Economia de abastecimento em uma sociedade exportadora: o município de Pouso Alegre/MG na transição para o século XX / Economy of supply in an exporting society: the municipality of Pouso Alegre / MG in the transition to the XX century

Fernando Henrique do Vale 06 August 2018 (has links)
This research is part of the group of studies that study economic dynamics in the South of Minas Gerais, specifically between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a transition period for a capitalist society in which the country underwent modernization. Our object of study, Pouso Alegre, was consolidated as one of the main municipalities of the South of Minas in the period proposed in this study, because it possesses the greatest number of inhabitants of the region, being in a strategic point, which made it a kind of center supplier regional. Unlike other cities in the region, where economic dynamism was a result of the expansion of coffee production, in Pouso Alegre, supply agriculture was responsible for the growth and constitution of one of the most important regional markets in the South of Minas. With the documentation raised, the process of urbanization of the municipality was approached, through the Municipal Camera Acts and legislative documents; the real estate records showed us, starting from the transactions of rural and urban properties, the dynamics that took place in the spaces of the city and its districts; and finally, post-mortem inventories have given us clues about the establishment of the elite and the local wealth. With these documents and the other bibliographical readings, we began the construction of an economic history of Pouso Alegre and expanded that of the South of Minas region.

This research is to discuss the integration of mestizo subjects in Pernambuco colonial elite in the eighteenth century, especially in Recife and Olinda, trying to make understandable the context of miscegenation and social tension in living individuals and families, as well as the various strategies used by these mestizos to be inserted socially. As a starting point of our approach, we seek to focus attention to the meaning and scope of brown term, in Pernambuco, seeking to emphasize its peculiarities and differences compared to other regions of Brazil. As a result, we try to show, through an analysis of marriage records, the camera documents, charters, commitments of the brotherhoods, among others, many mulattos were made remarkable. Some of whom received favors of the Crown, were part of the Third Orders, others were great traders, soldiers, planters, officials of the Chamber of Recife, royal officials. Each sought in their own way, better take ownership of the various opportunities that the inclusion of certain web of relationships allowed. Through the trajectory of individuals and brown families, the narrative that follows search reconsider and re-evaluate interpretations of the composition of the eighteenth-century Pernambuco elite. Here we defend the idea that this elite did not have a specific color. Many individuals were also mixed positioned on top of a social hierarchy. The intention is not to show subjects browns exceptions in a state of upward mobility, but possibilities amid colonial dynamics. The trajectory of the legacies punctuated here demonstrates that social hierarchy was not rigid, there was a mobility was possible through numerous strategies used by many colored subjects.

The central objective of this work was to study the spread and control of arms at the Mariana in the first three decades of the eighteenth century and the role they are in the process of differentiation of individuals in a society marked by the culture of Ancient Regime. In this sense, we try to understand the principles of action of the crown through the law on weapons, its expression in the colony and the profile of the distribution of weapons among the settlers. The analysis of evidence allowed us to observe that despite the intention by the authorities to control the use of weapons, there was a significant spread of these instruments in relation to the various segments of the population. Noticed a higher concentration of armaments under the power of local elite, so that these actors had better able to provide services for the benefit of the empire, increasing your chances of negotiating with the Crown, in that the metropolis depended on the armed force of individuals to maintain order.

This work has the objective of analyzing the different performance of the social groups that composed the elite of the Termo de Pitangui between the years 1715 to 1760, paying attention to their different relations with the Crown. This theme involves the question of the conformation and legitimation of the power spaces in the locality and the strategies used by the actors, seeking to reach the highest levels of the social hierarchy. Thus, we sought to understand how the process of conquest and settlement in the region was related to the performance of Paulistas who frequently challenged the rules established by the metropolitan authorities to assert their particular interests. These individuals not only rebelled at times against the designs of the Crown, as they sought to subject and/or co-opt the other social groups that established themselves in the locality, basing themselves on their prerogatives as first conquerors. This position of insubordination explains the image traditionally related to the inhabitants of the Pitangui by the metropolitan authorities, during the first half of the eighteenth century, forged from a context marked by several conflicts and riots that occurred in the first two decades of seven hundred. On the other hand, we sought to confront the image of the rebel with the profile of another group in which its members behaved like faithful vassals, that is, those whose relationship with the Crown and its local authorities was based to a large extent on the provision of services to the monarchy and the consequent retribution of the same by the monarch, which guaranteed to these people a series of benefits and privileges, contributing much so that they occupied prominent places in the social pyramid. From this analysis, we also found trajectories from individuals who did not contest the power of the Crown of the region but who, at least apparently, did not participate in the municipal government, an alternative profile in the constitution of the colonial elite identity in Portuguese America.

Rejuvenating communism : the Communist Youth League as a political promotion channel in post-Mao China / Rajeunir le communisme : la Ligue de la Jeunesse Communiste comme voie d’ascension politique dans la Chine post-maoïste

Doyon, Jérôme 02 December 2016 (has links)
How does the Chinese Party-State renew its political elite and maintain its cohesion in the post-Mao era? This is a key question in order to understand the evolution of China’s political system and still the explanations one can find in the literature are far from satisfactory. I approach these questions through a unique account of the role played by the Chinese Communist Youth League (CYL) in terms of cadres’ recruitment and promotion since the 1980s. I show that due to post-Cultural Revolution politics and the need for leaders at the time to recruit loyal young cadres, a “sponsored mobility” system was developed to renew the Party-State’s elite. College students are recruited and trained through the Party’s youth organizations. They are put then on a unique promotion path, which includes specific opportunities and trainings, and which leads them to leadership position in the Party-State. In addition, through the various steps of the sponsored mobility process, the young recruits develop a specific social role as future officials and transform their social circles. As a result, they cultivate a political commitment to their career in the Party-State and to the survival of the regime. Finally, the decentralized nature of the Party-State and its youth organizations make it difficult for the young recruits to establish cohesive groups which could organize against the Party-State itself.

An exploratory study of the experiences of receiving funding support for elite sport in South Africa

Adom-Aboagye, Nana Akua Achiaa January 2015 (has links)
Magister Artium (Sport, Recreation and Exercise Science) - MA(SRES) / Despite government’s formation of financial support grants such as the Operational Excellence Programme to provide much needed assistance, South African elite athletes have not been performing to expectation at recent international championships, such as the Olympic Games. International experiences demonstrate the importance of a well-structured and implemented funding support system to improve elite athlete performance at international levels. This has led to questions of how to improve this situation for elite South African athletes who receive funding support from the South Africa Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee and to revisit the implementation of the funding support for elite athletes. This study will take, experiences of South African elite athletes as well as sport managers into consideration and will also look at international lessons of experience of the funding support of elite sport to provide improved options for financial support and elite athlete development. Using qualitative research methods, this study explored the underlying factors regarding funding support of elite athletes in South Africa based on experiences and perceptions of elite athletes. Within the context of the study, elite athletes would refer to senior track and field athletes and senior swimmers who had been a part of Team South Africa and represented the nation at international competitions. Data was collected in three ways: a) A literature review in the form of an analysis of the high performance policies of: the National Olympic Committee of South Africa and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee that has governed elite sport in South Africa post 1994 and the policies that govern high performance funding support within Athletics South Africa and Swimming South Africa; b) interviews with eight preselected elite athletes to discuss career performances and funding support received and c) interviews with four coaches/managers of the preselected elite athletes to discuss their perspectives on the funding support their athletes received. Strict ethics considerations were also adhered to insofar as written consent was obtained from all participants beforehand, as the intended interviews would be either audio recorded or video recorded. Pseudonyms were also used for participants with the assurance that participation was voluntary. The eventual findings of the study brought to light that the implementation of the funding support provided by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee was good in theory but not necessarily so in practice. Overall, participants were grateful for the support received but felt that certain changes needed to be considered going forward for the improvement of future performances.
