Simulating the Swedish Electric Energy Production : An optimization perspective

Swahn Azavedo, Michael January 2014 (has links)
Production of electric energy is continuously affected by many factors. Therefore, tools for predicting the future production are needed. In turn, the production affects the electric energy price, which is set on electric energy exchanges. This thesis is intended to find out if the software SDDP can be used for hydrothermal power production simulations in the Nord pool area. By building a simplified model of the electric energy production in Sweden with a focus on hydro, thermal and wind power, the intention is to see how the model is affected by different conditions. The investigated conditions are several; higher and lower water inflows to the hydro power reservoirs; different amounts of installed wind power production; different price levels of emission allowances for CO2. By using the simulation software SDDP, more wind power was seen to lower the electric energy prices, as well as reduce the need of transmission of power from the northern to the southern parts of Sweden. In the simulation, Sweden was divided into four areas, connected where the main bottlenecks in the power grid are located. Water inflows to the reservoirs are crucial in the model. Actual inflow data can be bought from SMHI. However, due to the limited thesis budget, estimations were constructed instead. The estimations were difficult to make and turned out to be too high. Consequently, no reliable evaluation of the SDDP software could be done using this data.

Non-Financial Returns of Enterprise-Led Development Assistance - A Study of Energy-Related Enterprises

Kolominskas, Chaim Unknown Date (has links)
The Rural Energy Enterprise Development (REED) initiative provides assistance to energy-related enterprises to prepare them for growth and to make eventual investments by mainstream financial partners less risky. This study assesses the non-financial returns of a number of REED-type enterprises and provides guidance for the selection and ongoing evaluation of these enterprises within the context of development interventions. This study concludes that desired development outcomes should provide the basis for programme objectives against which non-financial returns can be measured. However, qualitative information is also necessary, as the context within which an enterprise operates largely defines the importance of these returns. Further work to improve the understanding of this context is necessary prior to the development of a formalised monitoring programme. Limitations of the assessment process should be recorded and addressed through the ongoing review of the programme, other monitoring efforts and further research.

Silva, Luis Geraldo Gomes da January 2017 (has links)
Tese ( doutorado)- Universidade Federal do ABC. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Energia, 2017. / This research aims at contributing to the suppression of fatal work accidents in the electricity sector, discussing the problem on three fronts: a) extend the scope of the fatal work accident data banks to the entire electrical energy production chain including services of third-party companies; b) include in the fatal accidents databases information to assess the conditions under which accidents occurred and formulate solutions to avoid them in the future; c) to monitor and quantify, through Bayesian networks, the level of safety culture of the companies in the electricity sector, assuming an inverse correlation between the level of safety culture and the number of fatal accidents in these companies. The electricity sector is usually represented by the stages of generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. However, the electrical sector, considering its entire production chain, is much larger and 15 stages have been identified from primary energy prospecting to the decommissioning of facilities after their useful life. Regarding work accident databases, in Brazil there are three databases covering only the generation, transmission and distribution stages of the electricity sector. It was found that they do not present complete data to trace the root causes of accidents and identify possible solutions to avoid them in the future. For example, between 2009 and 2015, 69 self-employed workers and 380 outsourced workers died in the distribution stage without further details of the conditions under which these accidents occurred. The inclusion of thirdparty companies in the accounting of work-accident statistics can be a factor in improving the working conditions of the entire energy sector. The economic power of leading companies can demand from their partners better behavior in terms of work safety and suppression of fatal accidents. It was proposed a minimum database structure of work accidents in the electric sector with information that allows, among other objectives, the traceability and subsequent correction of accidental events. These items include the accident record number, name, type and area of work of the company, and opinions of the accident work safety monitoring system, including those from the CIPA, occupational physician, union and technical supervisor. Maintaining a level of safety culture in a company is important for the suppression of occupational accidents. A safety culture monitoring model based on Bayesian networks with 15 different variables was developed. These variables range from senior management engagement with work safety to workers training in the use of personal protective equipment. This quantitative model was able to capture differences in the safety culture level of 15 different electricity distribution companies and show a clear inverse correlation with the number of fatal accidents.

The residues from fruit and vegetables and domestic and industrial wastewater could be treated jointly by the process of anaerobic digestion resulting in the production of energy and a reduction in negative environmental impacts. The principal objective of this work was to study the kinetics of the process of anaerobic biostabilization of vegetable residual solids (RSV), treated at different concentrations of total solids with the view to optimizing energy production and anaerobic biostabilization. To execute this study a completely mixed, compartmentalized anaerobic reactor comprising three compartments separated by glass plates with unit volumes of 25 litres, was designed, installed and monitored,. The resulting products from anaerobic biostabiliztion in the form of semi-solids were monitored weekly except for pH, total alkalinity and volatile fatty acids which jointly with biogas production were monitored twice weekly during a the total monitoring period of 294 days. The work was divided into two stages. In the first stage a substrate comprising twelve different types of vegetable solid waste with a total solids concentration equal to 75, 4 g/L was used. In the second stage the concentration of total solids applied to compartments C1, C2 and C3 were 40, 22.6 and 23.2 g/L respectively, with the with the level of humidity being adjusted by the addition of domestic sewage. The maximum percentage of methane in the biogas was 61.5% obtained in the first compartment (C1) of the reactor during the second experimental stage. The maximum kinetic constants for bioconversion (k) for COD total and soluble, TKN and sulphate during the first stage were respectively 3.86 x 10-2, 3.01 x 10-2, 4.75 x 10-2 and 2.13 x 10-2d-1. During the second stage of the study the values maximum obtained were 1.28 x 10-2, 1.90 x 10-2, 2.90 x 10-2 and 3.22 x 10-2d-1, for COD total and soluble, TKN and sulphate respectively.

Sato, Alino Massaiuqui January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the teaching of the sustainable production of electrical energy through didactic games. This issue is of great relevance for the formation of the citizen, contributing to the awareness of the need to combat global warming. As the population grows, so does the consumption of electricity and primary sources of clean energy become imperative. The generation of renewable electric energy takes advantage of the resources of the winds, the sun, the sea and the organic materials converting into electric energy. The work was based on the theory of game-based learning discussed by Wallon, Huizinga and Chateau, presented in the form of a teaching sequence applied to physics students of the 3rd year of a public High School in the city of Cotia -SP. It is possible that Long Term Hydrothermal Scheduling (LTHS) problem is close to attaining CEP¿s assumptions, although it does not attain them theoretically. Thus, the objective of this dissertation is to analyze the validity of CEP in Dynamic Programming framework applied to single reservoir LTHS problem and to evaluate the impacts of each CEP¿s condition violation. The CEP¿s conditions were progressive analyzed by comparison of the considered models results from an ideal case where theoretically assumptions hold until a case study closer to reality. Slight differences were observed between deterministic and stochastic operation policies, indicating that LTHS model is close to attain the CEP¿s conditions. An immediate consequence of this study would be that deterministic approach for the single reservoir LTHS problem can be as effective as stochastic ones / Mestrado / Energia Eletrica / Mestra em Engenharia Elétrica

Downscaling wind energy resource from mesoscale to local scale by nesting and data assimilation with a CFD model / Descente en échelle de la ressource en énergie éolienne de la mésoéchelle à l'échelle locale par imbrication et assimilation de données à l'aide d'un modèle de CFD

Duraisamy Jothiprakasam, Venkatesh 14 May 2014 (has links)
The development of wind energy generation requires precise and well-established methods for wind resource assessment, which is the initial step in every wind farm project. During the last two decades linear flow models were widely used in the wind industry for wind resource assessment and micro-siting. But the linear models inaccuracies in predicting the wind speeds in very complex terrain are well known and led to use of CFD, capable of modeling the complex flow in details around specific geographic features. Mesoscale models (NWP) are able to predict the wind regime at resolutions of several kilometers, but are not well suited to resolve the wind speed and turbulence induced by the topography features on the scale of a few hundred meters. CFD has proven successful in capturing flow details at smaller scales, but needs an accurate specification of the inlet conditions. Thus coupling NWP and CFD models is a better modeling approach for wind energy applications. A one-year field measurement campaign carried out in a complex terrain in southern France during 2007-2008 provides a well documented data set both for input and validation data. The proposed new methodology aims to address two problems: the high spatial variation of the topography on the domain lateral boundaries, and the prediction errors of the mesoscale model. It is applied in this work using the open source CFD code Code_Saturne, coupled with the mesoscale forecast model of Météo-France (ALADIN). The improvement is obtained by combining the mesoscale data as inlet condition and field measurement data assimilation into the CFD model. Newtonian relaxation (nudging) data assimilation technique is used to incorporate the measurement data into the CFD simulations. The methodology to reconstruct long term averages uses a clustering process to group the similar meteorological conditions and to reduce the number of CFD simulations needed to reproduce 1 year of atmospheric flow over the site. The assimilation procedure is carried out with either sonic or cup anemometers measurements. First a detailed analysis of the results obtained with the mesoscale-CFD coupling and with or without data assimilation is shown for two main wind directions, including a sensitivity study to the parameters involved in the coupling and in the nudging. The last part of the work is devoted to the estimate of the wind potential using clustering. A comparison of the annual mean wind speed with measurements that do not enter the assimilation process and with the WAsP model is presented. The improvement provided by the data assimilation on the distribution of differences with measurements is shown on the wind speed and direction for different configurations

The possibility of going off grid : A study of how a farm house can be transformed into an off grid house in regards to its energy consumption.

Mahfoud, Hala, Oudah, Allachen January 2021 (has links)
The term off grid refers to being disconnected from the electrical grid in addition to self-management of the water and sewer systems. The application of off grid houses contributesto fulfilling UN’s Agenda 2030 as well as Sweden's climate plan for year 2040, by supporting the transition from using fossil fuel to renewable energy sources. A challenging aspect of the off grid application is obtaining the required amounts of energy for heating and electricity. This thesis aims to investigate the possibility of transforming an old farm to an off grid house inregards to its energy consumption. The investigation is carried out by examining the renovation measurements needed, the amount of energy that can be produced by renewable energy sources and how much excess energy needs to be stored for later use. The research is based on a case study of a reference house located in Ljungbyhed. The program VIP-Energy is used to carry out calculations that will aid in obtaining data in regards to energy and effect needs. Three cases are constructed to evaluate the possibility of covering the energy demand by implementing either wind power, solar power or a system that includes a combination of both. A hydrogen storage system is chosen to complement the off grid systems constructed. In the first case a wind turbine with a wingspan of 16 m is required to cover the energy demand. Case number 2 involves a 20 m2 system of solar thermal collectors and a solar cell system that covers the rest of the roof area to supply the house with the energy needed. In Case 3, the energy demand is met by using a 10 m2 solar thermal collector system, wind turbine with a wingspan of 10 m and a 140 m2 solar cell system.
