It is a change that follows a global trend that spreads an inclusive education policy and that has had a profound impact on Brazil, with import results in field researches. This subject has been highlighted due to the significant amount of disabled students enrolled in college institutions (IES), although it is still modest the number of studies about it, especially in what matters the assistance given to the candidates to a university entrance examination. The aim of this paper is to investigate how effectively Natal s IES apply the rules established in Brazilian law concerning disabled students, especially MEC/GM Circular Warning n. 277/96, in what respects the conditions given to disabled students preparing to enter a college. The investigation followed a qualitative methodological approach with support on an exploratory study. The data recollection employed questionnaire, semi-structured interview and documental analyses, and the data have been organized and assessed following Minayo s (1996) stages. What concerns the results, it was observed that none of the ten colleges inquired confirmed to possess places exclusively to disabled candidates; six of them, however, offer Special Examining Board in the selection process of disabled candidates. Among eighteen college bills, only two of them offered specific information related to services and resources offered by IES to the candidates who ask for especial assistance concerning examination. During the interviews, four managers avowed the preoccupation in offering an equal selection process, but two of them proved not dominate the subject. In conclusion, the investigated institutions managers do not still seem to respect the rule that guarantees to disabled candidates equal conditions during all the process of the university entrance examination. With this work, we hope do help changing this focus and contribute to new studies on disabled persons studying for a degree / O n?mero de pessoas com defici?ncia que tem ingressado no Ensino Superior, no Brasil, aumentou significativamente no in?cio do s?culo XXI.

The development of a science competency test for technikon students

Davids, Samiega January 2003 (has links)
In the mid-1980’s institutions of higher learning were coerced by the South African government to admit students from all races. As a result, these institutions were confronted with the need to identify preparedness for higher learning, especially amongst the ex-Department of Education and Training (DET) learners. Grade 12 results were not a sufficient predictor for ex-DET learners, and a review of current admission criteria became a necessity. This study aims to develop a suitable science entry-level test to be used as a component of an existing test battery. The test battery is used as an admission tool by the Port Elizabeth Technikon to further assess first year applicants who do not meet the normal entrance requirements for a science course. The only requirement for further assessment being Grade 12 physical science. The science entry-level test consists of a list of validated science skills and knowledge to be used to assess the skills and knowledge mastered at the time of test taking. On the basis of test scores, an assessment is made regarding the applicant’s preparedness for higher learning. This study holds the view that preparedness in students for higher learning in science can be measured by means of valid science competencies. In addition, knowledge of the level of preparedness of the applicant enables further educational support and guidance to be provided where necessary. Research which measures manifest academic ability rather than potential to learn is favoured since it is believed that the former generates psychometric evidence of that which was already mastered academically whilst the latter determines whether the student will be able to achieve under ideal conditions. The content covered by the proposed Science Competency Test was sanctioned by technikon lecturers of first year physics and chemistry courses. The content was taken from the examinable section of the Grade 11 and 12 physical science syllabi. This content is the most acceptable and fair knowledge-base a prospective science student can be expected to have mastered at school. The content was limited to those skills and knowledge believed by the lecturers to contribute to academic success in the first year. Items that tested this content were compiled and pilot tests were administered to Grade 12 physical science learners at various disadvantaged schools. The Science Competency Test was compiled from the pool of trial items after the performance of the items was statistically determined. This final Science Competency Test was completed by a sample of 179 first-time first year science students. The findings of the study were inconclusive as the Science Competency Test showed a moderate predictive ability for only one section of the sample. It further showed that the weighted matric score, WMS was not a significant predictor of future academic performance of the sample either. A discrepancy in performance amongst learners of different home languages and educational backgrounds was also noted.

Nel, Annette., Nel, Annette 05 September 2012 (has links)
M. A. / The inequalities regarding opportunities for the various cultural groups in South Africa to obtain access to tertiary education, could largely be attributed to the insufficient schooling that was available to black scholars until now. A new political dispensation and the coupled drastic changes to the educational system, including tertiary institutions, demands that the admission policies regulating the access tot tertiary education be reviewed and changed to provide for the educationally disadvantaged student. The Rand Afrikaans University created an alternative admission policy to accommodate educationally disadvantaged students and or students who do not qualify in terms of the usual admission criteria. Apart from certain minimum requirements, the policy requires that the learning and developmental potential of the prospective students be established. Language proficiency, intelligence, learning potential and other non-cognitive components are elements of the alternative evaluation. RAU found that the admission policy creates the necessity to research the predictive validity of the cognitive part of the test battery, with regard to the criterium academic performance. This research project attempted to assess whether the psychometric test battery which the University uses, within the framework of an academic support programme called Project 100, can be viewed as valid in predicting future academic performance of these students. The battery includes the measurement of intelligence by means of the LSAT; learning potential as assessed by the APIL; as well as language proficiency that is measured by using the Leesbegripstoets and the Reading Comprehension Test. M-score was also included into the statistical procedures, as to see whether the predictive validity of this factor is really as low as it is generally assumed. The statistical procedures that were employed to establish the predictive validity, included correlation coefficients for determining the validity of the individual components. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to determine the predictive validity of the components of the battery in conjunction with each other. Using the technique of discriminant analysis, the success of grouping through the test battery was assessed - looking at the proportion of the cases correctly classified into the categories pass, fail, and no admission to exam; and the categories successful and unsuccessful. The individual correlation coefficients revealed that each component correlated significantly with academic performance. M-score also correlated with academic performance, but this coefficient was the lowest of all the factors. The component which correlated highest with academic performance, was language proficiency. The GSAT and the APIL correlated to the same extent with performance, and the relationship between the two instruments was also relatively high. This implies that these two instruments probably measures the same construct. The results from the regression analysis proved M-score, APIL and the GSAT in combination to explain more of the variance in academic performance than any of these factors individually. M-score seems to explain other aspects of performance than intelligence and learning potential, and should for this reason be reckoned with when assessing a prospective student's potential success. The discriminant analysis showed that the tests successfully distinguish between the categories successful and unsuccessful, but not between the three categories pass, fail and no admission to exam. The factors should however never be seen in isolation. No single factor can predict academic performance to the full. The person should be seen as a whole, and the influence of non-cognitive factors should always be kept in mind.

The Swedish sustainable energy market:Opportunities and barriers for new actors. : Barriers and obstacles to Swedish solar market

Al-Mimar, Samer January 2016 (has links)
Sweden is moving from the fossil-atomic age, making ready for photovoltaics (PV) to assume a noteworthy part in a future formed by renewable power production. Sweden is a global leader in renewable energy, environment technology, and Clean-tech. The country fully embraces green technologies and this area has a major business potential. The goal is to reach a 50 percent share of renewable energy by 2020. Photovoltaic (PV) system is one of the main sources of renewable energy sources, the rate of installed PV increased in Sweden. During 2014 36.2 MWp installed, which is almost double installed power 19.1 MWp during 2013. During 2013 and 2014 1.1 MWp sold to the electrical grid and 9.5 MWp of the off-grid system been sold. It was and will be always a problem to start a business or to enter a new market or technology, struggle to understand the market, solve the problems, and increase the sales to achieve the success. Since many companies face difficulties, selling products and getting more projects, for that a research document made to investigate more and find solutions. The purpose of this research to identify solar market entrance obstacles and barriers, and how can new entrants makes solar market entrance. Investigate the statues que of today market and the predict future for solar market in Sweden. No. of bitstreams: 1 Cristiano Alexandre dos Santos.pdf: 830393 bytes, checksum: a3fadf8659ed0c14ff808ee27c386ba8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2004-09-22 / The present work has as theme the professional identity of the college entrance exam preparatory course teacher. Its main goal is to distinguish this teacher who teaches classes in a informal type of school and also has brought great benefits to those seeking to attend higher education. The theme s social relevance lies in the fact that, even though acting in an informal teaching setting, this teacher is someone who interacts with hundreds of high school graduate students who seek, in these prep courses, for help to be successful in the college entrance exams conducted by Higher Education Institutions. The understanding of how the prep course teacher identity n built on, using the relationships with students, school management and peers as reference, becomes the problem of this investigation which has demanded the establishment of the following goals: to study the teacher s scope and limitations as an education professional; to understand the development of the Brazilian high school system in its relation to higher education and the current context of entering this level of education and to know the prep course teacher s features. To study the identity, the research used the contributions of Berger and Luckmann (1978), Hall (1982), Mendonça (1994), Silva (2000) and Woodward (2000). To investigate the education professional s identity, the most important references were the researches of Enguita (1991), Nóvoa (1991), Carrolo (1997), Brzezinski (2002), Gómez (2000) and Tardif (2002). In order to reconstitute the history of the high school system s objectives and the entering mechanisms method to higher education, it was used mainly the studies of Chagas (1984), Strehl and Fantin (1994), Cury (2002), Kuenzer (2002) and Abramovai e Castro (2003). The dialectical materialism method was adopted in the course of this investigation. From the object approach standpoint, the present research is qualitative. A bibliographical research was conducted and a case study wad developed. The categories in which this work was based on were: identity and education professional s identity. As data collecting procedures, this work has prepared and used prestructured interviews with students, teachers and also with the principal of Garra Prep School, chosen as sample. Through the theoretical references and group interviews, it is possible to conclude that this Prep School is one of the several spaces in which professional identities are built. The students and teacher s movement searching for adequate training and, therefore, professionalization. The prep school teacher has been facing a proletarianization process which is evidenced by the mechanism of this functions; however, he has his own identity and he is an education professional.

Post-occupancy evaluation of the Linn-Benton Housing Authority lobby and reception office

Binder, Susan K. 23 April 2004 (has links)
The research evaluated the remodeled lobby and reception office of the Linn- Benton Housing Authority, Albany, Oregon. Programming goals identified five needs: protect client privacy, provide for orderly queuing at the reception counter, decrease contact time between clients and staff, and improve reception office for attention focused tasks and for space intensive tasks. These five goals formed the basis of a post-occupancy evaluation (POE) of the lobby and reception office. Concepts from cognitive theory and culture and methods from ethnography and environment-behavior research were used to study public visitors and staff in these areas. Data were analyzed according to cognitive cultural categories then compared to criteria specified for building performance. The performance was measured and evaluated for concordance between the criteria and performance. Ethnographic methods provided insights into the knowledge, beliefs, and values of the users of the study area. This information served as a measure of building performance reflecting cultural meanings attributed to the study area; it provided information about how visitors and staff used these meanings to mediate their experiences within the building. Data was compared to data from the programming study and from an earlier series of exit interviews with public users after the remodeling was completed. Information from the programming phase was used to develop the criteria for building performance. Exit interviews were based on open-ended questions about activities, impressions, and feelings about the housing authority lobby. This contributed to the measures of performance. Data collected for this research was based on ethnographic interviews, semi-structured interviews, ethnographic observations, and behavior maps. These four methods allowed triangulation of data to ensure adequate and reliable coverage of the complexity and variety of behaviors and activities within the study area. This information provided the major data for evaluating building performance. The evaluations of the five programming goals indicated generally positive results for privacy, queuing, contact with staff, and space intensive tasks. There was a negative evaluation for attention focused tasks. Cultural meanings attributed to the remodel design include an improved sense of self-worth, sense of confidence and trust identified as professionalism, improved staff security, and improved valuation of privacy. / Graduation date: 2004 / p.58 missing from both paper copies.

Pereira, Thiago Ingrassia January 2007 (has links)
Reaching graduation is still a distant reality to many people in our country.
