An Action Research of Using Multiple Intelligences Theory in the Junior High School English ClassChen, Jen-Jun 17 July 2004 (has links)
This report describes an action research project that was designed to determine the effect of using the multiple intelligences theory in the junior high school English class. Through a review of the multiple intelligences theory combined with analysis of its relation with English teaching, the researcher tried to design MI-based English teaching activities, construct the MI-based English instruction program and furthermore bring it into practice.
The subjects consisted of thirty-three second-grade students selected from the researcher¡¦s junior high school in Kaohsiung. The MI-based English instruction program included twelve learning units in daily lessons and three cooperative learning projects. At the research period of twenty-three weeks, the data were collected through teacher observation records, students¡¦ learning reflections, teaching journals, MI-based worksheets, interviews, Multiple Intelligences Strategy Appraisal for English Learning, and English Learning Experience Questionnaire.
The accumulations and analysis of the research results indicated a satisfaction of students¡¦ diversity and a significant improvement in several aspects including students¡¦ learning motivations, learning for understanding, memorizing learning materials, using English learning strategies, creating authentic learning environment, an improvement in English abilities, and understanding different cultures. The MI-based English instruction showed a positive learning atmosphere so students accepted the MI-based teaching model, and then hoped the researcher to keep the teaching model in the future. However, the research result also indicated that students learned the diverse English learning strategies, but they were unable to use the strategies very well. Besides, a few students with negative attitudes toward MI-based teaching hoped to be taught individually.
The multiple intelligences theory is close to teachers¡¦ teaching experience that students learn in diverse ways. It provides a useful framework for teachers to organize all kinds of teaching methods. Moreover, the multiple intelligences theory is not just an idea. It is practicable for teachers to carry it out in daily lessons to solve the problems about students¡¦ diversity.

Investigating Chinese Upper Secondary School Students’ Motivation for Learning English from the Aspects of Genders, Age, and MajorsLu Larsson, Wei January 2021 (has links)
English language learning is an indispensable part of Chinese students’ education. As a core subject tested in the high-stakes national college entrance examination, English plays a decisive role in Chinese upper secondary students’ schooling. According to the Canadian social psychologist, Robert Gardner, when learning another language as a formal school course, motivation is a critical determinant of successful learning outcomes. Studies on motivation to learn English in China give precedence to tertiary education; empirical studies of secondary education are underrepresented. Drawing on a comparative perspective, this study investigated Chinese upper secondary students’ motivation to learn English from the aspects of genders, age, and majors. A questionnaire survey was undertaken to assemble data from 120 participants in an upper secondary school in Chengdu city. The results indicated that, the participants at large were positively motivated to learn English, and their motivation was preponderantly instrumentally oriented (e.g., educational qualification, occupational prospect, etc.). A statistically significant difference in motivation between the female and male participants was identified, namely that the females demonstrated a stronger motivation and were willing to expend more effort and perseverance to learn English. Neither age nor major was found to make any significant difference to motivation. The pedagogical implications suggested in this study, sheds light on tackling the issues of developing a long-term strategy for promoting sustainable motivation, as well as underpinning the English language pedagogy in Chinese upper secondary education.

Understanding the Choice of Chinese Graduate Students' English Learning Strategies in a Canadian Context2015 January 1900 (has links)
This study, entitled “Understanding the Choice of Chinese Graduate Students’ English Learning Strategies in a Canadian Context,” explores the English learning strategies employed by six graduate students from China after their arrival in Canada, and documents and analyses changes in their learning strategies. These Chinese students encountered a change of language context because when in the unilingual Chinese environment they spoke Mandarin and upon their arrival in Canada, they were obligated to use English to communicate with Canadians and other international students. These students employed different English learning strategies in the Canadian context from what they were accustomed to in China. Thus, the researcher’s central objective in this study is to discover and document those changes in learning strategies and to investigate the factors accounting for the changes. In the process, the researcher aims to fill a gap in research exploring the learning strategies of Chinese students in foreign contexts, and create valuable new knowledge to benefit prospective Chinese international students, policy makers at the international universities, and English educators in China.
The theoretical framework of this research is the qualitative co-constructivism paradigm along with narrative inquiry. Semi-structured interviews were used as the primary method of collecting data in this study, beginning with individual interviews, and followed by a focus group interview. The data collected through the interviews showed that the six participants’ reliance on the memory and cognitive strategies employed in China were abandoned in favor of utilization of compensation strategies and social strategies after moving to Canada. Furthermore, these participants were more open to making mistakes and taking risks during interactions with others in English. Moreover, these participants made these changes mainly because they desired to use the English-speaking environment in Canada to improve English proficiency. An important finding of my research is that their immersion in the English-speaking environment inspired these participants to employ different English learning strategies that led to significant improvement in their English proficiency.

Using mobile apps to facilitate English learning for college students in ChinaLiu, Qiaochu, He, Xuan January 2015 (has links)
With the popularization of mobile technology and the explosion of apps, Chinese college students can use mobile apps to improve their English ability. While there is considerable enthusiasm for using apps to support learning with their multimedia capabilities, portability, connectivity, and flexibility, there is a paucity of research evidence about whether such approach can facilitate English learning for college students and what students’ attitudes are towards the new approach. Besides, there is a lack of research about which apps are good and suitable for them in specific aspects of English studies, such as spoken English, reading comprehension, listening or writing. In order to figure out them, the semi-interview survey and experiment are used in our study. The interviewees were 5 college students studying at USST or SDTU, China. They talked about their attitudes towards using apps to study on their own. In the experiment, the subjects were 15 exchange students, now studying at the University of Borås. The experiment examined the effect that college students use mobile devices to learn English by themselves. The finding suggests that the new learning approach is effective and helpful for college students to improve English by using their mobile devices, as well as undergraduates are willing to use apps to learn English with self-regulated learning approach instead of traditional learning approach. Some apps well suited for college students are presented. Based on the findings, we provide useful instructional strategies for college students to learn English by themselves in the end.
