L'enseignement supérieur américain face aux enjeux de la mondialisation : l'exemple des écoles d'ingénieurs américaines / The higher education system in America facing the challenges of globalization : the case of the schools of engineering

La thèse a pour objectif de mettre en évidence les moyens mis en oeuvre par le système universitaire américain pour conserver une position dominante sur le plan de la recherche et de l’innovation. Elle rend compte des stratégies de recrutement et de formation des universités américaines principalement orientées vers l’international en matière d’excellence. Partant du principe que l’enseignement supérieur se structure sous la forme d’un marché concurrentiel à l’heure de la mondialisation économique, la thèse montre, par le prisme des écoles d’ingénieurs et leurs étudiants au niveau Graduate, la redistribution multipolaire du marché de l’enseignement supérieur en fonction des offres internationales proposées en particulier par les puissances émergentes (BRICS) calquées sur le modèle anglo-saxon. La thèse montre ainsi comment ces étudiants constituent les nouveaux acteurs-ressources "nomades" détenteurs en partie du développement économique des nations par leur capacité d’innovation. Elle souligne dès lors l’imbrication sur un plan régional de ces différents acteurs associés à ce développement économique dans une démonstration empruntant tant aux travaux de la sociologie des organisations de Crozier et Friedberg que du nouvel institutionnalisme défendu par P. Hall et R.Taylor. Pour autant la thèse insiste sur la mainmise de l’étudiant en tant qu’individu dans ces choix de formations qui suivant une démarche rationnelle (Weber) va opter pour la formation la plus intéressante selon les critères qui lui seront propres. Cette thèse apporte un éclairage sur l’importance de ces étudiants par l’innovation technologique qu’ils confèrent à la nation américaine en offrant un avantage stratégique déterminant dans les rapports de forces internationaux. De la même façon, elle démontre l’irréversibilité pour le système de l’enseignement supérieur américain et ses écoles d’ingénieurs de renforcer son recrutement à l’international dans un contexte globalisé. / The thesis aims to highlight the means implemented by the higher education system in America to maintain a dominant position in terms of research and innovation. It reports on strategies for recruiting and training U.S. universities mainly internationally oriented in terms of excellence. Assuming that the higher education structure in the form of a competitive market at a time of economic globalization, the thesis shows, through the prism of engineering schools and their students at Graduate redistribution multipolar market of higher education according to international tenders offered in particular by emerging powers (BRICS) modeled on the Anglo-Saxon model. The thesis shows how well these students are new actors-resources "nomadic" keepers of the economic development of nations by their ability to innovate. It therefore underlines the nesting of a regional plan for the different actors involved in economic development in this demonstration as taking the work of the sociology of organizations Crozier and Friedberg that the new institutionalism defended by P. Hall and R.Taylor. For all thesis emphasizes the stranglehold of the individual student in the choice of training after which a rational (Weber) will opt for the more interesting training according to the criteria that will be clean. This thesis sheds light on the importance of these students through technological innovation they bring to the American nation offering a decisive strategic advantage in the international balance of power. Similarly, it demonstrates the irreversibility of the system of American higher education and engineering schools to strengthen its international recruitment in a globalized context.

Le changement par les technologies numériques en école d'ingénieurs : Étude d’impact / The changing by digital technology in engineering school : Impact Study

Résumé : Cette recherche analyse l'impact des technologies numériques sur l'efficacité de l'innovation des formations professionnelles d'ingénieur, des apprentissages et la flexibilité des dispositifs pédagogiques, ainsi que sur la professionnalisation des enseignants tuteurs universitaires. Ceci, au regard des modèles d'organisation managériale et d’usages pédagogiques des TIC. Les résultats de l’axe 1 indiquent que, les dispositifs de Master présentent un modèle d’organisation bi modale hybride qui impacte directement le déséquilibre de répartition des charges entre distance/présence. L’impact indirect sur les actions managériales favorise la flexibilité des dispositifs en termes de gestion des contraintes professionnelles/distance géographique et l’adaptation horaire, l’ouverture aux projets communs, le libre choix des méthodes et outils de communication collaborative médiatisée, accentués par l’émergence de changements de comportement, et une forte dynamique d’esprit d’équipe acceptant les différences constructives. En revanche, il suscite chez l’étudiant l’expression d’un mal-être se traduisant par la nécessité de souplesse structurelle, un besoin de télé laboratoire et plus de travaux pratiques professionnels en présence. L’axe 2 indique un impact direct sur l’usage pédagogique intensif du groupe d’outils incitatifs et interactifs (Emails, chat, forum, simulations, exerciseurs, conception/modèle graphe), et un usage médiocre du groupe (vidéo/visioconférence, audioconférence), l’absence d’usage du groupe (blog, wiki). En outre, il apparaît que le groupe d’outils (chat, forum, simulation, exerciseur) à usage intensif (presque à tous les UE), sont peu efficaces, contrairement aux outils (vidéo/visioconférence, téléconférence) à usage médiocre (rare à l’UE), qui sont plutôt assez efficace. La structuration des forums a un impact significatif sur l’efficacité d’apprentissage. Les forums de type 2 (assez structurés, 3 ≥ fn < 6), présentent une forte intensité de messages référentiels cognitifs et un comportement initia tif et réactif, assez prononcé. A L’inverse, les forums de type 1 (peu structurés, fn < 3), accentuent les messages (relationnels, de régulation) et l’attitude évaluative. Il apparaît dans les dispositifs hybrides, que la performance des étudiants ne dépend pas simplement de l’usage diversifié et intensif d’outils numériques, mais aussi des facteurs d’autodétermination, motivationnels, le sentiment de compétences et la valeur ajoutée des dispositifs. L’axe 3, présente un impact significatif des dispositifs sur le développement professionnel des enseignants/tuteurs, au niveau du changement des pratiques innovantes et de leur sentiment d’engagement. Il ressort que l’engagement dépend plus de l’intention personnelle d’explorer de nouvelles méthodes pédagogiques à distance par le numérique, et non pas aux prescriptions institutionnelles, ou actions managériales, perçues comme des injonctions institutionnelles.Mots-clés : Management et organisation, Technologies numériques, Innovation et formation d’ingénieurs, flexibilité et efficacité des stratégies, impact dispositifs hybrides ou FAD/e-Learning, actes de langage, pratiques pédagogiques innovantes, développement professionnel / This research analyzes the impact of the digital technologies on the efficiency of innovation of the vocational engineer’s trainings, and the flexibility of educational devices in distance learning, as well as on the professionalization of the teacher’s university guardians. This, with regard to the models of managerial organization and educational practices of ICTS(INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES).With the glance as of results from the axis 1, it arises that, the organization devices as regard mater degree, offer the model type bimodal hybrid with an imbalance in the burden-sharing with charges activities higher as distance involved than presence. The indirect impact of managerial actions favor the flexibility of devices in terms of managing professionals constraints as regard distance geographical and the hourly adaptation, the opening to the common projects, the free choice of methods and communications tools. It accentuated the emergency of the behavioral changes, and a strong dynamics of team spirit accepting the constructive differences. In addition, from de axis 2 of search, the intensive use of the inciting digital tools and interactive tool is not enough to explain their effectiveness or performance durably in supporting quality and evolution of the device’s training. It makes emerge the difficulty in organizing, illustrating and sharing the graphic figures or symbols, in order to explain reasoning during the exchanges with (chat, audio conference, and forum).The use of simulation devices is less effective, because of the digital divide (cost access and low speed Internet, infrastructures decayed to the point). Furthermore, the level of structuring of the forums has a significant impact on the effectiveness of training. Forums of the type 2 (structured enough, 3 ≥ fn ≤ 6), presents a high intensity of cognitive/métacognitive’s messages, an initiative and reactive behavior. It is the reverse with the forums type 1 (little structured, fn ≤ 2), where the evaluative attitude and messages that are not directly related to learning are increase than others. It also appears that the performance of the students does not depend simply on the intensive use of tool of the digital tools, but of their self-determination, resulting in their feeling of new competences, the sources of motivation and the added-value of the devices to develop itself in company. It arises from axis 3 that the devices significantly impact the professional development of the teachers/tutors, with the changes of practices digital and a strong personal intention to explore new teaching practices remotely, and not of a commitment related to the managerial or institutional regulations, perceived like injunctions.Keys words: Impact of digital technologies, hybrid devices or FAD/e-Learning, training of engineers of LMD system, flexibility and effectiveness’s pedagogic, acts of language and training quality, practices innovating, professional development of trainer. La gestion de l’information en contexte : Enquête sur les pratiques informationnelles des ingénieurs-chercheurs d’EDF-R&D / Information management in context : empirical study on research engineers' information practices

La question du contexte occupe une place centrale dans l’observation et l'étude de tout phénomène. Associée à la recherche d’information, la notion de contexte est de plus en plus mobilisée dans les domaines des sciences de l’information, de l’ingénierie des connaissances, des sciences cognitives et de l’informatique. En effet, le sens d'une expression linguistique, la lecture d’un document la stratégie mise en œuvre dans l’activité de recherche d’information, le raisonnement adopté dans l’opération de classement d’un document, le choix d’avoir recours à tel dispositif, varient fortement d'un contexte à l'autre. Mais que faut-il entendre exactement par contexte ? Comment le définir ? Le contexte est-il assimilable à la notion de situation ? À la notion d'usage ? Voici quelques-unes des questions qui sont traitées dans ce travail, qui cherche à appréhender l’environnement informationnel d’un groupe professionnel donné : les ingénieurs-chercheurs d’une équipe d’EDF-R&D. Pour ce faire, nous cherchons à cartographier cet environnement, à le comprendre, en interrogeant notamment la construction du sens en contexte. Notre contribution cherche ainsi à éclairer l’environnement informationnel de ce groupe d’acteurs et propose quelques axes de réflexion pour accompagner la construction d’une démarche instrumentée de gestion de l’information en entreprise. Ce travail associe différents acteurs (chercheurs et ingénieurs) et participe à un projet de recherche appliquée (ANR MIIPA-Doc). Il accompagne ainsi la conception d’une solution logicielle qui explore l’approche de la classification et de la navigation par facettes, et s’inscrit dans la mouvance des outils collaboratifs, dont le principe consiste à impliquer l’acteur dans les opérations de classification et de "marquage" des documents qu’il produit, manipule et classe dans le cadre de ses activités professionnelles. / Assuming that workplace significantly affects information seeking and information management patterns,this study explores accessibility and management of information sources among a group of research engineers.The study explores how these engineers, who belong to the R&D entity of a major energy group,require, search and manage information sources in given professional contexts. Furthermore, it strives toidentify the contextual factors that shape information practices. This empirical study is based on a qualitativeapproach: following exploratory inquiries, semi-structured interviews and observations were conducted witha small group of actors in their proper workplace. Our integration within the team facilitated the participantobservation stance. The study provides an analytic cartography of the various components of the organizationaland informational environments whereby the activities and tasks of the above mentioned actors takeplace. A wide range of practices has been identified via interviews but also through the activities and workrhythms observed. An appreciative framework has been developed to analyze the practices of access to informationproduced and used in professional contexts; it underlines the contextual factors that may becomedriving dimensions to support an innovative perspective on information management structures. The studyattempts to provide an innovative approach for the analysis of information practices in contexts, orientedtoward the design of a facetted and collaborative information management system.

It deals with dialoguing with the conceptions, diagnosis and proposals of the engineers for remodeling the city. It is highlighted that notions of civilizations, modernization and progress have become objectives to be achieved at any price in name of the conquest of an urban city . In the case of Sao Paulo, the foundation of the Polytechnic School in 1894 has strongly contributed for the city to receive a significant amount of professionals that have proposed themselves to the task to think about the urban problems and propose solutions for them. The foundation of Poly, as it became known, has meant to Sao Paulo the concrete possibility to have national professionals to present proposals for urban transformations. The first chapter of the essay gives an overall view of the Polytechnic School of Sao Paulo since its foundation, from the speech that involved its creation and its purpose and indicates engineers who have distinguished themselves by their action in the city by means of the exercise of public offices and the realization of their proposals. The Sao Paulo of the engineers is described through the proposition of urban interventions. It is discussed how the formation of engineers and their articulation with local powers was seen as strategic for the civilizing mission they were devoted to. The second chapter deals with the construction of the housings in Sao Paulo from what the engineers judged to be a model for hygienic housing, healthy and morally sound for the family and society. For such, they got involved in preparing norms, codes and regulations which, turned into law, with the pretension to propose a new concept of well living in Sao Paulo. The division of the city into perimeter zones supplements our comprehension about the different types of housing constructed in the same city, as well as the specifications by law that differentiated them according to the zone where the housing would be constructed. The third chapter departs from the observation of the city divided into zones and shows the discussions about the plans for Improvements to the City and which areas were target of major investment as opposed to others. Here the city is seen as stage of dispute for hegemonies of different social groups which used to conflict against each other. Out of the collision between different active social subjects the city is constructed, demolished and re-constructed again several times / Esta pesquisa trata da participação que os engenheiros formados na Escola Politécnica de São Paulo tiveram nas transformações urbanas pela qual a cidade de São Paulo passou nas primeiras décadas do século XX. Trata-se de dialogar com concepções, diagnósticos e propostas dos engenheiros para a remodelação da cidade. Destaca-se que noções de civilização, modernização e progresso tornaram-se objetivos a serem atingidos a qualquer preço em nome da conquista de uma cidade moderna . No caso de São Paulo a fundação da Escola Politécnica em 1894 contribuiu sobremaneira para que a cidade recebesse uma quantidade significativa de profissionais que se propuseram a tarefa de pensar os problemas urbanos e propor soluções para eles. A fundação da Poli, como ficou conhecida, significou para São Paulo a possibilidade concreta de ter profissionais nacionais para apresentar propostas de transformações urbanas. O primeiro capítulo da dissertação dá uma visão geral da Escola Politécnica de São Paulo desde a sua fundação, do discurso que envolveu sua criação e sua finalidade e ind ica engenheiros que se destacaram por sua atuação na cidade por meio do exercício de cargos públicos e da execução de suas propostas. Discute-se como a formação dos engenheiros e sua articulação com os poderes locais era vista como estratégia para a missão civilizadora de que estavam imbuídos. O segundo capítulo trata da construção das habitações em São Paulo a partir do que os engenheiros julgavam ser para a cidade o modelo de habitação higiênica, salubre e moralmente sadia para a família e a sociedade. Para tanto, trataram de elaborar normas, códigos e regulamentos que, tornados lei, com a pretensão de propor um novo conceito de bem morar em São Paulo. A divisão da cidade em zonas perimetrais complementa nossa compreensão acerca dos diferentes tipos de habitação construídas na mesma cidade, bem como das especificações em lei que se diferenciavam conforme a zona em que a habitação seria construída. O terceiro capítulo parte da observação da cidade dividida em zonas e mostra as discussões acerca dos planos de Melhoramentos da Capital e quais áreas eram alvo de maior investimento em detrimento de outras. Aqui a cidade é vista como palco de disputa por hegemonia de diferentes grupos sociais que conflitavam entre si. Este trabalho tem por fim construir uma história, fundamentalmente com base em fontes primárias, da formação dos engenheiros militares na primeira metade do século XVIII em Portugal e no Brasil, no que se refere principalmente aos conteúdos estudados, com destaque para a álgebra. O tema escolhido deriva do trabalho de iniciação científica que posteriormente teve continuidade na dissertação de mestrado intitulada: A Obra Lógica Racional, Geométrica e Analítica (1744) de Manoel de Azevedo Fortes (1660-1749): um estudo das possíveis contribuições para o desenvolvimento educacional luso-brasileiro, orientada pelo professor Sérgio Roberto Nobre e defendida em 2003, no Instituto de Geociências e Ciências Exatas, da UNESP, campus de Rio Claro. Para a presente investigação, foi fundamental a busca em arquivos, indícios e pormenores das fontes. Por isso, todo esse estudo tem como fundamento essa proximidade com as fontes, documentos manuscritos da administração pública da coroa portuguesa e textos caracterizados como notas de aula ou teóricos, ou seja, produção de alunos e professores, impressos ou manuscritos. O contato com as fontes permitiu contribuir para perspectivar o campo econômico, político e cultural do reino português, no tempo estabelecido, nomeadamente no reinado de D. João V. Nesse contexto, estudou-se a atividade profissional de engenheiro militar, as condições de acesso à profissão e o seu enquadramento institucional, as aspirações de ascensão social e as relações com os superiores hierárquicos. Pode-se entender melhor as circunstâncias da formação do engenheiro militar, estudando o quadro dos alunos que frequentaram a Academia Militar de Lisboa e dos professores dessa instituição. Assim, foi possível perspectivar como se teriam dado as Aulas de formação dos engenheiros militares nas capitanias brasileiras, identificando-se os professores e alunos da época. Por fim, apresentam-se alguns textos que serviram à formação dos engenheiros militares desse tempo, especialmente à formação matemática, procurando entender como foram produzidos, as circunstâncias dos seus usos e os conteúdos neles veiculados. / This paper studies the historical construction, based on primary sources, of military engineers background in the first half of XVIIIth century in Portugal and in Brazil, according to the studied contents, focusing on algebra. The chosen subject is based on a scientific work that became a dissertation named as: A Obra: Lógica, Racional, Geométrica e Analítica (1744) of Manoel Fortes de Azevedo (1660-1749): a study of possible contributions for the education development between Portugal and Brazil, advised by professor Sergio Roberto Nobre and presented in 2003, at the Geoscience and Exact Sciences Institut, of UNESP, in Rio Claro. The search in files and details of sources were essential for this research. Therefore, this study looked for those sources, manuscripts of the public administration from portuguese crown as well as notes of lesson or theoretical documents, which mean, the students and professors production, printed papers or manuscripts. The contact with the sources allowed predicting the economic, political and cultural fields from the portuguese kingdom, in that period, during D. João V reign. In this context, military engineer professional activity, conditions of access to the profession and their institutional adequation, social ascension aspiration and their relationship with hierarchic superiors were studied. It was possible to better understand the military engineer backgraund, studying the students and professors who made part of Lisbon Military Academy. So, it was possible to predict how they would have taught the Lessons for the military engineer background in the Brazilian captainships, in order to identify the professors as well as the students who attended the classes. Finally, some texts that were used to prepare the military engineers of that time are presented, mainly the mathematical background, looking for understanding how the circumstances of their uses and their contents were produced.

Os principais objetos de estudo dessa dissertação são uma estatística e um mapa da Província de São Paulo, ambos encomendados pela recém-instituída Assembleia Legislativa Provincial, em 1835, ao engenheiro-militar Daniel Pedro Müller (1785-1841). Planejados para serem utilizados como instrumentos de poder a serviço de grupos da elite paulista, no controle da administração provincial, a reconstituição dos contextos de sua produção, impressão e circulação permitem estabelecer nexos entre esses artefatos e a sociedade que os produziu e utilizou pela primeira vez, ampliando a compreensão da dinâmica política, econômica e social da Província paulista da primeira metade do Oitocentos. Para estudá-los buscou-se, inicialmente, reconstituir a trajetória de Daniel Pedro Müller, bem como caracterizar os grupos da elite paulista que passaram a ocupar os espaços de poder provincial a partir da transição do regime absolutista para a monarquia constitucional, no princípio da década de 1820, até o final da primeira metade daquele século. Em seguida, passou-se à análise dos artefatos propriamente ditos, buscando estabelecer relações entre esses objetos e os contextos político, econômico e social em que estavam inseridos. Por fim, a partir de dois exemplos concretos da economia política provincial a apropriação das terras indígenas para o avanço das culturas de exportação e subsistência em direção ao Oeste e a orientação da política econômica ao desenvolvimento da infraestrutura viária paulista buscou-se demonstrar como a construção territorial engendrada por estes artefatos serviu como instrumento de poder para a realização dos interesses e desígnios de autoridades administrativas em aliança com a elite mercantil-exportadora paulista. / The main study objects of this masters thesis are a statistic and a map of the Province of São Paulo, both commissioned in 1835 by the recently established Provincial Legislative Assembly to the military engineer Daniel Pedro Müller (1785-1841). Planned to be used as instruments of power to serve groups of the local elite in control of the provincial administration, the reconstitution of the contexts of its production, printing and circulation allows us to establish links between these artifacts and the society who produced and used them for the first time, expanding the comprehension of the political, economic and social dynamics of the Paulista province during the first half of the 19th century. In order to study these artifacts we sought, in the first place, to rebuild the trajectory of Daniel Pedro Müller as well as to characterize the Paulista elite groups that came to occupy the spaces of provincial power from the transition from the absolutist regime to the constitutional monarchy in the beginning of the 1820s, up to the end of the first half of that century. Afterwards we went to the analysis of the actual artifacts, aiming to establish relationships between these objects and the political, economic and social context in which they were entered. Finally, from two concrete examples of the provincial economic politics the appropriation of indigenous lands for the advancements of the exports and subsistence cultures towards the West part of the province and the guidance of the political economy for the development of the Paulista road infrastructure we aimed to demonstrate how the territorial construction engendered by these artifacts was used as an instrument of power to attend the interests and intends of administrative authorities in alliance with the São Paulo exporting-mercantile elite.

Les mathématiques dans la formation des ingénieurs et sur leur lieu de travail : études et propositions (cas de la France) / Mathematics in the training of engineers and in their workplace : study and proposals (case of France)

Dans cette thèse, nous poursuivons deux principaux objectifs : comparer l’utilisation des mathématiques par les ingénieurs sur leur lieu de travail avec la formation de mathématiques qu’ils reçoivent en France, et proposer un enseignement innovant qui pourrait permettre de rapprocher la formation des besoins révélés. Nous utilisons le cadre de la Théorie Anthropologique du Didactique et nous commençons par définir la notion de « praxéologie mathématique » pour analyser l’activité mathématique des ingénieurs dans les institutions qu’ils sont amenés à fréquenter. Nous classons en deux catégories les six types de praxéologies relevées sur le lieu de travail : praxéologies « propres » (bases, statistiques, spécifiques) et « transversales » (modélisation, raisonnement, communication). Dans la formation initiale en France, il semble que les bases et le raisonnement soient prises en charge essentiellement par le cycle préparatoire. En cycle ingénieur, les statistiques et les enseignements spécifiques sont le plus souvent proposés, mais la formation semble manquer d’applications et de connexions avec la réalité du quotidien des ingénieurs. Face à ces constats, nous proposons la mise en place, en cycle ingénieur, d’un Parcours d’Étude et de Recherche codisciplinaire en statistiques et chimie. Nous observons que la question génératrice permet aux étudiants d’avancer sur un chemin balisé tout en leur permettant de développer des échanges ainsi que leur autonomie. Ce dispositif semble placer les futurs ingénieurs dans des situations où les mathématiques jouent un rôle de premier plan, offrant une bonne approche des praxéologies professionnelles. / In this thesis, we pursue two main objectives: compare the use of mathematics by engineers in their workplace with the mathematics training they receive in France, and propose innovative teaching that could bring training closer together to the needs revealed.We use the framework of the Anthropological Theory of Didactics and we begin by defining the notion of "mathematical praxeology" to analyse the mathematical activity of engineers in the institutions they attend. We classify in two categories the six types of praxeologies identified in the workplace: "proper" praxeologies (basics, statistics, specific) and "transversal" (modelling, reasoning, communication).In initial training in France, it seems that the bases and the reasoning are mainly taught in the preparatory cycle. In the engineering cycle, statistics and specific courses are most often offered, but the training seems to lack of applications and connections with the everyday reality of engineers.Faced with these observations, we propose the establishment, in the engineering cycle, of a Study and Research Path in statistics and chemistry. We observe that the generative question allows students to advance on a signed route while allowing them to develop exchanges along with their autonomy. This device seems to place future engineers in situations where mathematics play a leading role, offering a good approach to professional praxeologies.

Vehicle dynamic validation and analysis from suspension forces

Several standardized courses for Formula SAE (FSAE) testing are introduced and described with sufficient detail to be reproduced by any Formula SAE team. Basic analysis methods for the courses are given as well as explanations of how those analyses could be used. On-car data from the Global Formula Racing (GFR) SAE cars is used to verify the analysis methods, give estimates to unknown variables, and show the relevance of the standard testing courses. Using the courses and methods described in this paper should allow standardized comparison of FSAE car performance, as well as provide a method to verify simulations and evaluate changes in vehicle performance from tuning. Instrumentation of all suspension member forces with strain gauge load cells is shown to be an extremely powerful tool for measuring vehicle performance and quantifying vehicle dynamic characteristics. The design and implementation of strain gauge load cells is described in detail to provide a template for reproducing similar results in other vehicles. Data from the GFR 2011 FSAE car is used throughout the paper to: show the design process for making effective suspension member load cells, show the calibration processes necessary to ensure quality data is collected, illustrate the calculation of suspension corner forces, and show the effectiveness of measuring vehicle dynamic characteristics with this technique. Using the methods described in this paper should provide data that allows a more complete and thorough understanding of on-car vehicle dynamics.
