The development of music reading readiness in the elementary school program

McFarland, Jane, Sister January 1961 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Boston University / Purpose. It was the purpose of this study to analyze the musical experiences included in the elementary school, and to determine the direct effect of these experiences on musical growth in music reading readiness. Summary of the Findings. The literature revealed that the musical experiences, such as singing, rhythmic activities, playing instruments, listening, and the association of these experiences with music symbols are pertinent to music reading readiness. This study included the perusal of thirty one books, seven periodicals, twelve music texts and teacher manuals, two publications of learned organizations, and six theses. Each stressed the continuous developmental experiences which contribute to music reading readiness. The texts that dealt with music education in the elementary school traced developmental growth in reading readiness experiences through the first six grades. In the lower grades, emphasis was placed on developing awareness of sound and basic grasp of pitch and rhythmic patterns, always within a musical context of song literature. As the children proceeded through the intermediate grades progress in music was made through the development of increasing skills with symbols for rhythmic and tonal patterns. Thus music reading in the upper elementary grades was found to be built on continuously developing concepts and skills which were begun in the primary grades [TRUNCATED]

A Study to Determine the Need for Industrial Arts Activities for Enriching the Elementary Curriculum in the Fort Worth Public Schools

Leeth, James C. 08 1900 (has links)
Industrial arts has been taught in varying degrees in the elementary schools of Texas for a number of years. In some cases, industrial arts activities have been integrated with other subject matter areas, and in some cases they have been taught as a separate subject. There have been several studies made concerning what the nature and extent of industrial arts activities should be at the elementary level. Research indicates, however, that there has been no study made to determine if industrial arts activities could be used to enrich the elementary curriculum in the Fort Worth Independent School District. The problem of this study is to determine if there is a need for industrial arts activities to enrich the elementary curriculum in the Fort Worth Independent School District, Fort Worth, Texas.

Recreational Technology And Its Impact On The Learning Development Of Children Ages 4-8: A Meta-analysis For The 21st Century Cl

Templeton, Joey 01 January 2007 (has links)
This research focuses on technology (specifically video games and interactive software games) and their effects on the cognitive development of children ages 4-8. The research will be conducted as a meta-analysis combining research and theory in order to determine if the educational approach to this age group needs to change/adapt to learners who have been affected by this technology. I will focus upon both the physical and mental aspects of their development and present a comprehensive review of current educational theory and practice. By examining current curriculum goals and cross-referencing them to research conducted in fields other than education (i.e. technology, child development, media literacy, etc.) I hope to demonstrate a need for change; and, at the end of my research, be able to make recommendations for curriculum adaptations that will work within the current educational structure. These recommendations will be made with respect to budget and time constraints.

Sonnenburg, Peter 25 November 2003 (has links)
Based on the analysis of 144 written narrations of primary schoolchildren, this thesis is contributing new findings in the area of narrative and writing research within the context of the GDR school system. In comparison with two previously published ontogenetically oriented studies of narrations by secondary schoolchildren and teenage groups, research focuses on the issue whether or not, and also how, this former work is still relevant in present time and for current research. It also discusses how the in this context of older children s narrations tested research instruments can be applied to primary schoolchildren s narrations. By triangulations of methods and combining text analyses, observations, and interviews, the author has expanded existing research instruments, and has thereby reached specific perceptions regarding narrative and writing research. The author proofed that some practices used in comparative research could also be used in primary schoolchildren s narrations. They require, however, an adaptation and an extension of methods, taking the children s age and development into account. This provides evidence that the characterisations of text structure, contents, and language criteria, which had been formulated by GDR language and didactic scholars, can be seen as generally valid and still up to date. This is emphasised by existence of certain features, found in the analysed narrations. Nevertheless, these findings have to be analysed in relation to age structure to avoid deficit theoretical consequences. The thesis concludes with an outlook on future research, and implications on school practice.

Guirado Serrat, Àngel 30 June 2008 (has links)
In this thesis, the factors influencing the beliefs of the teachers of primary school (pupils of 3-12 years old) and the members of the "EAP" (Psychopedagogy Assessors' Teams) towards the detection of gifted and high capabilities pupils are evaluated. The used instruments are the typical ones of naturalistic methodologies and quasi-experimental. The results obtained during three academic years from different information sources (interviews, description of cases, data analysis, legal regulations and two questionnaires, one for teachers and one for EAP members) are analysed. Results put into evidence a very low detection rate, insufficient legal regulations, weak diagnosis instruments, heterogeneous information in pupils' expedients and lack of teachers formation training. Contradictions are detected between the beliefs of the teachers and their practices at school. Finally, a redefinition of the concept of high capabilities-gifted pupils is proposed from the area of efficiency, of the profile and of the school performance.

Andrle, Jana January 2018 (has links)
This diploma tesis describes education students with different motherly language in the Czech Republic. On a theoretical level, it explains more common concepts of migration, as well as concepts related to the education of foreign students. It also introduces the number of foreign students attending Czech primary schools and primary schools in the capital city of Prague. The thesis describes the school legislation concerning education students with different motherly language, financing possibilities of the Czech language courses, and also presents with non-governmental non-profit organizations active in this field. On the practical level, the thesis focuses on different systems of education of students with a different motherly language in three primary schools in the capital city of Prague. The thesis describes how individual schools organize teaching of Czech as a second language, which support measures in the education of students with a different motherly language they provide, what special study materials they use and what extra services they offer to these students. The text compares these schools and suggests a possible improvement in the organization of education of students with a different motherly language at individual elementary schools.
