Entrepreneurship competence of economic management science teachers in the Kenneth Kaunda District / Pistorius Z.Pistorius, Zelma January 2011 (has links)
The disproportionately high unemployment figures for the youth highlight the importance of finding alternative ways of increasing youth participation in the economy. According to the Western Cape Youth Report there are four major factors that have been identified as having a significant influence on the entrepreneurial environment in South Africa, especially as this relates to the youth, namely education and training; social and cultural norms; access to finance and the regulatory environment. Recent data compilations show that many poor and non–poor people in many developing countries face a high degree of financial exclusion and high barrier in access to finance. Although access to finance is a perennial problem for all small businesses, the youth are particularly vulnerable to this limitation. Many extremely poor households operate their own businesses, but do so without ample means.
A particularly pernicious problem is that the school system is not producing functionally literate students. For many years financial literacy has been neglected. There was also general agreement that people should be equipped with social skills, but financial literacy was not necessarily included as one of these skills. Many school–leavers do not have sufficient literacy, numeracy and livelihood skills to be able to participate actively in the economy. Pilot initiatives revealed that students often enter university with little knowledge of how to work out a weekly budget or manage money. Many of them in receipt of bursaries and other financial support soon run out of money and lead a hand–to–mouth existence.
A comprehensive and well co–ordinated approach to youth entrepreneurship is needed to increase the chances of success for start–ups as well as the chances of existing businesses to progressing from “micro” to fully–fledged small and medium–sized entities.
The main objective was to research the entrepreneurship competencies, skills and knowledge of the EMS teacher who will be instrumental in promoting entrepreneurship under the youth of the country. To meet the research objectives a qualitative approach was selected and a questionnaire was used as the survey instrument. A new questionnaire was developed to assess respondents’ perceptions of the importance of entrepreneurial knowledge, skills and training in teaching EMS. The responses received were analysed and assessed and the findings are embodied in the recommendations and proposals of this dissertation.
This study is of interest to policy makers, educational institutions and schools as well as to the Department of Education. The results of the study are intended to encourage the Department of Education to make a serious effort to promote entrepreneurship competence, knowledge and skills of primary school teachers. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Understanding Entrepreneurial Leadership that supports local entrepreneurshipCalatrava Castagnetti, Ruperto Andrés, Coti Zelati, Alberto January 2018 (has links)
Leadership and entrepreneurship have often been associated to the ability of guiding ventures, but less to the ability of leading a startup community. This master’s thesis examines literature on entrepreneurship, in particular Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (EE), to understand the role of leadership in sustaining a startup community. Although Stam’s (2015) EE framework recognizes that leadership enables entrepreneurship, it doesn’t define its characteristics and therefore, a more theoretical understanding is demanded. We have thus developed a conceptual framework that aims to facilitate empirical explorations and future analyses of the leadership dimension of Stam’s (2015) EE framework. Our conceptual framework of Entrepreneurial Leadership (EL) includes the following characteristics: collective and bottom-up approach, presence of formal and informal leaders, promotion of social proximity and mentorship driven leadership. The use of interviews as research method and our EL conceptual framework as analytical tool was useful to explore and understand the current state of EL in the startup communities of Amsterdam and Utrecht. On the one hand, the startup community of Amsterdam experiences a shared leadership where formal and informal leaders are recognized. Moreover, the strong presence of supporting organizations, networks of mentors and entrepreneurial events favour interaction among the stakeholders of the EE. On the other hand, Utrecht, a smaller and younger startup community, lacks success entrepreneurial stories that results in supporting organizations exercising the leadership role. Furthermore, there is a poor presence of entrepreneurial events and networks of entrepreneurs that lead to an unconnected community.

An analysis of intelligent failure within corporate entrepreneurshipCasely, William Robert January 2016 (has links)
Intelligent failure occurs when an entrepreneurial initiative falls short of its anticipated performance. It provides valuable new knowledge to the organisation and is recognised as an important factor in long-term corporate entrepreneurial success. This thesis is located within the domain of corporate entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial failure, and explores the various processes of intelligent failure. The specific aim of this thesis is to learn how organisations manage intelligent failure. Research takes an inductive approach with the predominant use of a qualitative methodology and, as part of a multiple case study strategy, research is carried out in six organisations operating in differing sectors within the UK. Findings indicate that the organisations often fail to manage intelligent failure. There is little evidence of a strategic approach to learning from failure and, where learning occurs, it is predominantly unstructured. This is significant because literature consistently argues that a structured process is required to manage learning from failure successfully. This research recognises that structured processes may be more effective than unstructured processes when looked at in isolation. However, this thesis argues that unstructured mechanisms do have inherent value. Therefore, when organisations develop failure management processes, a dual path may be considered, which might extract value from both systems as is contextually appropriate. This may enable organisations to maximise their ability to learn from failure. This thesis adds to existing management theory in the corporate entrepreneurship domain. In specifically focusing on the structured and unstructured forms within the process of intelligent failure, this thesis addresses a gap in current literature. It also adds to existing literature that centres on the practical management of the learning from failure process.

How does social media affect entrepreneurial leadership : A qualitative study on entrepreneur’s perceptions regarding social media as a tool for entrepreneurial leadershipGratell, Philip, Dahlin, Carl Johan January 2018 (has links)
This thesis is about entrepreneurial leadership and how entrepreneurs are affected by social media. Our aim with this study is to investigate how social media affects entrepreneurial leadership. One of the main questions we are trying to figure out is, can social media be used as a tool for entrepreneurial leadership and if that is the case, how? To be able to answer the aim, the thesis takes a qualitative researched approach, we conducted individual face-to-face semi-structured interviews with entrepreneurs. The data from the interviews will be analysed using grounded theory coding with the approach of finding 1st order concepts to look for patterns in the data. The 1st order concepts led us to the 2nd ordered themes, which became three aggregated dimensions; cast expander, leadership enhancer and new social context. The result gave us a deeper understanding of entrepreneurial leadership and how the entrepreneurial leader perceives social media as a leadership tool. By combining our three aggregate dimensions, cast expander, leadership enhancer and new social context we were able to build a model of how these three dimensions intersect. What makes this model useful is that it gives us some insight into how social media affects entrepreneurial leadership

Entrepreneurship has emerged in recent decades as an issue of vital importance to society, given its close relationship to innovation and economic development. In this context, the Information Technology industry, highlighting the software industry, features a centralized and critical role in regards to globalization, shortening distances, maximizing use of time and collectivize knowledge among people. Thus, this study aims to understand which is the relationship between Entrepreneurial Attitude, Entrepreneurial Behavior and trajectory of innovations in the two central models of software companies. For this, a survey was conducted with 16 companies divided into two stages: the first quantitative and exploratory and the second qualitative via in-depth interview with four managers selected among participants of the first phase. The main results showed that despite having different values for Entrepreneurial Attitude and Entrepreneurial Behavior, the companies analyzed showed histories and profiles similar differing primarily with regard to the reasons for the creation of the business. However, with regard to business models, it was found that the definition of those are influenced by the attitude and behavior of the entrepreneur, and this relationship drives the innovations developed by companies along the axis that goes from incremental innovation to radical innovation. It was also found that the analyzed companies have gone through a time of transition about to the business model, given the increasing external pressures. The reaction to these pressures is possibly associated with the degree of education, knowledge management, the lifetime of the company and especially with the manager of the Entrepreneurial Attitude. Finally, it emphasizes that the influence of institutions of support to entrepreneurs, such as SEBRAE, have a positive effect about to the structuring of the industry in its early years, however in times of turbulence where the restructuring of business is required such institutions were presented as negative influences on business.

The influence of entrepreneurial education activity on the entrepreneurial characteristics of undergraduate students of the Federal University of Santa Maria - UFSM.Balconi, Silvana Bortoluzzi 01 June 2016 (has links)
This study aimed to analyzed the influence of entrepreneurial education activities on the entrepreneurial characteristics of undergraduate students at the Federal University of Santa Maria, Campus PM. Was conducted a qualitative and quantitative exploratory case study, based on empirical research. Informal data collection was gathered with the objective to identify which teachers, in the opinion of the students, perform different activities in the classroom. For the qualitative research, a semi-structured interview was performed with five teachers. For data analysis, was adopted the method of content analysis. From this analysis emerged methods of teaching activities, teacher-student interaction and entrepreneurial learning. For the quantitative research was applied a questionnaire developed by David McClelland (1971) which was answered by 792 undergraduate students. The internal consistency of the scales was evaluated by Cronbach s alpha coefficient, taking into account the reliability for the measurement and evaluation of the constructs. Data were analyzed using statistical tests. Regarding the results of the questionnaires, it can be stated that the intensity of entrepreneurial characteristics less present in students are taking calculated risks, persuasion and contact networks. The association of the two approaches was performed by the triangulation technique. As a result, it was found that, from the less present entrepreneurial characteristics in students, it requires reflection, in order to provide adherent practical activities to the peculiarities and the concept of these characteristics, for the moment that enhances practices aimed to develop entrepreneurial characteristics in the classroom, it is providing the student with a different way of learning. The statement that students recognize the teacher who practices different approaches in the classroom, shows that the practices that increase entrepreneurial characteristics and attitudes of students are a fact and a necessity for the learning process.

Previous issue date: 2014-06-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The main objective in this study is to analyze the links between the learning process and the competence development of entrepreneur women. We tried to understand the role of context in the professional carrer of the entrepreneur women; to characterize the learning process; and to identify the entrepreneurial competences of BWSP winners. The theoretical base comprises four sections, in order to (a) present the different theoretical perspectives on the phenomenon of entrepreneurship; (b) to characterize entrepreneurial learning based on the construtivist-sociological approach and, therefore, experiential, including the RAE model (2004) and POLITIS (2005); (c) to address the entrepreneurial competence in a dynamic view, ie, as a result of professional action, taking into consideration the context and social experiences; and (d) to describe the links between learning and entrepreneurial competence from the learning process and the elements of the context which act as mediators on the development of competences. To facilitate the achievement of objectives, we used the method of oral history. The research was conducted with five BWSP winners, between the years of 2004 and 2012, in the small business category in the state of Paraiba. Data collection was made using a semi-structured interview which was transcribed and analyzed using narration analysis. Results show there are links between the learning process and the development of entrepreneurial competence by means of the context and its variables, which include economic and social conditions; family relationships; gender; and stereotypes. These variables affect the trajectory of entrepreneurs working lives. Besides, entrepreneurs highlighted that the process of entrepreneurial learning occurs in daily routine, through direct experiences, work practices, success and failure, and it is built from experiences. About entrepreneurial competence, entrepreneurs find it very important knowing how to identify business opportunities; knowing the activities and related business processes; moving resources in unforeseen situations; besides turning experiences into learning and willing to learn. Competence comes from some knowledge which is produced by experience and mediated by some context. The findings reveal that the development of entrepreneurial competence involves a continuous process of learning, while that learning reflects the competences, creating a virtuous circle. The learning process therefore underpins the development of competence. The survey results highlighted that the practices or experiences, social and family interactions, as well as self-development and contact with other people contribute to entrepreneurial identity and thus promote the links between learning and entrepreneurial competence / Este estudo tem como objetivo central analisar os vínculos entre o processo de aprendizagem e o desenvolvimento de competência de mulheres-empreendedoras.
