtain acceptable correlations of the defined variables, using statistical inference. However, tendencies of the specimens behavior were obtained, confirming the influence of mortar and block properties on the structural behavior of concrete blockwork walls under compression

On the behavior of a linear elastic peridynamic material / Sobre o comportamento de um material peridinâmico elástico linear

Seitenfuss, Alan Bourscheidt 19 April 2017 (has links)
The peridynamic theory is a generalization of classical continuum mechanics and takes into account the interaction between material points separated by a finite distance within a peridynamic horizon δ. The parameter δ corresponds to a length scale and is treated as a material property related to the microstructure of the body. Since the balance of linear momentum is written in terms of an integral equation that remains valid in the presence of discontinuities, the peridynamic theory is suitable for studying the material behavior in regions with singularities. The first part of this work concerns the evaluation of the properties of a linear elastic peridynamic material in the context of a three-dimensional state-based peridynamic theory, which uses the difference displacement quotient field in the neighborhood of a material point and considers both length and relative angle changes. This material model is based upon a free energy function that contains four material constants, being, therefore, different from other peridynamic models found in the literature, which contain only two material constants. Using convergence results of the peridynamic theory to the classical linear elasticity theory in the limit of small horizons and a correspondence argument between the free energy function and the strain energy density function from the classical theory, expressions were obtained previously relating three peridynamic constants to the classical elastic constants of an isotropic linear elastic material. To calculate the fourth peridynamic material constant, which couples both bond length and relative angle changes, the correspondence argument is used once again together with the strain field of a linearly elastic beam subjected to pure bending. The expression for the fourth constant is obtained in terms of the Poisson\'s ratio and the shear elastic modulus of the classical theory. The validity of this expression is confirmed through the consideration of other experiments in mechanics, such as bending of a beam by terminal loads and anti-plane shear of a circular cylinder. In particular, numerical results indicate that the expressions for the constants are independent of the experiment chosen. The second part of this work concerns an investigation of the behavior of a one-dimensional linearly elastic bar of length L in the context of the peridynamic theory; especially, near the ends of the bar, where it is expected that the behavior of the peridynamic bar may be very different from the behavior of a classical linear elastic bar. The bar is in equilibrium without body force, is fixed at one end, and is subjected to an imposed displacement at the other end. The bar has micromodulus C, which is related to the Young\'s modulus E in the classical theory through different expressions found in the literature. Depending on the expression for C, the displacement field may be singular near the ends, which is in contrast to the linear behavior of the displacement field observed in classical linear elasticity. In spite of the above, it is also shown that the peridynamic displacement field converges to its classical counterpart as the peridynamic horizon tends to zero.

Estimation of kind of tissue in coronary structure using the level of deformation in intravascular ultrasound images.

Moraes, Matheus Cardoso 07 December 2012 (has links)
Coronary diseases are the cause of death of millions of people annually. One of these dysfunctions is the coronary atherosclerosis, which is the accumulation of lipidic, fibrous and calcified plaques in the coronary wall. This accumulation may cause thrombosis, myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death. Nonetheless, the kind of plaques offers different levels of dangerousness and elasticity. The highly lipidic plaques are very elastic, offers high risk, while the calcified and fibrous are more stable and less elastic. The Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) is the reference medical imaging modality for diagnostic and treatment of coronary diseases. However, the conventional IVUS images provides only anatomical vessel and plaque information; therefore, it is very important the creation of methods and techniques that could make objective the analysis of this information. Due to that, and taking into account the spatial and time information of IVUS images, this work presents methods of segmentation, and feature extraction of lesions, which make possible the quantization of spatial information, and the discrimination of high, and low risk plaques. Consequently, subsidies for diagnoses and more appropriate therapeutic procedures are provided. The segmentation method combines Wavelet, Otsu, and Mathematical Morphology, for the vessel wall delineation. The method evaluation was performed using 1300 IVUS images, resulting in 92, 72% and 91, 9% of true positives, and 10, 7% and 9, 1% of false positives, for the lumen and media adventitia border, respectively. Additionally, a simple method, for plaque characterization using the regarding mechanical properties was created. The procedure relies on computing an index, ratio of plaque area variation, in acquired images pre and post deformation procedure of vessel wall and plaques. Phantoms were used for evaluation. The results obtained by the proposed index, and a widely used one was compared. A correlation up to 99%, a strong agreement with Bland Altman, and similar Histograms between the two indexes demonstrated the equivalence between them; however, the proposed index is much simpler.

Retornos do P&D e incentivos fiscais: uma análise para o caso brasileiro / Returns to R&D and tax incentives: an analysis for the Brasilian case

Santana, Bruna Goussain 26 June 2017 (has links)
The objective of this dissertation is to contribute to the empirical literature on returns to R&D in Brazil, in particular, the tax incentives of Lei do Bem (Lei no 11.196/2005) on the total factor productivity (TFP) of the beneficiary firms. In order to do this, we have organized this study around two specific objectives: the first is to verify the impact of the tax incentive on the R&D efforts of the beneficiary firms through the additionality test. The second is to estimate the elasticity of TFP with respect to R&D and the impact of the treatment of the Lei do Bem on this elasticity. Finally, we analyze the indirect impact of the Lei do Bem on TFP that occurs through the increase in expenditures in R&D. This evaluation was carried out based on estimations of econometric models with microdata from Brazilian industrial firms for the period 2003 to 2013, applying the procedure of Propensity Score Matching (PSM) associated with estimates of Fixed Effects, and Blundell and Bond (1998). Among the results, we found that only the estimates for the period from 2006 to 2009 exceeded the upper limit of the tax waiver, which means that part of the increase observed for the period from 2010 to 2013 must have occurred as a substitution of public expenditure, evidencing, at least partially, the crowding-out effect. The results of the second stage of the study suggest that the law has positive indirect effects on firm productivity, but nonetheless, the elasticity of TFP is below the median of international studies.
