Deciphering Holland's Code

The Party Exercise found on countless career guidance websites and popularized by the best-selling, job-hunting book What Color Is Your Parachute (Bolles, 2015) purports to provide an estimate of an individual's Holland's code. This study examines whether this commonly used Party Exercise accurately predicts an individual's Holland's code (Holland, 1997). Undergraduate students (N=473) completed The Party Exercise and then the Self- Directed Search (Holland & Messer, 2013). The results of this study do not support the use of this popular “Party Exercise” as a valid estimate of an individual's Holland code.

[pt] O segmento das participações privadas vem funcionando com sucesso nos países desenvolvidos. Graças à maturidade alcançada por esta modalidade de investimento nestes mercados, esses empreendimentos passaram a ter relevância também nos países em desenvolvimento. No Brasil, entretanto, o segmento de participações privadas não se desenvolveu como esperado. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi o de conhecer as principais razões do não desenvolvimento das participações privadas no mercado nacional. Pesquisas bibliográficas e de campo, apontaram cinco principiais fatores que dificultaram o desenvolvimento deste tipo de investimento no país nos últimos 15 anos. Foram eles: (a) a dificuldade que o investidor encontra para sair de investimentos, principalmente devido a um mercado de capitais pequeno, poucos compradores estratégicos e dificuldade para abertura de capital; (b) a elevada taxa de juros, que aumenta o custo de oportunidade e restringe o fomento de capital para o setor produtivo; (c) a instabilidade política e a econômica, que colocam em dúvida o destino do país e afastam investimentos de longo prazo e alto risco; (d) a ineficiência do poder judiciário, inapta para avaliar rapidamente disputas e a falta de instrumentos alternativos para fazer avaliações e tomar decisões; (e) a informalidade da cadeia produtiva, que cria ambientes onde os concorrentes não pagam impostos gerando desvantagens competitivas. Apesar destes problemas a perspectiva para investimentos das participações privadas no país é boa, porém, condicionada à manutenção da estabilidade econômica, crescimento econômico, alternativas para saída de investimentos, modernização do poder judiciário e melhoria da legislação vigente. / [en] There has been a global growth in the private equity segment over the last fifteen year. The current levels of global liquidity have facilitated the capital flows and emerging countries have been among the beneficiaries. Brazil, has been slow to develop in the private equity segment. Therefore, the objective of this study is to uncover the main factors that have arrested the development of this sector of the capital market in the country in the past 15 years. Research on specialized bibliography and interviews allowed us to pinpoint the five main factors: (a) difficulties to exit investments, due to a small market, shortage of strategic buyers and difficulties in creating an open capital market; (b) high interest rates, which increase costs and reduce applications in production; (c) economical and political instability, which generates uncertainty and scares investors; (d) inefficiency and slowness of the judicial system, unable to efficiently settle disputes and, the lack of alternative instruments, such as arbitration chambers, to evaluate and resolve disputes; (e) the informality of the production chain, that creates an environment of unfair competition which, in turn, dampens productivity and economic growth. Despite all these problems, the professionals believe that there could be room in the Brazilian market for the development of the private equity segment. However, before this can happen, conditions such as, stability of the economy and economic growth, better alternatives to exit businesses, modernization of the judiciary and improvement of the legislation have to be attained.

First, there is the introduction of the matter, running over the problem which needs inspection and the purposes to be reached. Then, a theoretical basis is showed through the document, about the evolution of social corporative responsibility and of the Ethos guides of social responsibility. The empirical research done at Usiminas and Arcelor Companies, two great representatives of the Brazilian steel segment, tried to identify and describe the social responsibility guides which were addopted by the companies as to evaluate the benefits and the results provided by the social management to the organizational performance. The methodology applied at the work identifies the multicase study and the qualitative approach. The bibliographical and documental research was used as the source, as well as the check-list, in order to get information by the companies. The results of the research made possible to check the group of action, politics and values of the organizations, the benefits got by the companies and the recognition of the importance in practicing social responsible action to all the stakeholders, as well as the necessity of putting them about and to keep improving such action. Finally, there are the conclusions about the work and the advices about future studies and researches. / Este trabalho tem como tema de estudo a responsabilidade social empresarial, e mais especificamente, a utiliza??o dos indicadores desta pr?tica, como forma de avaliar a gest?o social das empresas. Inicialmente, faz-se a introdu??o ao assunto, discorrendo sobre o problema a ser investigado e os objetivos a serem alcan?ados. E, ao longo do documento apresenta-se uma base te?rica, sobre a evolu??o da responsabilidade social corporativa e dos indicadores Ethos de responsabilidade social. A pesquisa emp?rica, realizada junto ?s empresas Usiminas e Arcelor, duas grandes representantes do setor sider?rgico brasileiro, objetivou identificar e descrever os indicadores de responsabilidade social adotados pelas empresas e avaliar os benef?cios e resultados que a gest?o social proporciona ao desempenho organizacional. A metodologia utilizada identifica o estudo multicaso e a abordagem qualitativa. Como fonte de coleta de dados fez-se uso de pesquisa documental e bibliogr?fica, al?m do check-list, para levantamento das informa??es junto ?s empresas. Os resultados da pesquisa permitiram verificar o conjunto de a??es, pol?ticas e valores das organiza??es, os benef?cios gerados para as empresas, o reconhecimento da import?ncia de se praticar a??es de responsabilidade social a todos os seus stakeholders, bem como, a necessidade de torn?-las p?blicas e de continuar investindo e aprimorando tais a??es. Campus Barreiros. To guide the development work, we used the qualitative and quantitative approaches, the qualitative was important in times of discussions, seminars and bibliographic surveys, but also provided a flexible relationship between teacher and student, while the quantitative was used in the preparation spreadsheets, charts, tables and systematization of data feed intake, feed conversion and weight gain. The research was carried out during the class period of the group of husbandry 1 in agricultural technical course in the discipline poultry cut and the practice experiment was accomplished in a period of 42 (forty two) days. We adopted an interactive approach in order to develop in students an awareness of innovative and make them able to use the science produced within the production process and the parameters of competitiveness. At the beginning of the study, was applied the initial questionnaire to diagnose the knowledge about the subject, the project proceeded with discussion and demonstration of the importance of different types of food that are part of the diets and the development of the broiler. In the second moment, was a questionnaire of final diagnosis to verify the construction of knowledge through the proposed methodology, where realized that research was instrumental in developing cognitive. This paper based on the research as a method of teaching aroused the curiosity of the student in the teaching /learning through practices carried out as a choice of local area boundaries, distribution of chicks. In addition to the questionnaires, we used the following elements: seminars, lectures and practices, technical visits, videos, library, internet and laboratories, which contributed to the formation of knowledge learned. In general, this research aimed to improve the quality of our students of professional Education Agricultural they contribute a large part in the development of family farming in our country, our state and region. This integration of teaching and research contributed to the teaching/learning process through the operationalization of curriculum connect in an integrated way, providing opportunities for students to practice the acquired knowledge to find a better opportunity to work and develop entrepreneurial activities. / Este trabalho ? resultado de uma pesquisa realizada com alunos da disciplina de Avicultura Corte, teve como objetivo analisar o processo de ensino/aprendizagem, permeado pela pesquisa atrav?s de experimentos pr?ticos desenvolvidos no laborat?rio de pequenos animais do Instituto Federal de Educa??o, Ci?ncia e Tecnologia - Campus Barreiros ? PE. Para orientar o desenvolvimento do trabalho utilizou-se as abordagens qualitativa e quantitativa, a qualitativa foi importante nos momentos de discuss?es, de levantamentos bibliogr?ficos e semin?rios, como tamb?m proporcionou um relacionamento flex?vel entre o professor pesquisador e alunos, enquanto que a quantitativa foi utilizada na elabora??o de planilhas, gr?ficos, tabelas e sistematiza??o de dados do consumo de ra??o, convers?o alimentar e ganho de peso. Redefining “Enterprising Selves”:Exploring the “Negotiation” of South Asian Immigrant Women Working as Home-based Enclave Entrepreneurs

This study examines the experiences of highly educated South Asian immigrant women working as home-based entrepreneurs within ethnic enclaves in Toronto, Canada. The importance of their work and experiences need to be understood in the context of two processes. On the one hand, there is the neoliberal hegemonic discourse of “enterprising self” that encourages individuals to become “productive”, self-responsible, citizen-subjects, without depending on state help or welfare to succeed in the labour market. On the other hand, there is the racialized and gendered labour market that systematically devalues the previous education and skills of non-white immigrants and pushes them towards jobs that are low-paid, temporary and precarious in nature. In the light of the above situations, I argue that in the process of setting up their home-based businesses, South Asian immigrant women in my study negotiate the barriers they experience in two ways. First, despite being inducted into different (re)training and (re)learning that aim to improve their deficiencies, they continue to believe in their abilities and resourcefulness, thereby challenging the “remedial” processes that try to locate lack in their abilities. Second, by negotiating gender ideologies within their families and drawing on community ties within enclaves they keep at check the individuating and achievement oriented ideology of neoliberalism. They, therefore, demonstrate how the values of an “enterprising self” can be based on collaboration and relationship rather than competition, profit or material success. The concept of “negotiation”, as employed in this thesis, denotes a form of agency different from the commonly perceived notions of agency as formal, large-scale, macro organization or resistance. Rather, the concept is based on how women resort to multiple, various and situational practices of conformity and contestation that often can blend into each other.

This study describes an experience about the Young Enterprising Program in the Public Schools in Alagoas. It uses the education at a distance with High School students in the Public Schools. The methodology of the qualitative research has a perpective of a study of case. It focues the question of the contribuition of the program to the digital inclusion in the state school in Alagoas, and also it is to insert the concluded young students of High School in the labor market. The research includes the Education at a Distance and how to use the Entrepreneurship in the Education. The student s depositions, instructors and the coordination of the program are some instruments in the collect of data, during the investigation. This investigation has aimed for to anlyze the contribuition of Young Enterprising Program, through of the Education at a Distance, to the qualification and introduction of the concluded young students of the High School in the labor market. The Education at Distance in the High School and the entrepreneurship in the Education are broached in the development of the study. / Este estudo descreve a experiência do Programa Jovem Empreendedor da Escola Pública (JEP) em Alagoas, que utiliza a Educação a Distância, via Internet, com alunos do Ensino Médio nas Escolas Públicas Estaduais. A pesquisa focaliza a questão sobre o modo como o JEP tem contribuído para a inserção dos alunos concluintes do Ensino Médio das escolas estaduais alagoanas no mercado de trabalho. A metodologia utilizada foi a pesquisa qualitativa, na perspectiva do estudo de caso, envolvendo a pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, além da observação participante e não-participante em duas escolas da rede pública estadual, que constituem o universo da pesquisa. Os depoimentos dos alunos, instrutores e coordenação do programa, juntamente com as entrevistas e os questionários aplicados, foram os instrumentos utilizados na coleta de dados durante a investigação, que teve como objetivos analisar as contribuições do JEP, através da EAD, para a qualificação e a inserção dos alunos concluintes do Ensino Médio no mercado de trabalho; bem como investigar as potencialidades da EAD no Ensino Médio e as possibilidades fornecidas pelo JEP para a diminuição da exclusão digital. A Educação a Distância no Ensino Médio e o Empreendedorismo na educação são abordados no desenvolvimento do trabalho.

[pt] Esta dissertação propõe a utilização do modelo sistêmico como visão compartilhada, de forma a judar uma empresa iniciante de base tecnológica a evoluir na direção de sua profissionalização, preparando-se para receber o capital de risco. Para tanto, realizamos inicialmente um estudo teórico sobre a abordagem sistêmica dos fenômenos sociais e chegamos às seguintes propostas particularizadas para o caso de empresas em questão: (a) modelo geral envolvendo os construtos estrutura, cultura, personalidade, desempenho e aprendizagem; (b) modelo de intervenção sistêmica de mudança; (c) modelo sistêmico de estrutura; (d) método de mapeamento da personalidade individual de membros da organização; (e) método de avaliação das meta-competências; e (f) método de avaliação do nível de aprendizagem. Além disso, foi feito um estudo de caso da nTime Mobile Solutions, premiada e jovem empresa brasileira do mercado de Internet-Móvel, chegando aos seguintes resultados: (a) enquadramento segundo a tradicional tipologia evolutiva de KOBERG, ROSSE e BERGH (1994); (b) análise segundo os arquétipos de cultura organizacional de HANDY (1978), DEAL (1982), DONNELY (1984), SETHIA (1985), DESHPANDÉ (1993), ZAMMUTO (1991), HANNAN (2001) e SAXBY (2002); e (c) identificação de vantagens e desafios da abordagem sistêmica no processo de amadurecimento de um empreendimento tecnológico. / [en] This essay proposes the usage of systemic model as shared vision in order to help a technology-based startup to evolve towards to become a professional company ready to receive venture capital. To achieve that goal, we firstly conducted a study about systems theory applied to social pr]henomena and obtained the following results: (a) general model comprising the concepts structure, culture, personality, performance and learning; (b) intervention systemic model for change; (c) systemic model for structure; (d) mapping method for individual personality; (e) method for evaluating meta-competences; and (f) method for evaluating the organizational learning level. Moreover, we also conducted a case study of nTime Mobile Solutions, awarded and young brazilian company of Mobile-Internet industry. obtaining the following results: (a) analysis according to traditional evolution typology of KOBERG, ROSSE and BERGH (1994); (b) analysis of organizational culture in accordance with archetypes of HANDY (1978), DEAL (1982), DONNELY (1984), SETHIA (1985), DESHPANDÉ (1993), ZAMMUTO (1991), HANNAN (2001) and SAXBY (2002); and (c) identification of advantages and challenges of systemic approach on the evolutional process of a technological startup.

In this perspective, the thesis entitled "The Cultural Corridor: space materialization of social exclusion in Mossor?-RN" is a moment of apprehension and analysis of the local reality from the urban policy implementation that emphasized an enterprising model, which has, as the concrete space to urban renovation manifestation, the cultural complex called cultural corridor. [pt] A economia mundial tem sofrido intensas mudanças nas últimas décadas. As pequenas e médias empresas ganham destaque na economia e revelam consigo a importância do mercado de capital de risco, que ajuda no desenvolvimento dessas empresas com auxílio financeiro e de conhecimento. Nas fases ainda mais iniciais destacam-se os investidores anjos, pessoas físicas com elevado capital social e financeiro que atuam de forma societária nessas empresas. Este trabalho descreve o advento da Economia Empreendedora, melhor adaptada às mudanças acima, e entra no universo do investidor anjo. Com base numa ampla revisão bibliográfica são descritos o investidor, seu ambiente e sua forma de atuação. Em seguida, pela aplicação de um questionário baseado no conhecimento obtido com a literatura, diversas barreiras nessa identificadas foram submetidas a uma pesquisa que constatou algumas semelhanças com os mercados internacionais e também peculiaridades do mercado brasileiro. Avaliou-se ainda o comportamento dos anjos frente a 17 variáveis políticas e econômicas. Esta parte da pesquisa é útil em especial para a avaliação das atuais políticas de incentivo a esta atividade e ao planejamento de outras. / [en] The World´s economy has changed a lot in the last decades. In the first stages the angel investors, providers of social and financial capital for these companies, are more relevant. This work describes the origin of the Entrepreneurial Economy and enters into these investors universe. Based on an extensive bibliographic research it describes the angel investor, its environment and investment process. Latter, with research among Brazilian investors, the barriers fo und on the literature were submitted for their opinions. Many differences and similarities were found between Brazilian and the other markets. There were also evaluated the impact of 17 economic end political conditions, which are considerably important for the evaluation of actual and future political incentives to stimulate entrepreneurship.
