Bednář, Eduard January 2016 (has links)
This thesis deals with the simulation of fluid dynamics in environmental scanning electron microscope and evaluate solvers setup, the degree of discretization, choice of turbulent model and proposal optimal design of environmental scanning electron microscope. The theoretical part describes the issue of environmental scanning electron microscopy, software SolidWorks and ANSYS Fluent, basic equations describing fluid status, fluid turbulence, the mean free path of molecules and electron scattering. The practical part of the thesis is to create the model of environmental scanning electron microscope AQUASEM II in CAD system SolidWorks and simulation of fluid flow in the sample chamber before aperture PLA1 by ANSYS Fluent. A series of simulations provided the perfect setting solver. These knowledge are used in the second stage of the practical part, where is proposed optimal shape of the table sample and the input aperture PLA1.

Learning in student projects and morphological analysis of Arctic particles

Wahlberg, Alexander January 2012 (has links)
This master thesis is divided into two parts, one pedagogical and one engineering. The purpose of the pedagogical part of this master thesis was to investigate how students learn during projects. At the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, three larger student projects occurred where the students themselves developed a probe that was launched into the atmosphere. The supervisors of the projects wanted to find out how the students learn during the project. The thesis includes in-depth interviews with current and former university students. In order to compare and gain new perspectives on learning, the study also included interviews with high school students to identify their corresponding experiences of learning in their final projects in Swedish upper secondary school. The result from this study shows that the students learn through participating inactivities, collaboration and communication. Giving the students responsibility, a mutual goal and an important assignment makes them collaborate and learn from experience through reflection. The purpose of the engineering part of this master thesis was to investigate samples that were collected during the Arctic Summer Cloud Ocean Study in the summer of 2008. The samples were studied by using a scanning electron microscope. The results of the thesis are consistent with former studies on samples collected in Arctic. The images from the microscope showed microgels and how the gels assembled into larger particles, particles which can play a crucial role in the formation of clouds.

Using internet -enabled remote instrumentation for research and training in physics: Evaluation of different diffusion barriers for silver metallization

Majiet, Siradz January 2007 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / The growth of the Internet has led to many interesting developments for both educational and commercial purposes. In this project an attempt was made to use the Internet for a research purpose to facilitate the determination of the thermal stability of diffusion barriers. Another purpose of this thesis is to investigate the teaching and training use of the Internet through the development of online interactive tools and activities as well as materials. The training aspects are mentioned as it is hoped that this thesis can serve as a form of documentation of the use of the Internet, while the central part was the determination of thermal stability of TiN, TaN and TiW diffusion barriers on Ag. The fact that most advanced instruments are computer driven or can be interfaced with a computer was exploited to set up a virtual laboratory facility through which sophisticated and scarce instrumentation can be remotely accessed. The major piece of equipment that forms part of the laboratory is a four-point probe furnace at Arizona State University, Tempe, USA. The Internet made it possible to use the facility to perform an online experiment to determine the effectiveness of different diffusion barriers for silver metallisation. This was accomplished by measuring the resistance of the different samples remotely over the Internet through the control of the four-point probe furnace at Arizona State University. Four types of analysis were used to determine the thermal stability of the diffusion barriers, namely the Scanning Electron Microscopy, Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry, X-Ray Diffraction and resistivity measurements. Similar facilities exist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, USA, where a range of different electron microscopes can be accessed remotely via the Internet. The measurements of the diffusion barriers form the main part of this work. However, the other aspects required for the use of the Internet in such a system, such as the development of a website to receive and upload scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, the development of the virtual scanning electron microscope and the learning of the Virtual Reality Markup Language are also included.

Piezoresistive Nano-Composites: Characterization and Applications

Hyatt, Thomas B. 25 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Innovative multifunctional materials are essential to many new sensor applications. Piezoresistive nano-composites make up a promising class of such materials that have the potential to provide a measurable response to strain over a much wider range than typical strain gages. Commercial strain gages are currently dominated by metallic sensors with a useable range of a few percent strain at most. There are, however, many applications that would benefit from a reliable wide-range sensor. These might include the study of explosive behavior, instrumentation of flexible components, motion detection for compliant mechanisms and hinges, human-technology interfaces, and a wide variety of bio-mechanical applications where structural materials may often be approximated as elastomeric. In order to quantify large strains, researchers often use optical methods which are tedious and difficult. This thesis proposes a new material and technique for quantifying large strain (up to 40%) by use of piezoresistive nano-composite strain gages. The nano-composite strain gage material is manufactured by suspending nickel nano-strands within a biocompatible silicone matrix. Study and design iteration on the strain gage material requires an improved understanding of the electrical behavior and conduction path within the material when strained. A percolation model has been suggested for numerical approximations, but has only provided marginal results for lack of data. Critical missing information in the percolation model is the nano-strand cluster size, and how that size changes in response to strain. These data are gathered using a dynamic technique in the scanning electron microscope called voltage contrast. Cluster sizes were found to vary in size by approximately 6% upon being strained to 10%. A feasibility study is also conducted on the nano-composite to show its usability as a strain gage. High Displacement Strain Gages (HDSGs) were manufactured from the nano-composite. HDSGs measured the strain of bovine ligament under prescribed loading conditions. Results demonstrate that HDSGs are an accurate means for measuring ligament strains across a broad spectrum of applied deformations.

Analysis Of Microtextures On Quartz Sand Grains Of Triassic Age, From The Minas Basin - Cobequid Bay Area (Bay of Fundy), Nova Scotia

Davis, Patricia Marian 05 1900 (has links)

Triassic sandstones form rapidly eroding cliffs around much of the Minas Basin, Nova Scotia. The sand eroded from these cliffs is one major source of the modern intertidal sands. Wave erosion of the cliffs locally produces a small sand beach at the high tide level.

Eight samples were examined using the Scanning Electron Microscope: two from the Triassic sandstones, and six from the high-tide beach below the cliffs. All samples contained rounded, as well as subrounded and subangular, quartz grains in the 0.5 - 1.00 mm size fraction. As the samples originated in the cliffs, abrasion by strong tidal currents cannot account for the rounded grain shape.

All grains studied had suffered some degree of diagenesis in the form of a precipitation coat. This was generally thicker on the rounded grains than on the more angular ones. The Triassic sandstone grains generally illustrated upturned plates, semiparallel steps, conchoidal breaks and a fine V-shaped pattern. The high beach grains illustrated upturned plates, V-shaped patterns, conchoidal breaks, greater rounding of featu res present and arc-shaped steps. Wehrfritz (1973) studied quartz grains from intertidal sand bars in the Minas Basin. He concluded that grains were considerably rounded by intertidal processes, and the frequency of V-shapes increased with grain roundness.

Although some rounding of the beach sands was inherited, wave and tidal action aided in rounding the features further. The initial rounding of the sand grains within the sandstones may have occurred during periods in the Triassic when they were exposed to wind or reworked in the lakes.
/ Thesis / Bachelor of Arts (BA)
